3 Introduction Every school has its own story to tell. The context in which teaching and learning takes place influences the processes and procedures by which the school makes decisions around curriculum, instruction, and assessment. The context also impacts the way a school stays faithful to its vision. Many factors contribute to the overall narrative such as an identification of stakeholders, a description of stakeholder engagement, the trends and issues affecting the school, and the kinds of programs and services that a school implements to support student learning. The purpose of the Executive Summary (ES) is to provide a school with an opportunity to describe in narrative form the strengths and challenges it encounters. By doing so, the public and members of the school community will have a more complete picture of how the school perceives itself and the process of self-reflection for continuous improvement. This summary is structured for the school to reflect on how it provides teaching and learning on a day to day basis. Page 1
4 Description of the School Describe the school's size, community/communities, location, and changes it has experienced in the last three years. Include demographic information about the students, staff, and community at large. What unique features and challenges are associated with the community/communities the school serves? is K-12 with a total enrollment of 362 students which includes about 12 students in our home school program. ECS is focused on the salvation and spiritual growth (discipleship) of its students, parents, faculty, staff and administration. We desire that our discipleship influence impact everyone associated with Emmanuel. The setting for this discipleship is an academic setting. It is our belief that our intellect (mind) is the main means through which God brings about spiritual growth and life transformation (Romans 12:1-2). The academic subjects are taught from a biblical worldview perspective as the truth of God reflected in his Word and his world (creation). The teaching of academic subjects as truth results in our sanctification. John 17:17 "Sanctify them through your truth. Your word is truth." Our logic here is that the creation was formed by the spoken word of God. As we study creation (the academics) we learn more of the truth of God and it is this understanding of God's created truth which in turn further sanctifies us. is a ministry of Emmanuel Baptist Church. The school was founded in Demographic Data Student Enrollment K-5: : : 122 Homeschool: 12 Total: 363 Our student demographics displays a range of diversity consisting of white, black, Asian and Hispanic population. American Diversity White non-latino (%) 62% African American 25% Asian American 4% Latino 1% Other 8% There is a range of diversity among the financial means of family too. Family household income would be designated from poverty level and low income to over six figure incomes. Based on a best guess estimate, the majority of families have a household income similar to the Toledo Metropolitan area. This estimate considers the number of families who receive tuition assistance from Emmanuel and the number of families which participate in the EdChoice program. We estimate that the number of families with household incomes over $100,000 would be less than 10%. Approximately 80 different churches are represented by our student population. As expected, Emmanuel Baptist Church has the highest percentage at nearly 30%. 3 or 4 larger area churches represent the next highest percentages. After that the percentages decline swiftly. Page 2
5 Our faculty and staff, with only one or two exceptions, is composed of a white population though we are desire to incorporate more racial diversity. About 50% of faculty are in their mid-40's to mid-50's. Nearly 10% of the faculty are Emmanuel graduates. 38% of our faculty have post-graduate degrees. Student/Teacher Ratio 1:12 Average Class size 20 students Toledo Metropolitan Area Demographic Data ECS is located in the northwest corner of the City of Toledo, Ohio. Geographically Toledo is located at the intersection of the Maumee River and the western end of Lake Erie. Toledo is primarily a blue collar town with more white collar work in the surrounding suburbs. Toledo is a mid-size American city with big city features. Toledo and the surrounding area boasts of professional baseball and hockey teams, symphony orchestra and youth orchestra, ballet, museums, beautiful metro parks and large nature preserves. Community at large: Northwest Ohio's concentration of population represents a significant market labor pool. With a population of over 650,000 in the Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA - Fulton, Lucas and Wood counties), the city of Toledo has a population of 287,208 (2010 census) and a population of over one million within the 17-county Northwest Ohio region, area businesses can draw from a well-trained and available workforce. Major industries would be automotive and medical related. The Toledo area has an abundance of strong, protestant Christian churches. Additionally, there is a strong Christian media influence; 3 Christian radio stations, a Christian newspaper and a 24/7 Christian TV station. This media willingly partners with churches and other Christian ministries. Toledo Metropolitan Area Demographic Data - Concluded As the new Superintendent of, one year under my belt, I see the greatest immediate challenge is that of affordability. Until this year ( ) ECS has averaged 10 years of declining enrollment; a decline of about 10 students per year. In Emmanuel's enrollment was 479. However, 20 students of the 479 were K4 students. Emmanuel no longer has a K4 program. Over 50% of the Toledo area population has a household income of less than $50, % of the population has a household income of $75,000 or less. To expect parents or even a single parent of two school age children to pay full tuition of $10,000+ is unreasonable in our economic demographic. At the moment, Emmanuel has the ability to offer generous tuition assistance (funded and unfunded) to help families. This is a major reason why enrollment has held steady this year. A longer term challenge is to increase all types of standardized test scores. Across the grades Emmanuel's scores fluctuate near the state averages. Emmanuel's average grade level Terra Nova results are below the National ACSI average Terra Nova results. Page 4

Describe how the school embodies its purpose through its program offerings and expectations for students. Emmanuel's vision statement: Making disciples of Jesus Christ. Emmanuel's mission statement: The mission of is to assist the Christian family by providing students with Godly, loving, training that disciples them to exemplify Christ, make Biblically-based decisions, and attain academic excellence. Our Goal The goal of an Emmanuel Christian education is to develop the ability to see all areas of life from a Christian world-and-life view. Our desire at ECS is to assist Christian young people to acquire an internal moral code of behavior based upon the Bible, which is our sole and final authority for faith and practice, and to develop a Christian life in society. All areas of curriculum should be consistent with the inerrant Word of God and will be designed to train the whole child. Emmanuel embodies it vision, mission and goal in every aspect of it programs. At the foundation of our discipleship program is our faculty who are trained in how to disciple students. As teachers they know how to model and integrate biblical truth along with training in the practical application of it. The written curriculum integrates biblical truth in all academics subjects. In fact, biblical truth is the foundation out of which each academic discipline originates. Daily Bible class is a required course for each student along with weekly chapels. Extracurricular programs such as athletics, student council, clubs all disciple students in biblical character qualities. Evidences for this would be in observation of our daily operations and published materials such as promotional literature, website, schedules and handbooks. Page 5
