Students who are beyond the age of compulsory school attendance age and who do not have a high school diploma, GED, or evidence of having been home schooled up to high-school completion level must pass the Wonderlic exam in order to be admitted. This test is provided by a third party. These students are not eligible for Title IV federal financial aid. We accept foreign applicants from countries that do not have diplomatic agreements with the U.S. and cannot provide copies of a high school diploma, as long as they certify, through a document notarized by a notary certified under the laws of the United States, that they have completed the level of education equivalent to our admissions requirements. 4. Pay the non-refundable registration fee. 5. If the applicant is 18 years of age, does not have a high school diploma, and has passed the Wonderlic test, the signature of the applicant s parent or legal guardian is required. ABILITY TO BENEFIT (ATB) ALTERNATIVE: Students who choose this alternative are not eligible for Title IV funds (Pell, SEOG, Work-Study) unless they had received Title IV funds prior to July 1, The applicant will be scheduled to take the Wonderlic test, which will be administered and assessed by a person qualified according to the standards of the test publisher, who works independently of the institution in accordance with federal requirements. This person will issue a graded answer sheet and an original certification for the school. The test administrator must sign and date all tests administered and corrected by him / her. The applicant will immediately be informed of the test results. If the student passes the exam, the student will be admitted according to the admissions policy. Nouvelle Institute has established that, according to regulations established by the U.S. Department of Education, all students must have passed the Wonderlic test with a score of 200/verbal and 210/quantitative for students who take the test in English, and 15 points for students who take the test in Spanish. In case an applicant should need to retake the exam, this will occur under the rules of the test publisher. FACULTY CREDENTIALS All instructors at Nouvelle Institute are certified by the Cosmetology Board of Florida. Each professor receives 12 hours of continued education annually in teaching methods, and they also participate frequently in professional improvement seminars in topics related to the programs they teach. GRADING SYSTEM The school bases its grades on the results of written and practical examinations. The student s professionalism and conduct are also taken into account. The following is the academic value system the school uses for grading: Excellent 100% - 90% ''A'' 4 points Good 89% - 80% ''B'' 3 points Passing 79% - 75% ''C'' 2 points Failing 74% - 0% F'' 0 points Students are given the opportunity to retake failed exams to improve their grades (requires instructor's approval). Periodic examinations, lectures (theory), and practice are part of the school's academic procedures. Academic level exams are required at end of each academic period. STUDENT RECORDS All credits earned, grades, and services are recorded and are available for the student's review. If a student is not accepted, or if the student cancels his/her enrollment, his/her file will be kept by the school for 1 year. Nouvelle Institute retains student records permanently. If the school should close, the students files will be surrendered to the Florida Commission for Independence Education. SATISFACTORY ACADEMIC PROGRESS POLICY Satisfactory academic progress is required by federal law (34CFR ). Satisfactory academic progress measures the completion of the program by a student in order to obtain a diploma or certification, in a specific, quantitative and qualitative manner. The Registrar s Office and the Financial Aid office must monitor each student s academic progress to determine if the student complies with the applicable federal and state regulations with regard to the administration of student financial assistance. Instructors will notify students to review their satisfactory progress evaluations. 6
8 Students who do not complete the classes in which they have enrolled or who do not reach the minimum standards necessary to achieve the required grade point average may lose their eligibility to receive all types of federal and state financial aid, as well as institutional financial assistance. Satisfactory Academic Progress requires that the institution monitor the academic progress of all students enrolled full-time or part-time at the midpoint of their evaluation period or terms, and at the end of each evaluation period an evaluation is performed. Satisfactory progress is defined in terms of general average, credits accumulated (with their equivalencies in clock-hours), and the amount of time required to complete the program. Quantitative Measures The quantitative measure of the time invested in the training received is defined in credit-hours. One credit-hour is defined as 60 minutes of instruction. One credit is equivalent to 37.5 clock-hours. Nouvelle Institute define its academic periods as academic terms. Each program has up to a maximum of four academic terms, depending on the length of the program. Student progress is monitored at the midpoint of each term, and at the end of the term an evaluation is performed. To determine if the students has complied with the minimum average of attendance of 67% at the end of each academic term, the school calculates the cumulative amount of credit-hours (and their equivalents in clock-hours) successfully completed (with a grade of 75% or higher), divided by the accumulated number of credit-hours (with their equivalents in clock-hours) attempted by the student to date. (The satisfactory progress of students who do not receive Pell or Title IV financial aid is measured using credit-hours without equivalencies. The equivalencies of their accumulated credits are certified to the state for licensure exam purposes upon completion of the program.) Academic Progress Measurement The qualitative measure of academic progress is based on the grading scale. To obtain credit for the completed topics/units the student is required to obtain at least two points (based on a scale of four points). The conversion method to be used compared to another grading system is as follows: 4 points - A - 100%-90% = Excellent 3 points - B - 89% -80%= Good 2 points - C - 79% -75%= Average 0 points - F - 74% - 0%= Failing Measurement Table PROGRAM PROG. MAXIMUM TIME FRAME FOR COURSE COMPLETION The institution s academic policy requires that the student complete the course in one-and-a-half times (150%) the regular duration of the program. In the case of part-time students, a calculation is made based on their schedule and the amount of time required to complete the program. EVALUATION PERIOD The school will evaluate students based on credit-hours (with their clock-hour equivalents) and on the student s probability for completing the program in the maximum time allowed. The school will also evaluate the amount of credits accumulated in each academic term. In each of the academic terms the institution monitors academic progress at the midpoint of the term and at the end of the term an evaluation is performed. All students will be evaluated once they complete their program, to determine if the student is a candidate for graduation. This policy applies also to students who have transferred in. The monitoring and evaluation of transfer students will be done at the midpoint and end, respectively, of their academic term(s) at Nouvelle Institute. Students who meet satisfactory progress requirements are considered to be in compliance until the next evaluation according to their schedule of progress evaluations. 7
9 [GRADE POINT] AVERAGE To maintain satisfactory progress the student must maintain an average of two points on a four-point scale. Should the student not meet this requirement, the institution will apply the probation status if the student has been successful in his/her appeal after the warning period, or will terminate the student s enrollment. Students will be notified of any evaluation that impacts the student s eligibility for financial aid, as applicable. ATTENDANCE AND TARDINESS At Nouvelle Institute we believe that continued punctual attendance is necessary for students to acquire the knowledge and skills required by their program, and to develop the sense of responsibility and punctuality which they will later need for their performance at work and in their interactions with other people. Each instructor will confirm each student s daily attendance, and delivers it at the end of each credit (unit) to the Academic Director so it may be processed with its equivalencies in clock-hours for compliance with the clock-hour equivalencies required for the licensure exam and for federal financial aid disbursements. Every student who falls behind in his/her coursework, for whatever reason, will be responsible for getting up to date. To achieve this it is recommended that the student develop a study plan in coordination with his/her instructor. COURSE INTERRUPTIONS/ LEAVES OF ABSENCE Any student who for some extenuating circumstance may have to be absent from classes for a prolonged period of time will have to request a leave of absence. The leave(s) cannot exceed 120 calendar days, and will be allowed for the following reasons: health reasons; travel; work; maternity; child care; illness, death, or care of a close family member; having to wait for one or more units to start; or for any other meritorious reason. The student will return in the same status he/she had at the start of the interruption/leave, and their completion time will be extended for the same amount of time in the leave. If the student should not return on or prior to the date established in the leave, the school shall administratively withdraw the student, the refund policy will apply, and any corresponding refund will be made. Once the withdrawal has been processed, the student must request readmission before he or she can return to classes. The student will not lose the credits accumulated until the start of the interruption, as long as those credits will not repeat in his/her new class schedule, or as long as there has not been a curriculum change during the time the student was out of the institution. In that case the units that have changed will be evaluated, and the school will determine, according to their content and duration, if they can be credited to the student. If the units are credited the student shall receive a financial credit equal to the amount already paid. TRANSFER POLICY (CREDIT FOR PRIOR TRAINING) Nouvelle Institute will accept students transferring from other beauty schools. Interested students shall go through orientation to determine if they qualify based on our admissions requirements and rules. Credit will be awarded for units satisfactorily completed at the previous institution, and this will be recorded in the student s record as units attempted and passed, as long as such units have been completed with a grade of at least 75% (C), and as long as the previous institution is approved by the Florida Commission for Independent Education and/or an accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education that accredits beauty schools. No credit shall be given for units in cases when students have attended an institution where the units/topics are not compatible [with ours]. These students shall have to bring an official transcript, which will be evaluated by the Academic Director, who will determine, on the basis of the criteria mentioned, which units/topics will be credited. We will also request that the student provide a financial aid transcript, if the student plans to apply for federal financial aid at Nouvelle Institute. The student must complete at least 50% of the total credits in the program at Nouvelle Institute to receive a diploma/certificate from Nouvelle Institute. A program or programs credited from other institutions will be identified with a grade of %, and they shall be recorded in the student s satisfactory progress record as attempted and passed to determine the student s general grade point average. Incomplete: This classification refers to students who do not complete program requirements for valid reasons such as absences; they are given an Incomplete with a value of zero. This classification has no effect upon the qualitative and quantitative criteria of the satisfactory academic progress policy. Withdrawal: This status affects the percentage of credit hours attempted and passed. At Nouvelle Institute there are two types of withdrawals: Administrative Withdrawal: This status is awarded when an authorized institution official withdraws a student after the student has been absent for 14 consecutive days. The 14 days will start counting from the last day of attendance. Official Withdrawal: Status awarded when the student notifies an authorized school official, in person or by phone, that he or she will no longer attend classes. This notice should be given before the student has accumulated 14 consecutive absences. Repetitions: A classification of R will be given to the course that is being repeated; its value will be zero (0), and this will affect the percentage of credits attempted and passed. Once the course has been repeated the grade assigned is the one obtained after the repetition is completed. The cost of a repetition cannot be paid with Title IV federal student aid. Effective July 1, 2011 the satisfactory academic progress policy will include the following academic statuses: Warning Nouvelle Institute gives an academic warning to all students who do not meet the satisfactory progress requirements for the first time within one academic term. The institution establishes that if a student does not meet the requirements for the evaluation, the Academic Affairs Office, through its director, will place the student on Warning until the next progress evaluation. In this status the student shall continue to be eligible to receive financial aid, and will have to complete this period improving his/her academic deficiencies in order to comply with the requirements of the satisfactory academic progress policy. The Registrar s office will notify the financial aid office of the student s status using the appropriate form. The financial aid office in turn will advise the student about the consequences and the possible loss of financial aid if the student should not meet academic progress requirements at the end of the Warning period. If this were to happen the student will be placed on Probation. 8
10 Probation Once the student is placed on Probation by the Registrar s office, that office must immediately notify the financial aid office through the proper written form, since while in this status the student loses eligibility to receive financial aid. In this status the student has the right to appeal the decision of the Registrar. If the student s appeal is granted, financial aid may be reinstated during this period. (If the appeal is granted, the Registrar s office must notify the financial aid office via appropriate form so that financial aid may be reinstated.) Probation will last once whole academic period; for this period the Appeals Committee will design a study plan, which will be given to the student for approval, and through which the student may be able to meet satisfactory progress requirements. (Each academic plan will be designed individually according to the student s needs.) During the probation period the student will have to comply with the academic study plan in order to continue receiving financial aid. If at any time the student should stop complying with the terms of the study plan, financial aid will be suspended and the student will be responsible for the debt incurred with the Institution during the corresponding period. If at the end of the probation period the student complies with satisfactory progress standards and the study plan, the student will be considered in satisfactory academic progress, and will be classified as such by the Registrar s office. Suspension Any student who does not comply with the minimum requirements of the satisfactory progress policy will be suspended for an academic term, and the institution will proceed to withdraw the student. The student may then be readmitted, continuing in a Probation status without financial aid until he or she complies with the satisfactory progress requirements during the term in which he or she was readmitted. Appeal Process The student has the right to appeal the school s decision about Probation if he or she does not agree with his/her academic status. The appeal must be requested from the Registrar s office, and shall be addressed to the Academic Director. The student will have a period of 10 work days after having been notified of the probation to deliver an appeal. When evaluating the appeal the institution will take into consideration whether or not the student can meet satisfactory progress standards within the trial period. The following may be considered extenuating circumstances that might have affected negatively the student s ability to meet satisfactory progress standards: student illness verified by a medical doctor s certification, natural disasters, death in the immediate family -- parent, spouse, children -- divorce, change in work shift, illness in the immediate family, financial situation that might have affected the family and destabilized the home, domestic violence, mistreatment, or abuse. The academic director will evaluate the case, and convene an Appeals Committee to evaluate it if necessary, and will notify the student via certified mail within 15 work days of the decision taken about the appeal, and will keep the appropriate evidence in the academic and financial aid records. The decision of the Appeals Committee shall be final and cannot be appealed. In addition, the decision shall be documented through minutes signed by the appeals committee members. Documents required with the appeal Where the extenuating circumstances mentioned apply, the student shall provide written evidence of the particular circumstance. This evidence should include the possibility of a change that will allow the student to comply with satisfactory progress requirements at the next evaluation. READMISSION/REINSTATEMENT OF STATUS A student who applies for re-enrollment one year after his/her last day of classes will incur a re-entrollment charge of $ The courses to be repeated in the re-enrollment will not be eligible for Title IV funds disbursements. The institution shall withdraw any student who ultimately does not comply with the satisfactory progress policy. The student may apply for readmission after having been out during one academic term. Once readmitted the student will continue in the same progress status in which he/she was at the time he/she left, and will not receive Title IV funds until he/she has complied with the standards of satisfactory progress. The student will be able to have satisfactory progress status reinstated through the reposition of units in which he/she received low grades, making up absent time, and/or taking additional exams that may help him/her comply with the academic requirements END OF THE SATISFACTORY ACADEMIC PROGRESS POLICY CANCELLATION & REFUND POLICY I. REFUNDS: INSTITUTIONAL REFUND POLICY The purpose of the institutional refund policy is to ensure each student gets a fair and equitable reimbursement. We will apply the following policy to all students registered after October 7, 2000 to determine whether the institution must refund the student any monies credited to his/her account from sources other than Title IV financial aid or any other financial aid source. Any applicant who is not accepted by the institution shall be entitled to a refund of all monies paid minus the non-refundable registration fee. If a student, or in the case of a minor his/her guardian, cancels enrollment and demands a refund in writing within 3 working days of having signed the enrollment agreement, all monies paid except the registration fee should be refunded within 3 business days. The cancellation date will be determined by the postmark on the written notice or the date on which such notice was given to an administrative officer of the institution in person. In the case of cancellation before the start of classes but after the first three days of having signed the agreement, the student will receive a full refund of all monies paid except for the non-refundable registration fee. DEFINITION OF ADMINISTRATIVE AND OFFICIAL WITHDRAWALS ADMINISTRATIVE WITHDRAWAL: Any student who is absent 14 consecutive days without contacting the institution to apply for a leave of absence will be administratively withdrawn from the program. The withdrawal date will be the student s last day of attendance. OFFICIAL WITHDRAWAL BY THE STUDENT: Any student who on his own initiative withdraws from the program, or as determined by the institution is not making satisfactory progress, will be considered an official withdrawal. The withdrawal date will be the date on which the student requested the withdrawal, or the date on which the student was withdrawn by the institution for failure to make satisfactory progress. 1. The registration fee ($25.00) should be refunded within 3 business days 2. After three business days of having signed the enrollment contract and after the start of classes, refunds will be calculated based on the last day attended. a. The following applies to Non-Title IV Students: 1. Cancellation after attendance has begun, but prior to 60% completion of the program will result in a Pro Rata refund computed on the number of hours completed to the total program hours. 2. Cancellation after completing 60% of the program will result in no refund 9
11 b. The following table applies to Title IV Students: Percentage Completed Amount of Total Tuition Owed to Total Duration of the to the School Program to % 20% of total tuition owed to % 30% of total tuition owed to % 40% of total tuition owed to % 45% of total tuition owed to % 70% of total tuition owed to % 80% of total tuition owed and more 100% of total tuition owed The basis for the calculation will be the percentage of the program completed by the student until his last day of attendance divided by the duration of the period of enrollment for which funds have been granted. Refunds should be made within 30 days for non-title Students If the student does not officially withdraw in accordance with established policy, the last day of attendance will be determined by the school for a refund after an administrative withdrawal. The administrative leave will be processed no later than 14 days from the last day of the student s attendance. In the case of a student who does not return from a leave of absence, if the student notifies the institution that he/she will not return on the scheduled date, the withdrawal will be effective as of the date of notification. If the student fails to return to classes without notifying the school, the withdrawal will be effective on the date on which the student was due to return. Time of attendance is defined as the time between the start date of classes and the last day of physical attendance at the institution. Any monies due the student will be refunded within 45 days after an official or administrative withdrawal. If mitigating circumstances exist the institution may agree to a refund in excess of this policy. If the institution closes or teaching is completely discontinued after the student is enrolled and instruction has started, the school may either provide a pro-rata refund of tuition or participate in a teach-out agreement. In the case of cancellation of a course before classes have begun, the school may refund all monies paid, or the school may provide alternatives for the student to complete his/her program of study. The school will determine the option that will apply based on the circumstances at the time of course cancellation. In case of illness, accident, family tragedy or any other circumstance that prevents the student from completing his training, the institution may make a reasonable settlement with the agreement of both parties Under no circumstances shall a student be required to pay more than the amount established in his/her enrollment contract. The percentage of days completed in the training will be based on the number of calendar days completed within the scheduled days in the payment or enrollment period. If the institution sells or assigns its enrollment contracts to another institution, the new institution that acquires the rights to the contracts must honor the refund policy established in the contracts and signed by the students. Withdrawals are determined through monitoring of students completion of class participation in learning activities such as class assignments, examinations, tutorials, computer-assisted instruction, participation in academic advisement, or other academically related activities. The institution may terminate a student s enrollment for the following reasons: A) Unsatisfactory academic progress B ) Consecutive absences in excess of 14 days C ) Failure to pay D ) Breach of rules or regulations established by the institution. PAYMENT METHODS, PAYMENT PLAN, AND COLLECTIONS Nouvelle Institute accepts cash, manager s checks, money orders, or credit cards. A payment plan is available for those who qualify. The plan requires a down payment, and the remainder is paid monthly throughout the duration of the program. No interest is charged on this plan. Upon completing the course the student must have satisfied the full payment thereof. COLLECTION OF FUNDS OWED TO THE SCHOOL If the student fails to make payment, and after exhausting all collection proceedings, the school will refer the account to a collections agency. The student is required to pay the outstanding balance as well as the costs incurred in collecting on the account. This policy also applies to students whose accounts reflect a debt to the school after a withdrawal. ADDITIONAL NON-REFUNDABLE FEE: ID Card $ This fee is non-refundable once the ID card has been issued. II. REFUNDS: RETURN TO TITLE IV The school has adopted a mandatory return policy according to the Higher Education Act for students who receive Title IV funds and who failed to complete their enrollment period, under which tuition and other related costs are adjusted evenly. All refunds for these students are calculated on the basis of scheduled hours. This applies to all terminations of/by Title IV students regardless of the reason, including student decision (official withdrawal), more than 14 consecutive absences (administrative withdrawal), course cancellation, or closure of the institution. RETURN OF UNEARNED FUNDS: The refund will be issued within 45 days of the date of withdrawal, once federal programs funds have been returned in direct proportion to their original contribution. If at the time of the student s withdrawal the student has received less financial aid than is reflected in the refund calculation, the school will perform the late disbursement procedure specified by the U.S. Department of Education. Any applicant who is not accepted by the institution shall be entitled to a refund of all monies paid minus the $25 non-refundable registration fee. 10
12 If a student, or in the case of a minor his/her guardian, cancels enrollment and demands a refund in writing within 3 working days of having signed the enrollment agreement, all monies paid except the registration fee will be refunded. From students who cancel after having started classes and after three business days after having signed the enrollment contract, we shall retain a registration fee of $ ADMINISTRATIVE WITHDRAWAL: Any student who is absent 14 consecutive days without contacting the institution to apply for a leave of absence will be administratively withdrawn from the program. The withdrawal date will be the student s last day of attendance. OFFICIAL WITHDRAWAL: Any student who on his or her own initiative withdraws from the program, or as determined by the institution is not making satisfactory progress, will be considered an official withdrawal. The withdrawal date will be the date on which the student requested the withdrawal, or the date on which the student was withdrawn by the institution for failure to make satisfactory progress. If the student does not officially withdraw in accordance with established policy, the last day of attendance will be determined by the school for a refund after the administrative withdrawal has been processed. This will occur no later than 14 days from the last day of the student s attendance. In case of illness, accident, family tragedy or any other circumstance that prevents the student from completing his training, the institution may make a reasonable settlement with the agreement of both parties Under no circumstances shall a student be required to pay more than the amount established in his/her enrollment contract If the institution sells or assigns its enrollment contracts to another institution, the new institution that acquires the rights to the contracts must honor the refund policy established in the contracts and signed by the students. ADDITIONAL NON-REFUNDABLE FEE: ID Card $3.00. This fee is non-refundable once the ID card has been issued END OF CANCELLATION & REFUND POLICY CHARGE FOR EXTRA INSTRUCTION: Students have up to 150% of the completion time specified in their enrollment contract to complete their program at no additional cost. If the student extends his/her completion time beyond that 150%, the student will be billed for additional time at the rate of $12.00 per day. NON-DISCRIMINATION POLICY Nouvelle Institute admits students without regard to race, ethnic origin, color, sex, age, nationality, disability, religion, sexual preference or political ideas. In that sense, all students have the same rights and privileges to participate in programs and activities available to the students. This policy of nondiscrimination also applies in considering candidates for employment in the institution. ANTI-HAZING POLICY The Institution does not allow organizations, agencies or associations of students or other people who influence voluntarily or carelessly the physical and mental health of our students. The existence or imposition of any group of this type or any action which in anyway induces to an initiation within these groups is prohibited by the Institution. The infraction of this policy will result in disciplinary action against the violator. 11

For example, to contact the Department of Education in Tallahassee in order to clarify any questions about the high-school diploma or GED, the phone number is (850) and the website is POLICY AGAINST MISREPRESENTATION Nouvelle Institute certifies that all the information that appears in the institutional catalog and/or enrollment agreement must be fulfilled accurately. Any questions or notice of breach of the published provisions must be directed in writing to the director of the campus and/or the president of the institution. BOOKS AND MATERIALS Nouvelle Institute believes that any student who has completed the requirements for admission and financial eligibility should be provided with the books and materials necessary to help the student meet the school s academic goals. The school is committed to have sufficient inventory of academic materials and equipment on hand as of the starting dates of each program. POLICY ON CURRICULUM REVIEW AND IMPROVEMENT Nouvelle Institute establishes, as a plan to improve academic programs, the curricular review of all programs in accordance with the suggestions offered by teachers and our Advisory Committee, which meets at least once a year. These suggestions should be based on the new trends in the field of beauty and changes in the labor market.
