4 V O L U M E 1, I S S U E 2 4 P A G E 4 The YES! Program YES![Youth Empowerment Seminar] is a stress reduction, violence prevention, and conflict resolution program which is part of the IAHV s campaign for a Violence Free, Stress Free Society. Last year over 3500 high school students were taught- primarily inner city public schools where stress and violence are highly imminent issues. STRESS is replaced with EMPOWERMENT, ENTHUSIASM, and a sense of BELONGINGNESS to the people in my own community and the world. The YES! for Schools Training is an opportunity for people who want to be a part of making a positive impact in the lives of high school students; to be a role model for a young person; to make a difference in your own life by helping young people realize their potential; to uplift society by uplifting our future. During this two-week training, attendees will learn techniques to focus, become more efficient, and reduce stress overall for his/her own life, through yoga, mediation, and breathing techniques, as well as get instruction of how to teach YES! to high school students. Following the training there will be opportunities for apprenticing with experienced YES! Teachers throughout the summer. Opportunities to apprentice and teach YES! through the Academic year will also be available. DATES: Training: June 20 July Fieldwork: July 4th thru Aug 10th 2010 [2-5 week options] LOCATION: Training: San Francisco Bay Area, CaliforniaFieldwork: SF Bay Area, CA; New York, NY; Chicago, IL yes4schools.wordpress.com LGBT Updates and Events En El Fuego: Film Screening & Discussion Wednesday, April 7 7 PM 8:30 PM Stauffer Lecture Hall (SLH) 102 event.php?eid= Transphobia is an everyday problem around the world and in a religious and conservative city like Lima, Peru, where transgender citizens are not protected by any specific laws it can be downright dangerous! 5 P A G E 5 La Mission Film premieres April 9th Set in the Mission District of San Francisco, the film focuses on Che, a deeply devoted father who controls his world through violence and intimidation, and his son, Jesse, who is struggling to fully manifest himself and his sexuality. The filmmakers, Peter & Benjamin Bratt, describe "La Mission" as a love letter to the neighborhood and community that continues to inspire them. As the Bratt brothers state, "La Mission doesn't pull any punches. It takes a hard look at attitudes that still thrive and do damage within our communities." But at the same time, it reflects back the pride, humor and love that has enabled generations of us to endure and grow. Opening weekend attendance is critical. The box office totals determine the life expectancy of the film, including its afterlife on DVD. If you, as we do, want to see more films that are authentically representative of our experiences and our communities, we urge you to support independent filmmaking by showing up at the theaters and buying tickets. It's the only message exhibitors understand--they only run films that will bring in large crowds. The film opens in LA & NY Friday, April 9th and the SF/Bay Area April 16th. For more information, tickets and showtimes, visit: Important Hispanic Scholarship Fund Message! If you are a current or former recipient of the Hispanic Scholarship Fund Scholarship or a Gates Millenium Scholar please contact us AS SOON AS POSSIBLE because we the SCholar Chapter need to know who you are.
