2 The Diversity Task Force would like to invite human service professionals across the commonwealth to our Spring 2012 Diversity Task Force Training Events. Our theme for the training event is Embedding Diversity into Family Engagement Strategies. We invite you to join us and hope that these training events provide you with an opportunity to learn, re-energize, build on your existing strengths, and share your concerns and ideas with others. There are no registration fees associated with any of these training events; however, all costs incurred by participants for overnight accommodations, travel, meals, and mileage are the sole responsibility of the individual or agency. All of the workshops will be eligible for continuing education Credits. 4 Presenter: Annette M. Cremo, PhD., is the President of Performance Plus Training, Consulting and Coaching, LLC. Performance Plus is a human resource consultancy firm, who works with organizations to maximize human potential through curriculum planning and design, individual and team coaching and organizational and individual assessments. For the last 18 years, she has worked with individuals and organizations to help them reach their full potential through research, design, curriculum development, training and program evaluation. Her work has focused on leadership, strategic planning, communication, negotiation, diversity, civility in the workplace and life coaching. Dr. Cremo graduated Magna Cum Laude from the Pennsylvania State University with a Bachelor of Science degree majoring in Behavioral Science with a minor in Health Planning and Administration (HPA) and Gerontology. After completing her degree, she earned an advanced certificate in gerontology. She then earned a Master s Degree in Education with a major in Training and Development from the Pennsylvania State University. Her Doctorate, from Temple University, was in Psychoeducational Process with an emphasis on Adult Education and Organizational Development. Dr. Cremo did her doctoral research examining individual and team impact on high performance work systems and transfer of learning using a variety of curriculum delivery methods. Summary of Workshop: Effective communication is the very lifeblood of any organization or relationship. If communication is not clear and persuasive between employees and clients then other vital goals are forever out of reach. The best way to begin is to build a better understanding of personal communication styles and their effects on other people. This workshop will focus on the influence of personal communication styles on building and maintaining relationships in a culturally-sensitive manner. During the workshop, participants will have the opportunity to assess their own personal communication style and apply it to interpersonal relationships with others. This workshop will address how child welfare professionals can engage families and work with others in a multi-cultural environment. Learning Objectives: Participants will have the opportunity to: Apply knowledge gained regarding communication styles and personal style to improved family engagement Identify a preference for one of four communication styles Define diversity as it applies to your work Review the do s and don ts of diversity Apply understanding of generational differences Uncover the characteristics of each style (communication and personal) Discover how style affects communication Learn how to speed read a person s style Understand how to flex personal style for effective communication with others

8 MISSION The mission of the Diversity Task Force is to create, support, and facilitate the understanding and valuing of human diversity for individuals and organizations affiliated with the Pennsylvania Child Welfare Training Program. The Task Force will provide leadership, direction, and accountability towards the goal of awareness and commitment to cultural competence through communication, advocacy and education. VISION We are a team of diverse, committed individuals that provide leadership to the Training Program in areas of service related to the issues of human diversity.

9 The Pennsylvania Child Welfare Training Program is a collaborative effort of the University of Pittsburgh, School of Social Work, the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare, and the Pennsylvania Children and Youth Administrators. It was established to train direct service workers, supervisors, administrators, and foster parents in providing social services to abused and neglected children and their families. The Training Program is centrally managed and regionally administered by the University of Pittsburgh, School of Social Work. The Pennsylvania Child Welfare Training Program is made possible through grant funds from the Department of Public Welfare to the University of Pittsburgh. The Pennsylvania Child Welfare Training Program is a national leader in advocating for an enhanced quality of life for Pennsylvania s children, youth, and families.
