Course description: This course will examine the challenges and trends facing families and marriages. The course will explore the changing nature of family patterns in the United States as well as in other countries. Areas of study include gender, singlehood, mate selection, traditional and nontraditional families, family violence and other crisis issues and divorce and remarriage patterns.

2 GRADING SCHEME three exams: 100 points each 300 Final exam discussion posts 2 points ea 40 participation/attendance-- Did you check in weekly? 25 Grades are determined by the accumulation of a possible 400 points based on completion of all course requirements. 3 FORMAT OF EXAMS: The format of the first 3 exams will be 50 multiple choice questions, worth 2 points each for a total possible point accumulation of 100 points. The final exam is an essay paper, worth 25 points, is to be turned in through the D2L drop box. EXTRA READING MATERIALS will be posted online. INCLUDED ON THE TESTS. This material WILL BE DISCUSSION POSTS In addition, students will make 25 posts to our discussion board. I will post 2 or more weekly topics; students have 10 days in which to post their comments. Your posts should be informative and more than just an I agree type of post. It is fine to write the I agree post, it just won t receive full credit. I like to write I agree posts myself! As always, we should be courteous to one another online. WEEKLY PRACTICE QUIZZES Students should take an online, ungraded practice quiz provided every week. Some of the quiz questions will be included on the major exams. POWER POINTS Students are able to access the text book s power points summarizing the main points of each chapter.

4 M&F FINAL EXAM ESSAY; DUE Dec.7, Dec HOWEVER, A ROUGH DRAFT IS DUE MONDAY, NOV. 24TH. LET ME KNOW THE TERMS YOU ARE CHOOSING TO ILLUSTRATE. The final exam will consist of a five-page typed paper applying what you have learned in the course to your life experiences. Choose 1 term from any 10 of the text chapters studied during the course and illustrate each term through examples from your life. For example, the term homogamy could be illustrated by describing what you and your partner have in common or do not have in common). military families, interracial families, gender roles, are examples. Each term should be described in a paragraph of about a half page. An example of how to write this paper has been included on the content page. Another possibility would be to focus on one concept more in depth. You could reflect upon your experiences with divorce, mate selection, lessons learned through the marriage relationship or any of the many concepts studied throughout the course. The paper will be no less than 5 pages typed, double-spaced and 12-point type size. It is to be turned in through the D2L drop box. GRADING RUBRIC: Paper is written clearly, with few, if any 5 points grammar or spelling mistakes Terms or concepts are correctly and accurately 5 points illustrated Paper refers to the text in a meaningful manner 5 points Examples selected are thoughtful, interesting and 5 points original 5 points Did you turn in a timely rough draft? 25 points total

5 Students (you) must take responsibility for participating in the discussion board in a timely fashion. Once the discussion question is locked, it won t be reopened. You re either on time and get the points, or you re not. But don t sweat it too much; missing a few DQ won t seriously impact your grade. Read a chapter a week from the Knox text. Take and retake the practice tests provided for each test. They don t count for a grade, but the exams are for the most part taken from these practice tests. Participate in the discussion board Read outside readings as assigned. Test questions will be drawn from these readings as well. Have fun with the course! 8 LEARNING OBJECTIVES Identify the various issues concerning interpersonal choices. Discuss the implications that traditional gender role socialization has for the relationships of women and men. Document the delay in getting married in the American adult population and analyze why this is happening; discuss the social movements that have contributed to singlehood. Differentiate between romantic and realistic love. Identify individual motivations for marriage and explain the societal functions of marriage. Differentiate between the terms heterosexuality, homosexuality, bisexuality and transgendered. Define the term sexual values and identify three alternative sexual values and note the various associations with these values in terms of the person s gender, religious involvement and nature of the relationship (involved or casual) associated with each one. Discuss social influences motivating individuals to have children. Discuss the individual motivations for having children and how undergraduate men and women differ in their attitudes toward having children. Identify and discuss seven aspects of the role of being a parent. Explain and give an example of how the absence of a parental decision is a decision. Define battered-woman syndrome and uxoricide. Give examples of emotional abuse and a profile of the emotionally abused victim. Define personal stress and crisis events. Describe key factors in resilient families. Identify various macro and micro factors which help to explain why we have such a high divorce rate in the U.S. Identify twenty-five characteristics associated with people who divorce.
