5 Eligibility Must have completed 3 rd Year prior to program start to be eligible Must have taken 30 credits at UBC prior to the program start 70% average on 15 credits in term 1 In good standing Not on academic or non-academic discipline Full-time student 9 credits per term

6 Program Content Two modules: The European business environment The European business project Also includes: Lectures Study trips Company visits Cultural visits

7 Objectives Rationale behind the establishment of the EU Decision making process of the EU Aims of the single market Implication of the single European market on global trading patterns Major policies of the EU Monetary Union and the Single Currency Enlargement of the EU Consequences of these processes on corporate structures and strategies Privatisation and deregulation

8 Credits & International Business (IB) 6 elective credits given for the ESSP 3 credits = Senior non-commerce electives 3 credits = Senior Commerce electives All 6 credits may be used toward the international studies requirement of IB The program fulfills the international experience component of IB

9 European Business Environment Series of lectures. Topics include: Rationale behind establishment of EU Doing business in Europe European business and its environment Globalization Major policies of EU The banking crisis History and enlargement of EU Decision-making processes of EU

10 Business Project Team work 5/6 members per team Focus on a sector of industry and a target company Analyze the industry Recommend a strategy Prepare a 6,000 word report Presentation

11 Business Project Objectives Develop ability to analyze industrial sectors in different European countries Compare and contrast sector structures and organizations in different countries Discuss investment strategies for foreign firms making major investments in Europe

13 Assessment Course Assessment Written examination 50% Participation 10% Group project/presentation 40% Learning Hours Class hours 50 Project hours 30 Company visits 6 or 7

14 Grading Transcript & grades obtained provided by MBS Participants assigned a PASS or FAIL grade on UBC transcript If applying to graduate school in future University of Manchester transcript may be required

21 Documentation At this time, Canadian citizens do not need visas for the countries visited ALL nationalities should confirm visa needs with the consulates/embassies of the countries to be visited Visa costs are participants responsibilities If travelling to other countries before or after the program be sure to check visa requirements

22 2013 Program Cost 4,200 British Sterling ($6, 667 CDN on Sept 28, 2012) INCLUDES: Tuition Fees for 6 UBC credits 6 credits at UBC costs approximately: $936+ fees for domestic students $ fees for international students All course materials Accommodation & breakfast Transport within Europe Does not include: Return travel to Manchester, lunches/dinners, insurance, personal costs Potential for 200 ($317 CDN) discount
