2 Message from the Dean Message from the Dean The Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences is the largest faculty of the University of Pretia in terms of student numbers. The key to the Faculty s success is the high premium that is placed on the preparation of a new generation of entrepreneurs, economists and managers who will create jobs and have an innovative approach to life. The University of Pretia aims to be internationally competitive while at the same time being locally relevant. The Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences suppts this goal by ensuring that its academic and research programmes always meet the highest standards. National and international accreditation of degrees by professional bodies is the der of the day. The Faculty is serious about ensuring that the market value of the degrees it awards will create a competitive advantage f its students. The Faculty comprises ten departments, namely the departments of Accounting, Auditing, Taxation, Financial Management, Economics, Marketing and Communication Management, Human Resource Management, Business Management, Tourism Management and the School of Public Management and Administration, which together offer 23 undergraduate and 90 postgraduate programmes. 4 EMS Photo page EMS Photo page To be on the Dean s List The Faculty is proud of the academic achievements of BCom students and students with an outstanding academic recd qualify f the Dean s List. Such students were recently awarded by the Dean with certificates, gift vouchers and a cocktail function. A warm first year welcome As is customary of the Department of Marketing and Communication Management, an attempt is always made to impress our first years during the first official meeting. Past presentations took themes from Grease, Casino Royal, etc. The 2010 theme was inspired by the new Katy Perry song, Firewk. The message to the new first years was, as Katy says, to let their colours burst, and as such to believe in themselves. In the 1st place! Chantelle Coetzer, an academic trainee from the Department of Auditing, jointly obtained the 1st place in the 2010 SAICA QE1 exam. Chantelle obtained her BCom(Accounting Sciences) degree with an average of 86% in In 2009 she obtained her BCom(Hons)(Accounting Sciences) with distinction. Results celebrated Academic trainees celebrated the results of the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA) Qualifying Examination Part 1 (QE 1). UP achieved a pass rate of 97% and all ten the academic trainees at UP passed the exam. A SA Netball Protea in the Faculty (Right) Vanes-Mari du Toit is a second year BCom (Human Resource Management) student at Tuks. During 2011 she was chosen f the SA Protea Netball Team. She enjoys her course at Tuks tremendously and dreams of one day combining spt with industrial psychology. Sneakers with a difference (Below) As part of their training, BCom (Entrepreneurship) and BCom (Business Management) students had to do a project where they used the theetical background that they receive in class and their own experience to create and make shoes from recycled material. Learning through Facebook Facebook is a very powerful tool. Why not incpate it into the teaching environment? The Department of Taxation decided to do just that! The large amount of students registered f Taxation makes it difficult to personally interact with them, and Facebook was the ideal platfm to create this personal interaction with the students. A visit to Merc (Left) The Business Management honours class visited the Mercedes-Benz spare part facility and Caterpillar s Johannesburg Distribution Centre in Isando recently as part of the module Integrated Logistics Management. Celebration! Proud students, their families and staff celebrated together when 46 Thuthuka students graduated and received the BCom (Accounting Sciences) degree the first step towards becoming a Chartered Accountant. Bursaries gale! The Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences is the first choice of many talented young people in pursuing their higher education degree studies. The Faculty provides an intellectual home f the rich diversity of South Africa s academic talent. Through our continuous pursuit of excellence in research, teaching and learning and community involvement, we have become a preferred partner f professional bodies, employers, and students in South Africa. If FRK 122 is selected, a candidate will not be able to continue with Financial Accounting at the 200 and 300 level. Also note that FRK 121 may be a prerequisite f a number of other modules (eg BEL 213 and 223) and it is the responsibility of the candidate to ensure that he/ she makes the appropriate choice between FRK 121 and 122. Exple tourism BCom(Hons)(Tourism Management) students expled the Nthern Cape and West Coast where they were exposed to many aspects of tourism, which provided a great learning and experience platfm f their future careers in the industry. Play and Learn First-year Financial Accounting students taking part in a business wld simulation game. The game facilitates the process of getting to know each other and promoting team building in a social setting. The students are introduced to the Commercium board game which is styled as an interactive Monopoly game and allows students to compete against each other while learning about business transactions. In the capacity as a human resource practitioner, you will be responsible f matters such as developing human resource strategies and policies, human resource planning, recruitment and selection of employees, training and development of staff, labour relations, personnel administration, etc. This degree is the first step to qualify as a human resource practitioner, psychometrist industrial psychologist. Careers: The purpose of this option is to equip learners of supply chain management with the ability to participate in functional management within an integrated supply chain. Candidates from national, provincial and local spheres of government will obtain entry into the programme. Candidates will gain in-depth knowledge of the administrative function, both local and international. Emphasis is placed on the three spheres of government with reference to aspects such as resources management, international administration, policy management, ethics, intergovernmental relations and the role of the state. The ce modules f specialisation in economics are economics and statistics, although mathematics is also an imptant component. In the first year of study, students become thoughly acquainted with the principles of economics, with special emphasis on the South African economy and its challenges. In the second year of study, the focus is on intermediate economic they focusing on both microeconomics and macroeconomics. In the third year of study, modern economic analysis is emphasised, while particular attention is paid to public policy, international trade, economic analysis and growth and development, the latter being the central economic policy challenge in Africa, in general, and in South Africa, in particular. Graduates are primarily employed as analysts, consultants, researchers traders in either the private public sects. The government, the South African Reserve Bank, private and commercial banks, leading stockbrokers and consultancies, both locally and internationally, commonly employ graduates in economics. Students are strongly advised to proceed with postgraduate studies. 11 BCom degrees in Financial Sciences BCom with specialisation in Econometrics Afrikaans English as Home language 5 (60-69%) 5 (60-69%) 30 The BCom(Econometrics) is a three-year (full-time) degree course in which students are introduced to economic they, economic policy and the statistical they underpinning empirical analysis, which is me commonly referred to as econometrics. The ce modules f specialisation in econometrics are economics, mathematical statistics and mathematics. Econometrics is the measurement and quantitative analysis of actual economic and business phenomena. F the professional, econometrics is a fascinating subject that provides f the measurement and analysis of economic phenomena and the fecasting of future economic trends. Econometrics is primarily applied in the quantification and validation of economic they as well as the analysis of real wld transactions associated with human behaviour. The discipline is relevant to public policy, including health, education, transptation, housing and environmental protection. The tools and results can also be applied to other disciplines, especially within the social sciences, such as histy, political science, sociology and psychology. On the successful completion of the three-year apprenticeship and the relevant qualifying examinations, a candidate is eligible to register with the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA) as a chartered accountant CA(SA). BCom(Accounting Sciences) is an accredited programme that fms part of the requirements f training as a CA(SA) both inside and outside public practice, and as a registered accountant and audit (RAA) practising as an accountant and audit in public practice. The CA(SA) and RAA qualifications are the highest professional qualifications in accounting in South Africa and enjoy international recognition. Note: Candidates who did not take and pass Accounting as a school subject must take and pass Financial Accounting 101 in their first year. The purpose of the degree is to provide students with detailed knowledge and specific skills in a number of fields in financial management. The syllabus is also structured in such a way that it aligns with the syllabus of the professional qualifications of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), as well as the South African Institute of Professional Accountants (SAIPA). Graduates in possession of the BCom(Financial Management Sciences) wk in the private and the public sects as management accountants and financial managers. A unique feature of the three-year BCom(Statistics) is that it consistently balances they and practice. Statistics is the art and science of collecting, ganising, analysing, interpreting and presenting quantitative and qualitative data f the purpose of drawing scientifically founded conclusions. Briefly, statistics can be regarded, among other things, as the science of gaining infmation from data. With the interactive use of the computer, the statistician can apply statistical models and methods in all types of scientific research, including marketing management, communication management, tourism management, financial management, business management, investment management, human resource management, economics and agricultural economics. Statisticians are expected to be proficient in a multitude of skills. A strong numerical background and interest, the desire to master computer programming and the use of various software packages, the ability to interact with professionals from various disciplines, as well as communication skills, both verbal and written, are of imptance. Learning from data is one of the most relevant and vital challenges of the infmation age in which we live, and it presents exciting opptunities f those who wk as professional statisticians. F the knowledgeable and motivated graduate, there are career opptunities in many diverse, as well as complementary sects, which include the following: Financial institutions: Statisticians specialising in the economic applications of statistics deal with aspects such as national production and expenditure, international economic relations, employment, public finance and related issues. Market research ganisations play an indispensable role in gathering infmation that is used to improve the quality of decision-making in various industries. Industry: Statisticians are increasingly employed in industries such as mining, production and government cpations, f example, Eskom, Sasol and AECI, and the pharmaceutical industry in general. Organised agriculture is another vitally imptant industry where sophisticated statistical techniques are used to meet the growing demand f food and services. Research councils and educational institutions: The research councils are well-known employers of scientists of diverse disciplines and employ statisticians to ensure scientifically founded research outputs. These include the Medical Research Council, the Council f Scientific and Industrial Research, the Agricultural Research Council and the Human Sciences Research Council. Statisticians are also involved in the training of students at universities and universities of technology. The challenges of modern education and good research are of great relevance, especially in South Africa. The public sect: The government employs statistically proficient people in many of its departments, the most prominent being Statistics South Africa and the South African Reserve Bank. Language policy and medium of instruction In conducting its business, the University uses two official languages, namely Afrikaans and English. In fmal education, the medium of instruction is either Afrikaans English, both of these languages, provided that there is a demand and that it is academically and economically justifiable. However, it remains the student s responsibility to ascertain on an annual basis in which language a module and any further level of that module is presented. In respect of administrative and other services, a student has the right to choose whether the University should communicate with him her in Afrikaans English. Academic Infmation Management Academic Infmation Management (AIM101 [AIM111 and AIM121] depending on your programme) is compulsy f all new first-year students. AIM101 will be presented in the first second semester depending on your programme. AIM111 will be presented in the first semester and AIM121 in the second semester. There is no exemption examination available f AIM101 (AIM111 and AIM121). Compulsy Test f registered first-year students PLEASE NOTE: The Test does not replace the National Benchmark Test (NBT). A student with high academic potential can have a low level of academic literacy which may put the student s academic success at risk. The academic literacy levels of all new first-year students at the University of Pretia are therefe measured by means of a standardised Test. If necessary, they are then placed on a suitable academic literacy programme in accdance with their level of risk. This Test is written only once and is compulsy f all new first-year students, regardless of whether the student has already written an admissions test has completed a language course elsewhere. If the student later decides to change his/her academic programme, the Academic Literacy Test does not need to be written again. Students may write the Test in either English Afrikaans. Students in the faculties of Health Sciences and Veterinary Science are obliged to write the test in English.
