4 President s Letter WWhile serving as interim president during the academic year, I was often reminded of my tenure as president in the 1960s. When I first arrived in 1963, the university was searching for a way to expand its campus. Over the next few years, we doubled the size of the campus and its student body. Now, AUC is entering a new phase of its growth, not so much in numbers of students as in the quality of the facilities and support each student and faculty member will enjoy. With the move of the campus to New Cairo, AUC will undoubtedly be altered; yet, as I look back over the past 40 years, the essence of AUC remains unchanged an international institution providing American-style education tailored to, and inspired by, its location and the people it serves. In the realm of learning, it brings together the East and the West in a common enterprise. Last year was a time of transition of leadership; nevertheless, progress went on for the university. In February, AUC s late President Emeritus John Gerhart, an exceptional leader who has left behind a legacy of optimism and inspiration, laid the cornerstone of the new campus with Egypt s First Lady Suzanne Mubarak 77, 82. Simultaneously, the university officially kicked off its comprehensive capital campaign, which will raise the funds for scholarships, fellowships and, of course, its new campus, needed to underpin the high-quality education AUC provides its students. Throughout the year, as we conducted our search for a new president, we added three endowed professorships, bringing leading faculty from around the world to teach at AUC in the fields of Coptic studies, comparative religion and international business; and we continued to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas through distinguished visiting professors and invited guest speakers that included Boutros Boutros-Ghali, the late Edward Said, James Zogby, Mohamed Hassanein Heikal and Hanan Ashrawi. Despite the war, and sometimes because of it, the campus was a lively place, challenging students and faculty to face the enormous issues confronting us on all sides. We were also successful in identifying a unique individual as our next president. David Arnold most recently served as executive vice president of the Institute of International Education, one of the world s largest non-profit international educational exchange organizations. He also has had more than a decade of experience with the Ford Foundation. Along with the other members of the Board of Trustees, I am confident that his able and mature leadership will guide a stronger AUC into its new state-of-the-art campus. Thomas A. 5 Chairman s Letter The challenges to AUC this year have been formidable. So have been its achievements. The world situation has put AUC under stress, with many of its supporters questioning certain US policies. Nevertheless, our students, faculty and the broader Egyptian community recognize the importance of AUC s role in Egypt. We remain committed to Egypt, to our liberal values and to playing a proactive part in the country s continuing development. In February, Egypt s First Lady Suzanne Mubarak 77, 82 laid the cornerstone at the site of our new state-of-the-art campus. Fundraising for this project continues. We raised over $60 million and, with your continuing generosity, will reach our $100 million goal. After a diligent search involving more than 100 potential candidates, the trustees chose David Arnold as AUC s 10th president. Since taking office, his whirlwind pace has been exemplary. I am convinced that we made an inspired choice in David, not least because of his wife, Sherry, whose active support of his mission is crucial to its success. David succeeded Tom Bartlett, who stood in as interim president for a year, assisted by his indispensable Molly, reprising with vigor his previous stint as president from 1963 to We are deeply grateful to Tom and Molly for their energetic and successful tour of duty. Presidential succession was made necessary by the decision of John Gerhart, our great former president, to step down from his position to fight an ultimately losing battle with cancer. Until the last, as president emeritus, John worked in an advisory and fundraising capacity. Thanks in large part to his efforts, we will achieve his dream of a world-class university. Since my last report, we lost our long-time trustee, Mimi Thorne Gilpatrick. Mimi was the wife of our former chairman, Landon Thorne. In days when AUC was fragile, Landon held the university together, laying the foundations for its greatness. Mimi was always a dedicated supporter and her effervescence will be missed. We elected two new trustees: Ken Bacon and Richard Bartlett. Both are sons of distinguished advisory trustees, and both merit election in their own right. Ken was a Wall Street Journal journalist for many years, before joining the US Department of Defense during the Clinton years as press spokesman. He is now president of Refugees International in Washington. Richard is a New York based venture capitalist, a Yale law school graduate and former Supreme Court clerk. Events this year make even clearer AUC s importance as a cultural bridge between the United States and Egypt. With your support, we will continue to play that vital role. Paul B. 7 LEADING TOMORROW President David Arnold shares his vision of AUC s future Why did you decide to join AUC? From what I knew of AUC s history and my own observations, I recognized its uniqueness and the fact that it has an indispensable role in building US-Egyptian relations. Additionally, AUC plays a pivotal role in providing graduates who go on to become leaders in their communities, the country and the region. As we look to the future, it is clear that AUC s mission and message are needed more urgently now than ever before. I view the AUC presidency as an extraordinary opportunity to make a valuable contribution to an institution that I believe in. It is an honor to be part of AUC s future, and I am confident that together with the AUC community we will achieve great things. What are your top priorities in moving forward? There are three main areas that I will focus on. The first is to get us to the new campus on time and within budget. The second is to complete the comprehensive capital campaign that will not only raise funds for the new campus, but also for scholarships, fellowships, professorships, library support and faculty development. My third objective, which I like to think of as an agenda for excellence, is an integrated set of goals that include the academic integrity initiative, providing a community service component as a part of every student s experience, as well as continuing to strengthen the quality of faculty and the university s professional programs. What do you see as AUC s specific strengths? We are the only American university in the Middle East that is accredited in the United States by the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. Additionally, several of our programs, including both computer science and engineering, are the only ones accredited outside the United States by the Computer Science Accreditation Board and the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology. AUC, with representatives from more than 90 different countries, is also home to a blend of cultures that undoubtedly adds to the richness of each student s experience. Many of our international students select AUC as a top destination to study Arabic through the Arabic Language Institute or the Center for Arabic Study Abroad, a consortium of US universities that provide advanced Arabic instruction for American students. Finally, the wide range of extracurricular activities, community service clubs and distinguished speakers on campus help students develop a keener understanding of regional and global issues, coupled with critical thinking skills. What are the challenges ahead? One of the most important challenges AUC faces is raising the funds it needs to ensure the superior quality of education it delivers to the region. The most visible need for these funds is the new campus, which will give students educational facilities unparalleled in the region and at par with some of the best institutions around the world. The new campus, however, is only one part of the equation. The quality of an AUC education will depend, like it always has, on the strength of its academic programs, the merit of its exceptional faculty and the wide range of activities it offers. Another important area where funds are needed is scholarships and fellowships, which help make an AUC education more accessible. The university also faces increased competition locally and regionally. Competition, I believe, will help us to concentrate on our strengths and improve our weaknesses so that we can make sure AUC reaches its full potential. To that end, we have to look at the next few years as a window of opportunity to focus our energy on how to improve and excel. 5

8 BRIDGING MINDS Dialoguing initiative promotes cross-cultural understanding between East and West 6

9 AAmid mounting international tensions, especially in the Middle East region, cultural exchange has increasingly become the window through which each side can understand the other, as a first step to resolving conflict. Firmly rooted in the Middle East with strong ties to the United States, AUC is an ideal environment for fostering cross-cultural exploration. In the aftermath of 9/11, AUC in partnership with New York University held for the first time a videoconference series that opened the lines of communication between students in Cairo and their counterparts in the United States. Last year, the initial seed planted by that first videoconference began to bear fruit, with AUC s launch of a dialoguing initiative designed to create an opportunity for students on opposite sides of the world to engage in one conversation. This initiative has now grown to encompass a series of videoconferences, listserves, groups and a selection of courses including a 12-day intensive political science course that brought together students from AUC, the University of Washington and the American University of Beirut (AUB). Gathered in Tochni, a small village in Cyprus, the students explored the commonalities and divergences in Arab and American identities, clash of civilizations, Orientalism, Occidentalism, Islam and the West and a discourse on human rights. Dina Khalifa 03 returned with an entirely changed perspective. I used to be very skeptical about things like embracing differences, accepting the other and things of this sort, but I came to learn that these phrases have a lot of truth in them. This experience simply taught me that if we just see the human side of one another, wars and hatred would not be the dominating characteristics of our world. Adib Samara, a senior political science student from AUB, felt that the trip only strengthened his belief in the importance of cultural exchange. We were all in a small village in the middle of nowhere, without televisions and radios. We became villagers, all equal, all on the same wavelength. It is when I woke up one morning to cut watermelon and peel figs that I realized that if all mankind was subject to the same environment and had nothing to do but resort to dialogue with one another, everyone would realize how similar we all are, said Samara. Alison Ensminger, a University of Washington student, said that the experience humanized the region. The program made things personal. Now when I hear someone say something negative or derogatory about Arabs or Palestinians, it is not a nameless, faceless group I think of, but my friends. I think of Haya, Asmaa, Alaa, Ghassan, Adib, Omar or anyone from the program and how they don t fit whatever was just uttered. 10 CROSSING CULTURES International students explore Egypt and the Middle East Each year, AUC welcomes more than 200 studyabroad students representing nearly 90 countries from around the world, making it a prime location for cultural exchange. Seeking to learn Arabic, gain insight into the Middle East or study Egyptology, political science and Islamic studies, students choose AUC as their portal to the Middle East. Timothy Reuter, a Middle East studies graduate student from Johns Hopkins University, received a one-year grant to study Arabic at AUC. I think the number of people in the United States who claim to be specialists on the Middle East and cannot speak Arabic is really shameful, he said. Hopefully, by coming here, I can avoid that trap. Reuter, a student at AUC s Arabic Language Institute, considers Cairo an incredibly dynamic and exciting place to live. As the name mother of the world suggests, the city is big enough that you can really see as much or as little as you want here. For Morten Langsholdt from the University of Bergin in Norway, the recent escalation in political conflict spurred his decision to travel to the Middle East. It s the right time to be in Egypt, to learn about this part of the world and how regional events play out, he said. Langsholdt selected AUC because of its broad course offerings. AUC was actually the only institution I considered due to its reputation of academic excellence in the region. Reflecting on his study-abroad experience, 8

11 Home to the Center for Arabic Studies Abroad (CASA), AUC provides intensive advanced Arabic language training for American graduate and undergraduate students. CASA represents a consortium of 23 American colleges and universities Langsholdt has found that living in another country certainly does something to you. You learn about another culture and also a lot about your own. Constantly meeting new people with different backgrounds makes you rethink what kind of a person you are and how you want to be perceived and you act accordingly. Niclas Von Bernstorff, a native of Germany, has also discovered valuable lessons through his study-abroad experience in Egypt. I learned a lot about trust, honor, politeness and attitude that no guidebook could come close to describing, said Von Bernstorff, who developed an interest in Egyptology at the age of 14. Since I wanted to increase my business skills, start studying Arabic, get to know the Islamic culture and satisfy my great interest in Egyptology, choosing AUC was like killing a few birds with one stone, he said. Jean Druel, a student in the Teaching Arabic as a Foreign Language graduate program, came to AUC from France to study Arabic. I am very impressed by my teachers high pedagogical experience, which is invaluable in teaching Arabic, since few written materials exist so far, he said. As a Frenchman, explained Druel, I feel very close to Arabs, not only politically but also culturally and in the way of thinking. When I go back to France, I will tell my friends not only about AUC s high academic standards, but also about how they will feel at home with fellow Egyptians. Friendship is always the answer; we just need to reach out to one another and bridge the gaps between us. 9

12 W Who would imagine being thrown into one room with Shimon Perez, Ehud Barak, Richard Myers, Wesley Clarke and Hillary Clinton and have the opportunity to chit-chat with them over a drink? It was quite overwhelming. By the end of it, I realized that this was really what you would call a once-in-a-lifetime experience. This is how Jasmine Moussa 03 described her participation in the 42nd annual International Achievement Summit held in Washington, D.C. last year. Moussa and Mohamed Helal 02, both graduate students in AUC s international human rights law program, were the only representatives from the Arab world to take part in the prestigious event. The five-day summit brought 200 top graduate students from 44 countries worldwide to meet with 50 eminent international achievers from all walks of life, including US senators, US Supreme Court justices, Nobel laureates, Pulitzer prize winners, scientists, anthropologists, philanthropists, film directors and political figures. Each day, the prominent leaders would give short speeches on topics in their respective fields, after which the floor was opened for students questions. We had the opportunity to ask questions and to mingle face-to-face with them, said Helal. The magnitude of exposure was unbelievable! It was the greatest learning experience I ever had. Being the only representatives of the region, Helal and Moussa welcomed the opportunity to counter misperceptions and were frequently asked about issues such as democracy in the Arab world, the rights of women in Islam, the Israeli- Palestinian crisis and the war in Iraq. 13 Moussa. Much to our surprise, the other students and participants were highly appreciative of our opinions and applauded us enthusiastically. At the end, the organizers assured us they would invite more students from the Arab world next year, and possibly some Arab speakers. Presenting one s point of view forcefully and politely resonates well among other people, as Helal came to learn. On the first day of the summit, he calmly but firmly confronted US Secretary of State Colin Powell on the legality of the war in Iraq. That earned him coverage in The Washington Post, which described Helal s manner of questioning as polite. The most important lesson I ve learned from the summit is that the only way to shatter International human rights law students Jasmine Moussa and Mohamed Helal challenge stereotypes and counter misperceptions about the Arab world stereotypes and to make people accept and respect you is to listen attentively to their viewpoints and to convey your own viewpoint in a respectful and civilized manner, said Helal. We need to establish networks and connections with people around the world in all facets of life. Building the bridge is easy, but needs a wellorganized, serious effort to reach out and communicate with the other. 11

14 EMPOWERING THE FUTURE Scholarships and fellowships expand access to an AUC education Public School Scholarships It is 6 a.m. and 17-yearold Ahmed Saad settles into his usual chair in the train s last compartment and watches from the window as his hometown of Zagazig disappears from view. The two-hour journey to AUC marks the beginning of a typical Akef El Maghraby weekday for Saad. A student at the English Language Institute and the first recipient of the Akef El Maghraby Public School Scholarship, Saad has ambitions of becoming a well-known physicist and university professor. That is why I enrolled at AUC, he said smiling. AUC s strong reputation of academic excellence makes it a dream for those who want to advance and move forward quickly in their career. The Akef El Maghraby scholarship is among the many public school scholarships at AUC that have made it possible for students like Saad to achieve Ahmed Saad, the first Akef El Maghraby scholarship recipient, is on his way to realizing his dream of becoming a physicist their goals. Established in 1990, the Public School Scholarship Fund (PSSF) grants full scholarships each year to 15 of Egypt s most outstanding Arabic public school students. The PSSF is supported through the contributions of corporations, as well as gifts from individuals. Since its creation, 56 students have graduated under the PSSF, many of them among AUC s top-ranking students. AUC s late President Emeritus John Gerhart was a strong believer in the PSSF as a means of granting access to an AUC education to a more diverse pool of students. Personally establishing the John Gerhart Public School Scholarship Fund, Gerhart was of the conviction that the fund enabled some of Egypt s brightest students to attend AUC, improving their career choices and expanding the possibilities for their future. Paying tribute to Gerhart and his profound belief in the role of education, the John and Gail Gerhart Fund has been established as a lasting legacy at AUC. Among the contributors to the PSSF last year was Akef El Maghraby, a distinguished ophthalmologist 12

15 Heba Al-Araby and Riman Barakat are among the 10 graduate students who received the MBI Fellowship, which provides top Arab students with the opportunity to pursue a master s degree in their field of choice and founder and chairman of El Maghraby Eye and Ear Hospitals and Centers. El Maghraby has received numerous awards for his achievements in the medical field and for providing eye-care services and prevention programs for the poor. To El Maghraby, the scholarship fund is another way of serving the community. I am very happy to be able to share in such a noble and wonderful cause, helping top Egyptian public school students attend AUC, which will definitely help them become successful human beings and possibly future leaders, El Maghraby said. MBI Foundation Fellowships TTen fortunate students will now be able to pursue master s degrees at AUC, thanks to the newly established MBI Fellowship award. The award, which was introduced for the first time at AUC last year, is open to all Arab residents of the Middle East intending to pursue graduate Mohamad Bin Issa Al Jaber studies at AUC and covers tuition, living expenses and one semester of English language instruction. One of the first recipients of an MBI Fellowship at AUC, Doaa Gawish, a Cairo University mechanical engineering graduate, works for a management consultancy firm and decided to pursue an MBA. The fellowship, Gawish said, will help her to complete an MBA, which is the first step toward reaching her future goals. After graduating from AUC, she plans to pursue a doctorate degree and work in the area of exporting and international trade. Giving Egyptian and Arab students the chance to complete their master s at AUC is a truly wonderful gift, said Gawish. Another fellow, Abdullah Mahmoud, a computer science master s student, said that he will use his education to create a better future for the IT market in Egypt. To the person who made this fellowship possible, a thank you is not enough for the reward and satisfaction that I now have at AUC, he said. Intent on applying what she learned to benefit her community, Riman Barakat, a Palestinian student working on her master s in Middle Eastern studies, plans to return to Jerusalem to work on urban development projects at refugee camps. I am fortunate to have had the opportunity to complete my education and receive a master s, said Barakat. The least I can do is find a way to use whatever skills I ve developed to help others. Mohamad Bin Issa Al Jaber, founder of the MBI Foundation, has a particular interest in the advancement of education in the Arab world and strives to facilitate educational opportunities for budding scholars who wish to pursue graduate studies with the goal of contributing to the development of their countries and region. Education is vitally important for our region s development, said Al Jaber. It gives me great pleasure to see young Arab scholars succeed, and AUC is a great place for them to learn. An honorary fellow at the school of Oriental and African Studies in the University of London, Al Jaber is founder and chairman of MBI International and Partners, the global entity that combines his companies. He is an influential business and community leader in Europe and the Middle East with a portfolio of business interests in a wide range of commercial sectors including hotels and resorts, development, investment and the food industry. 13

The groundbreaking ceremony held in February was a monumental step forward in the project, officially marking the beginning of the construction phase. After four and a half years of hard work, the academic year saw the completion of the design development stage by an international team of architectural firms each handpicked for its 16

19 Through naming opportunities, AUC s supporters help build the new campus while becoming forever a part of the university Mansour Group Lecture Hall unique expertise in the specific element it would be designing. Cairo-based Abdel Halim-CDC, in a joint venture with Massachusetts-based Sasaki Associates Inc., served as prime architect, leading the team of world-renowned architects from Mexico, Europe, Egypt and the United States. Gerhart, credited for his spirited leadership and active role in planning for the building of the new campus, is often quoted as saying everyone has a purpose in life, and ours is to collectively build a world-class university in the Middle East. Due to be completed in the fall of 2007, the new campus, a long-time dream of the university s founders, will not only relieve the space limitations of the existing campus, but will also provide the first-rate facilities and infrastructure that are needed to expand service, educational, sports and extracurricular activities at the university. Believing in education as a precursor to development and in AUC s educational mission, Mohamed Mansour, president of the Mansour Group, is among AUC s friends and supporters. Only with well-educated people will our country move forward and succeed in a highly competitive world. In this respect, AUC students are at an advantage and should make the best out of their education, Mansour asserted. Helping AUC achieve its vision of a new campus, Mansour pledged $1 million for the construction of the Mansour Group Lecture Hall on the new campus. The Mansour Group, one of Egypt s top conglomerates spanning the automotive, banking, industrial, real estate, agribusiness and tourism sectors, is also the authorized distributor for Caterpillar. Mansour is founder of the Lead Foundation, an Egyptian non-governmental organization providing vocational training and financial assistance to the underprivileged; a member of the US- Egypt President s Council; secretary-general of the Egyptian Center for Economic Studies and former president of the American Chamber of Commerce. 17

20 Emad El Sewedy Classroom Emad El Sewedy 88, the first alumnus to name a classroom on the new campus, talks about AUC with unparalleled passion and enthusiasm. Personally, I believe AUC has given me a lot, not just what s in the books, but in the way we were treated as students. That made a major impact on my personality. When he s not at work or windsurfing in the Red Sea, El Sewedy enjoys spending time with his three children. Someday, I plan to send them to AUC to receive the quality education that I received, he said. Crediting AUC with playing a role in making him the person he is today, a successful CEO, El Sewedy said, We were told never to give up and that anything is possible. This contribution to the new campus is just a way that I can give something back to a place that has been instrumental in my life. It is because of this, El Sewedy explained, that he went into a field that no one had for years dared to enter. For a long time there was only one government company manufacturing electrometers in Egypt and people told me that it was impossible to compete with them. I disagreed and in 2001 we had a 60 percent market share! The Emad El Sewedy classroom will be part of the School of Sciences and Engineering, from which he graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering. A New Campus Family Hassan Rifaat 80 and his wife Inas Ragai 81 initially met and fell in love on AUC s downtown campus when they were studying 18

21 mechanical engineering. More than 20 years later, their family will have a place on the new campus. Showing their support for AUC, Rifaat and Ragai will name a tree for each of them on the new campus, in addition to two bricks in the names of their daughters Sarah and Heba. For Rifaat, who is a regular supporter of AUC, donating to the new campus has a special meaning. Having such a grand campus has been a dream for many AUCians, so needless to say donating anything to this cause would be helping this dream come true. The naming opportunity was a chance to donate to the new campus in a way that would be remembered for years to come. It s like going to the middle of the desert and finding a slab of stone with someone's name and the date written on it, he elaborated. Having your name dedicated to something and showing that you participated in even a small way in making this campus a reality is quite exciting. Every Brick Counts Study-abroad alumna Sarah Whitson 86 spent a year studying at AUC and left with fond memories and a new perspective. AUC contributed to my life by introducing me to people who to this day are among my closest friends, by allowing me to interact and share experiences with Egyptians and Arabs from around the region and by allowing me to think of the world in an entirely different way and from a fresh perspective far from the one I had assumed was the only right one, said Whitson. It was an incredibly rich and joyful opportunity. Whitson, vice president and associate general counsel at Goldman Sachs investment firm in New York, is naming a brick on the Alumni Wall in support of the university. AUC s new campus is a very visible and positive sign of the university s growth and expansion, said Whitson. It is nice to feel that I m making a small contribution to that expansion, and the naming opportunity allows me to visibly demonstrate my support. Stressing the importance of alumni support, Whitson noted, AUC offers a unique opportunity to obtain a Western-style education without separating from the Middle East. It gives many a new lens with which to view their own societies, whether Arab or American. It is important for alumni to contribute not only their money, but their talents and skills, to help define the future of AUC and to ensure its survival as a liberal institution where ideas can be expressed freely. 19

22 TheCampaign for AUC Enhancing the educational experience now and in the future A state-of-the-art campus, leading international faculty, the latest information technology, fully equipped laboratories, a vibrant on-campus life and scholarships for students who need them are all part of the high cost associated with delivering a premium education. Unwilling to compromise quality, AUC officially launched its comprehensive capital campaign to raise the funds it needs to continue providing a superior educational experience. As a private non-profit organization, AUC must generate a significant portion of its income. With tuition covering roughly half of its operating revenues, AUC has to look to its friends and supporters to fill the gap between tuition revenues and the cost of a quality education. The campaign directly impacts AUC now and in the future. With a target of raising $100 million of the $300 million it will take to construct the new campus, contributions will help build AUC s future. The many naming opportunities on the new campus from the library, student housing or lecture halls to benches, trees and bricks allow university supporters at all giving levels to share in building AUC s future and place their name on its new campus. At the same time, the campaign equally enhances the educational experience of today s students. AUC s Annual Fund is specifically geared toward fundraising for the university s current activities to establish student scholarships, financial aid, student activities, faculty development, library support, as well as classrooms and labs. Last year, thanks to the continuing support of AUC s alumni, donors and friends, the campaign achieved great results. On the new campus, more than 130 items were named, a reflection of the AUC community s support for the project. Additionally, making the university more accessible to a greater number of students, new public school scholarships were created. Scholarships for women and graduate students of Arab origin were also added, further expanding the reach of an AUC education. 20

24 Finance After two years of reporting successively lower values, the university s net assets rose from $468 million to $507 million during the fiscal year ending August 31, Following a recovery in US stock markets that began in the spring, the market value of endowment assets increased by 6.2 percent from $353 million to $375 million. For a second year in a row, the Egyptian pound has continued to lose substantial ground against the dollar, dropping by approximately 25 percent during the 12-month period under review. This has had a negative impact on the dollarequivalent value of the pound component of the university s endowments and accounts, with total endowment resources still not recovered to the levels reached more than three years ago. Current income from endowments also continues to decline from $14 million in FY 2002 to $11.4 in FY 2003 reflecting both the low interest rate environment and a smaller contribution from pound-denominated assets. Despite currency losses, operating results exceeded budget expectations, with strong enrollment figures in degree programs resulting in tuition income rising from $38.5 million to $40.5 million, despite the average amount of tuition collected per student having declined in dollarequivalent terms. In the light of increasingly strong evidence that Egyptian families are finding it difficult to plan financially when tuition is pegged to a volatile dollar/pound exchange rate, the decision was reached earlier this year to set tuition in pounds for qualifying students resident in Egypt. This should remove an important element of uncertainty in the cost of an AUC education. Despite competition and a fragile local economy, the university s adult education programs made further progress in FY 2003, although the declining value of the pound resulted in lower dollarequivalent revenues, which retreated from $6.2 million to $5.2 million. Margins came under renewed pressure because of the relatively high component of fixed dollar costs. The comprehensive capital campaign continued to raise vital funds for the construction of AUC s new campus. Capital donations were only marginally beneath the record level of $14.4 million recorded in FY With the present focus on capital donations, it will be a major challenge to ensure that the university continues to receive an adequate level of giving for current operational support. The new campus project is now nearing the end of the design phase, and building construction is anticipated to begin in the late spring or early summer of Expenditures incurred during FY 2003 amounted to $12.5 million, and cumulative expenditure from inception of the project through August 2003 has reached $36.2 million. Expenditure outflows will increase substantially when the construction phase begins, and the university is fortunate indeed to have secured a major construction grant from USAID in the fall of This grant, coupled with a long-term credit facility secured from Mellon Bank NA, will assure the financing of the project, enabling the university to accelerate expenditures to the extent needed to combat inflationary cost increases in materials and equipment required in the construction process. The start of the new academic year has been satisfactory, but the university continues to face the challenges of intensifying competition, further devaluation of the pound against the dollar, and an economy where the pace of inflation is outstripping increases in earnings and many families are finding it progressively harder to fund the cost of an AUC education for their children. 44 OFFICE OF SPONSORED PROGRAMS The Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) reports that AUC received $3.9 million from outside sponsors for FY 2002/2003 in support of research, training and public service projects. OSP represents the university in its dealings with governments, foundations and companies that sponsor projects, and is responsible for submitting all project proposals. OSP helps the faculty write proposals, identifies potential funding sources, negotiates the terms of grants and contracts, and ensures that AUC complies with those terms.
