3 3 Executive Summary This report benchmarks the Journal of Academy of Marketing Science (JAMS) against the journals included in the Financial Times (FT) journal list; in 2016, JAMS was added to the newly expanded list of 50 FT journals. The report evaluates multiple objective performance measures of journal quality (impact factor, acceptance rate, international ratings, and faculty member survey), two indicators of journal coverage (by country and business discipline), and internal performance metrics. Overall, based on the objective indicators of journal quality, JAMS performed better than a majority of the existing FT journals. Specifically, JAMS was: 7th of all FT journals and 1st of Marketing journals in 2016 for 2-year impact factor as well as 5-year impact factor, remaining the top-ranked in Marketing even without self-citations; Equal to or better than 82% of all FT journals based on five (Germany, UK, France, Australia, and New Zealand) international ranking studies. These indicators of quality suggest that JAMS is not only significantly improving, but also often ranks in the top of all FT and FT Marketing journals. Based on the number of countries represented by authors versus other Marketing journals on the FT list, JAMS is tied for the second highest number of countries represented in Overall, 39% of the authors published in JAMS are from outside the United States, reflecting its broad international coverage. In our survey of faculty members 85% of the business schools count JAMS for tenure. Internal data on JAMS show continued growth in submissions from 319 in 2007 to 491 in 2016, and while submission numbers have increased every year over this period, the time to review has decreased since In 2016, the first review round was completed in 44.1 days on average (reviewers, AE, and editor) In summary, JAMS is in the top half or better of FT journals based on objective indicators of quality, and its articles come from a broad base of international authors. It often outperforms existing Marketing FT journals as well as other Marketing journals not presently on the FT list.

4 4 Impact Factor Description and source: The impact factor is an indicator of journal citation rates that is reported annually by Thomson Reuters in their Journal Citation Reports. It is a measure of the frequency with which the average article in a journal has been cited in a particular year or period. 1 Journal impact factors are used by many academic departments and libraries as a quantitative quality measure in ranking the prestige of journals; the higher the number of the impact factor, the more influence the journal is perceived to have in its field. The 2-year impact factor reflects citations in the reported year to articles published in the previous two years, while the 5-year impact factor reflects citations in the reported year to articles published in the previous five years. For this study, impact factor data were retrieved from the Thomson Reuters database for the list of Financial Times (FT) journals. Results and conclusion: JAMS is ranked 7th out of all journals on the FT-50 list based on the 2-year impact factor for Based on the 5-year impact factor in 2016, JAMS ranked 6th of the 50 FT journals, reflecting its strength over the past five years. Reducing the comparison to just the five marketing journals on the FT list as well as the Journal of Retailing, JAMS is currently the 1st ranked marketing journal in terms of 2- year impact factor and 1st in terms of 5-year impact factor in 2016 as shown in the table below. 6 6 Acceptance Rates Description and source: Many rankings lists and departmental promotion and tenure committees take into account a journal s acceptance rate as one factor in assessing its quality; a lower acceptance rate is typically assumed to reflect a higher quality journal as it indicates exclusivity. Acceptance rates for the 45 FT journals plus JAMS and Journal of Retailing were retrieved from Cabell s Directory, an online database of submission information and publication data collected from journals. Most acceptance rates were recorded by Cabell s in May 2014; some in For journals that listed a range of acceptance rate (e.g., 5-7%), the lowest number in the range was used for ranking purposes. Results and conclusion: As shown in the summary table below of top 10 journals, based on acceptance rates, when comparing JAMS to the existing FT list of 45 journals, JAMS is in the top 5 journals in terms of having the lowest acceptance rate (see Appendix B for full details of all journals). This indicates that JAMS, which receives over 500 submissions per year, is on par with top journals for exclusivity in accepting articles for publication. 7 7 International Rankings Description and source: Many institutions and countries create their own rating systems to judge journal quality, taking into account criteria such as impact factor, acceptance rate, reputation, and their faculty s publication outlets. Non-US rankings indicate a journal s standing across the international academic world. For our benchmarking study we attempted to capture ranking studies representing several major geographic regions outside of the United States including: Germany, UK, France, and Australia/New Zealand. Rating information was retrieved from the most recent versions of the rankings complied by each association, as discussed below. Results and conclusion: The 2015 Verband der Hochschullehrer für Betriebswirtschaft (VhB) list, 3 a ranking developed by the Association of University Professors of Business in German-speaking countries, gives JAMS its second-highest rating, which ranks JAMS equal to or better than 51% of journals on the FT list as shown in the summary table below. In the British Chartered Association of Business Schools (CABS)Academic Journal Guide JAMS is rated in the second tier of five levels, a ranking indicating journals publishing the most original and best executed research ; only 6.1% of the 1,401 journals evaluated by ABS receive this ranking (91.5% of journals on the list receive a ranking lower than 4). 5 Also in the UK, the 2012 Cranfield School of Management journal recommendations list 6 rates JAMS equal to or higher than all journals on the FT list. The 2012 journal list from AERES, 7 the French evaluation agency for research and higher education, gives JAMS its highest rating, which puts it on par with all 38 of the FT journals that are included on the AERES list. The Australian Business Deans Council (ABDC) Journal Rankings List 8 from November 2013 gives JAMS its highest ranking, which puts JAMS on a rating level equal to or better than all 44 FT journals listed by the ABDC. Also in the Australia/New Zealand region, the 2011 University of Queensland (UQ) ranking list 9 gives JAMS its highest rating, which ranks JAMS equal to or better than all 39 journals on the FT list that are evaluated by UQ. Most other geographies use one of these six studies in their country in the absence of a specific country-based study. 3 Available at 4 Available at 5 See 6 PDF available at 7 PDF available at pdf. 8 Available at 9 PDF available at this list is a combination of the 2007 UQ list and the 2010 Excellence in Research Australia list compiled by the Australian Research Council (see

In other words, JAMs is ranked equal to or better than 82% of the FT journals based on these 6 international ranking studies. See Appendix C for full details of the rankings for all FT journals. For a description of the ratings scales and what data/information is included in their journal evaluations, see each association s website as listed in the footnotes.

9 9 International Coverage Description and source: A high degree of international coverage in terms of the percent of published authors located outside of North America indicates that a journal has broad reach and appeal. The country of all authors published in 2014 issues of the five FT marketing journals, plus JAMS and Journal of Retailing, was recorded by accessing the title page of each article from each journal s online archives. The percentage of authors outside of North America was then calculated by dividing the number of authors from countries other than the United States and Canada by the total number of authors published in 2014 in each journal. Results and conclusion: As shown in the summary table below, compared to the other top marketing journals, JAMS is tied for the second highest number of countries represented among authors published in 2014 and for the third highest percent of authors outside of North America. See Appendix D for the full table of published author countries. This demonstrates JAMS broad international coverage and appeal to non-us authors. 10 10 Faculty Member Survey Description and source: When business schools consider faculty members publication records for promotion and tenure, they often have internal journal lists to judge the quality/value of each published article. To collect data on how business schools rate JAMS for promotion and tenure, we did a survey of JAMS Editorial Board Members asking whether JAMS counts for promotion and tenure at their institution, the average number of faculty who would consider publishing in JAMS, how their institution compares JAMS with the FT-listed journals, and whether JAMS has an opportunity to be raised in their institution s rankings. We received 55 survey responses from institutions across the globe, representing 10 different countries. Results and conclusion: Our survey shows that JAMS is well-regarded by business schools worldwide; at 85% of the 55 institutions, JAMS publications count toward promotion/tenure considerations. Also, as shown in the summary table below, on average 10 faculty members from these institutions would consider submitting their research to JAMS. Respondents from 62% of the institutions foresee an opportunity to raise JAMS standing; of the other 38% of institutions, JAMS is already considered elite at nearly half of these remaining institutions (thus can t be raised higher in standings). 11 11 FT Journal List Balance across Major Business Disciplines Description and source: The FT journal list includes journals from across the range of business disciplines; for our report we evaluated whether the journal representation for each major discipline is representative of the proportion of professors employed in that discipline. Data on the number of professors for each major business discipline were retrieved from the AACSB International s 2014 Global Business School Data Guide, which lists the number of fulltime business faculty by discipline for all of AACSB s members. 10 AACSB International is an organization that provides internationally recognized accreditation for business schools; it has 716 accredited member institutions in 48 countries and territories. 11 We included only the five major domains of business schools (Accounting, Finance, Management, Marketing, Operations/MIS). Discipline Summary of Professors per Business Discipline # of Professors % of Professors # of FT Journals % of FT Journals # Professors per FT Journal Management % % 512 Operations/MIS % % 680 Accounting % % 921 Marketing % % 1035 Finance % % 1118 Results and conclusion: As seen in the table above and Appendix F, while Marketing makes up 20.8% of fulltime business school professors in the AACSB data, Marketing journals comprise only 15.6% of the FT list, indicating that the Marketing professorate is not proportionally represented on the FT list. See Appendix G and Appendix H for more information on the categorization of business disciplines in the FT list and AACSB professor data, respectively. More specifically, when comparing the number of professors per FT journal, Management has only 512 professors per journal, followed by Operations/MIS (680) and Accounting (921), while Marketing has 1035 professor per journal over twice Management. The only domain with a worse representation per faculty on the FT list is Finance at 1118 professors per FT journal. If JAMS was added to the FT list, then Operations/MIS, Accounting, and Marketing would all have 6 FT journals. 10 See the faculty numbers are available on page 31 of the 2014 guide. 11 See

12 12 JAMS Internal Processes and Performance Description and source: Internal data reflecting JAMS processes and performance were compiled by Editor-in- Chief Tomas Hult in December 2014 from the journal s Editorial Manager online submission system and publication archive and updated by Managing Editor Anne Hoekman in June Results and conclusion: JAMS internal data show continued growth in submissions from 319 in 2007 to 491 in 2014 (see table below and Appendix I for further details). While submission numbers have increased, time to review has decreased since In 2016, the first review was completed in 44.1 days on average. JAMS acceptance rate has decreased since 2008, as described in the Acceptance Rates section. Further, the proportion of theory-focused articles has increased, allowing JAMS to increase its leadership in developing academic theory in the marketing discipline.
