1 Repertory. n Protocol. n Date 12 April 2011 Title I Class 2 UOR AG POLITECNICO DI MILANO THE CHANCELLOR CONSIDERING the Presidential Decree dated 7/11/1980 No 382 "Reorganization of University Teaching concerning courses of study as well as organizational and learning experimentation ", and successive modifications;; CONSIDERING Law , n. 168 the institution of the Ministry of University and Scientific Research and Technology, and successive modifications; CONSIDERING Law , n. 398 sets forth Rules concerning university scholarships, and subsequent amendments and additions CONSIDERING Law , n. 210 sets forth Rules for the recruitment of researchers and university professors, and in particular Art. 4 dedicated to research doctorates (PhD), and successive modifications; CONSIDERING the Decree of the Ministry of University, Scientific Research and Technology , n. 224 with which the Regulation on doctoral research, implementing the above-mentioned Law 210/1998 was issued; CONSIDERING the current Statute of the Politecnico di Milano, CONSIDERING the current General Regulations of the University; CONSIDERING the Rules for the Administration, Finance and Accounting of Politecnico di Milano; Considering the Chancellor s Decree No 25/AD/ID, which have defined the "Guidelines for synergies between second cycle specialist laureas (BAs) and Research Doctorates; Considering the Chancellor s Decree. No 80/AG dated with which the Regulation of Politecnico di Milano in the governing Research Doctorate matters was issued; HAVING OBTAINED the favourable opinions expressed by the Academic Senate and the Board of Trustees, in their respective sittings of 31 and 29 March 2011, regarding the proposed partial modifications to the Articles. 8, 10 and 12 of the Rules of the Politecnico di Milano in the matter of Research Doctorates; ACKNOWLEDGES the need to comply; DECREES For the motivations expressed in the preamble, Articles. 8, 10 and 12 of the Rules of the Politecnico di Milano in the matter of Research Doctorates, Chancellor s Decree No 80/AG dated 28/07/2006, are partially modified as indicated in the text, an integral part of the present provision. The modification have been marked in bold. Art. 1 Field of Application 1. This statute governs the general criteria for the activation and functioning of the Research Doctorates of Politecnico di Milano in accordance with the provisions of art. Law 4 of , n. 210 and the related ministerial regulations, adopted by DM No 224 of and subsequent modifications and amendments, as well as the purpose, organization and functioning of the coordination structure established for the purpose foreseen by the University s General Statute

2 Art. 2 Educational Objectives of the Doctorate Course 1. The Research Doctorate of Politecnico di Milano are aimed at the acquisition of the necessary skills for carrying out high quality research activities in industrial and service businesses, public entities, universities and private research entities. Art. 3 Didactic Organization and Educational Contents of the Doctorate Courses 1. Politecnico di Milano s Research Doctorate (Ph.D) has a duration of three years, divided into 180 credits ECTS, including periods of study abroad and internships in public and private subjects. The duration of the course will be able to be increased in the framework of special initiatives or in case of international inter-university cooperation agreements. In any case at least 18 months of educational activity must be carried out at the Politecnico di Milano. 2. The programs and related credits are organized according to the following four educational areas: a) preparatory educational: courses and seminars aimed at providing preparatory knowledge for preliminary study of scientific themes and theories addressed in the Doctorate program; b) basic education for research: courses and seminars that examine the basic themes of research (problems, theories and methods) of research in the reference scientific disciplines of the Research Doctorate Program; c) specialist research training: activities, workshops and specialized courses of study of some specific topics; d) the development of PhD dissertation: activities aimed at generating new knowledge of high scientific expertise on topics relevant to social, cultural, industrial and economic development. At least 40 credits must be reserved for structured activities in the educational areas a), b), c) and at least 60 credits for area d). as part of the training referred to in paragraphs a), b) and c) some courses may be drawn from the offering of specialist Laurea degrees. The possibility of attending courses offered outside of the university is also foreseen, as are periods of time in internships, study abroad and taking advantage of the courses promoted by the Doctorate School and other doctorate programs of the university 3. The Scientific Board of each Doctoral Program determines training program, attributes the credits on the four areas of training mentioned in Paragraph 2 of the present article and establishes the cultural activities for each Doctorate Program, giving advance publicising in order to ensure the most extensive discussion possible within the scientific community. Art. 4 Didactical, Administrative and Coordination Bodies 1. The request for the activation or renewal of a Research Doctorate Program course can be made to the Academic Senate, by a Department or a set of Departments of Politecnico di Milano. In the case of interdepartmental requests the Departments shall agree upon the management modality. The program does however refer to a department which coordinates and supervises its administration accounting. A Department may activate several Research Doctorate Programs provided they are in compliance with the requirements on the minimum number of scholarships imposed by the Senate. 2. The proposing Department (or Departments) shall appoint the Scientific Board, which elects a Coordinator among associate and tenured professors of Politecnico di Milano. The Coordinator shall hold office for a threeyear period from the beginning of a cycle and can be re-elected for another three-year period once. The Coordinator may be an untenured professor. In the event of a possible alternating year, the Coordinator shall, in accordance with the Scientific Board, appoint a replacement 3. The Scientific Board is responsible for the educational program and didactic and administrative activities relating to the Research Doctorate Program as well as communication activities. 4. Those professors, who do not, without justification, attend two of the meetings of the Scientific Board during the year, forfeit their mandate and shall not be re-appointed the following year. 5. The Academic Senate shall distribute University scholarships to the Departments (as specified in the following Article 6, paragraph 6), it shall resolve the activation and renewal of Research Doctorate Programs, conventions, and collaborations with private and public entities both Italian and foreign, and other Italian universities, as well as allow the participation of Politecnico di Milano in Research Doctorate Programmes in the Convention, administered by other universities 6. The Doctorate School of Politecnico di Milano, foreseen by Article. III.4 of the General Statute of the University has the duty of consultative support to the Senate in the certification of the quality of the Doctorate Program and in the stipulation of agreements, coordinates the various Research Doctorate programs and serves 2

3 as liaison with the Faculty. It organizes and manages the centralized program as regards the Research Doctorate Program. 7. The Board of Trustees of the Politecnico di Milano deliberates on the overall assignment of resources as well as on matters as per Art. 10. Art. 5 Organization and Functioning of the Doctorate School 1. The bodies of the Doctorate School of Politecnico di Milano are: the Director of the School, the Management Board (briefly named the Management), the School Council and the Reference Committee. 2. The Director is a full time tenured professor of Politecnico di Milano, elected by the Coordinators of the Research Doctorate. He shall: a) Publically represent the school and in its dealings with other bodies of the University (Chancellor, Academic Senate, Didactics Oversight Body, of which he is a member, Board of Directors etc.). b) convene and preside over the Management, Board and the Reference Committee; c) promote the policy of the quality and certification of the doctorate programs, also taking advantage of the Reference Committee and external auditors d) handle communications; e) organize and administer the centralized activities; f) The Director can select delegates within the Management, who shall personally manage the specific tasks set forth above or instruct, for the Management, practices of a collective nature. The Directors can identify a Vice-Director who shall represent him in his absence; g) The Director may neither be a Coordinator of a Research Doctorate Program nor an Academic Dean nor President of the Study Program Board. Should any of these be elected he shall only be able to accept this office by resigning from his own office. 3. The Management is.made up of the Director, four tenured professors of Polytechnic of Milan and the head of the administrative offices of the Doctorate Service. The Director and the four professors shall hold office for three years and may be re-elected one single time for a second consecutive mandate. The four professors shall be elected among the Coordinators of the Research Doctorate programs by the coordinators themselves. The head of the administrative offices of the Doctorate Research Service shall participate in the Management in the quality of member without voting rights with secretary functions. The Management has the following collective tasks: a) operationally supports the Academic Senate for the stipulation of agreements with third parties with external subjects and in the framework of international cooperation agreements, upon approval by the Board of the School in the case of conventions and agreements of general interest; b) manages the schedule of the Doctorate program s courses (activations, announcements, entrance exams, passing the year, final exams, opening ceremonies and the awarding of degree; c) coordinates and promotes interdisciplinary initiatives among Doctorate programs, on the Board s proposal; d) operationally manages services to doctorate students and cross-sector and multi-disciplinary training; e) oversees the link between Research Doctorate departments and the Faculty on the Board s delegation; f) is activated for fund raising at a centralized level; g) offers support to Doctorate Programs for the preparation of national and international projects related to the Doctorate programs; h) manages and proposes revision and updating of the present Statute, and after having heard the binding opinion of the Board. 4. The School Board is composed of members of the Management, the Coordinators of the Doctorate Program, by a representative of the Deans, a representative of the Board of Directors, by a delegate of the Chancellor and four representatives of doctoral students. The representatives shall remain in office for long as they maintain their status of research doctorate students and in any case not more than three years. The active and passive electorate is constituted by doctorate program students of Politecnico di Milano. The election of the representatives of the doctoral students is called by the Chancellor. The Board has the following tasks: a) acts as a proactive, advisory and informational link between the School and the Departments; b) acts as a proactive, advisory and informational link between the School and the Scientific Board of the Research Doctoral programs; c) acts as a proactive, advisory and informational link between the School and Research Doctorate students; Proposes the modalities the management of the resources for scholarships and for the operation of the Research Doctorate Programs to the Senate, as set forth in the following Art.6, Paragraph 6; d) proposes and approved the modalities of the coordination of training activities and other interdisciplinary initiatives among the various Research Doctorates; e) Proposes and approves the modalities of coordination of the educational activities between Research Doctorates and Faculty, delegating the management to the operational aspects. 3

The Reference Committee, an advisory body of the Research Doctorate School, is made up of qualified persons from the social, industrial, economic, cultural and academic sectors outside of Politecnico di Milano, who have been chosen to carry out the following tasks: a) support the management in understanding the demand for researchers by the non-academic world and in the defining Doctorate Programs; b) propose initiatives to support the Doctorate School; acts as a linking element between the school and the national and international external context. Committee members are appointed by the Chancellor of reference upon the resolution of the Senate, following a proposal from the Directorate of the Doctorate School. The Reference Committee shall be renewed or re-confirmed every three years. The number participants not being defined a priori, new members may be added during the three years.. Art. 6 Activation and Renewal of Doctoral Programs 1. The Doctorate Programs are established or renewed by decree of the Chancellor on the proposal of the Department Board, upon the deliberation by the Academic Senate, after hearing the opinion of the Evaluation Unit and the Doctorate School of Politecnico di Milano. 2. The Doctorate courses may be established in agreement with other Italian or foreign universities or with public and private entities possessing high cultural and scientific quality qualifications, as well as suitable personnel, structures and equipment These agreements can be activated whenever there is a need to access to complementary resources which are not present at the Politecnico di Milano within the framework of strategies for scientific collaboration defined by the University. 3. For Research Doctorate programs whose administrative headquarters are based at the Politecnico di Milano in agreement with other universities or private and public entities, observance is requested, in addition to the availability of human, structural, and financial resources, by the concerned parties, of the provisions of this University concerning Doctorate Program matters. 4. In the case of agreements or arrangements with small and medium enterprises, small businesses, other undertakings referred to in Article 2195 of the Civil Code, subjects referred to in Article 17 of Law 05/10/1991, n. 317, the program of studies may be agreed between the Politecnico di Milano and the aforesaid subjects regarding the granting of facilities referred to in Article 5 of Law , n. 449, and successive modifications and amendments. 5. The new Research Doctorate Programs are only activated in the presence of a commitment of the Department (or Departments) to keep the Program active for at least three consecutive cycles with a commitment of at least nine scholarships for the three cycles. 6. The scholarships shall be granted by the University Senate upon the proposal of the School Board, based on the indicators adopted by the Senate itself. 7. The Departments shall propose activation or renewal of Research Doctorate Program, indicating the number of University scholarships (including partial) assigned to each program activated and possible necessary rounding and / or additional scholarships financed from departmental funds. 8. Additional theme based for departmental funded scholarships shall be added until the day preceding the subject exam. Art. 7 Suitability Requirements 1. The Doctorate Programs courses are proposed on the basis of the suitability requirements: a) The number of admissions to each Doctorate program shall not be less than three; b) scientific topics and their related denominations are sufficiently broad and with reference to the contents of a scientific-disciplinary sector or one aggregation of more sectors; c) presence in the Scientific Board of Teaching of an appropriate number of professors and researchers from scientific disciplinary sectors areas related to the Doctorate Program and in any case in a number greater than or equal to 10, the absolute majority of the members of the Scientific Board should be made up of Polytechnic of Milan professors; d) availability of adequate financial resources and specific scientific and operational structures for the Program and for study activities and research of the Doctorate students in particular, in observance of the restriction set out in Art 6, Paragraph 5;; 4

5 e) the presence of a Coordinator responsible for the organization of the Program, a Scientific Board and tutors in proportion to the number of doctorate students and with documented scientific production over the last five-year period in the reference area of the Program; f) the possibility of documented collaboration with public and private subjects, Italian or foreign, that allow Doctoral Students to conduct experiments in a professional context, in particular, the presence of the individual program Reference Committee composed of individuals who were qualified from the reference social, economic and cultural context; g) presence of educational training programs oriented to high quality research activities in private subjects, public entities and Universities, and stimulate carrying out study periods abroad; h) promotion of internationalization; i) organization of seminars for the public dissemination of the Doctorate Research results; j) periodical meetings with the Reference Committee of the individual Research Doctorate Program. 2. The evaluation of requirements, as per the present article, with reference to the program s compliance with the educational objectives set forth in Art. 2, even in relation to the professional opportunities and the level of education of Doctorate students, is carried out by the internal Evaluation Unit together with the Doctoral School at the time of the establishment of the PhD program, and with periodic intervals set by the governing bodies of ' University. Art. 8 Requirements for Admittance to the Program 1. Everyone may enter the Research Doctorate Program regardless of age and nationality, who possess an 5-year Laurea (Bachelor s Degree) (laurea order existing prior to the Ministerial Decree 509/99), a specialist or master s degree or equivalent qualification obtained abroad recognized in advance by the Scientific Board of the Doctorate Program concerned, also in the framework inter-university cooperation and mobility agreements. 2. Agreements with Foreign Institutions. Politecnico di Milano, upon the resolution of the Academic Senate, may enter into agreements with Universities and / or foreign bodies aimed at the establishment of doctoral programs that also provide for the issuing of joint, double or multiple degrees. Agreements and Program instituting international doctorates, establishes among other things:: - The duration of the Doctorate Program courses; - The tuition fees to be borne by doctorate students; - The selection procedures, which can be carried out by international panels and/or by the European Union bodies in the framework under competitive funding procedures, which expressly foresee the enrolment of the winners into the Research Doctorate program; - The composition of the Examination Board and the final examination. The candidates, who have passed the selection tests foreseen in the present article, shall be admitted to by right to the doctoral program. 3. Transfers from other Universities The Doctorate Students, who have attended a Research Doctorate for at least one year at another university, may apply for enrolment in the Doctorate Program at the University under the following conditions: - That among the PhD programs at the University there is a doctoral degree with related research and educational objectives; - That the Doctoral students documents, that courses and activities followed at the University of origin and that these activities and/or courses are recognized by the Scientific Board as equivalent to those required for PhD program enrolment at Politecnico di Milano; - That the doctorate student positively passes an evaluation carried out by the Scientific Board; In the event that the transfer request is approved, the student concerned shall not in any case be awarded a scholarship to be borne by the University budget. 4. Visiting Ph.Ds. PhD students coming from another university (Italian or foreigner) who spend a period of research which is longer than a month at Politecnico di Milano and not included in the agreements as per Paragraph 1) of the present Article, shall at the request of a University professor, receive the qualification of Visiting Ph.D.. I Visiting Ph.D.s are not enrolled in the Ph.D. program of the Politecnico di Milano and do not award the title of Doctor of Philosophy of the University. 5

6 The same shall be issued recognition badge for access to general research support services provided by the University, including access to library services, the Internet network, computer labs, and will also be guaranteed basic insurance coverage Art. 9 Entry Competition 1. The notice of the competition for admission to Research Doctorate Program are issued by the Chancellor of Politecnico di Milano, who arranges for its advertising, including publication in the Official Gazette of the Italian Republic, and forwarded to the Ministry of Education, ' University and Research for the national divulgation through Information Technology means. 2. The competition indicates: a) The Research Doctorate Programs activated, with the indication of the educational program which are examined in depth (if the program foresees specific internal curricula) and the other persons involved (in the case of doctorate candidates covered by convention); b) the total number of students to be admitted to each PhD program; c) the number and amount of scholarships for each PhD program; d) the taxes and fees borne by the students and the discipline of exemptions, as determined by the Board of Trustees; e) the application submission term and modality; f) the general and specific subjective qualifications required; g) the procedures for carrying out admissions tests; h) the criteria for appointment by the Examination Board; i) the modalities of communication to the candidates of the schedule and sites of the examinations; j) and modalities for the enrolment in the Programs; b) the modalities for the awarding of the title of Doctor of Research. 3. In the case of Doctoral Programs established as a result of international inter-university cooperation agreements the admission modalities and makeup of the Commission for the entry examination shall be determined as provided for in the agreement. Art. 10 Administration Tests and Determination of the Doctorate Positions 1. The Chancellor, having heard the Scientific Board, shall appoint with its own decree of the Commissions entrusted with the comparative evaluation of the candidates, consisting of three effective members and three alternates, chosen from among tenured professors and university researchers, to which can be added at most two experts, including foreigners, chosen from the institutions and public and private sector research and the appointment of such experts is mandatory whenever the conditions referred to in paragraph 3 of art. 4 of Ministerial Decree 224/99 arise. Professors and experts who have served on the Admissions Commission to the same Doctorate Program in the previous cycle cannot be appointed members of a commission. 2. The candidates, who are regularly enrolled in the admission competition, are admitted to the Doctorate Program upon a comparative evaluation of suitability by the responsible Examination Board. The evaluation of suitability for admission to the PhD program focuses on examining the quality of the candidate and his predisposition to scientific research in the areas of such a Doctorate. The suitability criteria are defined with the activation of the cycles and included in the competition notices as stated in the previous Art. 9.I 3. The documents of the Commission must be ensured adequate publicity. 4. The scholarships are awarded following a comparative evaluation of merit and in accordance with the ranking defined in the list. In the case of equal merits, the evaluation of the economic condition as established pursuant to the Prime Ministerial Decree dated , published in the Official Gazette No. 116, , shall prevail.. 5. In case of renunciations or if, during the course, a scholarship holder abandons his studies, the scholarship, in its total or residual amount, is bestowed upon the first candidate or candidate and doctorate student of the same cycle, without a scholarship, according to his relative ranking, taking into account possible suitability for theme-oriented scholarships.. 6. The amount of scholarship cannot be less than that set forth in Art 1, Paragraph 1, letter a) of Law 3.8/1998, n. 315, and successive modifications and as amendments 7. The amount of the scholarship shall be increased to the extent not less than 50% for possible period of study abroad authorized by the Doctorate School. This increase shall not be paid out for more than 18 months.. 6

The scholarships shall not be combined with other scholarships awarded for any purpose other except those awarded by national or foreign institutions which are useful in integrating training or research activities which scholarship fellows with trips abroad.. 9. The Board of Trustees of the Politecnico di Milano defines the rules governing fees and tuition for admission, the frequency of Research Doctorate Programs and the awarding of the title courses and graduation. Upon the proposal of the Doctorate School, these fees and tuition can differ among the Doctorate Programs in accordance with the types of educational and didactic services offered Art. 11 Awarding of the Title of Doctor of Research 1. The title of Doctor of Research shall be awarded when upon the passing of the final examination, which may be repeated once. The doctoral dissertation can be written in a foreign language, upon the authorization of Scientific Board. 2. For well demonstrated reasons which do not allow the dissertation to be presented within the foreseen time limits, the Chancellor on the proposal of the Scientific Board, after consultation with the Doctorate School may admit the candidate to the final examination in an exception to the established times and in the case of failure of the Program to be activated, also in other sittings. 3. The Chancellor, in consultation with the Scientific Board, appoints by his own decree of the Examination Board responsible for the final evaluation for the degree, made up of three effective members and three alternates selected from among the tenured professors and university researchers, who are especially qualified in the disciplines associated with scientific areas examined in the Doctorate Program. At least two members must belong to the university, including foreigner, not participating in the Doctorate Program, and should not be members of the Scientific Board or the supervisors of the dissertations being discussed. The Board may integrated by no more than two experts, belonging to public and private research facilities, including foreign ones. No professors and experts who had been members of the Examination Board for the same Doctorate in the previous cycle can be named members of the Scientific Board. 4. The aforesaid boards shall ensure the conclusion of operations within 90 days following the date of the Chancellors appointment decree. Following that date, the Board which has not completed its work lapses and the Rector shall appoint a new Board with the exception of the lapsed members. 5. The title is awarded by the Chancellor of the Politecnico di Milano. Following the awarding of the title, Politecnico di Milano shall arrange to send a copy of each doctorate dissertation to the National Libraries of Rome and Florence. Politecnico di Milano s Doctorate School of research shall grant to doctors who have passed the educational program meeting the requirements set forth in the acts of the 45th Congress of the Confederation of Chancellors of European Universities in November 1991, the additional title of European Doctor. 6. The Scientific Board of the Doctorate Program shall provide to promote the divulgation of the results of the dissertations, organizing a public seminar at the end of the training process in which the Research Doctors illustrate the results to protagonists in the scientific, economic and social fields. 7. International inter-university cooperation agreements can foresee specific procedures for awarding the title Art. 12 Obligations and Rights of Doctoral Students 1. Doctorate students have the right to use university services foreseen for university students enrolled in Politecnico di Milano study programs as well as the infrastructure and services needed for the carrying out the educational process of the Doctorate Program. 2. The students enrolled in the Doctorate Programs are required to constantly attend the courses and carry out study and research activities within the framework of structures designated for such a purpose in accordance with procedures established by the Scientific Board. 3. At the beginning of the Program, the Scientific Board shall appoint a supervisor for every student, with his consent, who supervises and supports the student in the same overall educational pathway, with particular reference to specific training activities which developed by the student, and reports annually to the Scientific Board for the formulation of the opinion of passage to the next year. The supervisor is a Politecnico di Milano professor belonging to the Scientific Board. The supervisor may be a professor from another university (on the condition that he is a member of the Scientific Board) in the case of a Doctorate in convention with other Universities. 4. The Scientific Board shall agree the research project to be developed as a dissertation topic, in the respect of possible conventions and agreements stipulated with external financing entities, especially in the case in which the student makes use of a scholarship to study a specific research topic. 7

8 5. The Scientific Board shall appoint, with the consent of the student, a supervisor of the dissertation that supports the doctorate student in the formulation and in the daily activities of developing of the dissertation. It can be that the supervisor is not even be a member of the Scientific Board nor is a member of Politecnico di Milano. In any case, the supervisor is responsible vis-à-vis the Scientific Board for the progress of the doctorate student s work and dissertation, and pledges to observe the indications of the Scientific Board and the PhD training program.. Conditions for obtaining the Doctor Europaeus certification: In implementing the European Convention relating to the certification of "Doctor Europaeus", defined by the European University Association, this certification is issued by the University, at the request of the student and the favourable opinion of the professors, when the following conditions are met:: - The doctoral dissertation is the result of a research period of at least three months in one or more states which are members of the European Convention; - The doctoral student presents a favourable report, drawn up by at least two professors from universities established in the States which are members of the European Convention in question; - The Board's final exam includes at least one member of a university institution of a State which adheres to the aforesaid Convention, other than that of the dissertation; - The discussion of the dissertation shall be performed in Italian and in a second European language At the act of registration, the doctorate student is assigned an address. Doctorate students undertake to regularly consult the mail received at that address which represents the official channel for the dissemination of information by the Doctorate School and the Research Doctorate Service. 7. At the beginning of each academic year the doctoral student must submit a regular enrolment application and arrange for the possible payment of tuition and fees. On this occasion, the student must complete the questionnaires for the evaluation of Doctorate programs and data collection for the project to promote and enhance the figure of Research Doctor 8. At the end of each year of the Doctorate program, the student must submit a detailed report on the educational and research activities carried out to the Scientific Board which, upon a evaluation of the attendance of courses and educational activities, commitment and profit, deliberates the passage to the following academic year or final exam, depending on whether first, second or third year doctoral students are involved. A possible negative evaluation by the Scientific Board entails the repetition of the year, with the suspension of the scholarship, if granted, and the payment of fees and tuition, even in the case completed in Paragraph 2 of Art. 10, or the exclusion from the Doctorate Program, with loss of the scholarship, when granted. The possibility of repeating a year in order to allow for the completion of the educational program, may also be conceded to the doctorate student who has not completed the educational activities planned for the year in progress with the same implications as regards the suspension of the scholarship and the payment of tuition. For each program year of the course repetition is permitted only once. 9. Doctoral students can undertake training periods or internships in companies as well as public and private entities, other universities, research institutes, centres and laboratories, Italian and foreign. Training periods abroad are particularly encouraged. For training periods abroad of a duration falling between ten days and three months, the written consent of the Doctorate Coordinator and supervisor is required, for longer training periods abroad a deliberation of the Scientific Board is required. 10. In consideration of the fact that the ability to explain and transfer knowledge is an essential part of the training of researchers, doctorate students, with the approval of the Scientific Board, may carry out a limited teaching assistance or testing activities. Subsidiary or supplementary teaching should not in any way compromise the research training activities. Didactic collaboration is voluntary, without any burden to the State budget and does not give rise to any rights regarding access to university professorships of universities. 11. The doctorate student who is found to be in a position of having to stop attendance for a period exceeding 30 days, up to a maximum of one year, for maternity, military service, serious and documented illness, may obtain the suspension of attendance based on the documentation produced and the resolution of the Scientific Board. Rights to possible scholarships which they enjoy shall be retained with the interruption of the grant later being restored once attendance started once again. Suspension for the maternity leave can be requested by the concerned student starting from two months before the expected due date and three months after that, starting from the month before the expected date of childbirth and for the following four months, as stated in the provisions of Articles. 16 and 20 of Legislative Decree no. 151/2001 and subsequent modifications and amendments. Suspension for maternity leave may be arranged by the University Scientific Board office, after having consulted with the Director of the Department concerned, with the decision motivated by protection of the health of the mother or child. The suspension for paternity may be requested by the doctorate student in case of death or serious illness of the mother of the child or abandonment as well as in the case of sole custody 8

9 of the child awarded to the father, for the entire duration of maternity leave or the residual portion which the mother shall enjoy, pursuant to Article. 28 of Legislative Decree 151/2001 and subsequent modifications and amendments. 12. In case of withdrawal from the doctorate program, the person concerned is obliged to notify the Chancellor and the Doctorate Coordinator, and as of that date the provision of any scholarship will be interrupted. 13. The doctoral student who has obtained the enrolment in one year of the Doctorate Program shall have no right to the restitution of the fees and tuition paid. 14. Public employees who are admitted to research doctoral programs, who do not have any scholarship and who are placed on leave, shall maintain their pay, social security and pension benefits in the public administration with which they have established their work relationship. 15. Students who have scholarships awarded by the Politecnico di Milano are exempt from fees and tuition for access to and attendance of courses, these scholarships being funds which are allocated pursuant to decrees of the Minister of which Article 4, Paragraph 3 of Law No 210, governing University funds, or funds granted by public and private entities. 16. Also, as provided by Art. 8 of the Decree of the Prime Ministers dated 09/04/2001, recipients of scholarships awarded by regions and autonomous provinces, and foreign students who are recipients of scholarships from the Italian Government, in the framework of development cooperation programs and intergovernmental agreements on cultural and scientific and related periodical executive programs shall be exempted from the payment of university fees and tuition. Art. 13 Transitory and Final and Repealing Dispositions 1. The Statute governing the Matters on Doctoral Research enter into force upon the date of the issuing of the present provision. 2.
