2 Professor Dr. Sabine Benoit (née Moeller) Professor Dr. Sabine Benoit is a Professor for Marketing at the Surrey Business School, Surrey University in Guildford, UK, and the former holder of the Lekkerland Endowed Chair for Convenience and Marketing at the EBS Business School. Dr.Benoit completed her doctorate at the University of Hagen. Her teaching and research experience in Marketing is broad and, among other topics, includes consumer behavior in service and retail setting. Link to webpage: Courses at the Business Summer: Retailing in Europe The course is split into two parts. The first part gives general insights into Retailing in Europe. The second part investigates into the Case of Wal-Mart s market entry into UK and Germany. Retailing landscapes in Europe are very diverse, e.g. in Germany the hard discounters have a market share of around 40% in food and beverages, whereas in the UK the market share is only at about 5%. Thus, as a retailer in Europe differences in consumer behaviour need to be understood. What factors promote consumption behaviour, and what factors hinder it and which channels are preferred? The course takes a close look at these and other factors by investigating in consumer behaviour in Europe and the corresponding opportunities and threats for retailing. These considerable differences across Europe were one of the major reasons Wal-Mart s strategy for the market entry in Germany was not successful, whereas it was successful in the UK. Europe s Hidden Champions: Medium Sized Companies as World Market Leaders The German economy has not been hit by the crisis in 2008/2009 as hard as other European Countries and has also recovered quicker. One of the reasons which is often mentioned are the large share of small and medium sized German companies, of which man are extremely innovative and international. These so called Hidden Champions are medium-sized, unknown companies, which are world leaders in their specific field. Many of them have sustained this world market leadership for generations, despite intense competition, financial crisis and high market dynamism. Herman Simon, the author of a book named Hidden Champions of the 21 century Success Strategies of Unknown World Market Leaders has studied those companies around the world for over 20 years. He has identified what they have in common in looking into operations, human resources management, customer service and marketing, innovation management organizational design, leadership and strategy. With this he was able to identify the reasons for their superior performance. The lecture will be based on this book and provides lessons for all stakeholders. To say it with Simons words: The Hidden champions teach us that good management means doing many small things better than the competition quietly, with determination, commitment and never-ending stamina.

3 Professor Aleksandar Fatić, PhD Aleksandar Fatic is a Research Professor at the Institute for Philosophy and Social Theory of the University of Belgrade and the Director of the Ethics Study Group of the Centre for Security Studies in Belgrade. He holds a doctorate in Philosophy from the Australian National University (ANU). Aleksandar has taught at a variety of universities at different continents, including a tenured Senior Lectureship at the University of South Australia in Adelaide, as well as lectureships at the Institute of Interdisciplinary Studies of Charles University in Prague and the Anglo-American College in Prague among others. Aleksandar was a lecturer and member of the Governing Board of the Diplomatic Academy of the Serbian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Director of the Diplomatic Academy of Montenegro. He was Director of the Institute of International Politics and Economics in Belgrade, and Editor-in-Chief of The Review of International Affairs. His primary current interests include the application of philosophical methodology to the development of professional ethics, including the ethics of counseling and therapeutic professions. Link to webpage: Ethics in Business Aims of the course: (i) to familiarise the students with basic ethical perspectives in the conduct of business, (ii) to develop in students a sensitivity to moral issues implicit in business decisions, (iii) to introduce students to basic methodologies and theories of moral thinking within a context of business. Outcomes of the course: (i) students will be equipped to address implicit issues relating to major moral dilemmas in the making of business decisions, (ii) they will be better qualified to deal with issues associated with rights, non-discrimination and the peaceful resolution of disputes in virtue of being able to understand the conceptual roots of moral controversies in business, (iii) they will have acquired the basic concepts of moral theory which will equip them to further train to become mediators or trainers in HR departments. Content of the course: The role of ethics in business; 'Social responsibility' and moral integrity: conceptual similarities and differences; Corporate loyalty; 'Team playing ; Whistle-blowing; Corruption in corporations and the moral perspective of the employees; Management by integrity and management by results: which one is more optimizing?; The role of power in practical ethics; Mechanisms of generation and maintenance of power in corporations; Power and empathy; Personal and professional identity: a problem of distinction? Structural violence in corporations; The concept of corporate virtue; The role of emotions and rational judgment in moral action; Are there specific emotions that ought to make up corporate virtue?

4 Professor Amit Karna, PhD Link to webpage: Innovation & International Strategy in Multinational Firms This daylong course focuses on the ability of multinational firms to manage innovation through a complex network of subsidiaries across the globe. The first half (morning sessions) of the course focuses on the ability of multinational firms to manage innovation through a complex network of subsidiaries across the globe. It also covers the possibilities of spreading the value chain across the globe in order to benefit from various comparative advantages that different locations offer to businesses. We will begin with a session to address the role that a foreign subsidiary of a multinational firm can play in innovation and competence creation within the firm. In the second session we will divide the group into two parts and discuss the differences between a European-origin multinational with a Japanese multinational firm and how their strategy and structure differ (Case 1). In the second half (afternoon sessions), we will discuss the possibilities of spreading the value chain across the globe in order to benefit from various comparative advantages that different locations offer to businesses. This half of the course begins with a session to address the role that a foreign subsidiary of a multinational firm can play in innovation and competence creation within the firm (Case 2). In the second session, we will discuss why innovations no longer traverse the globe in only one direction, from developed nations to developing ones; but also flow in reverse from poorer countries to rich nations (Case 3).

5 Prof. Dr. Richard Raatzsch Richard Raatzsch holds the chair for Practical Philosophy at the EBS Department of Management & Economics since Dr. Raatzsch received his doctorates from the Martin-Luther-University Halle- Wittenberg and the University of Leipzig. He has taught at several German and foreign universities, including Cambridge, Potsdam, St.Gallen, Bergen, Halle, Heidelberg, Bielefeld and Leipzig. At EBS, he acted as Vice President, Dean of EBS Business School, member of the University Senate, member of the Supervisory Board, member of the Management Board, co-director of the Centre of Responsible Economy (CORE) and co-director of the Institut für Unternehmensethik (IFU). Dr. Raatzsch is coeditor of The Wittgenstein Studies. 6 Prof. Dr. Ansgar Richter Link to webpage: Strategy, Organization & Governance in Europe In this session, we will discuss the unique features of German companies in terms of their strategy, organization and governance. We use the case study of Mannesmann, a German engineering company, in order to gain an understanding of how companies in Germany are governed, and how this governance structure is embedded in society. We then analyze the strategies of Mittelstand companies that form the backbone of the German economy, and discuss their advantages and disadvantages. Finally, we introduce two strategy frameworks the Customer Activity Cycle and the Value Map in order to analyze the strategy of Gardena, a producer of gardening equipment.

7 Thomas Saller Thomas Saller is an external lecturer in the Management & Economics department at EBS and a consultant and trainer at Förster und Netzwerk in Berlin. Mr. Saller holds an Executive MBA degree from the Durham Business School. In addition, he has been coaching and training numerous managing directors, department heads and team leaders on leadership issues. Link to webpage: Summer school course: Leadership Leadership is nothing you can teach either you have it in you or you better don t aim for a leader s position, is a common sentence. Is this really true? The lecture gives an overview about facts, findings and misconceptions about leadership and more concretely people management. It start with an overview of most important research findings and models. But despite of all interesting and necessary theory, leading others is an applied discipline. Hence, practical exercises will be an integral part of this day. The lecture will also focus on potential cultural differences. Is Leadership the same as German Führung? Or do German followers expect different behaviours than their American counter parts?

8 Prof. Dr. Tobias Schaefers Professor Dr. Tobias Schäfers is Junior Professor of Technology and Industrial Marketing at the Technical University of Dortmund. Dr. Schäfers holds a doctorate in Marketing from the EBS Business School, and is a former professor at the Automotive Institute for Management (AIM) at the EBS. Link to webpage: Automotive Marketing and Distribution Management The course starts out by providing a general overview of the relevance of the automotive industry from a European perspective, as well as a short summary of specific marketing aspects for the industry. The main part of the course then focuses on sales/distribution management as one of the core functions of automotive marketing. This includes an introduction into the fundamentals of distribution channel management, the design and management of a distribution network, the management of channel conflicts, relationship management between OEMs and dealership networks. Moreover, the role of the internet for automotive sales will be covered. All topics will also be discussed using a case study of a German car manufacturer s activities in a European market.

9 Prof. Dr. André Schmidt Professor Dr. André Schmidt is the Dean for Students of the Faculty of Economics, and holds the Chair of Macroeconomics and International Economics, at the University of Witten/Herdecke. Dr. Schmidt completed his doctorate in Economics at the University of Hohenheim. His areas of expertise include competition policy, environmental policy, European economic policy, and international trade policy. Link to webpage: Link to EBS webpage: The Economics of European Integration The course deals with economics and politics of the European integration. The students will gain knowledge about the decision making process, the trade and competition policy and the fiscal federal system. The European Financial Landscape The aim of this course is to give students a comprehensive overview of recent changes in the European financial system and a profound understanding of their economic implications. The first part of the lecture analyzes the various financial institutions that constitute a financial system their role as well as their interrelations. We then study the specificities of the European financial system and contrast it with other major financial systems. Finally the lecture turns to the changes that the European financial system underwent after the introduction of the Euro and in the run-up to the recent financial crisis. In particular we will discuss developments in corporate finance, banking and retail investment.
