1 Annual Report 2017/2018 Key Achievements Accelerators Planned BREXIT Impact Superintendent + Principal of the Year Frankfurt International School

3 Dear FIS Community, There is no such thing as a quiet year at Frankfurt International School. However, the 2017/2018 academic year was particularly eventful as activities and changes both on our campuses and around the world brought a flurry of exciting new developments. The year began with a focus on Brexit. News agencies within and outside of Germany were calling to ascertain if FIS could provide access to its highly regarded programs should Frankfurt be inundated with individuals and companies leaving the United Kingdom. In light of a future Brexit-related spike in admissions, the Board of Trustees considered whether FIS would substantially expand its enrollment capacity or seek a different path. After extensive discussions, the Board decided that FIS which is already one of the largest international schools in Europe would focus not on getting bigger, but on getting even better. Born from these discussions were FIS Accelerators, innovative additions to personnel and programs that are expected to propel the school both faster and farther in its commitment to being a world leader. Examples of FIS Accelerators are new instructional coaches across all divisions of the school, the strengthening of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) offerings, additional counseling and college placement support, and a host of other initiatives to be implemented beginning in the 2018/2019 school year. Last year, FIS leading role was further confirmed when our Head of School, Dr. Paul Fochtman, was chosen as the Superintendent of the Year among all international schools by the Association for the Advancement of International Education (AAIE). This recognition came on the heels of FISW Principal, Andrea Rosinger, receiving the Distinguished Principal Award from the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP). Ms. Rosinger s award was particularly appropriate as FISW celebrated its 25-year anniversary in FIS hosted two prominent visitors in the past year. Renowned psychologist and author, Dr. Michael Thompson, spent time in the fall with our community and discussed the joys and challenges of child-rearing. In the spring, Grammy award-winning musician Luis Resto spent time teaching and engaging our students prior to offering an inspirational speech to our graduating class. In addition to these special guests, the campus hosted a Google Summit in the winter that brought together great tech minds from the region to offer professional development for our faculty and staff. Of course, amidst these special events, the school was alive with stage productions of Shrek and The Wicked Lady, as well as a host of other music and dance performances. Our Warrior athletes added to the trophy cabinet as they competed across Europe, but not to be outdone, our Junior Math Team also brought home the gold, placing first among 140 teams in the European championship. FIS graduates again proved their intellectual prowess with an average score of 36 on the IB exams, which is one reason the school also hosted more than 120 college and universities during the year as they marketed their campuses to our students. Space will not allow for us to share the over 1,800 stories of each student who grew during the past year at FIS. The following pages can offer only a broad snapshot of the past year, with data to help the reader better understand our school community. However, be assured that we are working harder than ever to personalize instruction in a way that allows each child to maximize his or her potential. Ward Greenberg Chair Board of Trustees Dr. Paul Fochtman Head of School

The Class of 2018 had an increase in matriculation to USA/Canada and other areas of Europe.

7 Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) Norms FIS uses Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) as its standardized testing instrument. This tool compares FIS students against a sample group of roughly three million other students. As can be seen from the data below, FIS students exceed the MAP norm in all testing areas. The spring MAP data is used to demonstrate academic growth of individual students each year. FIS uses Grade 9 MAP data in mathamatics to help inform its placement of students in one of three levels of math classes. 8 FIS Annual Fund The purpose of the FIS Annual Fund is to finance new and innovative learning programs outside the normal operating budget. The school has the goal of creating and strengthening a culture of giving within its diverse community. The 2017/2018 FIS Annual Fund raised 83,303 in donations from the generous support of FIS parents, faculty, staff, alumni, corporations, and friends. This amount represents a decrease over the previous year s (2016/2017) Annual Fund which raised 193,046. The decrease reflects several very large donations received the previous year totaling 122,500, including a corporate donation designated for a Collaborative Study Area in the Stroth Center. For the year ending 30 June 2018, the Annual Fund received 161 donations (125 in 2016/2017) totaling 83,303. This amount reflects a combination of donations to the Frankfurt International School e.v. and the Frankfurt International School Foundation, Inc., of Euro 63,497 and US dollar 23,073, respectively. The US dollar donations were converted to 19,806 using the exchange rate of.8584 /$ from 30 June There were 136 donations in Euros (105 in 2016/2017) to the Annual Fund ranging from 5 to 20,000. There were 25 donations in US Dollars (20 in 2016/2017) ranging from $20 to $10,000. Excluding very large gifts, the average gift size was 192 ( 174). Despite the decrease in the total amount raised compared to the previous year, there was a 25% increase in the number of unique donors in 2017/2018 over 2016/2017. Donors to the Annual Fund represent the entire FIS Community: 47% are current FIS parents, 32% are current FIS faculty and staff, 18% are alumni of the school, and 3% are corporations or small businesses. Furthermore, 65% of our donors are repeat donors (66% in 2016/2017), thanks to the loyal and generous support and commitment of our Annual Fund supporters. The breakdown between unrestricted and restricted gifts to the 2017/2018 Annual Fund is as follows: Unrestricted Gifts: 48,400 Restricted Gifts: Student Scholarships 26,123 Other 5,340 Kalahari 2,517 George Henning-Ross English Writing Award 923 Total Restricted 34,903 Total Annual Fund Donations 83,303 As in previous years, the Board of Trustees decided to distribute the unrestricted Annual Fund gifts evenly between Student Scholarships (TRP) and new investments in innovative learning and teaching: Distribution of Unrestricted Gifts 50% to Scholarships - Tuition Reduction Program 24,200 50% to Innovative Learning & Teaching Initiatives 24,200 Total Unrestricted 48,400 The results of the 2017/2018 Annual Fund reflect the dedication and generosity of members of the international community of FIS parents, faculty and staff, alumni, corporations, and friends, whose commitment to excellence in education and belief in our mission inspired support of our efforts to continuously improve, enhance, and innovate learning opportunities at FIS. Frankfurt International School wishes to express gratitude to all of its donors for helping open new doors of opportunity. Believe. Inspire. Lead. Approximately 42% (68% in 2016/2017) of the total value of donations to the 2017/18 Annual Fund, or 34,903 ( 132,162 in 2016/2017) was in the form of restricted gifts. Donations designated for specific purposes were for example, Student Scholarships, Kalahari, and the George Henning-Ross English Writing Award.
