2 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY This report serves as a resource about Rice s international degree-seeking students, as well as information on exchange and visiting students. Information about international scholars, who come to Rice as researchers, faculty members, short-term lecturers, and visiting research students is also included. All non-immigrant students and scholars must be tracked and reported through the Office of International Students & Scholars (OISS). A snapshot view was taken for this report (for student on 09/08/2016; for scholars on 07/01/2016), as the numbers are ever-changing throughout the year. The most recent International Education (IIE) Open Doors report published for and NAFSA Public Policy page (Source:2015 Open Doors Report, and serve as primary references. Information not included in this report: 1) Rice Intensive English students and 2) Special international guests and international delegations. In sum, Rice s international community continues to grow. In the past year alone, the OISS offered services to an overall population of over 3400 internationals. Rice continues to see a significant rise in the number of international applicants, offering the unique opportunity to select from the best and the brightest from around the globe. International degree-seeking students (not including exchange/ visiting students) represent 23.6% of the overall student population, providing a vibrant and diverse student body. Our international scholar population experienced a slight increase of 2.4%, after an already impressive growth of 17.1% from the previous year. We expect this increase to continue as Rice continues to expand its research, as well as partnering as we can in government-sponsored programs, primarily with scholars coming from Brazil and Turkey. The OISS is responsible for tracking, reporting, and providing services for over 3400 internationals at Rice. Note: During admissions season (in spring), this number rises to over This is a 3.1% increase from last year. (continued) Rice continues to see a rise in its international populations, with the most significant rises being the international graduate students and students pursuing Optional Practical Training (OPT) upon completing their studies. The overall international student population at Rice rose by 25% in the last 5 years, almost 90% in the last 10 years. 8 International Students in the USA Information What do international students contribute to the USA? (Source: 2015 Open Doors Report, International students contributed about $30.5 billion to the U.S. economy in International education contributed over $1.73 billion to the Texas economy in A record 974,926 foreign students studied in the U.S. in This is a 10% increase from the year before, and is the highest growth rate in 35 years. Texas is ranked third (after California and New York) among all the states in the U.S.A. in numbers of international students with 75,588 students. This is a 17.6% increase from the previous year. Rice not only continued to increase in total international student numbers, but also increased in the percentage of the student body that is international. Underrepresented regions of the world at Rice are Africa and the Middle East, while almost 80% of all Rice international students come from Asia. Country diversity has decreased by 8% in the last 10 years. 15 International Students in the USA Information Top 10 Countries/Regions in USA (Source: 2015 Open Doors Report, Seven of the top ten countries/regions represented in the USA are the same as Rice s top countries/regions. Vietnam, Japan, and Saudi Arabia made it to the top 10 countries represented in the US, but remain underrepresented at Rice. The same two continents represented in Rice s top 10 countries/regions are the same top two continents represented in the USA overall. China, India and South Korea have been the top three countries of origin for the past ten years. However, Brazil s government investment in international scholarships moved it into the sixth spot, with a 78% increase in Brazilian students in the US. In contrast, PhD level international students have increased by 27% over the last 10 years, while the MBA program has maintained a steady level of international students. The largest percent of international students at Rice University study in one of the Engineering fields. Natural Sciences and Social Sciences were second and third, respectively. Architecture, Music, and Business Administration remained almost the same as last year. As was the case with students, China is the leading country among those represented by international scholars at Rice. Spain Rice international scholar numbers increased this year, with a greatest increase in the number of H-1B visa holders and one-time visitors. International scholar numbers have almost doubled in the last 10 years. Rice s international scholar population has increased by 98% in the last 10 years. In the last year, the international scholar population in both the US and at Rice has increased by 2.4%. 22
