3 The course in detail This is a Pre-Masters, dual award development course that invests in managers and leaders. The course leads to enhanced productivity, improved business performance and enriched professional development. Providing both an academic and professional award for those who have significant work experience but no formal university business qualifications, the Pre- Masters Certificate in Professional Studies is not only a pathway onto Manchester Met s extensive Masters and MBA programmes, but also a formal recognition for personal and professional development in the workplace. Underpinned with the latest techniques and skills that are appropriate to effective management, leadership and project management practices, this course is designed to build on the practical knowledge and skills you have developed through your experience of management. There are two core units of study which relate directly to two assignments: Personal Development as a Leader and Project Manager In this unit, you will explore the different ways that people learn and you will identify techniques that will help you become a more effective learner. You will also explore the role of the leader and the nature of leadership, evaluating your own approach to leadership and consider the implications of this for future practice. The concept of leadership will be considered and these theories and techniques will allow you to assess your own leadership in terms of your achievements of team and organisational goals. You will also reflect on how you lead people to develop appropriate responses to differing situations and how you extend their capacity, individual skills and competencies so that you manage projects effectively. The Business/ Organisational Improvement Project This unit looks at the different ways an organisation can be structured and operated for optimal productivity, applying the principles of effective research, marketing and analysis to determine customer expectation and needs. You will identify your organisation s values and objectives and relate to how these affect your own planning and contribute to internal development. You will look at marketing as a management process, exploring how you identify and predict the needs of current and future stakeholders and learn how to write a marketing plan. Organisations quality assurance and quality management practices are explored and you will analyse complex organisational situations, presenting appropriate solutions to these issues. You will also learn about financial management and information systems within business, analysing and interpreting financial statements, sourcing, presenting and utilising financial data for strategic and operational planning. You will also undertake a cost benefit analysis to contribute to your business/operational improvement project. Assessment A continuous learning log and a range of work-based projects make up the assessment of this course. Supporting a developmental learning approach whereby you are encouraged to: n take your learning into the workplace to benefit your individual learning and organisation n apply and test new learning techniques n reflect upon the outcomes of your learning to make further improvements n add value to your organisation by identifying an organisational/business improvement project Time commitment Part-time delivery The course is structured as whole day teaching, usually a weekday (currently Wednesdays) in six week blocks. There are 13 days of face-to-face teaching in total over a 6 month period. The course begins with an induction lasting one day, followed by one day per week of teaching for six consecutive weeks, which leads up to the first assignment. You will then have six further weeks to complete your first assignment, before returning to taught lessons of one day per week for another six consecutive weeks. You will then have another six weeks off to complete your second assignment before completion of the Certificate. On completion, you then have the opportunity to join a postgraduate Masters or MBA programme. Entry requirements There are no formal entry requirements for this course. Candidates should have extensive work place experience and at least 2-3 years in a managerial, supervisory, team leader or a deputising role. Start dates There are two annual intakes for this course, January and October. Induction takes place usually around the middle of these months. Teaching expertise This course is delivered by a team of senior academics from the Business School who have extensive industrial and commercial experience. Fees and funding The fee for this programme can be found on our website at: For more information on fees, financial support and payment options please visit postgraduate/fees 4 Faculty of Business and Law 5
4 Career Prospects: Where can this course take you? On completing the Certificate, you will be eligible to apply for a postgraduate or MBA programme at Manchester Met Business School. Studying for a postgraduate qualification is an important commitment, and represents a highly worthwhile investment in your future. Below are just some of the possible progression routes that would be available to you should you wish to consider further career development. Postgraduate programmes at the Business School n MSc Accounting and Finance n MSc Banking and Finance n MSc Business Analytics n MSc Digital Marketing n MSc Economic and Financial Analysis n MSc Financial Planning and Business n MSc Human Resource n MSc International Business n MSc International Human Resource n MSc International Finance and n MSc Leadership n MSc Leadership in Health and Social Care n MSc Logistics and Supply Chain n MSc Marketing with pathways in Communications and Creative Advertising n MSc Place and Leadership n MSc Project n MSc Public Relations n MSc Public Relations and Media n Manchester Met MBA, with pathways in Digital, Financial Services or Strategic Health and Social Care Study at your own pace The flexible study option enables you to complete modules and gain credits towards a qualification (as detailed in the diagram). Credits can be built up gradually over time at a pace that suits your current schedule and career development needs. We have made it possible to step on and off a particular course of study until you complete your chosen pathway, with three different levels of academic award (PgCert, PgDip and MSc), all of which will add value to your CV. Professional development We have also designed a postgraduate level pathway for professionals whose interests and requirements span a number of different business-related disciplines. The Professional Development pathway enables you to choose modules from a selected number of our Master s programmes, with an opportunity to include work-based learning modules, and achieve a bespoke qualification at all three levels of academic award. For more information on the MSc in Professional Development please contact course enquiries on Dedicated careers and employability support The Faculty of Business and Law s dedicated Careers and Employability Service is at your disposal during, and up to three years after you graduate. With a focus on developing and enhancing your employability skills, there is a range of careers support services on offer during your time here including Professional Development Weeks twice a year, where a festival of skill building activities, training and employer networking takes place. You are encouraged to explore your employment options during your postgraduate qualification and you will have the opportunity to engage with employers through careers fairs, employer networking events and guest speakers. Explaining MSc/PgDip/PgCert Many of our Master s (MSc) programmes can be studied as a Postgraduate Certificate (PgCert) or Postgraduate Diploma (PgDip). The difference between a PgCert, PgDip and an MSc is in the amount of credits the course contains. An MSc contains 180 credits; 120 credits of taught units and 60 credits for a dissertation. If you successfully complete half of the taught units (60 credits), you are awarded a PgCert. If you successfully complete all of the taught units (120 credits), you are awarded a PgDip. If you complete the taught units (120 credits) successfully you can then write a dissertation or research project (another 60 credits) and are awarded an MSc. Benefits of this course The Certificate in Professional Studies in and Leadership has a number of benefits: From a personal development n For those who have not had the benefit of higher education, it provides a challenging but supportive environment to further enhance critical thinking and reflective skills. n On completion of this course, you will receive not only a Certificate in Professional Studies, but also a Diploma in from the Institute of Leadership and (ILM). n You will gain a detailed understanding of effective management, leadership and project management practice in organisations. From an educational n It will provide you with the skills and techniques in critical thinking and problem solving to enable you to progress in both your professional career and in higher education. n It provides direct access to a range of Masters programmes as well as onto our MBA. This programme is taught at the Business School by professionally qualified staff with relevant academic and workplace experience through workshops and project-based assignments. From a business/ organisational improvement n One assignment involves the development of a Business/ Organisational Improvement Project - this project will be based on your own current organisation where possible, and will be supported by senior academics and practitioners at the University. n The assignment will apply the leadership, project management, financial analysis and operational management knowledge gathered both on the course and in the workplace for the benefit of both the individual and the organisation. From an organisational n The business/organisational improvement project identifies and analyses a part of the organisation, which would benefit from a project improvement programme. As part of the process, a project plan is developed and agreed with the University and the organisation. This plan will relate to the scope, depth, academic rigour and demonstrate benefit to the organisation.
