However, the economy took a marked turn for the worse in the second half of 2001, registering negative growth rates during the third and fourth quarters and growth for the year of only 0.6%. The downturn in the US and the ongoing weakness of the Japanese economy were crucial factors in the weaker economic performance. Economic growth picked up marginally in 2002 and gained momentum in 2003, with growth rates of 1.8% and 3.2% respectively. The economy witnessed strong growth during 2004â 2006, growing at 7.0% in However, this momentum subsided slightly in 2007, with growth of 6.4% recorded. The economy had proven resilient to the global financial market turbulence, with both the external and domestic sectors holding up well in Retail and tourism were important contributors to this impressive growth. Local consumption demand grew robustly in 2007, especially in the second half of the year, on the back of rising incomes, a robust labor market, and the strong performance of the asset markets. Private consumption expenditure grew by 7.8% in real terms for 2007 as a whole, up from 6.0% growth in 2006, the fastest growth since Demand was especially strong in consumer goods and services.
