Meet our alumni Katarina Stefansson from Sweden and Barbara Nemethova from Slovakia are two of our alumni. They completed the Business Management BSc in 2015, and both went on to postgraduate study in London. We asked them to tell you about their time as SBM students, and what impact that had on their personal and career development. Katarina: Throughout my three years at QMUL, I had a very interesting development process. When I started here I felt really lost, both academically and personally, because it was my first year in London. I had no clue how to write essays and I was really shy when it came to talking to professors. I didn t use any of the help that was offered to me. In my second year everything started falling into place, and I became more comfortable with my professors, my peers, and the city as well. Finally, in my third year, it felt like I had more time; I was more organised and I had more of a structure. I learnt to be strategic about my study, and about planning my day and the time I spent on various tasks. Katarina: My favourite module was my dissertation. Barbara: Mine too! It was great because it helps you to look at a holistic picture rather than just one subject in particular. The biggest support for me was my supervisor, who would meet me every week and guide me through my thinking; he would help me structure my thoughts, The inter-disciplinary nature of the course enabled me to develop critical thinking and analytical skills. This made me view the world differently and also fuelled my interests in politics, sociology and philosophy Prinz Sindac Analyst at RBS (Markets and International Banking) and School of Business and Management Alumnus 2013 encourage me to read more challenging academic articles, and provide support at every stage. Katarina: Our supervisors were really good. It just felt like they were always there, always available. We also got great support from other academics in the school. Everyone showed great interest in our work, and they were very supportive. Barbara: I think the most interesting modules for me were always the more research-focused ones, and that has to do with the amazing academics and the way they taught us. My time at QMUL has definitely helped me identify what I would like to do in the future. Katarina: The skills and knowledge I acquired at QMUL were invaluable. In my final year I realised that all of the modules I had studied were actually interconnected. For example, when I was writing my dissertation I could apply theories and principles from every single module. 14

Katarina Stefansson Business Management BSc 2015 Barbara: The advice I would give new students would be to challenge yourself because this helps you to broaden your horizons and your thinking, and this is what you are supposed to do at university try out different things and decide what you want to do next. The second thing is go to the Peer Assisted Study Support (PASS). I was a PASS mentor myself, and I think that you can t get the advice you get there anywhere else, because the mentors are students who went through the same thing you are about to experience and the advice they give is very helpful. Katarina: I would advise new students to take the opportunities and the help you get at QMUL. In my first year I was shy, and I didn t really go to the academics during their office hours. This changed in my third year. I participated in a workshop designed to improve my presentation skills, and I made sure I spoke to all of my module supervisors before handing in coursework. This really helped to improve my results. Barbara Nemethova Business Management BSc 2015 Barbara: I definitely feel that having come from QMUL, I think differently from others on my current course.the programmes at QMUL are very interdisciplinary, and as a result I am able to approach things from a social or political perspective. I don t just ask: How does this make profit for us?, I ask: How can we do something more with this? How can we make it more sustainable, and how can we take it to another level? I have recently started going to networking events and meeting people from industry, and I have always felt that I had both the confidence and knowledge to contribute to the conversation, no matter the topic. I think that what we had during our time at QMUL, aside from the chance to study so many subjects, were professors who didn t just teach us theory, but also how to think about theory. And that, I think, differentiates us as QMUL students. 15

At first I thought that changing country, friends, style of education and environment around could have been very hard for me, but first of all it is thanks to Queen Mary and the School of Business and Management that I enjoy my time in London. Not only I have gained knowledge and valuable skills, but also I got a lot of friends, from various countries and I know that I am not alone in my journey, everybody is near to help. Queen Mary gives so many opportunities to us, that even I still have to discover and try more. Mariam Hakobyan, Marketing and Management BSc

Visit us The best way to find out about life at QMUL is to visit us. You can talk to academic staff, see our halls of residence and even sample a sandwich from one of our campus cafés. Open days QMUL runs two annual Open Days a year. Find out when the next one is at: ac.uk/visitus. You can also book yourself on to one of our campus tours throughout the year. You will be guided by one of our student ambassadors in a small group, so will be able to have the chance to ask as many questions as you would like. Contact us For any specific enquiries about applying to study with us, contact James Boote on: j.boote@qmul.ac.uk 35

London, our location and accommodation A global capital of commerce and culture to rival New York, Tokyo and Beijing, London is one of the world s great cities. With nearly 400,000 students studying here, it s also a fantastic place to be a student. There is always something going on: along with plenty of free events, your student card will also provide reduced entry costs to a surprising number of places, as well as discounts on clothes and food. The School of Business and Management is conveniently located in our Mile End campus, close to London s main financial districts, the City of London and Canary Wharf. 36

London is the business hub of the world, with many large firms located here. As a business student, this really appeals to me as it means more opportunities to find internships and work experience Azmeena Azim, Business Management BSc 2017 I fell in love with Queen Mary from my very first campus tour before becoming a student here. It ticked all the boxes for me being in London, the business capital of the UK, whilst also offering a friendly communitybased campus life. That, for me, is the perfect setting for a business management student to thrive Charlie Pearson Business Management BSc

London, our location and accommodation A peaceful oasis in a busy city Our self-contained campus is set beside Regent s Canal and overlooks the busy Mile End Park. It has a friendly, relaxed atmosphere: with plenty of greenery and attractive outdoor spaces, it s easy to forget that you re in the middle of a bustling capital city. At our Mile End site, you will be able to enjoy all the advantages of a campus lifestyle: a friendly community of staff and students, safety and convenience. We have two shops, four cafés, two restaurants, a bar, a gym, a bookshop and a bank on site all of this and only 15 minutes from the West End. We ve got nine food outlets on campus including restaurants, coffee shops and two grocery stores. Ground Café serves the best coffee on campus and gourmet Gelupo gelato. Mucci s serves delicious salad, pizza and pasta, and is also good value. 38

Accommodation We have one of the largest self-contained residential campuses in London at our home in Mile End. Living on campus is fun, safe and convenient you ll only be a five minute walk to your lectures, which is great for those 9am starts. All of our accommodation is in self-catered flats and maisonettes. For virtual tours and full details of the accommodation options, including prices, visit: residences.qmul.ac.uk Unique campus architecture From the Lego-like shapes of the G.E. Fogg Building, to the tessellated patterns on our Mathematical Sciences Building; and from the elegant Arts Two building to the futuristic shapes of the converted Victorian Lock-keeper s Cottage, one of the things that makes our campus stand out is its distinctive architecture. 39

London, our location and accommodation While the West End might be the geographical heart of London, if you want to find the real soul of the capital, you will have to head east. The East End has a rich history, cultural scene and vibrant sense of community, which we are lucky to be able to call home. One of the most rapidly changing parts of the city, it combines the best of old and new. Location, location, location As any Londoner will tell you, the most important thing about living in the capital is location. We are close to Shoreditch and Brick Lane, as well as the Tech City technology cluster and the financial centres of Canary Wharf and the City. We are also only one stop away from the world-class sports facilities of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Stratford, and only 15 minutes away from Oxford Circus on the Tube. The facilities at QMUL are fantastic. The library and the Hive make group projects easier to manage, and if you want a more quiet area you can book your own room in the library or take a free room in the Bancroft Building. The facilities make studying easier. During exam season, the Students Union was also very helpful. As well as quiet rooms that were great for studying, they set up a bunny and puppy room to help students relax and take a break from all the chaos. Isabelle Victoria Manlapaz Ilaya Accounting and Management BSc

Mile End Next to QMUL s main campus and bordering Regent s Canal is Mile End Park, which features a leisure centre, museum, ecology zone and an art pavilion. A walk along the Canal will bring you to Victoria Park and eventually Broadway Market the perfect route for a weekend cycle. Mile End is also home to the Mile End Climbing Wall; based in a converted engineering works only minutes from campus, it s one of the largest indoor climbing walls in London. Stepney Just down the road from Mile End, Stepney is popular with our students for its pubs and the independent Genesis cinema, which is housed in a beautiful converted music hall and is famed for its half-price ticket deals on Mondays and Wednesdays. The Genesis is also home to Bar Paragon, where you can sample a wide range of classic cocktails made by master mixologists while attending events such as their monthly film quizzes and poetry slams. Spitalfields The Old Spitalfields Market is a five-minute walk from Liverpool Street station and Brick Lane. Here you ll find restaurants and stalls selling a variety of items on different days, from vintage clothing to collectable vinyl: try Thursdays for antiques and Fridays for fashion and art. 41

Bethnal Green A leisurely walk along Regent s Canal and only one stop from Mile End on the Central Line, Bethnal Green has a lively and eclectic atmosphere, filled with shops and art collectives. A popular location for student housing, it s also home to the London Buddhist Centre amd the V&A Museum of Childhood. Its Columbia Road is a winding treasuretrove of coffee houses, vintage shops and art studios, with its famous Flower Market held every Sunday, rain or shine. Whitechapel and Brick Lane Whitechapel is home to the East London Mosque, the oldest mosque in London, along with a street market running Monday to Saturday. It also features the East End Thrift Store and the Whitechapel Gallery, which offers a changing programme of innovative art exhibitions and houses a celebrated bookshop and café. Brick Lane is famous for its curry houses, bars and clubs, artisan coffee shops, record shops, vintage shops, art galleries and Sunday market, which is packed with vintage and antique bargains. Shoreditch and Hoxton Shoreditch is home to many exciting student events, from private concerts performed by internationally-renowned artists to the daily buzz generated by its galleries, markets and shops. Not only is Shoreditch a social hub, it is also home to Tech City, where many of London s digital start-ups are based. There are regular free networking events in the area. Some of the best venues in the area include XOYO, The Hoxton Pony and The Old Blue Last at almost 400 years old, it s known as an old haunt of Shakespeare s. Now owned by the Vice media channel, it hosts high-profile gigs. 42

Canary Wharf and Greenwich Developed in the 1980s on the site of London s old docklands, Canary Wharf (along with the City) is the financial centre of the capital a hub of global finance and glittering skyscrapers. There are lots of restaurants, cinemas and a shopping centre here, as well as an ice skating rink in winter. Just a short journey from Canary Wharf on the Docklands Light Railway is Greenwich, where you can visit the National Maritime Museum or the Royal Observatory to admire a panoramic view over London. Greenwich Market is London s only historic market set within a World Heritage site, and boasts a range of craft stalls, food bars and restaurants open seven days a week. Stratford One stop from Mile End on the Central Line is Stratford, famous as the site of the 2012 Olympic Games. The Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park now offers the same world-class sporting facilities in a beautifully landscaped park. Westfield Stratford City is one of the largest shopping complexes in Europe and has a huge range of high-street shops, bars, restaurants, a cinema and a bowling alley. 43
