These lectures will be programmed on during our IP. 1

2 GOALS: This Intensive Programme (IP) is entitled DIVersity and sustainability in Education is accessible for teacher trainees from the last year (3rd or 4th year) of their first cycle (Bachelor degree) in education. The thematic area of the IP is Teacher training and education science. This IP DIVUS is set up for teacher trainees and their trainers in order to: 1. learn about the diversity in personal, interpersonal and intercultural behaviour in order to be able raise his/her awareness of different cultures and manners of thinking and reasoning; 2. understand the broad concept of sustainable development as a principle of creating a viable society and the responsibility of each individual therein; 3. gain knowledge of social and political concepts and structures to get familiar with European educational policy; 4. appreciate the importance of the creative expression of ideas, experiences and emotions in a range of media (cultural awareness and expression); 5. realise that communication in foreign languages mediates intercultural understanding; 6. gets familiar with methodologies to teach content areas from a European/international perspective. In all the group activities during the course, students work in multicultural groups. One teacher trainer is assigned to each group, in order to assure that the learning outcomes are being achieved. The activities chosen are lecturing and workshops, as well as observing and practising. All IP activities will be organised within a powerful learning environment that is characterized by a good balance between discovery learning and personal exploration on the one hand, and systematic instruction and guidance on the other, always taken into account the individual differences in abilities, needs, and motivation between students. Students will visit representative European schools in Brussels in order to experience practically what has been discussed in theory. They will also participate in excursions (e.g. Alden-Biesen, European Parliament). A website about the IP DIVUS will be elaborated, including the best practices brought along by the teacher trainers as well as the e-books produced by the teacher trainees. 2

3 PREPARATION: 1. All participating students will elaborate a powerpoint presentation per country as a preparatory task. The goal of the presentation is to get insight into the participants countries situations towards diversity and sustainability in education. 2. Students must prepare the materials needed for the presentation before coming to Belgium, including information in written form available for all participating students. Please note that this contribution counts towards the award of credits! EVALUATION: Students who completed all assessments successfully are awarded 3 ECTScredits. All participating institutions have agreed to guarantee academic recognition of these credits as part of their regular curriculum. The students will get transcript of records, which specifies the ECTS and grade obtained (ECTS grading). The certificate is signed by the co-ordinator and the representatives of the partner institutions. Since all IP partners have adopted ECTS and most have them have signed interinstitutional agreements with the co-ordinating institution, the credits obtained through this IP will be a valid part of their study programme at their home institution.
