2 Evaluative Report of the Departments-MTA Brief self-evaluation of every department may be provided separately, avoiding the repetition of data already given in the profile, to the extent possible. While the profile may provide quantitative data, this part of the report may be made more evaluative, using the quantitative data only to substantiate the claims, wherever necessary. 1. Faculty profile, adequacy and competency of faculty The Director of the Institute is Prof. S.P. Bansal.. The extensive and meticulous work of Dr. S. P. Bansal on Tourism and Environment and Impacts of Tourism is recognized as a major contribution in the tourism field and is well known by students and academicians. Dr Bansal also has done path breaking research on Impact of Tourism in the developed countries with special reference to France and compared it with the tourism scenario in India, when he was selected for Fellowship under Indo-French Cultural Exchange Programme. He has visited several countries like USA. UK, Switzerland, Singapore, Hong Kong, China etc. for attending International Conferences. Dr. Sushma Rewal Chugh has specialised in the field of Tourism Marketing. Her Doctorate is on Marketing of Himachal. She has also carried out research on Consumer Behaviour of Tourists, studying the Attitude and Satisfaction Level of Tourists. Dr. Sonia Khan, Lecturer has a Phd on Gender and Tourism. She has worked on projects on Rural Tourism Development in the South West region of Western Australia and on Tourism development Theme for the Mining town and Horticultural town of Harvey and Colies Shire of South West Australia. In her research project submitted in the filed of Leisure Studies in Holland, she has worked on the aspect of gender taking the case of women and leisure under the topic Leisure Behaviour of Women In Kinnaur ( Himachal Pradesh, India ). Dr. Chander Mohan has a Phd in the field of Adventure Tourism. He has carried out practical field work on a study of trekking routes and the various aspects of mountaineering and camping. His area of operations includes Destination Development and research for identifying and promoting local destinations for various tourist markets. 2. Student profile according to programmes of study, gender, region etc: Refer to point 5.1.1

Changes made in the courses or programmes during the past five years and the contribution of the faculty to those changes The MTA course curriculum has been revised twice in the 5 years in 2002 and 2007 as per UGC guidelines. The whole faculty has been involved in designing the new course. 4. Trend in the success rate and drop out rate of students during the last five years Success Rate 99%, drop out rate-1% 5. Learning resources of the department like library, computers, laboratories and other such resources The Department has its own library with about 700 tourism books. Besides Internet access is available for looking up information on new resources. There is a well equipped computer laboratory 6. Enhancement of the learning resources during the past five years The department keeps subscribing to new Tourism Journals, purchasing new tourism books and new equipment for enrichment of the course. 7. Modern Teaching methods in practice other than the lecture method There are visits to the industry, engagement in tourism projects and assistance in conducting tourism project feasibility from time to time. In addition case studies, students seminars, presentations are other applied teaching methods, other than lecture method. 8. Participation of teachers in academic and personal counselling of students The teachers are regularly engaged in teaching courses, attending refresher and orientation programmes, seminars, conferences and counselling students on their projects and career avenues. 9. Details of faculty development programmes and teachers who benefited during the past five years Refresher and Orientation courses are undertaken by teachers. All the faculty requiring such courses have benefited from these programmes in the last five years
4 10. Participation of teachers in academic activities other than teaching and research The teachers participate in Seminars and Conferences. 11. Collaborations with other departments and institutions at the national and international level and their outcome during the past five years Collaboration: The Tourism Department of the University carries out yearly collaborative research with the other government departments, directly or indirectly related with the Tourism Industry. These include, The State Department of Tourism, Environment and Pollution Control Board, Science and Technology and Department of Culture. The MTA department is actively linked with the Tourism Industry related public and private enterprises. In the last 5 years the Department has been working in close coordination with the State Government departments of Science and technology, pollution control Board, Environment, and Tourism, to carry out tourism projects and help in development of sustainable tourism. The Department constantly interacts with the other Universities and Institutes carrying out Tourism Courses, to incorporate and revise its syllabus, and further exchange academic expertise in tourism for the benefit of students and research scholars. Mutual participation of students is encouraged in Tourism events organized by Academic Tourism Organizations. Liaison with the Industry enterprises like Hotels, Travel Agencies and Airlines is maintained for a number of purposes like, practical orientation of the students, Guest Lectures from Tourism professionals in areas of latest trends and developments in tourism, liaison for hosting of Conferences, workshops and seminars, and providing assistance to private entrepreneurs for carrying out feasibility studies on embarkation of proposed projects. The department has collaboration with the Swiss Institute of Hotel Management for providing training for the students of the proposed course in Hotel management. Such close cooperation with the industry enterprises has helped the department enrich its recourses for the benefit of both the faculty and the students.

International Organizations From time to time Individual teachers have also been associated with research, evaluation and consultation with several International organizations like, Maison Science de L Homme, Paris, and Leisure Institute at Wageningen University, The Netherlands. National Organizations. Projects in the Department have been funded by various National Agencies like University Grants Commission, Ministry of Tourism, New Delhi, World Bank etc. 17. Method of continuous student assessment The students are assessed by their class participation, attendance, seminars, case studies, presentations and Project assignments 18. Placement record of the past students and the contribution of the department to the student placements Placement record of Student: The department has its Placement cell and all students are provided placement at the time of their on the job training. All students are placed in various sectors of the industry, most of them at managerial positions in organizations like Orbitz, SITA and Cox and Kings. 19. Significant achievements of the department or faculty or students during the past five years Institution: The Institute has successfully organized two International conferences, National Workshops and Seminars. The Institute has added on a Five Year Integrated Course in Tourism Administration to its existing MTA course. Faculty: The Faculty has represented the Institute in many National and International Conferences. Students: The Students have attained top positions in many tourism organizations.

Participation of the department in COSIP/ COHSSIP/ SAP/ CAS/ DSA/ DRS/ FIST/ etc. In 2007 the department has got a Five year Integrated Course in Tourism administration under the UGC Innovative program worth Rs 38 Lakh, plus 2 posts. 21. Plan of action of the department for the next five year. The department has approved a number of Short Term and Masters courses a. One year post graduate diploma in Event Management in Tourism and Hospitality (DEMT) b. c. One year post graduate Diploma in Adventure Tourism (DAT) Master in Hotel Management (MHM) d. One year Diploma in Multi Skilling Operations (DMHS) e. One year Diploma in Tourist Guide (DTG). 22. Any other highlights The Department is always keen to adopt some new strategic and innovative approach in the academic sphere to become one of the leading Institutions in the country.
