2 Keys to Success in High School 1. Strong study skills. 2. Completion of homework in preparation for class. 3. Use time efficiently. Do not procrastinate. 4. Learn responsibility. 5. Develop communication skills with parents, teachers, counselors, administrators, and peers. 6. High school students should use the resources provided to help them be successful. Tutoring, Teacher websites, online textbooks, etc.

3 Tips for your new high school student: Strive for good grades. GPA starts in 9 th grade. Begin a student resume/portfolio. Get involved in Klein Collins clubs and organizations make an impact.

5 Credits State Credits count toward graduation 26 Credits Required 1 Full Year Class = 1 Credit 1 Semester Class = 0.5 Credit Minimum of 6 state credits and 1 yr of high school required to move from 9 th to 10 th grade Local Credits do not count toward graduation (Office Aide, Student Leadership, etc.) Denied Credit Student does not earn credit due to excessive absences, despite passing grades! ATTENDANCE COUNTS, EVERYONE, EVERYDAY!

13 Advanced Academics: continued Who can take PreAP courses? These courses are open enrollment, but student, parent, current teacher, and counselor input is important What if a student is struggling in a PreAP class? A student may choose to exit a PreAP class during the 1 st 6wks or at the end of the semester. Is there a limit to the number of PreAP courses a student can take? No, but one must consider the student s needs, overall course load, and extra curricular commitments. Advance Placement and Dual Credit courses available 10 th 12 th grades.

26 Transcript Official academic record Semester averages Total credits earned EOCs, GPA, Rank A Transcript is a tool that Colleges use evaluate potential students.

27 GPA and Class Rank GPA (Grade Point Average) Grade points are awarded in each course and will eventually be used to calculate your GPA. GPA determines your class rank. Colleges consider GPA and Class Rank for admission decisions. Remember GPA and Class Rank start in 9 th grade year!
