Whitley s own By RACHAEL ROSFELD COLUMBIA CIY 2017 marks the 100th anniversary of America s involvement in World War I and, of course, Whitley County saw many of its citizens involved. Whitley County Historical Museum has been hard at work creating an official record of all those veterans who served in the First World War, and creators soon hope to have a book ready for the public and for readers to be introduced to Whitley County s Veterans. Each Veteran has his own story to tell and experiences recalled. One such Veteran from Whitley County featured in the book is Merritte Ireland, who became the longest serving Surgeon General of the United States Army. Ireland was born to Martin and Sarah Ireland on May 30, He graduated from Columbia City in 1888 before attending De- troit Medical College and interning at St. Mary s Hospital in Detroit. He continued his education at Jefferson College in Philadelphia. Ireland began his military career in May 1891 as a First Lieutenant in the medical corps. He was first stationed at Jefferson barracks in Missouri before moving to Fort Apache, Ariz. It was while he was stationed there that he met and married Elizabeth Liggett in Soon after he was transferred to Fort Riley, Kan. and then to Fort Stanton in New Mexico, where he was stationed until He was transferred to Presidio, where he met General John BlackJack Pershing, who would later become a faithful friend and supporter. From Ireland was stationed in Manila as a supply officer during the Spanish-American War. After serving for a time there, he was ordered to Washington to serve until 1913 and returned to COLUMBIA CIY One man was sentenced for charges of possession of child pornography and another pled guilty to criminal recklessness and intimidation Monday morning in Whitley Circuit Court. Christopher Davidsen, 44, of Columbia City, was arrested in July this year after a four- month investigation by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Davidsen Children and the Indiana State Police. He was sentenced to six years and ordered to serve two of those years in the Indiana Department of Corrections and the last four on probation supervision. During the sentencing hearing, defense attorney Anthony Churchward argued several factors in the case for Circuit Court Judge Matthew Rentschler to consider as potential mitigating circumstances. first was that at 44 years old Davidsen had no prior convictions or criminal history. Other factors were that Davidsen was college edu- cated, had maintained employment, had support of his family, was seeking treatment and that he had shown remorse. Chief Deputy Prosecutor Cory Spreen countered that the original charges were six in total, five of which had been aggravated due to the content and that each image was a separate download, noting that this meant the incident was not an accident but intentional. He also shared an interview Davidsen gave for the Pre-Sentence Investigation (PSI) Report in which he admitted he put the images of children on a computer flash drive to share. While Churchward highlighted that the PSI indicated Davidsen was low-risk to re-offend, Spreen argued if this were true due to the statement made by Davidsen. In his defense, Davidsen told the court that he understood his actions, had strong family support and was seeking therapy. Before sentencing him, Judge Rentschler questioned if he had accepted full responsibility prior to the sentencing hearing based on Davidsen s comments in the PSI. He added that factors he was considering were the Circuit Court, Page A3 Columbia City s Maj. Gen. Merritte Ireland was longest serving U.S. Surgeon General Maj. Gen. Merritte Ireland 1918 Manila. In 1918, Ireland was promoted to Brigadier General and appointed as the Chief Surgeon of the American Expeditionary Forces. It was Gen. Pershing who recommended Ireland for the position of surgeon-general after Major General William Gorgas was preparing to retire, and by October of 1918, Major General Ireland was appointed. He would serve the army for 40 years before retiring in May of Four U.S. presidents would re-appoint him including Woodrow Wilson, Warren Harding, Calvin Coolidge and Herbert Hoover, and Ireland remains the longest to hold the position. 2 A2 News uesday, November 14, 2017 Post & Mail Increase in teen suicide, social media coincide CHICAGO (AP) An increase in suicide rates among U.S. teens occurred at the same time social media use surged and a new analysis suggests there may be a link. Suicide rates for teens rose between 2010 and 2015 after they had declined for nearly two decades, according to data from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Why the rates went up isn t known. study doesn t answer the question, but it suggests that one factor could be rising social media use. Recent teen suicides have been blamed on cyberbullying, and social media posts depicting perfect lives may be taking a toll on teens mental health, researchers say. After hours of scrolling through Instagram feeds, I just feel worse about myself because I feel left out, said Caitlin Hearty, a 17-year-old Littleton, Colorado, high school senior who helped organize an offline campaign last month after several local teen suicides. No one posts the bad things they re going through, said Chloe Schilling, also 17, who helped with the campaign, in which hundreds of teens agreed not to use the internet or social media for one month. study s authors looked at CDC suicide reports from and results of two surveys given to U.S. high school students to measure attitudes, behaviors and interests. About half a million teens ages 13 to 18 were involved. y were asked about use of electronic devices, social media, print media, television and time spent with friends. Questions about mood included frequency of feeling hopeless and considering or attempting suicide. researchers didn t examine circumstances surrounding individual suicides. Dr. Christine Moutier, chief medical officer at the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, said the study provides weak evidence for a popular theory and that many factors influence teen suicide. study was published uesday in the journal Clinical Psychological Science. Data highlighted in the study include: eens use of electronic devices including smartphones for at least five hours daily more than doubled, from 8 percent in 2009 to 19 percent in se teens were 70 percent more likely to have suicidal thoughts or actions than those who reported one hour of daily use. In 2015, 36 percent of all teens reported feeling desperately sad or hopeless, or thinking about, planning or attempting suicide, up from 32 percent in For girls, the rates were higher 45 percent in 2015 versus 40 percent in In 2009, 58% of 12th grade girls used social media every day or nearly every day; by 2015, 87% used social media every day or nearly every day. News GOP tax overhaul bill to get push from President WASHINGON (AP) As Republicans stake their claim to middle-class rescue in tax cut legislation deemed to carry tax hikes for millions, President Donald rump plans an in-person appeal to lawmakers as the proposal faces a crucial vote in the House. Underscoring the sharp political stakes for rump, who lacks a major legislative achievement after nearly 10 months in office, rump will meet with House Republicans on hursday ahead of an expected vote on the tax overhaul legislation. Circuit Court, from A1 Promoted as needed relief for the middle class, the House and Senate bills would deeply cut corporate taxes, double the standard deduction used by most Americans, and limit or repeal completely the federal deduction for state and local property, income and sales taxes. Republican leaders in Congress view passage of the first major tax revamp in 30 years as imperative for the GOP to preserve its majorities in next year s elections. rump s planned pitch on Capitol Hill, after returning from his Weinstein Effect goes global as powerful men being confronted Asia trip, was disclosed by a White House official who wasn t authorized to discuss publicly the president s schedule and spoke on condition of anonymity. In the meantime, rump tweeted into the debate Monday by urging Republican leaders to get more aggressive in the tax legislation. He called for a steeper tax cut for wealthy Americans and the addition of a contentious health care change to the already complex mix. At the same time, a nonpartisan analysis of the Senate version of the tax overhaul legislation showed HOLLYWOOD, Calif. (AP) sexual harassment and assault allegations against Harvey Weinstein that rocked Hollywood and sparked a flurry of allegations in other American industries, as well as the political arena, are reaching far beyond U.S. borders. Emboldened by the women, and men, who have spoken up, the Weinstein Effect is rippling across the globe. Nearly half of the #metoo mentions since the movement has been launched have come from outside the U.S., and decades-old accusations have led to the downfall of some of those countries most powerful men. Here s a look at where the fallout and the falls have reverberated most strongly, from the United Kingdom and Israel to India and Peru. UNIED KINGDOM In the immediate aftermath of the Harvey Weinstein revelations, the British government led by Prime Minister resa May has been rocked by a series of harassment allegations that have led to one high-level resignation that of Defense Secretary Michael Fallon and threatened the position of First Secretary of State Damian Green, a vital ally of the prime minister. accusations have come from parliamentary researchers, staff and journalists. Some have said the political parties involved failed to take action and actively discouraged victims from going to police. Claims range from unwanted touching a hand placed on a journalist s knee, for example to allegations of rape. At least one case involving a legislator has been referred to police for possible prosecution, with the details kept private. Green, the prime minister s chief aide and a de facto deputy prime minister, was accused by a young Conservative Party activist of inappropriate touching and text messages and a former senior policeman says extreme pornography was found on a computer in Green s office in 2008 which Green denies and calls a political smear. scandal has spread beyond Cabinet ranks to snare a number of members of Parliament and also politicians in Scotland and in Wales, where Labour Party legislator Carl Sargeant is believed to have taken his own life after harassment allegations cost him his government post. His grieving family said he was never even told the nature of the allegations against him. prime minister and the leaders of the main opposition parties have agreed to set up a new grievance procedure for people working in Parliament to make it easier to report sexual harassment. London was also for many years a base for actor Kevin Spacey, who served as artistic director of the Old Vic theater from 2004 until allegations of sexual harassment that have surfaced in recent weeks, including some during his tenure at the Old Vic, have cast a pall over his tenure. ISRAEL floodgates opened in Israel earlier this month when, during a V panel discussion about the harassment in Hollywood, Channel 10 journalist Oshrat Kotler revealed that Israeli media mogul and International Olympic Committee member Alex Gilady had made an indecent proposal to her during a job interview 25 years ago. Haaretz columnist Neri Livneh then added that Gilady exposed himself to her during a 1999 business meeting at his home. wo other women later came forward saying Gilady had raped them. He denied the rape accusations, said he doesn t recall the Kotler incident but said Livneh s claim was mainly correct and apologized. As a result, the 74-year-old Gilady, a former sports executive at NBC, stepped down as president of the local Keshet broadcasting company he founded. IOC also said it is looking into the allegations. n veteran Israeli media personality Gabi Gazit addressed the allegations dismissively on his daily radio show, prompting Dana Weiss another prominent local V journalist to accuse him of just such behavior. Weiss said Gazit had randomly kissed her on the mouth during chance encounters in V studios. Gazit denied the accusations but three other woman have come forward with similar stories and he was forced to take leave from his show. Weinstein ripped off a band aid that covered the wounds and scars that so many women still carry in industries that are still predominantly male-led, and now that it is off I think it is time to examine and heal, Weiss told Associated Press. his is not an act of revenge, but rather an opportunity for social reform. Other women have also made claims against Haim Yavin, Israel s most famous anchor, who is now retired. A former journalist said he forcefully laid upon her once and a makeup artist said he touched her inappropriately. Yavin has not responded. Weiss called it an uncomfortable but healthy conversation to be having in a society that understands that the rules of the game have changed. It s not the first time Israel has confronted sexual assault of the powerful toward women. A former president, Moshe Katsav, was sentenced and jailed for rape. 4 A4 uesday, November 14, 2017 Harassment, from A3 titlement and that is going to take years to change. She said there has been increased conversation about the problem in recent years but that sexual harassment continues and authorities, including the police, often deliberately impede sexual assault investigations. Grover said since the Weinstein allegations there has been a pattern of women in other countries feeling empowered to speak up because society is now condemning such behavior. But I don t see that happening in India, and that is worrying, she said. It s a country in which rape victims don t get justice and society is often an accomplice. After the Weinstein allegations, a crowd-sourced list of more than 60 Indian academics accused of harassment appeared online but was later taken down. Grover was among several feminists who argued the list was unfair because it didn t give adequate context or explanation for the anonymous allegations. Some students argued that Grover and other feminists were protecting the status quo. While the #Meoo hashtag did trend in India after the Weinstein allegations, experts say it tends to be a small, educated minority who drive such trends in the vast and populous nation. IALY In Italy, the Weinstein scandal has been front-page news ever since it broke because Italian actress Asia Argento was one of the main, named accusers in an expose by New Yorker. Her accusation of rape generated a hostile backlash at home, with Italian newspaper editorials and commentary accusing her of creating trouble. But the scandal has taken on new life with accusations by 10 women that an Italian television and film director, Fausto Brizzi, molested them. An investigative V show reported initial accusations without naming the director last month, but in a follow-up report Sunday named Brizzi. He has strenuously denied having nonconsensual sex. On uesday, the Italian unit of Warner Bros. suspended all future new work with Brizzi, but confirmed the Dec. 14 opening in Italy of his latest film, Poor But Rich. Warner Bros. said it took seriously all accusations of harassment and was committed to making its workplaces safe, but said it wouldn t be fair to negate the work of hundreds of people by canceling the release. FRANCE France is reeling from Weinstein and other revelations, but conflicted about how to respond. French women are denouncing alleged abusers with unprecedented openness, on social networks and in police stations around the country, where reports of rape, harassment and other abuse are on the rise. An online campaign under the hashtag #balancetonporc ( squeal on your pig ) kicked off in French even before the #metoo campaign began and went viral globally. But no powerful figures in France have lost their jobs or reputations and there s been no nationwide clamor for heads to roll. French critics have warned against an American-style backlash that could demonize romance. News Wineries are eager to make up losses after Calif. wildfires NAPA, Calif. (AP) A month after deadly wildfires swept through California s famed wine country, hot-air balloons are floating again over Napa Valley vineyards splashed with fall colors. On the heels of the disaster, a new winery is opening, keeping the name it chose some time ago: Ashes and Diamonds. fires had only a minimal effect on the area s wineries, according to the Wine Institute, an advocacy and policy group. Of the 1,200 wineries in Sonoma, Napa and Mendocino, about 10 were destroyed or heavily damaged, and 90 percent of this year s harvest already was complete, the institute said. Most vineyards were spared due to their high moisture content, and some even helped save surrounding structures by acting as fire breaks. But many operators are now grappling with other long-term effects from the fires that killed 43 people and wiped out 8,900 buildings: making up for losses from being closed at the busiest time of year, assessing the impact of smoke and other environmental damage on this year s vintage, and persuading tourists to return after weeks of devastating news coverage. One of the most graphic scenes of destruction to emerge during the fires was that of the Signorello Estate winery engulfed in flames. Lost in the fire was the Napa winery s signature stone hospitality building. A kitchen, corporate offices, a wine lab and the home of owner Ray Signorello Jr. also were destroyed. We lost all our servers, systems, computers, the things we used to do business, Signorello said. But he plans to rebuild and is trying to get people back to work. At Cardinale Winery in Oakville, where just one Cabernet Sauvignon vintage is made from prized mountain appellations each year, winemaker Chris Carpenter is eyeing the grapes cautiously. He was a rare winemaker willing to say the fires effects would be felt for years, noting there also will be environmental issues to contend with. Only 50 percent of Cardinale s harvest was finished when the fires erupted, and he s worried about smoke tainting what remains. All the questions are unknown right now, and we hope to have a handle on that after fermentation, Carpenter said. Carpenter said he had a chance to try some smoketainted wines in 2008, and they were not very pleasant - like a bacon-flavored wine. If we sense any of that, we won t bottle, he said. hings already appeared to be returning to normal for guests at Sonoma s Gundlach Bundschu winery, where dozens of tourists soaked up the sun outside the tasting room a few weeks after the fires. Nearby blackened hills were the only visible reminder of what had occurred.. Post & Mail Sessions facing Congress amid new Russia probe WASHINGON (AP) Attorney General Jeff Sessions returns to Capitol Hill on uesday amid growing evidence of contacts between Russians and associates of President Donald rump. And he will be bracing for an onslaught of lawmakers questions about how much he knew of that outreach during last year s White House campaign. appearance before the House Judiciary Committee follows a guilty plea from one rump campaign aide who served on a foreign policy advisory council that Sessions chaired, as well as statements from another adviser who said he d advised the then-gop Alabama senator about an upcoming trip to Russia. hose details complicate Sessions effort to downplay knowledge of the campaign s foreign contacts. Democratic lawmakers already vehemently contend the attorney general has not been forthcoming with them and have signaled that questions about the new revelations are likely to dominate what could otherwise have been a routine oversight hearing. se facts appear to contradict your sworn testimony on several occasions, Democrats from the committee said in a letter to Sessions last week. Republicans, for their part, may press Sessions on the Justice Department s handling of an investigation into Hillary Clinton s practices as well as an Obama-era uranium deal that has invited GOP scrutiny. Sessions, an early rump backer who led the foreign policy council during the campaign, has been shadowed for months by questions about his own communications with Russians and by contacts of others in the rump orbit. hat issue has been at the forefront of each of his congressional hearings even as Sessions has labored to promote the Justice Department s work and priorities, and uesday s appearance is unlikely to be an exception. At his January confirmation hearing, Sessions told Sen. Al Franken, D-Minn., that I did not have communications with the Russians during the campaign and said he was unaware of contacts between others in the campaign and Russia. Yet he recused himself in March from overseeing the Justice Department s investigation into potential coordination between the rump campaign and the Kremlin after acknowledging two previously undisclosed encounters with Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak. He struck a similar note before the Senate Judiciary Committee last month, when he denied knowledge of communications between Russians and rump campaign officials. I did not and I m not aware of anyone else that did, and I don t believe it happened, Sessions said under questioning, again from Franken. 927 W. INDIANAPOLIS (AP) primary forensics lab for Indiana has seen a sharp increase in drug cases during the past decade, which officials has been driven in part by the state s opioid crisis. Indiana State Police Laboratory oversees about 20,000 cases each year from all but one of the state s 92 counties, Indianapolis Star reported. Of those cases, about 14,000 involve drug substances, including powders, pills and plants. lab has seen a steady increase in drug cases in recent years. It handled nearly 9,400 such cases in By 2016, the number had increased to more than 12,100 cases, and the lab s drug unit is expected to handle more than 14,500 cases this year. We re at an all-time high this year, said Elizabeth Griffin, supervisor of the drug unit. Right now we re receiving more cases than we re capable of processing, added Eric Lawrence, who oversees scientists at the lab. We need more analysts and to get more analysts we need more space. Lawrence said Indiana s opioid crisis has introduced new risks for scientists, including fentanyl, a drug that can overdose an individual through accidental contact. I have 40 years in this business, and this is the first drug that I have seen that has anything close to this lethality, Lawrence said. his is a game changer. o prevent such deaths at the lab, new operating procedures have been put into effect. (AP) hank you. wo simple words that can go a very long way. And last week students at Elkhart Community Schools took some time out of their school day to express their gratitude by writing a handwritten thank you note to a teacher or staff member who has made a positive impact on their lives. cards were provided by the Elkhart Education Foundation as part of its 12 Days of Giving Campaign, which is a focused fundraising time for EEF programs and an opportunity to cultivate an attitude of gratitude across the district, said EEF Executive Director Ashley Molyneaux. Our students are impacted by a number of people on a daily basis, whether it s the cafeteria worker, the custodian, past or present teachers or their bus driver, Molyneaux said. We re trying to teach that culture of attitude that sometimes it s important to sit down and say thank you or let someone know they made an impact on your life because it could really make their day. Students at Elkhart Central High School wrote their thank you letters hursday morning during their advisory period. Some students had a hard time choosing just one staff member, so they wrote to multiple. hat was the case for students Aaron Coddington and Daniel Nunez, who both said two teachers come to mind as they reflected on who had the strongest impact on their lives at ECS: Kelly Buckley and Sheila Brown. I had to write to both of them because no matter what decisions I ve made, they ve both supported me unconditionally and really helped me with real life situations and always encouraged me to do better, Coddington, a senior, said. If my grades were slipping in any of my classes, they would let me know and go out their way to help me, no matter what the subject was. Nunez, a junior, expressed the same sentiments as Coddington. Mrs. Brown and Mrs. Buckley always been with me through thick and thin whether it was a personal or academic issue, he said. When I think of people who impacted my life the most at ECS, these two women are the first that come to mind. Jonathon Miller, a freshman, praised his fifth grade teacher Mrs. Baker, who he said used a hands-on approach to teach rather than lectures. Plus, made time to help students discover what their personal interests were. She taught us our core classes, but also made time to help us explore what we thought we were passionate about, said Miller, who has an interest in body building. She always told us that whatever we re interested Always something new and Holiday Countdown in whether it s now or two years from now, if you enjoy it, work at it, and that advice still sticks with me. Friday was the last day for students to submit a thank you note, which will be delivered to teachers and staff throughout the district before hanksgiving Break on Nov. 21 and 22. We hope that students, teachers and administrators to model this activity of thank you note writing, said Molyneaux. Newton did his part on Monday night, throwing for 254 yards and four touchdowns and running for 95 more. Panthers piled up a franchise-record 548 yards in a rout of the Miami Dolphins. It s nice to see them have this type of breakout game, Panthers coach Ron Rivera said. (AP) Bonzie Colson s tough enough against double-teaming defenses, but Mount St. Mary s typically opted to counter the Notre Dame preseason All-American with single coverage Monday night. hat didn t work so well either. Colson recorded his 25th career double-double with 27 points and 11 rebounds, and junior teammate Rex Pflueger added his first with 13 points and 10 boards, as the No. 13-ranked Irish rolled to an victory. If they re going to play Bonzie with one guy, we re gonna keep throwing it in there, Notre Dame coach Mike Brey said. He just kept making (good) decisions with it. Efficient throughout, Colson went 11-of-15 from the field and 4-of-4 from the line. 6-foot-5 senior also recorded three blocked shots and three steals. Pflueger added five assists to his versatile line, while point guard Matt Farrell had 12 points and five assists. Irish (2-0) improved to 18-0 in home debuts under Brey despite a sometimes choppy first half that yielded a lead at the break. y are too hard on themselves sometimes, Brey said of his players. As you can see, there s frustration. I m trying to get them to move on to the next play, not worry about a missed shot or a mistake, and that s an area we need to grow, especially before we go to Maui and that atmosphere. Notre Dame blitzed the Mountaineers (0-2) to begin the second half with a 14-0 run that gave them permanent control. I loved some of the transition decisions we got early in the second half off our defense, Brey said after his team outscored Mt. St. Mary s 10-0 on the fast break for the night. We ve talked about this is a group that s going to get more steals and more deflections, so that means we re going to be out there with (number advantages). Junior Robinson, the Mount s 5-foot-5 senior guard, led the visitors with 14 points, but had just two after halftime. Freshman Bobby Planutis added 11 points and seven boards. Mount St. Mary s led with 6:23 to go in the first half, before ND went on an 11-0 run ignited by Colson s offensive-rebound slam at the 5:56 mark. Plueger added back-toback steals for baskets as part of that spurt and Notre Dame never relinquished the lead. POWER IN HE PAIN Notre Dame ruled inside, and it wasn t just Colson. Irish finished with a advantage in paint points. y also had 11 secondchance points and closed with a rebounding edge overall. We thought we could beat them up inside and throw it in there, Brey said. Carlos Beltran retires after World Series win HOUSON (AP) It took quite some time, but Carlos Beltran finally got there, winning a World Series title after 20 seasons in the majors. Now he is leaving the Houston Astros and leaving baseball, retiring after a career in which he was a nine-time All-Star and was Rookie of the Year. 40-year-old designated hitter and outfielder made the announcement Monday, 12 days after the Astros beat the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 7 of the World Series. He announced his retirement in an essay written for Players ribune website. His story touched on what finally winning a championship meant to him. I realized early on that my purpose in this game was to share knowledge with younger players and to give back to the game of baseball, he wrote. I always wanted to do that that, and be the best teammate I could possibly be. Over 20 years, I feel like I accomplished that. So whether we won or lost Game 7, I would have still been happy with my career. But it still feels nice to have a ring, he continued. Besides being named an All-Star nine times, most recently in 2016, and the 1999 AL Rookie of the Year, he won three Gold Glove and two Silver Slugger awards. (AP) Purdue s postseason margin for error now is paper thin. After Northwestern defeated the Boilermakers over the weekend, Purdue is 4-6 (2-5 Big en) and must win Saturday at Iowa and at home on Nov, 25 against Indiana to qualify for a bowl game for the first time since While the linebacker-led defense has played well all season, the offense has struggled to develop any kind of consistency. Quarterback Elijah Sindelar completed 37 of 60 passes for 376 yards and two touchdowns against Northwestern receiver Jared Sparks caught 11 passes for 130 yards but the running game finished with 22 total carries for 40 yards, led by D.J. Knox s six carries for 22 yards. Known for his high-powered offense at Western Kentucky, first-year coach Jeff Brohm has been frustrated by the lack of offensive output. On offense, it has been a struggle to find ways to move the ball, Brohm said Monday. I do think our guys are playing hard. Our runners are running hard, and our linemen are giving us as good of an effort as they can. We have to continue to improve there. In the regular season s final two games, Brohm wants his offense to start faster, build a lead and have more balance. He liked the success his passing game had in the final 30 minutes against the Wildcats. After what Iowa did to Ohio State two weeks ago, the Hawkeyes have Brohm s full and undivided attention. his is a team that if you don t come ready to play, it can be a very long day, Brohm said. game. Yeah, if I saw the turnover chain passed around (Miami s) bench like Gatorade, that was probably going to be my biggest concern. It was a big game, Kelly said. We play in a big-game atmosphere at Notre Dame but this one was a little different. A number of these kids hadn t played in a game of this magnitude since maybe the Clemson game (a loss on Oct. 3, 2015) and I don t know that there were many defensive players on the field for that. I ve got to do a better job of making sure that they re in the moment. Irish didn t force a CCHS Fall Cheerleader Awards turnover Saturday for the first time this season but surrendered 374 total yards, just under the yards that had been averaging. It was the turnovers by the offense, which managed just 109 rushing yards, 215 fewer than its average, that proved insurmountable. You ve got to protect the football and we did not do a very good job protecting the football, Kelly said. Judge, Bellinger win Rookie of the Year honors NEW YORK only major question was whether it would be unanimous and it was. Aaron Judge and Cody Bellinger are baseball s Rookies of the Year, after their record-setting home run binges left no need for any dissenting opinions. Judge led the American League with 52 homers, the most ever by a rookie. Bellinger hit 39 and had to settle for the National League s rookie record. Judge and Bellinger received every first-place vote available from the Baseball Writers Association of America. Judge became the first New York Yankees player to receive this award since Derek Jeter in Bellinger gave the Dodgers a record 18th Rookie of the Year winner. his was the first time both Rookie of the Year awards were unanimous since his season s votes were announced Monday night. 13 Fun & Advice uesday, November 14, 2017 B7 eetle Bailey i & Lois Quote of the Day... People react with bizarre behavior toward girl Dear Annie: I need your advice. In my social life and at my places of employment, I used to tell people that the man who raised me with my mom was not my biological father. At work, customers and co-workers would say unkind things to me about that. n, a few weeks later, I would get let go for no logical reason, or it would turn into a hostile work environment and I would be forced to quit. final straw came when I was leaving church and the clergyperson shook my hand goodbye and at the same time pushed me out the door. I had a DNA test done, and it turns out that my dad is my biological father. I don t feel I owe people an explanation, and even if I did, they would probably not believe me anyway. How do I handle these horrible people? Really Dad s Little Girl Dear Really Dad s Little Girl: I m thinking there must be more to the story than you ve included in your letter, because their behavior sounds bizarre. Your biology is none of their business. If you were terminated because of your parentage, you should have legal recourse. Contact an attorney. Puzzler A lie can travel half way around the world while the truth is putting on its shoes. - Mark wain Dear Annie: My wife and I are in our late 20s and have been married since we were 18. We have two wonderful children. problem I m having is dealing with my wife s mother. We recently moved to a new city so my wife could be closer to her side of the family, which was fine with me because she never really had much of a relationship with her mother growing up. We have now lived in this city for three years, and in that time, my wife s mother has never made an attempt to re-establish any type of relationship with my wife or our children, for that matter. Every time there is a family function going on, my mother-in-law does everything in her power to keep my wife from finding out about it so that our family is excluded. And whenever we host family functions, my wife s mother always has an excuse for why she won t be able to attend. In addition, my wife and I have not had one night to ourselves since we were Dear Annie in high school. We even took our firstborn on our honeymoon because we couldn t get a baby sitter. I think that is where grandparents and other family members should be involved. It s hard on my wife. We have two very well-behaved kids, and it s killing my wife that her mother won t watch our kids. I know that my wife wants to create a relationship with her mom that she never had, just as she wants our children to have a grandmother in their lives. I am so sick and tired of watching my wife reach out to her mom. Am I wrong for wanting to protect my wife from certain heartbreak? Or should I let this go and let my wife handle her mother? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Protective Husband Dear Protective Husband: Your mother-in-law sounds like a real piece of work, but there isn t much you can do about changing her attitude or behavior. You can and should continue giving your wife support and encouragement, but ultimately her relationship with her mother is between the two of them and not you. As for getting away together alone for a night or weekend, what about other members of her side of the family? If no one will help, then maybe you could consider moving closer to your side of the family. How do I get rid of them without hiring an exterminator? Love your column in the Staten Island Advance! Suzanne L., Staten Island, N.Y. Suzanne, there are some simple things you can do. First, if you can, find the nest and pour about 3 gallons of boiling water, mixed with one lemon cut into quarters (skin and all), down the center of the mound. Make sure your kitchen counters/ sinks/floors never have food of any kind on them and are always dry; ants will search for water. Wash the counters or any area where ants come in with a 50/50 solution of vinegar and water. his will erase the scent trail ants use to return to food.
