DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY Florida Istitute of Techology Revised 11/17 Doctoral Program Guidelies To receive the doctoral degree, the studet must 1) satisfy the prelimiary comprehesive (if offered); 2) complete a approved program of course work; 3) write a acceptable research proposal ad preset a semiar; 4) pass cumulative writte exams; 5) pass a oral comprehesive exam that icludes a semiar; 6) complete a sigificat origial research study; 7) prepare ad defed a dissertatio cocerig the research; ad 8) preset a semiar o the dissertatio research. Oce the first five requiremets have bee met, the studet files a formal petitio for admissio to doctoral cadidacy. The doctoral degree requiremets are described i some detail below alog with examples of the appropriate forms. Refer to the attached Doctoral Program Check List. Also cosult the Florida Tech catalog, the Graduate Programs Policy Maual ( ad the Florida Tech Thesis Maual ad Style Guide ( I. Diagostic ACS Exams. Eterig studets are expected to have had a miimum of oe year of udergraduate orgaic chemistry, physical chemistry, aalytical/istrumetal aalysis, ad iorgaic chemistry. Studets will be required to take multiple-choice diagostic ACS exams i these fields. The percetiles achieved i these exams will determie which courses they ca register for. These decisios must be made i cosultatio with academic advisors. II. Selectio of Advisor, Research Topic, ad Doctoral Committee. Durig their first semester, studets meet iformally with faculty members (miimum of three) to lear about the various research activities. Based o these iterviews, a research advisor is selected durig the first or secod semester with the cocurrece of the advisor ad the departmet head. A research topic is chose that is mutually agreeable to both the studet ad advisor. With the assistace of the advisor, the Doctoral Committee is omiated. This committee cosists of the advisor as chair ad at least three additioal members, oe of whom must be a full-time Graduate Faculty member outside the chemistry departmet. The departmet head ad the Director of Graduate Programs must approve this committee, geerally durig the secod semester but at least 60 days prior to the oral comprehesive exam. A Establishmet of Doctoral Dissertatio Committee form must be completed with the sigatures of all committee members ad filed with the Office of Graduate Programs. The Doctoral Committee serves i a advisory capacity throughout the remaider of the studet's doctoral program ad is resposible for formally evaluatig the studet's progress. III. Program of Study. With the assistace of the advisor (or the Placemet Committee), the program of study is prepared durig the first semester. (See the attached Doctoral Program of Study form.) It is kept i the Departmet office util it is submitted to the Registrar's Office alog with the Petitio to Graduate form, geerally two semesters before graduatio. If ay chages occur, the revised pla, approved by the advisor ad the Doctoral Committee, must be the oe submitted before graduatio. Studets egaged i research before admissio to doctoral cadidacy may register for Chemical Research (CHM 6095); a maximum of 18 credits couts toward the degree. All formal classes must be completed before admissio to doctoral cadidacy. Dissertatio i Chemistry (CHM 6999) may ot be take util the term i which the studet is admitted to doctoral cadidacy. A total of at least 18 semester credit hours of dissertatio must be take (3-12 credits/term, every term after admissio to cadidacy icludig summer util graduatio); a maximum of 30 credits cout toward the degree. Oce studets register for dissertatio, they must cotiue each semester util the dissertatio has bee accepted by Graduate Programs. Course work completed for the master's degree may fulfill a sigificat portio of the 33 credit hours of required doctoral course work; a request for trasfer credit evaluatio by the Departmet Head must be made durig the first semester. Up to 6 credit hours of 4000-level (3000- level o-chemistry) coursework may be icluded i the program pla, but the Permissio for Graduate Studet to Take Udergraduate Course form must be submitted to the Registrar s office before registratio. These courses are ot icluded i the graduate GPA util graduatio uless a request is submitted to the Registrar s office. The studet must register for Chemistry Graduate Semiar (CHM 5900) each semester (see detailed sectio below o CHM 5900). Studets who have already eared a MS degree from a accredited uiversity will eed to cosult with the Departmet Head by presetig the correspodig syllabi of their MS courses of their previous istitutio. Accordigly, the Departmet Head may approve selected courses for trasfer, or may approve the complete MS degree. I the latter case, your program pla will reflect that you have a approved MS degree (which will cout toward 30 credits of your 72 credits required for the PhD degree). Although, the uiversity system (BANNER/PAWS) will ot reflect these 30 credits, you will oly be required to take 42 additioal credits if you have a Departmet Head approved MS degree. List all your MS coursework i your program pla so as to avoid redudacy whe registerig for your additioal 12 credits of courses.

IV. Cumulative Exams (Writte Comprehesive Exam). The requiremet for a writte comprehesive examiatio is partly satisfied by passig six cumulative examiatios. (See attached Cumulative Examiatio Policy.) These exams are give oce per moth durig the fall ad sprig semesters. V. Dissertatio Research Proposal ad Semiar. The studet must prepare ad preset the proposed doctoral research project. The presetatio should occur durig the secod or third semester. Although the advisor will give assistace, the studet provides the majority of the effort. Extesive literature review is ecessary to become familiar with the sciece, materials, equipmet ad techiques. The proposal serves the purpose of explaiig the iteded research i sufficiet detail for the advisor ad advisory committee to evaluate it. This esures that the proposed dissertatio research is of suitable cotet ad duratio for a doctoral degree ad, if successfully completed, will meet acceptable scietific stadards. A good research proposal ca take may forms but i geeral it should be a well-orgaized, well-documeted statemet of a scietific problem ad a equally well-supported proposed solutio. The proposal should iclude a clear statemet of the problem, a thorough literature survey, the proposed research alog with ay prelimiary results, ad a timelie for completio of the project. I additio, if ay uusual techiques (e.g. ot previously used at Florida Tech) or special items of equipmet (e.g. equipmet which must be purchased, costructed, or borrowed) or special facilities (e.g. located off campus) are required, or for ay other uusual features of the proposed research, detailed descriptios should be provided. The fiished proposal should be a example of your best effort. It should be typed ad eat i appearace, with umbered pages. (See the attached Guidelies for Research Proposal for title page ad more details.) Your research proposal will be preseted i a semiar to the departmet. (See the attached semiar guidelies.) Schedule the semiar, with the approval of your Doctoral Committee ad the Semiar Coordiator, followed shortly thereafter by the committee meetig. Submit a copy of the proposal to each of the committee members at least oe week prior to the meetig. At the proposal meetig, the committee will either approve the proposal, or require alteratios before approval. If the proposal is approved, the members will sig the Doctoral Dissertatio Proposal Coferece Report / Applicatio to Doctoral Cadidacy (obtai this form from the departmet secretary; see example attached) which will be kept i your file. This form is submitted to the Office of Graduate Programs oly whe the other cadidacy requiremets have bee met. This satisfies the Uiversity requiremet that the proposal coferece be held after the Comprehesive Exams. The siged approval form does ot guaratee that you will complete your degree, but it does demostrate that your proposal was judged to be soud. Keep oe copy of the form for your records. The secod copy is retaied, alog with a copy of your proposal, by the departmet. If the proposal is ot acceptable, you will be give istructios as to the proper course of actio. VI. Oral Comprehesive Exam ad Semiar. The Chemistry Departmet s Oral Comprehesive Exam cosists of a semiar ad a presetatio before the Doctoral Committee of a origial research proposal geerated by the studet. The studet also should be prepared to aswer more geeral questios based o their coursework. This exam is take oly after all other requiremets for admissio to cadidacy (i.e. Sectios I V) have bee completed ad must be at least oe caledar year before graduatio. The chief objective is to cultivate the studet's ability to develop ad preset a research project i a area differet from the studet's dissertatio research. This is a skill that is expected after graduatio. Readig the curret literature ofte geerates ideas. The proposal must be urelated to the preset or past research of the advisor. Before developig the proposal, a oe-page outlie of the proposed topic must be approved by the committee members at least oe moth prior to the oral exam. The proposal should be writte, with umbered pages, i a format appropriate for submissio to a gratig agecy. (See attachmet for title page.) This documet serves as part of the writte comprehesive exam. The sigificace of the problem, origiality of the approach, ad feasibility of the method must be made clear. The followig sectios are recommeded: 1. Specific Aims. Describe cocisely ad realistically what the specific research is iteded to accomplish ad ay hypotheses to be tested. Oe page maximum (double-spaced) is recommeded. 2. Backgroud ad Sigificace. Briefly sketch the backgroud for the proposal, critically evaluate existig kowledge, ad specifically idetify the gaps that the project is iteded to fill. Iclude pertiet literature refereces. Two to three pages are recommeded. 2

3. Research Desig ad Methods. Describe the research desig ad the procedures to be used to accomplish the specific aims of the project. Iclude the meas by which the data will be collected, aalyzed, ad iterpreted. The project will ot be carried out at Florida Tech ad, therefore, is ot limited to the resources at had. Describe ay ew methodology ad its advatage over existig methodologies. Discuss the potetial difficulties ad limitatios of the proposed procedures, cosiderig alterative approaches. Seve-page text maximum is recommeded. 4. Summary. Discuss the expected outcomes ad how they relate to the goals of the project. Oe or two pages are recommeded. The proposal must be submitted to the committee at least oe week i advace of the oral exam date. A Oral Examiatio Aoucemet must be set to the Office of Graduate Programs at least two weeks i advace of the exam date (see example attachmet). The exam time (e.g. 6:00pm) is after the public semiar (e.g. 5:00 pm). A official Examiatio Report (obtai this form from the departmet secretary; see example attached) is completed at the ed of the examiatio. Also, brig the Doctoral Dissertatio Proposal Coferece Report / Applicatio to Doctoral Cadidacy form, which should be i your departmet file (see Sectio V) for sigatures. To provide additioal experiece i givig scietific talks, you will preset your comprehesive exam proposal i a semiar to the departmet. (See the attached semiar guidelies.) Schedule the semiar, with the approval of your Doctoral Committee ad the Semiar Coordiator, for a date shortly before your exam. VII. Admissio to Cadidacy. After completig all the items above, the Departmet submits the Examiatio Report for the Oral Comprehesive Exam alog with the completed Doctoral Dissertatio Proposal Coferece Report / Applicatio to Doctoral Cadidacy form (see Sectios V ad VI) to the Office of Graduate Programs. A miimum GPA of 3.2 is required. Studets who pass the oral comprehesive exam are etitled to receive a M.S. degree i Chemistry if they have followed the procedure detailed later. VIII. Research. This stage begis durig the first year ad is geerally the most ejoyable. See the attached guidelies for maitaiig a proper research otebook. Your research advisor may provide you with other guidelies. The advisor will be resposible for guidig both the cadidate's research ad preparatio of the dissertatio. Durig the period of research, the advisor will evaluate the studet's progress at the ed of each semester ad place a copy of this evaluatio, with the studet's sigature, i the studet's file. At least aually, the studet should submit a writte progress report ad meet with the doctoral committee, together or with the members idividually, to discuss the dissertatio progress. A grade of U, D or F i a research or dissertatio course or a usatisfactory progress otificatio from a graduate studet committee will result i removal from the doctoral degree program ad placemet ito the o-thesis Master s optio. If the studet already has a MS degree they will be removed from the departmet. IX. Dissertatio. I geeral, the writig of the dissertatio will require about oe semester. May times the first draft of the dissertatio ca be prepared while research is i progress. Uder your advisor's directio, prepare at least oe copy of your dissertatio i rough draft. After makig revisios as directed by your advisor, submit oe corrected copy to each of the remaiig committee members for their review at least oe moth prior to the defese. (See the attachmet ad the FIT style guide ( ) ad for format details.) Although i some cases a advisor may separately approve portios of a dissertatio draft, the committee members are uder o obligatio to review aythig short of a totally complete dissertatio. Withi two weeks, committee members should otify the advisor of ay major revisios (research or text) they deem ecessary. Make additioal correctios or chages as required. X. Dissertatio Semiar ad Defese. This cosists of a departmetal semiar ad a committee meetig. You will preset your research ad aswer questios related to your graduate study. With your advisor's approval, schedule a committee meetig for the fial oral defese. Note that this meetig should be completed at least two weeks prior to the date of graduatio. (See curret deadlies.) Schedule a semiar time with the semiar coordiator to preset your research to the departmet prior to the fial defese. The exam time (e.g. 6:00pm) is after the public semiar (e.g. 5:00 pm). A Oral Defese Aoucemet must be set to the Office of Graduate Programs at least two weeks i advace of the exam date (see example attachmet). Submit to each committee member a copy of your dissertatio i its fial form at least oe week prior to the fial defese. The fial approved versio of the dissertatio (5 copies miimum) is submitted to the Office of Graduate Programs for bidig ad microfilmig alog 3

with a additioal copy of the title page ad abstract ad a completed ProQuest Publishig Agreemet Form ad a Survey of Eared Doctorates Form Please ote that ay delays i the completio of the dissertatio or failure to schedule ad complete the fial defese by the deadlies established by the Uiversity may require the studet to delay graduatio util the followig term. XI. Petitio to Graduate. To avoid a late fee, the Petitio to Graduate Form (attached) alog with the Doctoral Program of Study Form (attached) must be filed with the Registrar before the deadlie, geerally early i the semester before the semester of graduatio. 4

FLORIDA TECH CHEMISTRY DEPARTMENT CUMULATIVE EXAMINATION POLICY To quote Florida Istitute of Techology's Uiversity Catalog: "Each ew [chemistry] doctoral studet is required to pass six cumulative exams; at least four must be i the chose area of cocetratio ad up to two may be i a additioal area. Studets must begi these exams i their secod semester i residece. Four exams are offered each semester. A maximum of 11 attempts is allowed. These requiremets are implemeted as follows: The studet s Doctoral Committee will determie the exact distributio of areas for the exams. Cumulative examiatios will be give durig the fall ad sprig semesters. Each doctoral studet must begi takig cumulative exams by the secod semester of residece durig which the studet is erolled i graduate chemistry courses; time spet i a M.S. program does ot cout. Examiatios are graded o a pass/low-pass/fail basis; a pass couts as oe poit, ad a low-pass couts as oe-half poit. Each studet must accumulate six poits withi eleve tries. At least two of the six poits must be eared as full "pass" grades. Oce a studet has started takig cumulative exams, the studet must take a exam every moth that cumulative exams are offered util the requiremet is completed, uless excused by the Head of the Chemistry Departmet. A skipped exam will cout as a failure. The first examiatio a studet takes is "free": a pass or low-pass couts as such, but a failure o the first exam does ot cout as a attempt. Failures o exams after the first are couted. Examiatios will be offered each time i the four broad areas of chemistry (aalytical, iorgaic, orgaic, physical). At least six days before the exam date, each eligible graduate studet will otify the Cumulative Exam Coordiator of their chose area for the exam. Examiatios will take o the order of two hours each. Results, icludig a update o the studet's stadig i the cumulative examiatio program, will be reported via to the studet, with a writte copy placed i the studet s file i the departmet office. Revised 08/2015 9

Guidelies for Dissertatio Research Proposal The proposal should provide a clear statemet of the proposed research, i sufficiet detail to allow a meaigful review by the studet's research committee, but ot so much detail that it substitutes for the fial dissertatio. The proposal should be l0-15 pages (double-spaced) i legth with umbered pages. The followig orgaizatio is suggested: Title Page. See example o ext page. Statemet of Proposed Research. Iclude a clear cocise statemet of what the specific research is iteded to accomplish ad its sigificace. (1page) Itroductio. A review of what is kow about the subject relevat to the proposal, critically evaluatig the existig kowledge ad idetifyig the gaps that the project is iteded to fill. Use refereces as appropriate. (4-5 pages) Outlie of experimetal Approach. Describe the research desig ad the procedures to be used to accomplish the specific aims of the project. Iclude the meas by which the data will be collected, aalyzed, ad iterpreted. Discuss the potetial difficulties ad limitatios of the proposed procedures, cosiderig alterative approaches. Iclude ay prelimiary results. (4-6 pages) Summary. Discuss the expected outcomes ad how they relate to the goals of the project. (l - 2 pages) Timelie. Itemize the proposed research tasks, icludig the writig of the dissertatio, with estimated dates for each so that you ad the committee have a realistic idea of the legth of time required to complete your degree. (1 page) Refereces. List oly those cited i the proposal. 10

Whe It's Your Tur To Give A Semiar: Some Do's ad Do'ts l. Set up a pla for the talk. Esure that: (i) You Make the aim of the work clear at the begiig. (ii) You preset results clearly. (iii) You iterpret the results so that the audiece ca see how the work doe leads to the uderstadig (or ew methodology) sought. 2. If you decide to iclude o-techical material (e.g. photos of equipmet, co-workers, etc.), it should go at the ed of the talk. No-techical material is ot required. 3. Slides/overheads should be clearly legible. Typed letterig o artwork should be avoided because it is usually illegible o slides prepared from the artwork. 4. "Mixed media" presetatios are harder to follow. Geerally a semiar is best give etirely from trasparecies or etirely from slides. 5. Do ot make slides or overheads of typescript ad the read that to the audiece. 6. Time the talk. It should be miutes. If you are sigificatly over or uder that legth of time (i.e.> l0 miutes) you will make a egative impressio o the audiece. 7. Make it clear to the audiece whe you have fiished the talk. Offer to aswer questios. 8. REHEARSE THE TALK BEFOREHAND. Have the slides/trasparecies ready before rehearsals ad go over the talk just as you pla to give it. Recruit a audiece - other studets i your group or i the departmet ad your supervisor. 9. Do ot preset excessive data. It simply serves to add cofusio. Negative results ca be meaigful ad may be icluded where appropriate. 12

Laboratory Notebook A laboratory otebook is a permaet record of what traspires i the laboratory. The otebook is cosidered a legal documet ad ofte every page must be witessed as well as dated. Patet rights o a ew discovery deped o establishig the exact time of the discovery. The otebook forms the basis for scietific papers ad reports sice the first step i the process is the collectio of data. Each studet should have a otebook with boud (ot spiral), umbered pages for recordig all data, observatios, commets ad otes regardig the experimets. Record all your observatios as well as the data. For example, if the laboratory temperature chages sigificatly or you spill a sample ad cotiue to use it, ote this; whe you aalyze your results you may fid that later data differs from earlier data ad the otebook record will provide the explaatio. Record everythig directly ito the otebook i ik; this is meat to be a permaet record. If you make a mistake, do't obliterate the mistake; simply put a lie through it with a short explaatio as to why you thik it is icorrect. You may fid later that this data was more correct tha other data. Do't use scraps of paper with the itet of later trasferrig the iformatio to the otebook. These scraps may be lost or become scrambled. Do't worry about havig a perfectly ordered, eat otebook, as log as it is sufficietly labeled ad eat that you ca uderstad the iformatio later. Be certai to iclude uits ad a estimate of the ucertaity for each type of data you collect. It is more importat that you record everythig directly ito the otebook. Your otebook is the property of the Uiversity ad remais with your advisor after you graduate. 14

Guidelies for Doctoral Studets Wishig to Ear a M.S. i Chemistry (Nothesis Optio) Graduate Policy allows a M.S. degree to be obtaied while workig towards the Ph.D. The followig documets are required ad should be submitted together (except item 4) to the Registrar s Office (Ms. Kari Almasi): 1. Master s Degree Program Pla completed ad siged. Alog with the four core graduate chemistry courses, five additioal o-research graduate courses are required alog with CHM 5095, a total of 30 credits. A fial program examiatio is icluded i CHM Petitio to Graduate form for the M.S. i Chemistry (8031). There is a late fee (after 4/1/15 for Fall 2015 graduatio; after 9/11/15 for Sprig 2016 graduatio). Regalia must be purchased if you wish to participate i the ceremoy. 3. Letter of support from the departmet head. 4. Examiatio Report for the M.S. fial examiatio completed ad siged by the committee members. Studets ca substitute three credits of CHM 6095 for CHM 5095, i which case the doctoral oral comprehesive examiatio (the origial proposal) serves as the fial program examiatio. This would have the same date as the Ph.D. comprehesive exam but a separate form. This form should be submitted to the Office of Graduate Programs. 15

Guidelies for Dissertatio The dissertatio is oe of the most importat parts of a doctoral degree ad as such it should be a example of the studet's best ability. I clear uderstadable laguage the dissertatio presets what the research objectives were, why they were established, how they were pursued (the experimetal techiques ad tools employed), what the results of the ivestigatios are ad what the results mea. There is o absolute restrictio o the legth of the dissertatio; the appropriate legth is that i which all of the above ca be accomplished without ay filler or paddig. The dissertatio should preset a cosistet clear style of writig. A cosistet tese should be used. I geeral, the past tese should be used to describe what was doe or what occurred ad the preset tese should be used for existig results or facts. As always, care must be exercised to make clear distictios betwee facts, observatios ad suggestios. This is especially true whe makig referece to the work of others. It is recommeded that refereces be cited by use of the America Chemical Society joural format. Prior to startig the actual writig of the dissertatio prepare a detailed outlie ad a complete set of figures ad tables. This outlie should show all of the poits to be made i the dissertatio. The major advisor should review the outlie before the dissertatio proper is started. The first copy of the dissertatio submitted for review by the major advisor should be a typed copy icludig figures ad tables. The fial copy submitted to the committee must be i completely fiished form. It is recommeded that the followig format be employed: Prelimiary Pages. These iclude (i order) Title Page, Approval Page, Abstract, Table of Cotets, List of Figures, List of Tables ad Ackowledgemets. Itroductio. Backgroud iformatio is preseted, closely related refereces are reviewed, ad the "what ad why" of the research is stated. This sectio should ed with a clear statemet of objectives. Experimetal Procedure. A very importat sectio i which clear detailed descriptios of all experimetal details are give. All equipmet ad materials must be icluded as well as procedures employed. Diagrams ad figures should be used for ay ew or uusual equipmet. Results ad Discussio. These may be two separate sectios or may be combied. If separate, results should come first ad should be a presetatio of the results, i the form of figures, tables ad graphs. The the discussio sectio should follow ad should make referece to, explai ad discuss the previously preseted results. I may cases it is easier to combie results ad discussio ito oe sectio. I this format the idividual results are preseted ad the discussed prior to goig o to the ext result or class or results. The results should be preseted i a logical order. The order of presetatio should be that which makes the results most easily uderstood. The chroological order i which the experimets were performed should be of little cocer. Coclusios. This very importat sectio should clearly idicate the coclusios that ca be made as a result of the research. The sectio should be logically cosistet with the previously stated objectives ad previously preseted results. A idicatio of suggested future study should be made. Appedices. A appedix is a optioal sectio. Some possible uses of a appedix are: presetatio of extesive data tables (summary tables should be used i text); presetatio of results which are tagetial to the dissertatio. Notes: Compouds, especially ew oes, should be characterized i a maer that will permit publicatio i a ACS joural. Tables ad Figures should be located as close to the poit of referece as possible without leavig a abormal amout of white space i the text. 16

(The followig iformatio is adapted from the Graduate Studet Hadbook prepared by the Departmet of Biological Scieces. Also refer to the Florida Tech Thesis Maual ad Style Guide ( DISSERTATION PREPARATION. SELECTION OF A JOURNAL FORMAT. This maual is to be used as a referece i all questios regardig the format ad style of proposals ad dissertatios. I order to make a easy trasitio from the dissertatio to a joural-ready mauscript, the style ad format of tables ad figures, the system of referecig ad the format for the literature cited should follow those of the America Chemical Society jourals. I this way, figures ad tables will ot have to be re-draw, ad your refereces will already be i the format required by the joural. If there is a problem i iterpretig the joural style, the advisor should be cosulted. Cofereces with the advisor cocerig specific problems of style ad format of the dissertatio should be held well i advace of whe you type the fial mauscript. I this way, difficulties ca be worked out before too much time, effort, frustratio, ad moey have bee expeded i preparig the dissertatio for submissio. STANDARDIZING PAGE AND TEXT FORMATS. It is importat to emphasize that YOU SHOULD NOT USE ANOTHER DISSERTATION AS AN EXAMPLE ON WHICH TO PATTERN YOUR DISSERTATION. NOT ALL DISSERTATIONS HAVE FOLLOWED THE RULES ADEQUATELY, AND THE RULES HAVE CHANGED OVER THE YEARS. Word Processor Specificatios. Select 12 poit with a plai-face type (Roma or Square Serif), rather tha script, italic, or some other orametal style whe pritig your dissertatio. If there is doubt about the size or style of type, clarify the matter with your advisor before preparig the mauscript. The same type style must be used throughout the paper; do ot mix type styles. Do ot justify the right margi; ot all word processors do a good job without leavig very irregular spacig withi the text lie. Spacig ad Idetios. The text must be double-spaced (3 lies per ich) icludig tables, captios ad refereces. The first setece of each paragraph should be ideted five spaces. Ay quotatio of six typed lies or fewer should use the same spacig as the arrative text. Quotatios loger tha six typed lies should be iset. Iset quotatios do ot require the use of quotatio marks. Margis. All typig must fit withi the prited margis (1½ iches at the left, ad 1 ich at the top, bottom, ad right) except for the page umber that is placed about oe ich from the top of the page ad eve with the right-had margi. All computer data, illustratios, ad tables that led themselves to reproductio o 8½ x 11 ich pages must coform to the margi requiremets i every way. All illustratios o photographic or other acceptable paper must coform to the margis. Pagiatio. Every page i the mauscript EXCEPT the Title page ad the Approval page must be umbered. These two pages are cosidered to be pages i ad ii, but o pagiatio umeral is show o these two pages. Prelimiary pages - lower case Roma umerals (iii, iv, v, vi, etc.) are used. The first page o which a umber appears is the Abstract page, which is umbered iii ad is placed right after the Approval page. Text ad Supplemetary pages - Arabic umerals are used. The first page of the arrative text begis with 1 ad the umberig rus cosecutively to the ed of the mauscript. Pages are umbered cosecutively, as are tables, figures, ad equatios. Begi every major divisio of a dissertatio o a ew page. These major divisios are: Abstract, Dedicatio (optioal), Table of Cotets, List of Tables, List of Figures, Ackowledgmets, Itroductio, Materials ad Methods, Results, Discussios, Refereces, ad Appedix. Subheadigs or subdivisios withi chapters ad sectios do ot start o a ew page but are placed o the page wherever they appear i the developmet of the text. The oly exceptio is whe this produces what is termed a "orpha" (i.e., the last lie of the page is the headig itself). I this case, start the headig o the followig page. 17

Placemet of Page Numbers. The Roma umerals of the prelimiary pages are cetered at the bottom margi. All other page umbers are placed i the upper right-had corer of the page (oe ich below the top edge of the paper ad just iside the right-had margi). Title pages that itroduce a ew sectio are couted but o page umber is prited. PARTS OF THE MANUSCRIPT. A dissertatio mauscript ordiarily has three mai parts: (1) the prelimiary pages, (2) the text, ad (3) the supplemetary pages. Prelimiary Pages. (listed i the order i which they appear i the mauscript) iclude: Title page Approval page Abstract Table of Cotets List of Figures (if more tha oe figure is used) List of Tables (if more tha oe table is used) Ackowledgmets (the Dedicatio page, if ay, is placed directly before or after the ackowledgmets page) The Text. (listed i the order i which they appear i the mauscript) iclude: Itroductio/Review of the Literature Body of the dissertatio with the larger divisios (Materials ad Methods, Results, Discussio ad/or Coclusio.) Supplemetary Pages. (listed i the order i which they appear i the mauscript) iclude: Refereces (required i all dissertatios or records of study) Appedices (if eeded). All prelimiary page titles, all chapter desigatios ad titles, ad supplemetary page titles are cetered at the top of the page (withi the margis) ad are typed i bold with oly iitial letters capitalized. Examples of some of the major parts of the mauscript are preseted i Fig. 1 through 3. Title Page. The Title page must follow exactly the style, spacig, ad form of the example i Fig. 1. Poits to ote particularly are: The title is typed with iitial capital letters, sigle spaced (if the title is more tha oe lie i legth) ad cetered withi the margis of the paper. There is o page umber o the Title page (although it is cosidered to be page i). The full legal ame of the author, without iitials ad without desigatio of professio, military rak, or marriage is listed as show. The full ame of the degree to be awarded is writte out with iitial capital letters. Degrees are awarded oly i May ad December. The appropriate moth ad year must be show o this page. Approval Page. The Approval page, followig exactly the style, spacig, ad form of the example show i Fig. 2, must bear the origial sigatures of all members of your advisory committee ad the Departmet Head. Care should be take to assure that they sig i black ik, sice other colors do ot reproduce well. The umber of members o your advisory committee determies the umber of sigature spaces o the page. The positio (i terms of the committee) of each member of the committee must be idicated uder each sigature. The committee as listed o this page must iclude all the ames idicated as beig committee members o the exam aoucemet for the defese. Particular poits to ote are: The title is typed with iitial capital letters, sigle-spaced (if more tha oe lie o legth), ad cetered withi the margis of the paper. There is o page umber o the approval page (though it is cosidered to be page ii). 18

Your full legal ame, without iitials ad without desigatio of professio, military rak, or marriage is listed as show. If your committee has co-chairpersos, the each is listed by positio as "Committee Co-chairperso". If the Departmet Head serves also as a member or as Chairperso or Co-chairperso of your advisory committee, add a secod idetifyig lie uder the sigature. Degrees are awarded oly i May ad December. The appropriate moth ad year must be show at the bottom of the Approval page. Abstract. Your dissertatio must cotai a Abstract placed immediately after the Approval page. Three hudred fifty (350) words is the maximum legth of the Abstract for Uiversity Microfilms Iteratioal. Abstracts of dissertatios must be doublespaced (for microfilm clarity). The Abstract should cotai the followig: A clear statemet of the problem you researched ad its sigificace. A brief descriptio of the method of ivestigatio. A explaatio of data aalysis. A statemet of coclusios ad how they relate to the origial research problem. A headig followig the style of the example i Fig. 3 must appear o the Abstract of your dissertatio. Particular poits to ote are: Numberig of pages starts with the Abstract page (`iii'). The word ABSTRACT is cetered at the top of the page withi the margis ad is typed i capital letters. The title of the dissertatio is typed exactly as o the Title page with iitial capital letters (ad sigle spaced if more tha oe lie i legth) a triple space below the word ABSTRACT. Your full legal ame is listed beeath the last lie desigatig the title. Your advisory chairperso is listed below the lie desigatig your ame. NOTE: Whe there are co-chairpersos o your advisory committee, both are listed o the Abstract page. EXAMPLE: Major Advisors: Dr. Amy Wilso Dr. Walt Smith The text of the Abstract starts a triple space beeath the headig with a five-space (1/2-ich) idetio. The Abstract text is typed double-spaced, ad is cosistet with the spacig style followed i the text. Table of Cotets. The Table of Cotets idicates the major divisios ad pricipal (or first-order) subheadigs of the mauscript. It should provide a aalytical presetatio of the materials i the study ad page umbers o which the sectios start. Prelimiary page listigs i the Table of Cotets start with the Abstract (iii) ad must iclude all prelimiary pages (iclusio of the Table of Cotets page itself is optioal). All divisios of the text (i.e., chapters or sectios) ad subheadigs withi each chapter or sectio must be listed i the Table of Cotets. The subordiatio of the subheadigs should be show by the appropriate spacig, idetio s, ad capitalizatio All supplemetary pages (Refereces ad Appedices, if ay) must be listed i the Table of Cotets. The umberig, wordig, ad pagiatio of titles ad headigs must be exactly the same i the Table of Cotets as they are o the pages of the mauscript. 19

Ackowledgmets. It is importat ad appropriate that you always ackowledge those people ad orgaizatios that provided sigificat cotributios to your research ad dissertatio. Also, be sure to ackowledge ay fiacial support that you received for your project. The ackowledgmet page should be a separate page with "Ackowledgemet" i bold letters cetered at the top of the page ad the page umber show as a roma umeral cetered at the bottom of the page. Dedicatio. A dedicatio (to parets, spouse, etc.) is optioal. If icluded, it should be o a separate page, utitled, sigle spaced, with the page umber show as a roma umeral cetered at the bottom. Text. Chapters are desigated by Arabic umerals used cosecutively throughout the arrative. The chapter desigatio (e.g., Chapter 1) i bold letters should be cetered withi the margis at the top of the page. The chapter title also is i bold ad is cetered below the chapter desigatio. Each chapter begis o a ew page. Chapter titles are separated from the text by either three or four lies. Each chapter begis o a ew page. Subdivisios withi these chapters do ot begi o a ew page. Space ad ecoomic cosideratios of jourals used as patters for style ad format ofte demad brevity i articles. The more expaded presetatio of a dissertatio may require a more elaborate system for developmet ad divisio tha a joural employs. If this is ecessary, you could use a system of subdivisios withi the chapters. Tables ad Figures. Tables ad figures must be able to stad aloe without beefit of the text. The table titles, figure captios, legeds, ad symbols must be sufficietly complete so that a reader ca uderstad the data without the eed to refer to the text for explaatio. However, avoid excessively log captios; iterpretatio of the data belogs i the text. No part of a table or figure ca ecroach ito a margi, icludig captios, labels, etc.. If two or more titles or captios would otherwise be idetically worded, the you should icorporate some differetiatig word or phrase ito each. The title usually is above the table while the captio is below the figure. Tables ad figures should be placed as close as possible after the first referece made to them i the text. For a short table or small figure, this may be o the text page itself, i which case it should be separated from the text by triple spacig at the top ad bottom. A full-page table or figure should be placed o the page followig the first referece to it. Each table or figure i the mai body of the dissertatio must have a umber ad a title. The umberig should be cosecutive from the begiig through to the ed of the dissertatio. I this regard, you have two basic choices of format: (1) umber the tables or figures cosecutively (i.e., Table 1, Table 2, Table 3, etc.) throughout the etire documet; or (2) use a dual umber system i which tables are umbered cosecutively withi each chapter ad i which each umber is preceded by the chapter umber (i.e., Table 1.1, Table 1.2, Table 1.3, etc. i Chapter 1, ad the Table 2.1, Table 2.2, Table 2.3, etc. for Chapter 2). Whe there are tables ad figures i the appedix, they should be umbered Table A-1, Table A-2, etc. i Appedix A ad Table B-1, Table B-2, etc. i Appedix B. If tables (or illustratios) must be placed sideways o the page, the the top of the table (or illustratio) should be at the bidig side of the paper. Tables loger tha oe page should repeat at the top of the followig page(s): the table umber, the complete title, ad the word (cotiued), ad the ecessary colum headigs for ease i readig the table. Likewise, for figures that exted over more tha oe page, the captio should be o each page. List of Tables ad List of Figures. The titles of all tables ad figures must be trascribed exactly (with their umbers) ad i order o the List of Tables ad List of Figures, respectively. Whe a title is exceptioally log, you may trascribe oly the first lie i the List of Tables or Figures providig that the first lie clearly idicates the cotet of the table or figure ad adequately differetiates betwee it ad other tables or figures. A List of Figures or List of Tables page is ot ecessary whe the paper cotais oly oe table or figure. Figures. Care ad some forethought should be give to preparig the illustratios for your dissertatio. If ecessary, color may be used, but uless absolutely ecessary, its use is discouraged sice the colors will ot be duplicated by most copiers. Differet lie styles ad/or symbols ca be more effective at distiguishig data. Computer graphics are ecouraged if they are of sufficietly high quality ad fots ad styles are the same as the rest of the dissertatio. Most chemical structures look better ad ca be draw more quickly usig a computer istead of templates. 23

To make your figures as effective as possible, try to refrai from packig too much iformatio ito oe graph. Usually oly about ie symbols for differet curves ca be distiguished (X's, ad ope ad closed circles, squares, triagles, ad iverted triagles) o oe graph. If a figure is too large to fit withi the margis, it may be photographically reduced. Be wary of usig a copier to make successive reductios of a draft graph from which to draw a fial figure. Each time a graph is copied, it becomes progressively distorted util the axes are at aythig but a 90 o agle! Ideally, figure legeds should be o the same page as the figures. Leged orietatio must agree with the orietatio (portrait or ladscape) of the figure. The page o which the figure appears is umbered cosecutively, with the page umber placed i its usual positio. O the List of Figures page, the umber of the page o which the figure appears is the page umber that is to be recorded opposite the figure umber ad title. Reduced tables, charts, ad figures must be large eough to read easily (miimum size for legibility is 1.5 mm for umbers ad capital letters). Refereces. The system of referecig the sources of iformatio used i the dissertatio must follow the method used by the America Chemical Society jourals. Bibliographical etries should iclude oly those sources of materials cited directly i the text of the dissertatio. If you wish to list geeral refereces cosulted ad used as backgroud study, the these may be listed as a subdivisio to the Refereces sectio. Some subheadig title such as "Supplemetal Sources Cosulted" should be added at the coclusio of the sources cited directly, ad the backgroud materials may be listed alphabetically by author ad should iclude the pertiet iformatio for proper documetatio. EDITING YOUR MANUSCRIPT. At the risk of overstatig the obvious, if you are at all usure of the spellig of a word, USE A DICTIONARY or a spellig checker o a computer/word processor. Also, be careful to use words correctly. A excellet source book i this regard is Morto S. Freema's A Treasury for Word Lovers, ISI Press, Philadelphia, I editig your mauscript, you should check especially that your spellig is cosistet (stadard America) i all words that have alterative spelligs; i geographical, trade, ad people's ames; i abbreviatios; ad i uits. The same holds true with regard to spacig. I proof-readig your dissertatio, may mistakes may be caught if, after readig it frot to back, you read your dissertatio from back to frot. Too ofte the tedecy is to read what should be there rather tha what is there. Refereces. Refereces require careful, albeit tedious, checkig. Some aspects to check i particular are: Similar refereces should be cited i the same way with respect to iformatio give, capitalizatio, ad spacig. The dates should agree with those give i the text. The spellig ad order of ames (whe there is more tha oe author) should agree with those cited i the text. Whe more tha oe referece is cited, the order of citatios should be doe cosistetly (i.e., by date, alphabetically, or whatever). The refereces i the referece sectio(s) should be i a cosistet alphabetical style. The referece must iclude the complete abbreviated title ad begiig ad edig pages. Figures. Figures also should be stadardized. Some aspects to check i particular are: Similar figures should be set up i the same format, especially with regard to axis labels, capitalizatio, ad symbols. Maps must have latitude ad logitude idicatios or, if the area uder cosideratio is small (less tha a few square kilometers), they should have a orth arrow ad a scale. All symbols should be defied. 24

Table of Cotets, Figure Legeds, ad Tables. Agai, cosistecy is of key importace. Some aspects to check i particular are: All headigs, table titles, ad figure legeds should correspod exactly to those idicated i the Table of Cotets, List of Figures, ad List of Tables (exceptios: if symbols are defied or if a scale is give i a figure leged, they eed ot be icluded i the List of Figures). A table or figure umber cited i the text should correspod to the correct table or figure. All tables should have the same format as far as capitalizatio, both i the table titles ad table bodies. All foototes i tables ad refereces i both tables ad figures should be formatted cosistetly. For example, if oe table refereces T. Doe as "Doe (1984)", the all tables use the same format, as opposed to "Doe, 1984" or "Source: Doe (1984)". Acroyms ad Abbreviatios. All acroyms ad abbreviatios (except for stadard uits) should be defied the first time that they are used i the Abstract ad the agai the first time that they are used i the text. Uits. Uits should be displayed i a cosistet maer (oly oe system is used, e.g., mg/l ad mm/hr or mg L -1 ad mm hr -1, ot mg/l ad mm hr -1 ) accordig to the style used by the ACS jourals. If metric uits are used, the all measuremets should be metric, uless special custom dictates otherwise. This applies to all parts of the dissertatio - text, tables, ad figures. Oe space should separate the uit from the umber. Statistics. Cosideratio of accuracy ad precisio i measured or calculated values is most importat. Without such iformatio, your results will have limited applicatio. Be sure that you use the appropriate umber of sigificat figures cosistetly. Likewise, you should always state the umber of replicates, meas, ad stadard deviatios, if applicable. The use of advaced statistics has eabled scietists to ucover a wide rage of correlatio s ad to test for sigificace. Each statistical test cited i your dissertatio should be fully refereced ad coform to stadard omeclature ad procedure. There are may textbooks ad referece books available providig discussios of error ad ucertaity i the measuremet of properties. SUGGESTED STYLE MANUALS. No oe should assume that these pages aswer the may questios of style arisig durig the course of preparig a dissertatio. Agai, refer to the Florida Tech Thesis Maual ad Style Guide, available i the Departmet ad at the campus bookstore. The ACS Style Guide (Washigto, 1988) is aother useful resource. DEADLINES At least seve weeks prior to aticipated graduatio, you should preset your dissertatio to your advisor for review. The dissertatio must be successfully defeded before the fial examiatio week (oe week prior to commecemet). You must tur at least five copies of your dissertatio ito the Office of Graduate Programs o later tha the Moday before commecemet. All other uiversity deadlies are listed olie I additio, you should coordiate closely with your advisor o deadlies that they may require. COPYING AND BINDING The curret Thesis/Dissertatio Bidig Istructios describe the details, costs ad deadlies. These are set to graduate studets registered for dissertatio. Studets ca obtai additioal copies at the Office of Graduate Programs. I additio to the copies of your dissertatio, several other forms must be tured ito the Office of Graduate Programs. You must brig alog your copy of the completed Petitio to Graduate form, showig that the bidig fee has bee paid, or a separate receipt for the paid bidig charges (especially if you wish to have more tha five copies boud). As a Ph.D. cadidate, you must also attach a completed Survey of Eared Doctorate form (available at the Office of Graduate Programs) ad, i a separate evelope, a copy of your abstract with a completed ProQuest Publishig Agreemet form (also available at Graduate Programs). If you wish to copyright your abstract, you must also eclose the ecessary fee i the form of a certified check. 25

Pla to sped at least 15 miutes i the Office of Graduate Programs while all of the paperwork is beig completed. You will receive a receipt from the Graduate Office vouchig that you have tured i a acceptable dissertatio. This will be your oly proof that you did ideed tur i your dissertatio, so keep it util you receive your boud copy. 26
