2 Student Signature Parent Signature Date Course Description 2013/2014 Economics and Personal Finance (6120/36 weeks) Note: As enacted by the General Assembly of 2011 and prescribed by the Board of Education, beginning with students who enter the ninth-grade class of and beyond, students shall earn one (1) standard credit in Economics and Personal Finance in fulfillment of the graduation requirement for the Standard and Advanced Studies diplomas. The one (1) standard credit earned for the Economics and Personal Finance course (6120) shall count only once towards graduation requirements. Suggested Grade Level: 11, 12 Online & Blended Instruction Students learn how to navigate the financial decisions they must face and to make informed decisions related to career exploration, budgeting, banking, credit, insurance, spending, taxes, saving, investing, buying/leasing a vehicle, living independently, and inheritance. Development of financial literacy skills and an understanding of economic principles will provide the basis for responsible citizenship and career success. In addition to developing personal finance skills, students in the 36-week course will also study basic occupational skills and concepts in preparation for entry-level employment in the field of finance. The course incorporates all economics and financial literacy objectives included in the Code of Virginia B. Virtual Virginia Economics and Personal Finance The Virginia Department of Education, with the generous support of the Virginia 529 College Savings Plan and the Virginia Bankers Association Education Foundation, has developed a comprehensive, cutting-edge, online program aligned to the Virginia Standards of Learning for Economics and Personal Finance. This program supports school compliance with the new requirement that each student in Virginia complete an economics and personal finance course before graduation. The online course can be used as self-paced and auto-graded instruction with minimal teacher intervention or as a textbook replacement for teacher-led instruction. It includes cartoons, interactive graphics, and a myriad of interactions and assessments that enrich the learning experience and that provide re-teaching opportunities. A rich simulation environment also allows students to practice their newly acquired skills through characters that make economic decisions. The course is available to all Virginia schools and was developed using standard SCORM modules, which allow deployment through any compliant learning management system.
