We are seeking an experienced Audio Visual Technician with effect from 1 September Reporting to a number of senior colleagues, including the Estates Manager, you will play a central rôle in supporting having responsibility is supporting Whole School events. Key responsibilities will include: Supporting the Drama/Theatre Studies department; Supporting the Media Studies department; Supporting the Music department. You will be educated to at least A Level (or equivalent) with experience of using audio-visual equipment, knowledge of theatre scenery, safe rigging and staging equipment. In addition, knowledge of electrical principals and electrical safety is essential. A genuine commitment to supporting the achievement of students through your work in this stimulating environment is also required. 3 JOB DESCRIPTION for AUDIO/VISUAL TECHNICIAN February 2016 This document sets out the requirements and responsibilities for the Audio Visual Technician position at JFS and supersedes any previous job descriptions for this position. PURPOSE OF POST The position has been set up to act as a service agent supporting four areas of school activity. The prime responsibility is to support Whole School events followed equally by Drama, Media Studies and Music. 4 The Audio/Visual Technician is responsible for the running and general maintenance of the audio and visual equipment used in public spaces. This is of prime importance as one of the key roles will be to instil the confidence in the school staff to freely use the equipment and available resources. 1. Maintaining and Managing Equipment 1.1. Regular check of lecterns, projectors, ICT, amplification and related equipment in all public spaces: Theatre Conference Centre Main Hall Boardroom 1.2. To liaise fortnightly with the School s Facilities Management team over faulty equipment and necessary repairs To keep stakeholders fully informed of relevant issues relating to their event/department Manage all audio and visual equipment in the School (including but not limited to leads, amplifiers and microphones) and ensure the stock is maintained and operational Maintain a full audit of existing equipment Be proactive in seeking the repair of equipment - liaising with the Facilities Management team and line managers Make recommendation for new or additional equipment where needed 1.8. To prepare and set-up equipment in preparation for lessons, assemblies concerts, informal use, special events or productions. 2. Events Attend and support with whole school events which will include but are not limited to: 2.1. Formal Events Prospective Parents Evening (Year 7) Prospective Parents Evening (Sixth Form) Introductory evening for Year 12 parents HE Parents Evening Graduation Ceremony New Year 7 Introductory Parents Evening Other events as agreed with the School 2.2. Informal Events JiEP events (for example Yom Ha atzmaut) End of term staff meetings Special Events/Assemblies Other events as agreed with the School 2.3. Teaching and Learning Events Setting up equipment for special events, Conferences and workshops. Reading Festival Music Festival 2.4. Filming of discrete Lessons/Activities and Editing. This will include:

General curriculum support related to the AV role. 3. IPTV 3.1. To understand all aspects of the IPTV software and how it functions 3.2. To be aware of upgrades to the software and liaise with the member of SLT with oversight of ICT about the instillation of any such upgrades 3.3. To be willing to train other colleagues in the school, as required, in the operation of the IPTV software 3.4. To oversee the technical functioning of the IPTV software and to provide regular reports, to the member of SLT with oversight of ICT, concerning the system and the effectiveness of its operation (how it is being used, problems in the system, proposed solutions, the amount of material stored on the system and any other developments) 3.5. To be responsible for encoding pre-existing analogue and digital material and adding this to the system 3.6. To provide technical support for the encoding of material recorded live and the storage of such material on the system 3.7. To be prepared to make technical changes, to improve the functioning of the system, following discussion with the member of SLT with oversight of ICT 4. AV Technician Diary 4.1. Maintain a shared AV Technician Diary on Outlook which should be: Proactive all future dates/bookings etc should be inputted Reactive this should reflect work completed on a day-by-day basis. 5. Other 5.1. The normal working week will be from Monday to Friday starting at 08:30am until 16:30pm As the work largely involves direct contact with students and teachers, this is a term time post only The table in Appendix 1 lists the events when the AV Technician is expected to attend outside of normal school hours and is reflected in the salary for this post PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT REMAINS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF TGM. HOWEVER, THE AV TECHNICIAN IS EXPECTED TO ALSO BE PART OF THE JFS SYSTEMS FOR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT, INCLUDING THE SETTING OF PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES The School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff to share this commitment. B Drama/Theatre Studies Department Summary The technician is to be available for technical support and training during some practical lessons and rehearsals of exam pieces and to assist with various needs relating to the School s annual productions. 6. Maintaining and Managing Equipment 6.1. To facilitate the use of the department s equipment, Studio, Theatre and other spaces to their full potential Maintain, operate and assist in the operation of: Lighting Sound Video and projection equipment 6.3. Manage all audio and visual equipment in the department (including but not limited to leads, amplifiers and microphones) and ensure the stock is maintained and operational Maintain a full audit of existing equipment Be proactive in seeking the repair of equipment - liaising with the Facilities Management team and line managers Make recommendation for new or additional equipment where needed 6.7. To oversee equipment for performances, assemblies, formal and informal use To prepare and set-up equipment in preparation for lessons, special events or productions. 7. Training 7.1. Support students who choose sound and lighting as part of their AS/A2 exam Provide training and support for teachers in the use of sound and lighting as required. This may be provided directly or through an external person Support and work with students who volunteer as in the JFS Tech Club and more widely. 8. Curriculum 8.1. AS/A2 Spring/Summer Term Support sound, lighting and filming requirements for AS and A2 productions This will involve one Sunday and 3 x 1.5-hour after school rehearsals for each for Year 12 and Year 13.

7 Transfer DVDs to CRL/Fronter 8.2. GCSE Spring Term 8.3. KS Support sound, lighting and filming requirements for GCSE productions This will involve two Sundays and 3 x 1.5-hour after school rehearsals for Year Transfer DVDs to CRL/Fronter Support sound, lighting and filming requirements for any extended schools or curriculum work Time to be determined Transfer DVDs to CRL/Fronter 9. Productions 9.1. To ensure that the audio/visual needs for productions and events are fully met, with functioning and properly set up and set down equipment for sound, lighting and video Exam Productions weekly rehearsals + two Sundays prior to productions (as detailed in 8.1 and 8.2) To assist Tech crew with sound To assist Tech crew with lighting To assist Tech crew with audio and visual recording To copy videos/dvd of production To assist with set up and set down 9.3. Productions 3 after school rehearsals, 3 Sundays prior to productions and 3 performances To assist Tech crew with sound To assist Tech crew with lighting To assist Tech crew with audio and visual recording To copy videos/dvd of production To assist with set up and set down C Media Studies Summary The requirements of Media Studies are similar to both Drama and Music, with similar weight being placed on the need for facilities management and training. Although really crucial is the establishment of a comprehensive equipment database and system for logging kit in and out when students take it off the studio floor. This same concern applies to the management of the edit suites. Also the training of both teachers and pupils would allow the full potential of the facilities to be realised. With Media Studies maintaining the equipment store, studio and the gallery are important aspects. 10. Maintaining and Managing Equipment To facilitate the use of the department s equipment and Studio to their full potential Maintain, operate and assist in the operation of: Cameras and accessories Tripods Lighting equipment location and studio

8 Sound equipment Edit Suites Gallery Charge Batteries Tidy studio and stock cupboard Provide support for: Lunch time/after school filming/editing in the studio (support students as and when requested) Lessons in the studio - including but not limited to introducing the equipment and editing Writing suitable guides and rules for using the equipment Liaise with security so that students may collect and return equipment Manage all audio and visual equipment in the department (including but not limited to leads, amplifiers and microphones) and ensure the stock is maintained and operational Maintain a full audit of existing equipment Be proactive in seeking the repair of equipment - liaising with the Facilities Management team and line managers Make recommendation for new or additional equipment where needed To oversee equipment for formal and informal use To prepare and set-up equipment in preparation for lessons and special events To write a basic safety and practice guide for the equipment To monitor all edit suites both in a scheduling sense and to make sure that when projects are wrapped they are removed from the hard drives allowing the suites to function at full speed. 11. Training Provide training as needed for students and staff on: Cameras Lighting and sound equipment in the studio Edit suites Location facilities (guidance for when using the facilities out of school) 12. Curriculum AS and A Offer technical advice to all students when working on their projects in the studio Create landing pages for the blogs and authorise student accounts. D Music Department Summary In the recording studio, keyboard suite and classrooms music software (currently Sibelius and Cubase) is integral to the department s curriculum. Support and advice is needed in the maintenance and set-up of this specialised software. This takes the form of setting up the various systems, training both staff and pupils and limited curriculum support.

9 Additionally, support is required in meeting the audio and visual needs for concerts, productions, extra-curricular events and exam work, 13. Maintaining and Managing Equipment To facilitate the use of the department s equipment, Keyboard Laboratory, Recording Studio, Theatre and other spaces to their full potential Maintain, operate and assist in the operation of: Keyboard Laboratory (headphones, sound cards, headphone ports, computers) Laptops - including advice on the best set up for and use of music software Recording studio Classroom Keyboards Manage all audio and visual equipment in the department (including but not limited to leads, amplifiers and microphones) and ensure the stock is maintained and operational Maintain a full audit of existing equipment through fortnightly checks Be proactive in seeking the repair of equipment - liaising with the Facilities Management team and line managers Make recommendation for new or additional equipment where needed To oversee equipment for performances, assemblies, formal and informal use To prepare and set-up equipment in preparation for lessons, concerts, special events or productions. 14. Training Provide training as needed for students and staff on: Cubase Music Software Recording Studio Audio and Visual Resources in the theatre 15. Curriculum Support AS & A2: April / May 10 hours (lesson and non-lesson time) Recording of work e.g. Recital Evening, Composition Recordings, Audio exports Working with SL to compile CDs for the exam board Copying of audio CDs as required GCSE: March/April 20 hours (lesson and non-lesson time) Recording of work - e.g. Recital Evening, Composition Recordings, Audio exports Working with SL to compile CDs for the exam board Copying of audio CDs as required KS3: c15 hours set up time + termly review (c3 hours) To support the department in the use of audio/visual needs with KS3, particularly in the use of Cubase Copying of audio CDs as required.
