5 GRANT FUNDING (The New York Public Library, New York, NY) The below listed grants include my work as a Principal Investigator (PI), having primary responsibility for the project design, execution and management of the research and programmatic projects, and in the case of the Wallace Foundation, Learning in Libraries, as Project Director, having the primary responsibility for the design, execution and management of the staff training and public service programs. Learning in Libraries Initiative Focus: Managed staff development project to enhance staff capacity to serve youth. Funder: Wallace Foundation, Period: 2004 to 2006 Amount: $2 million Grants funded by: New York State Library through the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) program administered by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). NOVEL (New York Online Virtual Electronic Library) Grant Focus: Provided staff training development to enhance the staff's ability to offer public training sessions, highlighting the NOVEL databases, as well as other electronic resources. Promotional materials such as English and Spanish language postcards/print materials and free giveaways were designed and featured on the NYPL web site, where NOVEL and other electronic resources can be accessed. Period: September 1, 2004 to May 31, 2005 Amount: $35,000 Leadership Academy Projects Focus: Two Leadership Academy projects were developed to help staff develop their management and leadership abilities. Supervising librarians were trained through experiences that included an executive management series, a regular schedule of topical programs, a panel discussion on best practices, and the creation of a plan of action to address an actual management issue. Through this project, staff were prepared to become future leaders at the Library and elsewhere and learned to manage services, programs, and staff more effectively to meet the changing needs of library users. Periods: April 1, 2005 to March 31, 2006, and April 1, 2006 to March 31, 2007 (2 grants) Amounts: Year 1 Budget $59,590 and Year 2 budget $57,570 Making it REAL!: Recruitment, Education And Learning (REAL) Focus: A programmatic model of Teaching Libraries and scholarships to recruit and educate professional librarians, cultivating a diverse new workforce that is well prepared to serve community needs, especially those of diverse groups and special populations. 10 VOLUNTEER TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT EXPERIENCES AIDS Vaccine Ride, Fairbanks to Anchorage, AK Member, security road crew, Summer 2001 Bike ride to raise financial support and awareness for HIV and AIDS vaccine agendas. Over 1,400 riders and 200 crewmembers. Provided logistical support, including parking and medical team guidance over the five-day journey. Managed logistics of the overnight stays throughout the State of Alaska. AIDSRide Washington, Washington, D.C. Crew member, pre-set up team, Summer 2000 Bike ride to raise financial support for Food & Friends and Whitman Walker, two support agencies for those with HIV and AIDS. Over 1,600 riders and 300 crewmembers. Managed logistical support for the event one day in advance, including mapping out Tent City prior to riders arriving; identifying ideal traffic flow for each day; troubleshooting problems with various site locations, etc. First Book, Washington, D.C. and New York, NY Program team leader, 2001 to 2006 Managed bookplate drives during National Library Week for the firms of Bryan Cave, LLP and Greenberg Traurig over the course of five years. Food and Friends, Washington, D.C. Kitchen and delivery team member, Summer 2000 to Summer 2003 Prepared, packaged and delivered meals and groceries to more than 1,100 people living with HIV/AIDS and other life-challenging illnesses. Also involved as a United Way Campaign Speaker. Offender Aid and Restoration, Arlington County Detention Facility, Arlington, VA Volunteer Instructor / Peer Counselor, 1997 to 1999 Volunteers worked to provide life training and develop skills that are needed to obtain and maintain employment after incarceration. Managed classes of up to 20 students; conducted individual tutoring and mentoring. Presidential Classroom for Young Americans, Inc., Alexandria, VA Volunteer Instructor, several sessions from 1995 to 2005 A weeklong professional development opportunity for high school juniors and seniors from around the nation, focusing on the operational aspects of the U.S. Federal Government.
