University of Detroit Mercy - Assurance Argument May, P a g e Table of Contents Criterion One Mission. 3 Criterion Two Integrity: Ethical and Responsible Conduct..26 Criterion Three Teaching and Learning: Quality, Resources, and Support..48 Criterion Four Teaching and Learning: Evaluation and Improvement.. 74 Criterion Five Resources, Planning and Effectiveness 105 2

University of Detroit Mercy - Assurance Argument May, P a g e Criterion One. Mission The institution s mission is clear and articulated publicly; it guides the institution s operations. 1.A. The institution s mission is broadly understood within the institution and guides its operations. 1. The mission statement is developed through a process suited to the nature and culture of the institution and is adopted by the governing board. Argument: University of Detroit Mercy has a clearly articulated mission that is broadly understood within the institution and that guides the operations of the institution. The Mission emerged from the education and service traditions of the University sponsors, the Religious Sisters of Mercy and the Society of Jesus. UDM Mission Statement The University of Detroit Mercy, a Catholic university in the Jesuit and Mercy traditions, exists to provide excellent, student-centered, undergraduate and graduate education in an urban context. A UDM education seeks to integrate the intellectual, spiritual, ethical, and social development of our students. The Mission documents were developed through a collaborative process involving multiple stakeholders and constituents and were adopted by the University s Board of Trustees in The Mission documents include the Mission Statement, Vision Statement and Foundation Statement. The Mission documents reflect the integrated heritages of the Sisters of Mercy and the Society of Jesus, which beyond academic excellence and student-centered, life-long learning, stress compassion, justice and the dignity of the person. 2. The institution s academic programs, student support services, and enrollment profile are consistent with its stated mission. Argument: The operations of University of Detroit Mercy, including academic programs, student support services and student enrollment, are specifically aligned with UDM s Mission. Enrollment Profile As described in Current Facts about UDM, the institution enrolls approximately 5,000 students in undergraduate, graduate and professional programs (Dentistry, Law), of which 3

University of Detroit Mercy - Assurance Argument May, P a g e approximately 59% are female and 41% are male, 18% are of a racial and/or ethnic minority, and the average age is 26 years. Other pertinent data that describe the University and illustrate consistency between the Mission and the University are provided in the document. Academic Programs Academic program mission statements further illustrate this relationship. Academic program, department and college mission statements are often articulated on academic program web pages and other materials, and examples are provided in the Sample of Academic and Departmental Mission Statements. Similar to the University Mission statement, faculty, administrators and other stakeholders collaboratively create the mission statements for academic/support units. Academic program mission statements are regularly reviewed as part of the academic program review process. Specifically, item 3, Mission and Vision, of the Academic Program Review Report is used to evaluate an academic program s congruence with the University mission. The Mission section of the School of Architecture Program Review Self- Study illustrates compliance with the standard. Conversely, the academic program review process may result in the requirement that a program should re-conceptualize and revise the mission if it is found not to be aligned with the University Mission, as was the case with the Bachelor of Science in Cyber Security/Information Assurance. Evidence of academic programs alignment with the University Mission is also uniquely demonstrated by the numerous community-based teaching clinics directly operated by various academic programs (e.g., Law, Psychology). Collectively, these clinics annually serve more than 23,000 individuals with an emphasis on serving those in greatest need consistent with the service traditions of the founding orders. UDM Clinics and Urban Outreach Update provides a comprehensive list of these clinics. In addition to the University s public teaching clinics, UDM delivers specific courses to train future community leaders through the Institute for Leadership and Service (ILS) that provides opportunities for all members of the UDM community to engage in social change for the common good. The ILS s Strategic Vision illustrates the manner in which the Institute integrates both academic and direct service opportunities for students, faculty and staff while the Multi-Institutional Leadership Snapshot illustrates student outcomes related to mission, service, and leadership activities. Student Support Services 4

University of Detroit Mercy - Assurance Argument May, P a g e UDM provides mission-based student-centered services in six broad categories: 1) new student orientations such as that illustrated in the Prologues, Transitions and Viewpoints outline for freshman; 2) tutorial and academic support services through campus-based venues such as the Student Success Center; 3) retention strategies including an early-warning tracking system and outreach provided through the Titan Success Network, as well as other focused retention and student support services designed for students; 4) counseling and health care services provided through the University Wellness Center; 5) cultural, spiritual and other support services, including University Ministry, Student Affairs, and student support forums offered on each campus; and 6) year-round enrichment opportunities on-campus, in the city, region, and throughout the country during alternative spring break trips and other activities. In addition to recent improvements to the academic support environments, the first floor of the main campus library was renovated in 2009 to support group-learning activities, including the addition of a café and social space for use by student organizations. In , a new Student Fitness Center was built, providing space for a range of group and individual fitness activities, as well as event space for student programming. Financial support is regularly provided to student organizations for activities that contribute to student life. Collectively, the array of student support services is designed to support the intellectual, spiritual, ethical and social development of students consistent with the institutional Mission. Enrollment The Office of Admissions and Enrollment s strategies and financial aid allocation processes are also directly related to the University Mission, both in the language used to describe the University and in the manner in which financial aid is allocated according to our demographic commitments. Through a matrix of eight academic categories and five financial aid need levels, the Office of Admissions develops financial aid packages to attract students who have the potential to succeed. The matrix provides greater institutional aid for those students who have higher academic profiles, regardless of need, while also providing a high percentage of aid for those students with both exceptional academic profiles and high demonstrated need. Through this approach, 30% of UDM freshman candidates who are Pell-eligible are able to enroll. Approximately 97% of the 2,102 undergraduates who were enrolled in 2014 received some kind of financial support or discount to attend. Of the 2,102 enrolled undergraduates, 1,548 (74%) had demonstrated financial need. The remaining 503 students received merit 5

University of Detroit Mercy - Assurance Argument May, P a g e awards based on their high school academic performance. This matrix is adjusted annually and contributes directly to a mission-centric enrollment profile with the goal of a culturally, economically and socially diverse student population. For students who do not meet the minimum requirements for entry into a specific University college/school, but demonstrate potential, a personal non-cognitive characteristic interview is conducted using the Non Cognitive Interview (University of Maryland). Successful candidates are admitted to University College, and a contract is created between the student and the Student Success Center staff. The Non-Cognitive Attributes rubric is also used with two current grant-funded projects designed to provide exceptional experiences in the sciences to underrepresented students (i.e., NIH-Building Infrastructure Leading to Diversity (BUILD) grant, National Science Foundation grant). In addition, UDM was awarded a five-year TRiO grant from the U.S. Department of Education in 2015 to support first-generation and low-income students and students with disabilities. Since nearly one third of UDM s 2015 entering class were first-generation college students, the TRiO funding focus on increasing student retention and success by strengthening student engagement with UDM, particularly in mission-oriented activities, is integral to the University. UDM also regularly offers several Summer Camps for Pre-College and College Age Applicants to recruit students who may not otherwise pursue college. In 2014 the Office of Admissions created the Assistant Director for Diversity Recruitment position to further increase efforts targeting underrepresented students. Similar positions also exist at UDM s Schools of Dentistry and Law. 3. The institution s planning and budgeting priorities align with and support the mission. (This sub-component may be addressed by reference to the response to Criterion 5.C.1.) Argument: The planning and budgeting processes are clearly aligned with and support the University mission. The mission of the University is operationalized through the University Strategic Plan and guides its content. Several goals in the University Strategic Plan are specifically mission-related, including: Drive Academic and Institutional Excellence (Goal 1); Foster the personal and professional growth and leadership development of all students (Goal 2.4); Live 6

University of Detroit Mercy - Assurance Argument May, P a g e the Catholic, Mercy, Jesuit and urban mission and identity (Goal 3.2); and Amplify the University s dynamic community engagement (Goal 5). The Strategic Plan illustrates the goals and objectives, while the Third Year Report of the Strategic Plan highlights recent accomplishments. Article 4.01 of the Bylaws for the University of Detroit Mercy, adopted October 31, 2014, indicates that the Board shall determine the University s mission, establish strategic direction and approve the strategic plan, Article 9.02 states that the President should prepare an annual accountability report to the Board and the Board s evaluation process shall include the President s effectiveness in regards to the University s mission. In addition, the Board committees assess their performance with regard to Mission biannually, as required by Article 7.03 of the UDM Bylaws. The University s budget aligns with the Mission in several explicit ways. Funds are allocated to support academic excellence and facility improvements (as detailed in 5.C.1). In addition to providing regular funding to support faculty research, the University has significantly expanded its faculty development programs over the past six years. Support for research has been enhanced with the establishment of the Internal Research Fund and reestablishment of the Office for Sponsored Programs and Research Activities (OSPRA). As well as ongoing stabilization of enrollment and funding sources identified in goals 2 and 4 of the Strategic Plan, the University continues to enhance its Dynamic Community Engagement efforts (Goal 5), which include off-campus, clinical, outreach and public interest activities. Efforts to revitalize the area surrounding the McNichols Campus are detailed in the 2015 Live6 Alliance News Release. UDM also partners with various foundations and funding agencies, including Ford Motor Company, Kellogg Foundation, and the Kresge Foundation to support these efforts. Commitment to the Mission is also demonstrated by financial support allocated to the Office for Mission and Identity to support employee involvement in mission-related activities. The Office of Mission and Identity facilitates mission-related activities for staff and faculty and administers the University s Mission Micro Grant program that provides financial support to faculty and staff promoting the University s Mission. The Mission Micro Grant Award Project Summary provides specific details. Through UDM s Mission and Community Service Leave Policy, employees are encouraged to engage in UDM s Mission through participation in 7

University of Detroit Mercy - Assurance Argument May, P a g e sponsored activities held during working hours. In addition, a number of activities are offered to staff, administrators, faculty, and board members as illustrated by the 2015 Mission and Identity Annual Report. UDM s University Ministry is particularly engaged in creating mission-driven programming to enhance the spiritual, social and ethical development of students, faculty and staff through retreats, service/immersion and advocacy trips, major liturgical events, hosting speakers, and coordinating other events. Finally, recent renovations to a Muslim Prayer space and Catholic chapel further demonstrate budgetary support and alignment for the University Mission. 9 University of Detroit Mercy - Assurance Argument May, P a g e 1.B. The mission is articulated publicly. 1. The institution clearly articulates its mission through one or more public documents, such as statements of purpose, vision, values, goals, plans, or institutional priorities. 2. The mission document or documents are current and explain the extent of the institution s emphasis on the various aspects of its mission, such as instruction, scholarship, research, application of research, creative works, clinical service, public service, economic development, and religious or cultural purpose. 3. The mission document or documents identify the nature, scope, and intended constituents of the higher education programs and services the institution provides. Argument: The Mission of the University is articulated publicly through mission documents that include the Mission Statement, Vision Statement, and Foundation Statement. UDM Vision Statement The University of Detroit Mercy will be recognized as a premier private university in the Great Lakes region, distinguished by graduates who lead and serve in their communities. UDM Foundation Statement The University mission evolved from the educational traditions of its sponsors, the Sisters of Mercy and the Society of Jesus. These Catholic traditions emphasize concern for the dignity of the person and for the common good of the world community. The Society of Jesus (Jesuits) founded the University of Detroit in The Sisters of Mercy, Province of Detroit, founded Mercy College of Detroit in Together these religious congregations created a partnership in higher education to establish the University of Detroit Mercy in Each religious congregation brings its spirit to the mission of the University. This spirit includes commitment to quality education, the service of faith and promotion of justice, and compassionate service to persons in need. The Mission, Vision, and Foundation documents describe the emphasis and focus of the University s work and the constituents it serves. These documents are readily available to members of the University community and the public, including prospective students, through the University website and on various print materials. The Mission and Vision Statements are also prominently displayed throughout campus facilities and guide the institution s strategic planning process. The Mission Statement is also found in Current Facts about UDM, the UDM 9

University of Detroit Mercy - Assurance Argument May, P a g e Student Handbook, College and School Handbooks, the UDM Media Guide and various fundraising and promotional brochures. The Mission Statement is printed on event programs such as Honors Convocation, graduation, and University celebratory events. In addition, the Mission Statement is printed on the University s alumni magazine, Spiritus. The Mission Statement and the corresponding school or college mission statements are also incorporated within applications and presentations to funding agencies to assist in defining the unique character of the institution and the programs seeking funding. In 2006, the Office of Mission and Identity was established and an assistant to the President for Mission and Identity was appointed. The office has coordinated a number of activities to further engage the University community through dialogue and reflection about their understanding and practice of the mission. In addition to activities specifically hosted by the Office of Mission and Identity, mission-related activities are hosted across the University by various groups. For instance, in Fall 2015, the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs hosted two highly focused events to engage faculty and staff in the Mission through facilitated reflection and dialogue. These discussions proved to be highly effective as tools of engagement with the participation of more than 65 faculty and staff. The UDM mission documents are current and explain and clarify each of the key components of the mission. The link for the UDM Mission and Identity web page is prominently located at the top of the University home page. The key components of the mission statement: University (with subsections for teaching, research and service), Catholic, Jesuit, Mercy and Urban are further delineated. Discussion of these key components are part of a mission half-day retreat, which in its first 10 years has served over 1,300 UDM employees, staff, faculty, and administrators; including 13 Board of Trustee members. Various public documents, including information from the University website, UDM is a University, UDM is Catholic, UDM is Jesuit and Mercy, further clarify the role of the University and the University s relationship to its sponsoring religious orders (Mercy and Jesuit), and specifically those organizations within each religious congregation that assist Higher Education (such as Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities, Conference of Mercy Higher Education). The Strategic Plan, which flows directly from the UDM Mission Statement, formalizes achievement of key components in the stated goals of the plan. These goals include: Academic and Institutional Excellence, Increase Enrollment, Retention, and Graduation of 10

University of Detroit Mercy - Assurance Argument May, P a g e Students, Heighten the Distinction of the University, Create a Culture that Fosters Effective Management and Strong Financial Health, and Amplify the University s Dynamic Community Engagement. In addition, eight specific mission-related objectives include: 1) Expand global awareness and perspectives; 2) Celebrate and broaden inclusive excellence; 3) Foster the personal and professional growth and leadership development of all students; 4) Live the Catholic, Mercy, Jesuit, and urban mission and identity; 5) Capitalize on the University s historic name, legacy, and image by promoting the Mercy and Jesuit identity; 6) Create experiences to help all students assume leadership and service to others; 7) Accentuate the University community s leadership, service, and community engagement, and 8) Lead in the revitalization of the community surrounding the University. As an academic institution and in reflection of its Mission, UDM s emphasis on the key components of teaching, research, and service are explicitly described in Section 5.9 of the collective bargaining agreement, Agreement between University of Detroit Mercy and University of Detroit Mercy Professors Union, and constitute the basis for decision-making for hiring and the granting of promotion, tenure and emeritus status. The prominence that teaching, research and service hold at UDM is also demonstrated through the annual reporting process and is further emphasized through a wide range of activities that include but are not limited to: annual awards made for teaching excellence, an annual internal research fund to support faculty research activities, annual University-wide forum to share scholarly works of faculty and students (i.e., Celebration of Scholarly Achievement), the tri-annual publication highlighting research activities occurring at the University UDM), and the University s online newsletter, Campus Connection, that provides weekly highlights of teaching, research, and service activities. The nature, scope and intended constituents of University programs are articulated in the Mission documents. In addition, a host of internal and external documents further clarify the nature, scope and intended constituents of the academic programs and services UDM provides. These include but are not limited to, Current Facts about UDM, undergraduate and graduate recruitment brochures, student handbooks, and college and school alumni newsletters. In addition, the mission is the major theme of the University alumni publication, Spiritus. Mission is also an integral part of the hiring process. As such, specific items are often 11

University of Detroit Mercy - Assurance Argument May, P a g e included in interview guides and applications to ensure that the Mission is communicated to prospective employees and to promote engagement with the Mission. Sources: UDM Mission Statement UDM is a University UDM is Catholic UDM is Jesuit and Mercy Agreement between University of Detroit Mercy and University of Detroit Mercy Professors Union Collective Bargaining Agreement 1.C The institution understands the relationship between its mission and the diversity of society. 1. The institution addresses its role in a multicultural society Argument: University of Detroit Mercy not only understands the relationship between its Mission and the diversity of society, but is committed to inclusion and meeting the needs of all individuals. University of Detroit Mercy addresses its role in a multicultural society through a multitude of methods that include but are not limited to geographic location of the institution s campuses, recruitment of students, recruitment and hiring of faculty and staff, financial aid support, campus life activities, and academic programming. The Office of Admissions Recruitment Plan provides one example of the University s strategic efforts at recruiting a diverse student population through several methods. Metropolitan Detroit is a region of contrasts. While the city is composed of 82% African Americans, 7.8 % Whites, and 6.8% Hispanics, the surrounding area, Wayne County, is majority white (76%). Wayne County is also home to one of the largest Arab American communities in the United States. Within this context, UDM provides quality education, service and research in each of its colleges and schools that directly address the University s role in a multicultural society. This is illustrated through academic programs and clinics, internationally-based educational opportunities, library holdings, student organizations and student events. Academic Programs and Clinics 12

University of Detroit Mercy - Assurance Argument May, P a g e UDM has several academic programs that reflect UDM s emphasis on preparing students to embrace various aspects of diversity, including gender, ethnicity, race and religion and living in a global society. These include but are not limited to Women s and Gender Studies, African American Studies, Islamic Studies, and Catholic Studies and coursework in such topics as International Law and Global Sustainable Development. In addition, unique academic programs have emerged in the last decade that specifically focuses on urban areas, such as Detroit. For example, the Master of Community Development (MCD) program focuses on urban-centered outreach and social justice. Recognizing the program s unique contributions in the region, in 2013, the W. K. Kellogg Foundation awarded the program a three year $750,000 grant for scholarships, co-op placements and fellowships to students from varied backgrounds. In addition to offering a range of specific academic programs that address multicultural issues, the concept of social justice is an underlying theme of the core curriculum and is found in the academic programs offered at the University. As such, students are continuously introduced to issues of fairness, marginalization, and disparities that exist throughout the world, and in their neighborhoods, and are taught the importance of service and advocacy and their role in promoting social justice. UDM students are also uniquely prepared to work and serve in settings with diverse populations. Each of the University s community-based teaching clinics (counseling clinic, dental clinics, health clinic, law clinics, psychology clinic) serve the public at no or reduced costs and specifically serve indigent and low income individuals, most of whom are from ethnic and/or racial minorities. In addition, these teaching clinics also specifically target marginalized individuals (e.g., homeless, new immigrants) and individuals involved in public systems (e.g., child welfare, criminal justice). As such, the clinics provide a rich learning experience for students that reflect the needs of a multicultural society. Several co-curricular programs exist that engage students with individuals from diverse cultures. Course-based service learning opportunities partner faculty and students with several area communities, foundations and service opportunities. These partnerships promote student development allowing them to engage with complex social problems among diverse populations, including neighborhoods with large Arabic and Latino populations. A summary of service learning activities is provided in the 2012 Service Learning Snapshot. 13

University of Detroit Mercy - Assurance Argument May, P a g e UDM also offers a variety of immersion trips throughout the United States to provide students with opportunities to visit communities that are diverse ethnically, racially and socioeconomically. As illustrated on the University Mission Service Trip Sites , trips have included Juarez/El Paso, TX; Gulfport/Biloxi, MS; New Orleans, LA; Pittsburgh, PA; and Tuscaloosa, AL. These trips assist UDM students in understanding the complex issues surrounding systemic poverty and other critical issues from a national and a global perspective. Internationally-based Educational Experiences The University of Detroit Mercy provides several contexts for studying abroad through Internationally Based Educational Experiences (IBEEs). IBEEs include semester-long study abroad and exchange programs, as well as short-term faculty-led options. Semester IBEEs, such as the Detroit/Volterra program, provide opportunity to live and study in residence. Operating with the support of the Regional Government of Tuscany for nearly 30 years, the Volterra/Detroit program provides students a full semester of study in Italian art, language, history and architecture, as well as extensive interaction with the local community. UDM s exchange program with the Technical University of Warsaw in Poland has offered annual exchange of ten architecture students from each school for a term of study. Students from a variety of disciplines have traveled with UDM faculty in short-term learning experiences to Brazil, China, Cuba, Ireland, France and Spain as part of scheduled coursework. Additionally, UDM students can access any of the 28 Jesuit university programs abroad through the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities (AJCU) shared-program partnership. UDM also recently designated a Fulbright U.S. Student Program advisor to promote fellowship opportunities for U.S. graduating college seniors, graduate students, young professionals and artists to study, conduct research, learn foreign languages, and/or teach English abroad. UDM/Fulbright-Hays Group Project Abroad to Brazil UDM was awarded its first Fulbright Hays GPA, a curriculum enhancement project to Northeast Brazil (award period August 2015-December 2016). This collaborative learning experience offers selected UDM faculty and Detroit-area educators multiple perspectives of the African-American experience through scholarly research and dialogue in Northeast Brazil so as to inform learning, build and enhance resources and internationalize curricula in meaningful and measurable ways. Participants will investigate cultural products, practices and perspectives of 14

University of Detroit Mercy - Assurance Argument May, P a g e African identity, recognizing the interdependence of cultures through exposure to arts, cultural, and religious traditions, and visits to educational institutions and social organizations. Issues related to racial discrimination, and approaches to confronting and eradicating inequality will be examined between the two countries. UDM participants will develop thematic units and projects that are meaningful and measurable and that can be integrated at many levels and broadly shared. Library UDM s vast library holdings also reflect the institution s role in a multicultural society, and the library s role in student learning. In addition to a host of international and national materials that specifically emphasize such cultural identity issues as religion, class, race, gender and ethnicity, the library also has a large collection of materials reflective of regional issues. A complete list of collections is provided in the UDM Library Special Collections and includes such diverse topics as the Black Abolitionist Archive, Carney Latin American Solidarity Archives, Dudley Randall Broadside Press collection, James T. Callow Folklore Archive, and an historic exploration of Father Charles E. Coughlin s Influence. Student Events and Student Organizations Diversity is also clearly evidenced through campus activities, organizations and services provided for and by students. Examples include African American fraternities and sororities, and various other ethnic student organizations that foster inclusion in the university community. Student organizations include the Muslim Student Association, Chaldean American Student Association and the Hispanic American Student Association. Professional organizations supporting minority students include: NOMAS (National Organization of Minority Architect Students), NSBE (National Society of Black Engineers), SWE (Society of Women Engineers), and Black, Italian, and Middle Eastern Law Student Associations. In addition, the School of Dentistry s Alliance for Inclusion organization seeks to unify the School of Dentistry as one common group, open to everyone of every race, religion, gender and sexual orientation. Finally, the Spectrum and OUTlaws organizations specifically support UDM s LGBT community. The University maintains comprehensive support services for international students, students with disabilities, and students with specific language and/or other cultural needs. The International Services Office supports international students, faculty and staff with both logistical support and cultural diversity programming, while the Office of Disability Support Services provides services to students with disabilities, as well as faculty and staff training related to 15

University of Detroit Mercy - Assurance Argument May, P a g e supporting students with disabilities. The Office of Language and Cultural Training provides academic programming in language and cultural customs. The Office of Language and Cultural Training also hosts the Student Conversation Club that provides an opportunity for international and United States students to come together to learn about each other's cultures, while expanding their social networks. 2. The institution s processes and activities reflect attention to human diversity as appropriate within its mission and for the constituencies it serves. Argument: In addition to the broad variety of activities discussed earlier, UDM implements a variety of activities that intentionally reflect attention to human diversity. Student, faculty and staff recruitment activities provide specific examples of this focus. Targeted efforts to support veterans and efforts to garner external funding to promote enhanced academic opportunities for underserved populations provide other examples of UDM s commitment to human diversity. UDM provides a variety of diversity-focused resources to further promote attention to human diversity (e.g., racial, ethnic, religious, gender, age), including ethnic heritage celebrations and diverse spiritual spaces. Student Recruitment A wide range of student recruitment activities are used to attract a diverse student population including, but not limited to, attracting students from the surrounding community, the state, the nation, and other countries, and to specifically recruit students from diverse socioeconomic, ethnic and religious backgrounds. This is accomplished through targeted recruitment efforts in diverse regions similar to Detroit. In addition, significant financial aid is allocated to support students who otherwise would be unable to afford enrollment at UDM. In addition to University-wide recruitment efforts, colleges and schools have also employed a number of strategies to increase the number of underrepresented minority students. For example, the College of Engineering & Science is a lead participant in the Detroit Area Pre- College Engineering Program (DAPCEP). DAPCEP is designed to increase the number of historically underrepresented minority students interested and effectively prepared to enter the fields of engineering and science. More than 700 students from 4th through 12th grades enroll in weekend courses in math, science, computer science and engineering during each fall and winter 16

University of Detroit Mercy - Assurance Argument May, P a g e semester. The University also offers additional summer enrichment programs to assist the educational efforts of the local community. UDM has also received a number of foundation and federal grants in support of efforts to recruit minority and underrepresented students. These grants support recruitment and education for health professionals, including nurses, counselors, psychologists, community developers and students pursuing the traditional sciences and engineering. Over the last several years, UDM has also made concerted efforts to recruit international students from Canada, China and India. The efforts have included partnerships and cooperative agreements with internationally based universities. The collaborative models are designed to increase student diversity and better prepare students to live and work in a multicultural world. Faculty/Administrator Recruitment As an Equal Opportunity Employer, UDM has specific advertising and hiring guidelines that are used to promote diverse applicant pools for faculty, administrators, and librarian positions, These activities include broad-based advertising in academic publications (e.g., The Chronicle of Higher Education), targeted advertising on discipline-specific listservs and advertising in minority-specific publications (e.g., Diverse Issues in Higher Education). Two documents provide comprehensive guidance to the recruitment process: 1) Administrators, Faculty, and Librarian Position Searches Policies and Procedures and 2) Guidelines for Recruiting and Hiring a Diverse Faculty and Administration. Veteran Support Since 2012, UDM has been designated a Military Friendly School. UDM is among the top 20% of schools nationwide to effectively embrace military service members, veterans, and spouses as students and ensure their success on campus. The Associate Vice President and University Registrar serves as the designated VA certifying official assigned to support military students from application to graduation. A web page devoted specifically to information for Veterans provides program details. External Funding Activities Further highlighting UDM s commitment to social justice, faculty and administrators regularly pursue external funding to support academic and service activities that target underserved populations and that assist in meeting the needs of a changing society. Current examples, not highlighted previously, include federal grants from the Health Resources and 17

University of Detroit Mercy - Assurance Argument May, P a g e Services Administration (HRSA) awarded to the graduate Counseling program to prepare students to work with high risk, marginalized adolescents and young adults in order to expand the capacity of qualified behavioral health professionals; HRSA funding to the College of Health Professions to provide financial support to prepare advanced nurse practitioners to work in underserved areas in the Detroit area; a School of Dentistry award to recruit and assist minority dental students, as these students are most likely to practice in areas that serve minorities and indigent populations. In addition, the School of Law recently received funding to assist new attorneys to establish practices and provide legal representation to clients in disadvantaged areas. Other Diversity-Focused Resources UDM maintains a web page specifically devoted to Diversity that further communicates UDM s commitment to preparing students to live and work in a diverse world. It also further emphasizes UDM s commitment to non-discrimination. UDM also maintains a Commission for Women in the University to promote a supportive, respectful and equitable environment for all women in the University community. Finally, UDM facilitates a home buyer s assistance program to provide financial support to faculty and staff to enable them to live near one of the three campuses. The institution s mission demonstrates commitment to the public good. Argument: Since the establishment of our two founding institutions, University of Detroit in 1877, and Mercy College in 1941, both institutions have been committed to the public good. According to the History of UDM, the founding orders established their local colleges to improve the lives of men and women through higher education. They believed that this 18

University of Detroit Mercy - Assurance Argument May, P a g e education should occur in Detroit, a growing urban center so that students could learn in a dynamic urban community and gain valuable experience that only a major metropolitan area could offer. At the same time, they believed Detroit and the region would benefit from the talents and skills of graduates. The religious orders shared their belief in the power of education to change people and, through them, change the world, and as a result, each began colleges to foster the intellectual, social, spiritual and moral development of individuals. The 1990 consolidation into University of Detroit Mercy resulted in the integration of these two compatible and complementary institutions and combined resources and operations within one institution with the same ongoing commitments. As such, UDM has been able to maximize and expand academic effectiveness, while improving efficiencies in administration, and has been broadly recognized as an effective, creative response to the challenges that have faced private higher education. More than 139 years after its founding, UDM is the state s largest, private, Catholic institution and continues to serve and support the city of Detroit and the state of Michigan, addressing the region s economic challenges through various academic, direct service and community enrichment programs. 1. Actions and decisions reflect an understanding that in its educational role the institution serves the public, not solely the institution, and thus entails a public obligation. Argument: UDM possesses a self-understanding of its role in the broader community in addition to its primary purpose of being an educational institution. The Mission Statement attests to the importance of the urban community within which it is situated. This self-understanding is further evidenced through myriad programs and initiatives that specifically benefit the broader community. Community Clinics UDM s 16 clinics provide a range of services to the public at reduced or no cost. More than 350 students and 120 faculty spend approximately 100,000 hours per year providing direct services in the clinics to more than 23,000 Michigan residents. In addition to the two main clinics, one at the Corktown campus and one in a hospital complex, the School of Dentistry have four outreach clinics and 17 community-based clinical service-learning sites, including a mobile unit for dental care for nursing homes. The School 19

University of Detroit Mercy - Assurance Argument May, P a g e recently partnered with Delta Foundation to support a mobile dental coach that visits Detroit-area elementary schools and provides dental care. The dental hygiene program provides services in Detroit-area schools and other community-based sites. The School of Dentistry employs a director of Community Outreach and a director of Diversity and Inclusivity, both of whom work to expand the School s impact in the community. The School of Law operates several specialized legal clinics that include Immigration, Urban Law and Juvenile Appellate, among others. The College of Liberal Arts & Education operates both a Counseling Clinic and a Psychology Clinic, collectively serving more than 400 clients per year. The Counseling Clinic is the only no-cost mental health clinic in Southeast Michigan, while the Psychology Clinic offers low-cost mental health services. The College of Health Professions operates the McAuley Health Center to provide primary health services to residents in one of the most economically challenged sections of Detroit. Nursing students provide services at Cabrini Clinic and at remote clinics including the Sts. Peter and Paul Warming Center and St. Aloysius, located in Detroit, providing care for homeless and elderly residents. The School of Architecture operates a non-profit architectural practice, the Detroit Collaborative Design Center (DCDC). The DCDC works with community-based development organizations, local governments, residents and stakeholders, private developers, students, and local design professionals to enhance local leadership capacity and to promote quality design. Community Service Programs and Initiatives In addition to the clinics, several of the colleges and schools provide community service through specialized programs that represent UDM s commitment to its civic society. Examples of these include: Tax preparation services provided by students and faculty of the College of Business Administration, energy audit services provided by the College of Engineering & Science, and the development of free lending libraries hosted by the College of Liberal Arts & Education. Library Services In addition to the role of UDM libraries as a hub of scholarship and knowledge for the academic community locally, nationally and globally, the libraries and holdings are available to the public, and serve as an integral community resource. The library also maintains several public access computers for local residents to provide Internet access to individuals who 20

University of Detroit Mercy - Assurance Argument May, P a g e otherwise would not have access. Similarly, the library has allocated specific funds to support the purchase of films on DVD that are free for rental to local residents and University members. 2. The institution s educational responsibilities take primacy over other purposes, such as generating financial returns for investors, contributing to a related or parent organization, or supporting external interests. Argument: University of Detroit Mercy is a private, non-profit corporation with an independent governing Board of Trustees and financial structure. As a Catholic institution sponsored by the Religious Sisters of Mercy and the Society of Jesus (Jesuits), UDM is accountable to these bodies relative to its faithfulness to its mission as a university. As such, the University has no financial obligations to investors, nor is it beholden to any special interest group or parent organization. The primary purpose of University of Detroit Mercy is as an academic institution. 3. The institution engages with its identified external constituencies and communities of interest and responds to their needs as its mission and capacity allow. Argument: University of Detroit Mercy not only engages and meets the needs of various external constituencies and communities of interest, but views doing so as central to its mission. The University works closely with several external constituencies including, but not limited to, the civic neighborhood, the City of Detroit, regional and state industry and foundations, state government, local high schools, local community colleges and universities, state, national and international collaborations. Civic Neighborhood UDM has been a leader in the Livernois Streetscape Enhancement Project, completing Phase I in mid This public private partnership between UDM, foundations and city and state government has given impetus to the University s involvement in the establishment of a new economic development organization focused on neighborhoods in the Livernois-McNichols area where the University s McNichols Campus is located. In addition, UDM has led a pop-up storefront initiative on Livernois that was well-received by the community and small business owners. 21

University of Detroit Mercy - Assurance Argument May, P a g e UDM s Campus Kitchen is a student-run campus organization that uses existing resources to meet hunger and nutritional needs in the community, which is among the most serious in the nation. Students deliver approximately 70 meals per week in the neighborhoods immediately surrounding campus making a significant impact on the region s challenges related to hunger and food access. Several faculty and administrators serve on academic and professional boards and are actively involved with many civic organizations and commissions designed to positively influence the city and the region. These include the Michigan M-1 Rail, Detroit Future Cities, and Leadership Detroit projects. Other Direct Service Activities in the City of Detroit In addition to the University s clinics that provide continuous direct services to the community, UDM hosts ongoing community service initiatives and specific service-learning activities. UDM provides several of these service initiatives directly in the city of Detroit including Service in the City, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Service Day, and the Sandwich Bus. UDM launched Service in the City in February 2014 to encourage UDM students to participate in community outreach initiatives near campus. The formalized eight-week program enables University Ministry staff and students to engage in neighborhood clean-ups, urban gardening and boarding up abandoned homes. Annually, approximately 100 UDM students participate in the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Service Day. A variety of projects that respond directly to the needs of community members are conducted in neighborhoods near the McNichols Campus. The Sandwich Bus project feeds the hungry and homeless in Detroit. Sponsored by student organizations and athletics teams, students make and distribute bagged lunches on Saturdays during the school year. School of Architecture s Detroit Collaborative Design Center faculty and staff worked directly with a host of community officials and contributed significantly to the development of the 2012 Detroit Future City Strategic Framework Plan. School of Dentistry faculty and students conduct oral cancer screenings and provide oral health education to students and adults. Industry/Foundation Partnerships The Ford Community Corps Partnerships (FCCP) program supported by the Ford Motor Company Fund with a grant to UDM s Institute for Leadership and Service was established in FCCP student-faculty-agency projects include legal assistance for low-income 22
