2 The history of Seinäjoki Vocational Education Centre, Ähtäri, Koulutie dates back to 1962 when the Vocational School of Ähtäri Region was founded. Later on the vocational institution has changed its name a couple of times. Till 2008, before merging with Seinäjoki Vocational Education Centre, it was called Ähtäri Vocational Institute. Characteristic to our branch is its location in the intersection of three different regional councils. This means that our students come from a wide area; not only from Osthrobothnia, but also from the Central Finland and Northern Tampere Region. In the recent years the emphasis in our branch has been in flexible and versatile teaching arrangements. As a special field of development we have optional courses based on students hobbies. We also promote student welfare services and activities for leisure time as well as activities for students living in the school dormitory. The fields of study at our institution are the most essential fields of Technology, Communications and Transport as well as those of Tourism, Catering and Domestic Services. The latest field of study starting at our branch is Social Services and Health Care. The education in the transition period is developed, for example, as Career Start education. We are cooperating with Ähtäri Upper Secondary School to give the students the opportunity of studying for two qualifications at the same time, eg. a vocational qualification and the Matriculation Examination. Seinäjoki Vocational Education Centre, Adult Education arranges teaching at our premises as well and we also give apprenticeship training. 3 Optional Studies At the Ähtäri, Koulutie branch we put special emphasis on the optional studies based on students hobbies. With the help of these studies we aim at supporting the growth of the students personalities and at increasing their commitment to their vocational studies as well as at strengthening their self-esteem and performing skills. Optional studies offered are, eg. Music education o Band course o Singing and karaoke course Studies related to motorsports o Car racing engineering o Carting engineering o Ice racing by motor bikes Physical exercise studies o Courses in different ball games o Ice Hockey course Entrepreneurship studies Courses in traffic education First aid courses Some courses taken outside our institution may also be included into our optional studies. Such are group leader course given by the congregation physical training courses given by sports clubs courses given by fire and rescue services courses in acting and performing skills
4 Student dormitory The institution has a cozy student dormitory, where the students can get accommodation free of charge. A breakfast and an evening snack are available by paying a small fee. Living in the student dormitory is supervised and there are many leisure time activities on offer for the students. A person taking accommodation at the dormitory commits him/herself to following the rules of the dormitory. The rules are given to all who accept living quarters at the dormitory. Leisure time activities for students During the term guided activities are organized as a part of the educational task of the dormitory. These activities include, for example evening activities (karaoke, coffee, tea, chatting and getting together, etc.) A course in dormitory activities, worth 1 credit units, which one gets by collecting enough stamps to one s dormitory pass Courses based on students hobbies. They are marked into a Hobby pass and credited as optional studies Karaoke evenings Swimming at the spa in Hotel Mesikämmen Preliminary fire extinguishing practice lead by the chief fire officer (compulsory to everyone who has accommodation at the dormitory) Traffic safety evening A lecture by the school social worker and school nurse on Young people, health and sex Physical exercise tutor training Film and theatre evenings Conduct in a restaurant (à la carte dining at the school) A lecture by the police on young people s penal responsibility (compulsory to everyone who has accommodation at the dormitory) The common living quarters, gym, billiard and ping pong tables, tv, VCR, different games and a computer equipped with an internet connection, are freely at the disposal of all students. The dormitory activities and leisure time activities have been developed in cooperation with the Edumotiva project. New Joop project, funded by the Finnish National Board of Education, started in The goal of this project is to develop, together with Seinäjoki Vocational Education Centre, a common plan of action for joining dormitory activities and hobbies as parts of optional studies. 5 Student welfare services Student welfare services take care of the students physical, mental and social welfare. Their goal is to create a safe and healthy learning environment and to forward the well-being of the people working and studying at the institution. Student welfare services help the early recognition and intervention of learning difficulties and other problems and prevent students from dropping out before graduating. Our student welfare team consists of the school nurse, school social worker, school psychologist, guidance counselor, the person in charge of special needs education and the education manager. In problems dealing with studying, leisure time, health or other personal affairs one can turn to, for example, the school social worker, school nurse or guidance counselor who aim at helping the students with their problems or, when necessary, get help from other members of the student welfare support network. 6 Projects Project Flexible learning environments 1 st April, st May, Goals Promoting the interest in vocational education and decreasing dropping out in mid-studies as well as motivating students to studying and finding work. Arranging flexible learning environments and personal support measures to young people who have no vocational education and who need special support. Giving overall support for the student and preventing dropping out by arranging support measures, dormitory activities and hobbies. Developing, together with Seinäjoki Vocational Education Centre, a common plan of action used in the whole education centre. Project manager Anne Rinne firstname.lastname@sedu.fi The expanded on-the-job learning in the Wood Processing field more studying at the work place The Finnish National Board of Education has chosen the carpenter line of Sedu, Ähtäri, Koulutie to a trial which executes an individual study plan. When normally an on-the-job training period worth 20 credit units is included in the studies, in wood processing field at Ähtäri, Koulutie it is possible to study at the working place for as many as 80 credit units. Once the basic skills in machining and finishing necessary for a carpenter are learned, as well as essential work safety, general studies and vocational theory lessons are given, the student goes to work for a company in the field of wood processing and comes to school for theory lessons about 1-4 times a month. Expanded on-the-job learning benefits many All parties involved in the project students, the vocational institution and companies involved benefit from the project. If traditional studying at school isn t working, it is possible to give the student a change to study while working for a company in his field of study. The project also forwards the chance to gain two qualifications simultaneously in cooperation with general upper secondary education. Long on-the-job training period benefits both the student and the company. The student may later gain a permanent job at the company he has learned to know, and the company gets an experienced professional to its service. The cooperation between the vocational institution and companies increases and teaching can be better developed to meet the demands of the working life. 7 Model for traffic education Seinäjoki Vocational Education Centre, Ähtäri, Koulutie (former Ähtäri Vocational Institute) is part of the national traffic education network of the Finnish National Board of Education. Since 1997 we have been developing, together with Ähtäri Upper Secondary School, Liikenneturva and the Finnish National Board of Education, models for giving traffic education. An important part of the project is to test alternative teaching methods in traffic education at schools and to search for national models to help to influence young people s skills and behavior in traffic. A traffic education course carried out by the institutions has been tailored into a national model that has also been constructed into an internet course in a virtual school project of the Finnish National Board of Education. The traffic education project aims at improving the traffic behavior of the risk group young people between the ages of 16 and 20 by influencing their attitudes and by increasing their knowledge of the structure, safety equipment and driving qualities of vehicles. Seinäjoki Vocational Education Centre, Ähtäri, Koulutie arranges traffic safety happenings and education to students of comprehensive schools as well as traffic evenings to elderly drivers during the yearly traffic safety week arranged by the Finnish National Board of Education. The aim of Seinäjoki Vocational Education Centre, Ähtäri, Koulutie and its partners is to improve traffic safety especially in the vicinity of schools, to develop traffic arrangements in the surroundings and to forward the traffic safety of the students. Ähtäri, Koulutie branch has, for example, signed EU s European Road Charter. The model for traffic education has been awarded with the 2008 Traffic Safety Award of the Governor of the State Provincial Office of Western Finland and with an honorary diploma of Insurance Company Sampo s Safety Award 2000.
