The sessions include information about the services provided for international students, together with opportunities to meet staff and students and make new friends. 3 Monday 18 September 13:00-14:30 Introduction to ACES and University services Room 9130, Cantor Building This session will introduce you to key staff in the Faculty and also some of the services that the University offers, such as the Learning Centre and International Student Support. It is important to know who is who in the Faculty, so that you know who to contact for advice and guidance. We offer a wide range of services to help you achieve the best from your course.
4 Monday 18 September 14:30-16:00 Informal Welcome from staff and mentors Cantor Building Atrium Visit our information stand providing printed copies of the induction information, along with more information about the support available in the faculty. Our International Student Support Officer will also be available to answer your questions. Additionally, there will be tea, coffee and biscuits, and a chance to meet some of the postgraduate teaching and support staff. You will also meet the student mentors; these are seniors who started their studies some time last year. They are from a broad range of courses within the faculty, and have been selected to act as friendly advisors to new students.
5 Tuesday 19 September 10:30-12:30 Post Graduate networking and information session Charles Street Building, Room Start building your network of peers and university knowledge: meet Hallam Union staff and advocates learn about Hallam Union and how it can help you during your studies meet other postgraduate students on your course and beyond - start to build your network of peers find out how you can work together with University staff to problem solve and improve the overall educational experience you have at University
6 Tuesday 19 September Meet Your Mentor 13:15-14:00 Eric Mensforth Building (EMB) Each student will be assigned to a mentor, and this will be the first opportunity to meet them formally (although you will probably have met him or her informally already). The mentors will describe the experiences they had as new students, how they overcame any difficulties, and how they adjusted to study in the UK. They will discuss any practical problems that you may have encountered and will pass on some valuable tips. Prior to the meeting, we will you with the name of your mentor and the specific room number. Introduction to Blackboard/ Tour of the Learning Centre 14:00-15:00 The mentors will present an interactive introduction to the University's virtual learning environment, Blackboard. They will signpost you to the areas that you will find most useful as you begin your course, from a student's perspective, and will be able to answer any of your questions. Prior to the meeting, we will you with the name of your mentor and the specific room number.
7 Tuesday 19 September 19:00-22:00 SOCIAL EVENT This is a great opportunity to meet other students, new and current, along with staff from the Faculty. Our PG Mentors will run this session and be available to answer any remaining questions you may have before you start your teaching session next week.
