2 Coventry University in the United Kingdom, through the School of Continuing and Professional Education (SCOPE) at the City University of Hong Kong (CityU) offers a 2-year, part-time programme leading to the BSc (Hons) in Aviation Management. Coventry University The history of Coventry University can be traced back over 150 years. The academic structure of the University comprises three faculties and one school: Faculty of Engineering and Computing; Faculty of Business; Environment and Society; Faculty of Health and Life Sciences; School of Art and Design. Currently around 18,000 students are studying at University. There are about 200 academic staff and 150 support staff currently in The Faculty of Engineering and Computing. The Faculty offers a board range of programmes within the field of Engineering and Computing, including Foundation, BSc, BEng, MSc and MBA, as well as a range of research programmes. The programmes are highly regarded by many companies for their practicality and are based on a sound theoretical foundation to help students achieve their maximum potential. A Record of Teaching Excellence The Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) assessment rated the teaching of Coventry excellent. The Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) ranked several subject areas of Coventry research at the highest rating. The University won the Queen s Anniversary Prize for Higher & Further Education. Recently, Coventry University has been crowned the Entrepreneurial University of the Year at the 2011Times Higher Education Awards, and the Outstanding Support for Students award. About the programme The Full-time mode of this progamme has already been launched in 2007 and has more than 150 graduates and 77 current students. In response to the increasing training demand of the industry, the Programme Team has officially launched the programme in Part-time cohort in September We have recruited talent part-time students who are working in different managerial and functional roles of a range of well-known companies and airlines, such as Airport Authority Hong Kong, Hong Kong Aircraft Engineering Company Ltd., Japan Airlines, Singapore Airlines and Dragonair. Programme Aims and Objectives The aims of the programme are: To provide students with the knowledge and skills required to deal with management problems in aviation related industries through exploring the inter-dependence between air-transport and logistics operations; To give particular emphasis to the use of analytical techniques in tackling current and future issues in the industry from an international perspective; To enhance students lifelong-learning skills for personal development and contribution to the society at large. Student Support from CityU Teaching will be delivered mainly by CityU full-time academic staff and experienced industry practitioners with input to teaching from Coventry University. The programme will be held at SCOPE Kowloon Tong Learning Centre and SCOPE Tsim Sha Tsui East Learning Centre. Students will be provided with access to CityU s Library (including electronic resources) and Computing Services Centre located on campus. Students can also utilize the Resources Centre managed by SCOPE at its Learning Centres. Coventry University, UK

3 Programme Structure The programme structure consists of a series of core modules. In order to further benefit the students, two Add-vantage modules focusing on the key transferrable skills of English and communication are designed to improve students employability. Students being briefed on the operations of the Airport Emergency Centre at HKIA, during a recent visit to the site. Programme Delivery The programme will normally span 5 trimesters (for students who need to take 200 credits) or 6 trimesters (for students who need to take 240 credits). Each trimester follows a regular structure of 12 weeks. Students with a non-aviation background shall take the first module 292SE Aviation Management in July to August Lecturers from Coventry University will attend the orientation at the start of the programme and play an important role in preparing the students for the Honours Degree Project. They work alongside academic staff from CityU so as to ensure the students best chance of success.

4 BSc (Hons) Aviation Management (Part-Time Mode) Curriculum Outline 200ADD Add-vantage Module (English) This module is for non-native speakers of English with specific aims to develop their communicative skills in academic and professional contexts. Students are encouraged to build upon their knowledge of English to further develop their receptive and productive skills so that they can use the language with more accuracy and fluency in the university setting as well as in their future workplace. 205KM Management and Organisational Behaviour The module aims to provide an understanding of the practical and professional issues associated with organisational behaviour and how these relate to effective management practice. The module demonstrates the application of behavioural science within the workplace and emphasises the role of management as a core integrating activity. It will provide an understanding of the human aspects of the management of change. 207KM Supply Chain and Logistics Management The module will enable students to develop an understanding of the fundamental principles and concepts of supply chain management (SCM). Objectives of efficient SCM include achieving high productivity, high quality and seamless transfer between stages of the design and build process, and efficient delivery to the customer. Students will gain an insight into the roles of professionals in a supply chain. The module will also describe a range of practical and effective measures for competitive supply chain management. Students will also develop an understanding of the wider implications of SCM on society, the environment, and effects of globalisation. 209KM Introduction to Research Methods This module introduces students to the process of business research and decision making. It provides an understanding of the practical and professional issues associated with the analysis, design and choice of solutions to business problems, and demonstrates the need for formal planning and management in the development of business projects. Students will be introduced to creating a research design, carrying out a literature survey, and selecting methods for data collection and analysis. The module is intended to underpin final stage honours projects and will include an introduction to both quantitative and qualitative research methods. 292SE Aviation Management This module outlines the organisation of the airline industry and the various factors that affect the management and operation of international and regional carriers. The problem of financing airline operations and investment, and the different marketing strategies used by airline business are also introduced. The interdependence between airlines, aircraft manufacturers, and airport authorities is explored. 298SE Aviation Safety, Security & Emergency Planning The module explores current approaches through regulation, management of human factors and the use of technology to safety and security issues applicable to aircraft, airports, flights and airline operations. It further considers essential procedures for coping with air and ground emergencies. 299SE Airport Passenger and Cargo Operations The module views airports as complex systems aimed at delivering a service to passengers and air freight. The main operational procedures for handling air cargo and passenger throughput in airport terminals are presented. The module also explores how physical characteristics impose constraints on aircraft, the services provided to airlines, to passengers in the terminal buildings, and to air cargo companies. 300ADD Add-vantage Module (Effective Communication) The aim of this module is to provide students with an understanding of the principles and techniques which will assist them to enhance personal communication skills, and to require them to analyse and apply appropriate communication strategies. Participants will be given the opportunity to practice these skills in a safe environment and reflect on current performance and future development need. Students who undertake this module may be in a stronger position to secure employment. Cross-sector employers have identified effective communication as an essential skill they look for when recruiting graduates. 303KM Project Management This module introduces students to project management and provides a foundation for developing project skills, both human and technical, that will enable them to work on a variety of projects, primarily with a computer or knowledge based element. Students are encouraged from the outset to see the role of the project manager within the broader perspective of strategic business management, understanding where projects come from and why they are selected. The roles of both the purchaser and the supplier of a computer or knowledge based project is recognised and explored. The importance of de facto project management scheduling skills, quality and estimating standards is emphasised. The human and change aspects of projects are considered in order that the student may understand the effect on morale, productivity and quality of management decisions. 307KM Global Logistics Management This module examines a variety of approaches to the management of logistics operations that can be used to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of the supply chain. Emphasis is placed on the international context and the development of new approaches using IT to improve the flow and impact of information. 392SE Aviation Strategy and Planning The module explores the application of business strategy principles and practice in the aviation industry with specific reference to current developments in the ownership and operation of international and national airline businesses and route development. 395SE Human Factors in Aviation This module aims to provide students with an understanding of human factors and considers their impact on various parts of the aviation industry. Psychological, physical and social factors can all have an impact on human performance and behaviour. This can cause safety problems and accidents through pilot error or poor maintenance but also affects other parts of the industry. Students will gain an understanding of the need to take human factors into account in relation to management, training and design as well as an understanding of theoretical models of human error and techniques for measuring human performance. 391KM Project The project module will be a major individual study at Honours level in a subject related to the degree award. It serves as the main vehicle for integration of the various programme modules and provides a focus for practical application of the knowledge gained on the programme. Each project must be unique and will therefore vary in scope and emphasis. Projects are expected to be a substantial practical problem-solving exercise or a research study which require students to demonstrate their skills in organisation, time-management, investigation and communication. The Honours Project provides the opportunity to extend knowledge and experience in a specialised area.

5 Assessment The assessment of students is by means of coursework and examinations. The weighting of these two components varies among modules. Admission Requirements Entry Point 1 (200 credits) Candidates should possess a HD/AD in relevant discipline. Related HD/AD graduates with at least one year of work experience at the airport may only need to take 180 credits. They may be exempted from the module 299SE (Airport Passenger and Cargo Operations). Entry Point 2 (240 credits) Candidates should possess an IVE Diploma (or equivalent) in relevant discipline with 3 years post-diploma working experience at the airport.
