1 November 21-22, Nebrija University. Madrid, Spain About 6wcem is the sixth edition of the Workshop on Cultural Economics, an international academic conference held annually in Spain since The Workshop was created at the initiative of several researchers in economics and management at various Spanish universities whose areas of research overlapped and who felt the need for a national forum where they could present their work and start developing joint areas of research. These organizers frequently attended international conferences and seminars of a similar nature as well as more general conferences in Spain. International research Researchers have been attending academic cultural economics conferences since the 1990 s, as the latest bibliometrics study on cultural economics research in Spain has shown1. Researchers from public universities have contributed to the progress of this discipline by presenting papers at the international conferences organized by The Association for Cultural Economics International (ACEI) and the Association Internationale de Management des Arts et de la Culture (AIMAC) and held every two years. These associations publish the Journal of Cultural Economics and the International Journal of Arts Management, respectively, which are both indexed in the Journal of Citation Reports, the former with an impact factor in 2010 of (the International Journal of Arts Management was first published in 2011). Spanish researchers have been taking on greater roles in both of these associations, be it in their internal organization, journals or in the dissemination of research. In addition, researchers at the University of Valencia organized the 2007 international AIMAC conference, and a group from the University of Valladolid has been designated to organize the ACEI conference in in a Spanish forum There is a need for a forum in Spain where to discuss ongoing research and interests, because of the research on cultural economics that is being done in this country, the extent to which researchers from other countries are integrated into those projects, how young researchers are being trained and the visibility of this discipline within economics research in Spain. CONTEXT Because this discipline has small research groups at different universities, it became necessary to create a forum for exchange that was at home, closer in distance than the international conference, and which met more frequently (once a year instead of every two years) and was less divided into economics and management. This is the kind of interaction that allows researchers from different universities to develop joint research projects, discuss preliminary results and integrate young researchers into international research environments. Since 2009, the work of Spanish researchers has increased significantly in this field, demonstrating that its quality and value is attracting greater international attention. 1 Herrero, L.C. (2009), La investigación en economía de la cultura en España: un estudio bibliométrico, Estudios de Economía Aplicada 27(1):
2 Cooperative work environments The workshop-seminar format is particularly well-suited to the presentation and discussion of current research projects. Participants are not only there to present the results of their research, as they must also give feedback and critical analysis to the other participants, and focus on one in particular. While this requires a greater effort by participants than a regular conference format, it also provides a stronger basis for debate and a higher quality of critical analysis for researchers. With the ACEI conference in Montreal, Canada this year, this workshop in Spain makes it easier for the researchers to participate in a forum. The workshop will be held on a Friday, reducing the time and money spent on travel. Lastly, the purpose of the workshop is to create an environment that attracts young researchers and fosters the exchange of ideas during other activities that are not strictly academic. International participation There is no single set language; papers can be given in English (as most are) or Spanish. To date, researchers from Colombia, Ireland, Italy and Greece have attended the workshop, and joint research projects with members from these countries, as well as Argentina, Uruguay and Chile have been presented. BACKGROUND In addition to a number of meetings at Spanish general academic conferences and specific international conferences, the origins of the workshop can be traced to the 2009 monographic issue of the Spanish journal Estudios de Economía Aplicada. Since then, there have been five editions of the workshop: in Seville (2009), Valencia (2010), Girona (2011), Bilbao (2012) and Cadiz (2013). The last three editions have attracted a growing number of academic and pre-doctoral researchers from different countries. Seville, 2009: Valencia, 2010: Girona, 2011: Bilbao Cadiz 2013: An important number of papers presented in earlier editions of the workshop were subsequently presented at international conferences and turned into articles published in journals such as the Journal of Cultural Economics, Journal of Cultural Heritage, International Journal of Tourism Research, Tourism Management, Transformations in Business in Economics Interdisciplinary contributions: The workshops generate interest in the social knowledge of culture (from a sociological and economic standpoint) as well as research that transcends territorial developments, studies of developments in business models, technological developments and new forms of cultural consumption. Research collaborations: Joint research projects by researchers at different institutions were first presented at the workshop s second edition and since then, the number of studies co-authored by researchers at different institutions has risen steadily. On the one hand, cross-disciplinary projects have been encouraged. In addition to theoretical and empirical studies in economics, researchers have contributed with studies in arts management, business administration, tourism analysis, regional economics, education economics, law, and more. On the other, efforts have been made to attract Spanish and international institutions in order to make them aware of the results of research and to receive information on public actions, such as those related to the gathering of official cultural statistics. Special care has been paid to the proper reception of papers given by students and young researchers, be they Spanish, European or Latin American. These training initiatives for young researchers could play a larger role in future workshops, considering the new curricula of Masters and doctorate degrees.
3 FUTURE Researchers in cultural economy and management in Spain want to see this activity continue, and see the strategic value in a forum that meets annually in Spain and is open to researchers and agents from other areas and other countries. The activity is therefore sustainable and will have a lasting impact over time. Scientific committee The scientific committee is composed of three highly-accredited experts from different fields within the scope of the workshop. The workshop s founders decided on a rotating committee in order to ensure a degree of stability in the guidelines for the selection of papers and topics. This year s committee members are José Navarro Ruiz (president of the 5th edition, in Cadiz), professors Víctor Fernández (UNIOVI) and Beatriz Plaza (UPV/EHU), and Elisa Hernando (UNNE) from the institution in charge of this year s edition. The four members of the scientific committee are fully-accredited by international research standards in this area and represent a variety of topics and approaches for the Workshop. The committee will review the proposals for papers that have been submitted, select the papers, assign them a moderator and create uniform work sessions. Víctor Fernández Blanco University of Oviedo Víctor Fernández has a Doctorate degree in Economics from the University of Oviedo. His fields of interest include cultural economy, efficiency and productivity. He is on the board of editors of the Journal of Cultural Economics. He has published articles in Applied Economics, the Journal of Economic Psychology, the Journal of Cultural Economics, Public Economics, Investigaciones Económicas, the International Journal of Production Economics and the European Journal of Operational Research. Beatriz Plaza Inchausti UPV/EHU Beatriz Plaza has a Doctorate degree in Economics from the University of the Basque Country / Euskal Herriko Unibertsitatea. Her current interests include cultural economy, regional development and the branding of cities and cultural goods. She has published articles in the International Journal of Urban and Regional Research, the Urban Affairs Review, Tourism and Hospitality Management, Economía Industrial, Museum News, the Journal of Urban Regeneration and Renewal, European Planning Studies, the Journal of Cultural Heritage and Tourism Management. José Ruiz Navarro University of Cadiz José Ruiz Navarro has a Doctorate degree in Economics from the University of Malaga. He is Professor of Business Administration and Chair of Entrepreneurship at the University of Cadiz.
