2 Welcome to the Department of Management The Department offers an undergraduate degree (BSc Management), a portfolio of 9 Master s degrees, and an outstanding PhD programme. An academic community within LSE The Department of Management is a fullyintegrated academic unit within a worldleading social science university, ranked #2 in the world in this field (QS World University Rankings 2014/15). As such, it is a core part of LSE s academic community, and develops and delivers the School s degree programmes in the field of management, as well as being the centre of academic study of management and organisations. Faculty and students in the Department benefit from close collaboration and cross-disciplinary links with the other departments across the School. Its teaching is fully integrated into the School s overall teaching programme, which is delivered by more than 20 academic departments, including core business disciplines with the Department of Finance, the Department of Accounting, and a full range of other social science disciplines from social policy and government to philosophy and anthropology. Its Master s portfolio includes a two-year Master s in Management (the only UK programme to be integrated with the CEMS Master s in International Management), as well as business-oriented Master s degrees with economics as the unifying discipline, and a range of oneyear specialist Master s degrees. It also contributes to the LSE Summer School, LSE Executive Summer School, University of London International Programme, and the TRIUM Executive MBA. Research The Department s faculty aims to produce outstanding scholarly research about organisations and management as well as use research methods and knowledge to address problems in business, government and society. The main subject areas of research within the Department are employment relations and human resource management, information systems and innovation, managerial economics and strategy, marketing, organisational behaviour, and public management. Faculty in the Department publish their research in leading academic journals for these various subject areas. 4 Meet our Programme Director Prof Diane Reyniers, Programme Director 1What are the core learnings your students will take away from the programme? One of our main aims is that students on the programme develop an understanding of global business. In addition, students will learn how to critically analyse strategic situations as well as apply flexibility and adaptability in different environments. 2 What is your strategic vision for the programme, and where do you see it in the next 5 years? I have three main objectives, which would build on what is already a very successful programme. The first is to reinforce the emphasis on analytical skills, clear expression of ideas and critical thinking as part of the programme. The second is to further grow the programme with a larger selection of exchange opportunities. The third is to establish a formal networking scheme for current and future students and alumni How does the programme contribute to LSE s core philosophy, understanding the causes of things? Our teaching and assessment methods reflect that we value thinking over memorising. Students are required to show they truly understand the material and can apply their newly acquired knowledge in new settings. We strongly encourage originality of thought, creativity and a critical attitude towards the literature. How does this programme differ fundamentally from other similar degrees, such as an MBA? The programme is definitely unique in the fact that it offers an exchange term at top business schools in the context of a one-year programme. As all students already have a management or related degree, we allow a lot of flexibility and students can tailor their curriculum towards their career goals and interests. What would you say to a prospective student thinking of applying to join the programme next year? The programme is very competitive with a large number of highly qualified applicants for relatively few places. We strongly recommend that you understand all the requirements and address them in your application to maximise your chances of being offered a place. Don t forget that we put a lot of weight on academic achievement and GMAT/GRE performance. One of the key features of the programme is that you will be studying alongside MBA students during the exchange; therefore some work experience is needed. 06 MSc International Management MSc International Management 07

6 Programme structure This programme is distinctive and comprehensive. You will spend the first term taking a compulsory core course, and up to three elective courses from a selection of world-leading academic departments at LSE. The second term is spent abroad, at a top business school either in China or the US, as part of the IMEX exchange programme: In the final part of the programme, you will complete a 10,000 word dissertation, to be submitted in the first week of September. 7 Profiles The class The programme attracts students from all over the world. It s designed for those with a background in Management, or a related subject such as Economics. Most will have just completed their undergraduate Bachelor s degree; a few will be in the early stages of their careers with up to four years experience. Classes are small and highly selective, creating a challenging and vibrant learning environment. Students Meet two of our International Management students Ronan Curran and Zana Nanic. Ronan Curran (UK) MSc International Management class of The main factors which motivated my decision to study at LSE were: the strong reputation of the School amongst employers internationally, the diversity of the student population and the excellent array of extra-curricular activities on offer at the University. I was particularly interested in the MSc International Management programme as I believe the wide range of electives on offer provide students with the perfect opportunity to tailor the programme to suit their own interests and career ambitions. For example, I have been able to combine outside electives in Corporate Finance and Asset Markets with modules offered by the Department of Management, providing me with a perfect platform for a career in either finance or consulting. In addition, the programme offers the unique opportunity to spend a semester abroad following an MBA programme at a leading University in North America or Asia. Personally, I have chosen to attend the Guanghua School of Management in Beijing as I believe the experience gained from living in a foreign culture and political environment will prove invaluable in my future career. I have thoroughly enjoyed my experience at LSE so far and would highly recommend both the school and programme to anyone considering postgraduate study. Zana Nanic (Italy) MSc International Management class of Being born in Croatia and raised in Italy and having completed part of my education in California and worked in New York and Singapore, I consider myself international to the core. As such I was looking for a Master s programme with a strong international component, an impeccable reputation and the academic rigor. The MSc in International Management at LSE was exactly that. IMEX is two programmes embedded into one. The first programme is the LSE semester where the focus is on academic writing, theory and abstract concepts and you spend most of your time reading and researching. The range of subjects covers almost everything from mathematical finance to evolutionary behaviour. Business subjects are debated theoretically and the emphasis is on understanding. While at LSE, I attended two classes on information systems learning the theory behind computer architecture and IT; an economic class focused on globalisation in which we discusses the classical models of international economics; and, a class on digital business and its implications for society. The second program is the MBA semester at a school of your choice: you attend as second year MBA along with students with on average five years of work experience. Regarding the subjects, you can chose amongst management subjects from strategy, leadership, finance, economics, marketing, operations, etc. The emphasis is on cases studies, speaking up in class and getting work done. The classes are very interactive expect to be cold called at all times and all your assignments are group projects. In terms of culture, each MBA school available has its own specific culture and attracts certain people. In my case, the experience at Kellogg has been fantastic and I intend to go back there later on in life. After graduation, I am joining a consulting firm. In the long run, I intend to go back to academia for my PhD and become a professor in a Business School. I have a general passion for business and writing; thus, business publishing and teaching is where I belong.
