2 Coventry University in the United Kingdom, through the School of Continuing and Professional Education (SCOPE) at the City University of Hong Kong (CityU) offers a one-year, full-time programme leading to the BSc (Hons) in Aviation Management. There are over 90 full-time current students studying on this programme in academic year. Over 210 graduates successfully completed the whole programme in the previous 2 years. Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Aviation Management (Full-time) Coventry University 2 The history of Coventry University can be traced back over 170 years. The academic structure of the University comprises three faculties and one school: Faculty of Engineering and Computing; Faculty of Business, Environment and Society; Faculty of Health and Life Sciences; and School of Art and Design. Currently around 24,000 students are studying at University. There are about 200 academic staff and 150 support staff currently in The Faculty of Engineering and Computing. The Faculty offers a board range of programmes within the field of Engineering and Computing, including Foundation, BSc, BEng, MSc and MBA, as well as a range of research programmes. The programmes are highly regarded by many companies for their practicality and are based on a sound theoretical foundation to help students achieve their maximum potential. Programme Aims and Objectives The aims of the programme are: To provide students with the knowledge and skills required to deal with management problems in aviation-related industries through exploring the inter-dependence between air transport and logistics operations; To give particular emphasis to the use of analytical techniques in tackling current and future issues in the industry from an international perspective; To enhance students lifelong learning skills for personal development and contribution to the society at large. Career Prospects Knowledge from Aviation Management is applicable in a wide range of job positions and industries. Career options range from airline marketing, business analyst for airports and airlines, management planning for airlines, logistics and supplier industry as well as related jobs. Typical graduates will start their careers as ground handling officers. Recent Achievements: Ranked 24 in Mechanical Engineering (The Guardian University Guide 2014) Ranked 23 in Aeronautical & Manufacturing Engineering Discipline (The Times and Sunday Times University League Tables 2014) A Record of Excellence The Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) assessment rated the teaching of Coventry excellent. The Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) ranked several subject areas of Coventry research at the highest rating. The University won the Queen s Anniversary Prize for Higher & Further Education. Recently, Coventry University has been rated the Modern University of the Year by The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide Graduation Ceremony 2013
3 Student Support from CityU Teaching will be delivered mainly by CityU full-time academic staff and experienced industry practitioners with input to teaching from Coventry University. The programme will be held at SCOPE Kowloon Tong Learning Centre and SCOPE Tsim Sha Tsui East Learning Centre. Students will be provided with access to CityU s Library (including electronic resources) and Computing Services Centre located on campus. Students can also utilize the Resources Centre managed by CityU SCOPE at its Learning Centres. Programme Structure The programme structure consists of core modules. In order to further benefit the students, two Add-vantage modules focusing on key transferrable skills of English and communication are designed to improve students employability. To fulfill the learning outcomes of the programme, tailor-made module combination will be provided for students graduated from aviation/airport operations and from logistics disciplines. Module details, module combination and teaching sequence are subject to revision by Coventry University. Eligible students from Airport Operations and Aviation Logistics, Transport and Logistics Studies, Customer Services for Aviation and Passenger Transport and related disciplines have to take 180 credits through the normal scheme, which is equivalent to one and a half year study load in the UK three-year honours undergraduate degree curriculum. Credit-exemption (30 credits) will be granted specifically to graduates of Community College of City University AD in Airport Operations and Aviation Logistics. Credit-exemption (20 credits) will be granted specifically to graduates of HKU SPACE HD in Aviation Studies. 3

The aims of this module are to encourage students to use the structures of language with ease and fluency and deal with a variety of written sources with ease and efficiency, to develop these language skills to a point where they can function quite effectively and without significant problems in academic and professional contexts and to develop their listening and speaking skills to a level where they are accurate and successful on most occasions, and can effectively find other words and expressions when they do not know the exact words. Students are encouraged to build upon their knowledge of English so that they can justify their opinions, answer unpredictable questions, develop or explain complex points, explore the differences between language use and meaning in context, and use the language in a creative and flexible way, producing quite long and complex structures. Students are expected to improve their ability to understand a writer s purpose more intuitively, as well as exhibit greater discernment when making decisions about the usefulness or relevance of a text. 207KM Transport and Logistics Management The module will enable students to develop an understanding of the fundamental principles and concepts of transportation, supply chain management (SCM) and logistics management. They will learn the objectives of efficient transportation, SCM including achieving high productivity, high quality and seamless transfer of information, products and services between each stage of the supply chain and ultimately to the satisfaction of the customer. 209KM Introduction to Research Methods This module introduces students to the process of business research and decision making. It provides an understanding of the practical and professional issues associated with the analysis, design and choice of solutions to business problems, and demonstrates the need for formal planning and management in the development of business projects. Students will be introduced to creating a research design, carrying out a literature survey, and selecting methods for data collection and analysis. The module is intended to underpin final stage honours projects and will include an introduction to both quantitative and qualitative research methods. 292EKM Airline Marketing and Management The module explores the application of business strategy principles and practice in the aviation industry with specific reference to current developments in the ownership and operation of international and national airline businesses and route development. 298EKM Aviation Safety, Security & Emerg. Planning The module explores current approaches through applicable regulations to aviation safety and security, Safety Management Systems (SMS), human factors and the use of technology to safety and security issues applicable to aircraft, airports, flights and airline operations. It further considers essential procedures for coping with air and ground emergencies and includes an Emergency Response Planning workshop. 4
5 300ADD Add-vantage Module (Effective Communication) The aim of this module is to provide students with an understanding of the principles and techniques which will assist them to enhance personal communication skills, and to require them to analyse and apply appropriate communication strategies. Participants will be given the opportunity to practice these skills in a safe environment and reflect on current performance and future development need. Students who undertake this module may be in a stronger position to secure employment. Cross-sector employers have identified effective communication as an essential skill they look for when recruiting graduates. 351EM Engineering Project Management This module introduces learners to project management and equips them with skills, both human and technical, that will enable them to lead and work on a variety of projects. The importance of de facto project management scheduling skills, quality and estimating standards is emphasised, however, learners are encouraged from the outset to see the role of the project manager within the broader perspective of strategic business management, understanding where projects come from and why they are selected. The module also covers the use of Project Management software for creating, analysing, and monitoring projects. 303KM Project Management This module introduces students to project management and provides a foundation for developing project skills, both human and technical, that will enable them to work on a variety of projects, primarily with a computer or knowledge based element. Students are encouraged from the outset to see the role of the project manager within the broader perspective of strategic business management, understanding where projects come from and why they are selected. The roles of both the purchaser and the supplier of a computer or knowledge based project is recognised and explored. The importance of de facto project management scheduling skills, quality and estimating standards is emphasised. The human and change aspects of projects are considered in order that the student may understand the effect on morale, productivity and quality of management decisions. 307EKM Global Logistics and Supply Chain Management The aim of this module is to bring together all the elements of logistics in the management of the global supply chain. The module examines a variety of approaches to the management of logistics operations that can be used to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of the integrated global supply chain. Issues relating to international trade and payments are examined together the concept of the global customer. 392EKM Aviation Strategy and Planning The module explores the application of business strategy principles and practice in the aviation industry with specific reference to current developments in the ownership and operation of international and national airline businesses and route development. 395SE Human Factors in Aviation This module aims to provide students with an understanding of human factors and considers their impact on various parts of the aviation industry. Psychological, physical and social factors can all have an impact on human performance and behaviour. This can cause safety problems and accidents through pilot error or poor maintenance but also affects other parts of the industry. Students will gain an understanding of the need to take human factors into account in relation to management, training and design as well as an understanding of theoretical models of human error and techniques for measuring human performance. 330EKM Project The main aim of the individual final year project is to give students experience in carrying out a substantial piece of work to a professional standard. Objectives of the exercise are to become an `expert in a specialised field of study to develop skills and experience in report writing and presentation to integrate knowledge gained in different course modules to exercise initiative, creativity and imagination. 5
6 Programme Delivery The programme will normally span over 3 trimesters (for students who need to take 150 to 180 credits). Each trimester follows a regular structure of 12 weeks. Students with non-aviation background will be required to take a bridging module in July to Aug Lecturers from Coventry University will attend the orientation at the start of the programme and play an important role in preparing the students for the Honours Degree Project. They work alongside academic staff from CityU so as to ensure the students best chance of success. Assessment The assessment of students is by means of coursework and examinations. The weighting of these two components varies among modules. Admission Requirements Students have to take 180 credits in 1 year. Candidates for admission to the programme should possess one of the following: Associate Degree (AD) in Airport Operations and Aviation Logistics from Community College of City University (30-credit exemption); Higher Diploma (HD) in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering, Transport and Logistics Studies; or Customer Services for Aviation and Passenger Transport from The Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (IVE); Higher Diploma (HD) in Business (Transport Logistics) from Hong Kong College of Technology; Higher Diploma (HD) in Logistics and Transport Operations from HKU School of Professional and Continuing Education (HKU SPACE); Higher Diploma (HD) in Aviation Studies, from HKU School of Professional and Continuing Education (HKU SPACE) (20-credit exemption); A qualification deemed to be equivalent to one of the above. Students from other disciplines (e.g. HD/AD in Business) will be assessed on a case-by-case basis and, if deemed to be eligible for admission, are required to take 200 credits in order to cover all the required pre-requisite knowledge in aviation discipline.
