To help, a umber of usolicited doors have also stepped i. Oe such door is Arvid Phatak, professor of geeral ad strategic maagemet ad executive director for the Ceter for Iteratioal Busiess Educatio Research at the Fox School. I kow the coditio of villages i Idia is quite differet from those of the cities ad schoolig is very difficult, said Phatak, who also hails from Idia. I was impressed that a colleague of mie would have the foresight ad heart to embark o this missio of educatig girls i a Idia village ad givig them a opportuity to go to school. This marks the secod time the Fox School has bee recogized by The Ecoomist i its highly selective rakig of global MBA programs. I the regio, the Fox School ad the Wharto School of the Uiversity of Pesylvaia were the oly two Philadelphia-area MBA programs to be raked. 3 We are pleased The Ecoomist has recogized the Fox School amog the top schools i the atio ad the world, said M. Learig a foreig laguage is becomig icreasigly importat for today s college studets. I a effort to highlight the importace of studyig foreig laguages, area studies ad culture, Temple Ceter for Iteratioal Busiess Educatio Research (CIBER) ad Uiversity Foreig Laguage Departmets hosted 250 area high school studets ad teachers o Temple s Mai Campus to celebrate World Laguages Day o March 29, This was the 10th year Temple has hosted the evet. The aual daylog evet icluded guest speakers ad presetatios o study abroad programs, Lati America studies; history of Weimar Germay, Cofucia Ethics; itroductory classes i Korea, Arabic, Russia ad Chiese, as well as visits to regular uiversity laguage classes ad special laboratory multi-media tech sessios. Iteratioal busiess is the fastest-growig major i the Fox School of Busiess, with more tha 600 studets erolled. Studets who are studyig iteratioal busiess are required to demostrate proficiecy i a foreig laguage, said Kimberly Cahill, director of the Fox Busiess School Istitute for Global Maagemet Studies ad CIBER. The U.S. is the oly idustrialized atio that routiely graduates studets from high school who lack kowledge of a foreig laguage. Foreig laguage skills, especially critical laguages like Chiese ad Arabic, combied with itercultural sesitivity, are essetial to U.S. competitiveess ad atioal security i today s global eviromet, Cahill added. Participatig teachers were very iterested i global culture ad the importace of exposig their studets to diverse world evets ad cultures. We were fortuate to be part of the laguage day at Temple. The program was culturally ad liguistically eye opeig, stated oe high school teacher. It was a pleasure to uderstad why there is a importace i learig a foreig laguage. This ispired all the studets to cotiue workig towards their goals ad to cotiue to expatiate their kowledge i foreig laguage, the teacher cotiued. I a post-evet survey completed by participatig teachers, 71% idicated that their studets were more iclied to cotiue with foreig laguage study ad to apply to Temple Uiversity. Nearly 60% said that Temple s World Laguage Day ecouraged high school studets to cosider studyig abroad. World Laguage Day was sposored by Temple CIBER, Pe CIBER, Temple Uiversity s Vice Provost for Udergraduate Studies, Udergraduate Admissios, Iteratioal Programs, ad the College of Liberal Arts.

4 INTERNATIONAL FINANCIAL REPORTING STANDARDS The FOX Iteratioal Accoutig CONFERENCE If there is oe thig everyoe ca agree o about the Iteratioal Fiacial Reportig Stadards (IFRS), it s that there are great challeges ahead for U.S. corporatios, accoutig firms ad uiversities. 4 That was oe of the primary messages coveyed by early every speaker at the Fox School Accoutig Coferece, held Jue 6 ad 7 at Temple s Howard Gittis Studet Ceter ad sposored by the school s Departmet of Accoutig ad by Temple CIBER. More tha 100 professioals ad academics atteded the coferece, which combied pael discussios o the first day with research presetatios o the secod. The coferece was orgaized by Temple accoutig faculty members Rajiv Baker, Sudipta Basu, Elizabeth Gordo, Jayathi Krisha, Eric Press ad Sheri Risler. I welcomig attedees, Baker, the Merves Chair i Accoutig ad Iformatio Techology at the Fox School, commeted o the lik betwee accoutig practice ad academia. Oe of our goals at the Fox School is to build a strog bridge betwee the school ad the busiess world, somethig this coferece helps us achieve, said Baker. Over the ext two days, we will have a spirited discussio aroud a issue of cotemporary importace as well as share some of the cuttig-edge research takig place i our field, he added. Gatherigs such as this help stregthe the coectio betwee Temple Uiversity ad the accoutig professio. This is just the first of may cofereces we pla to hold as we cotiue to establish the Fox School as oe of the top ceters of accoutig research i the coutry. Fox School Dea M. Moshe Porat echoed these setimets. Oe of the purposes of this coferece is to promote syergy betwee academia ad the greater accoutig commuity, he said. With the SEC curretly cosiderig the implemetatio of ew U.S. accoutig stadards i aligmet with iteratioal stadards, our coferece today is certaily topical. The first day of the coferece cetered Elizabeth Gordo, associate professor of accoutig, speaks to participats at the Fox School s Jue 08 accoutig coferece. o IFRS, its beefits ad challeges, ad whether the Uited States was ready to accept its implemetatio. The IFRS are accoutig stadards that may feel will brig much-eeded cosistecy to reported fiacial data ad allow for a better flow of ivestmet capital across atioal borders. More tha 100 coutries have already adopted IFRS, with the U.S. beig a otable exceptio. The two pael discussios were The Beefits ad Challeges of IFRS Worldwide ad Is the U.S. Ready for IFRS? Each pael was made up of speakers from the accoutig field as well as promiet researchers from prestigious uiversities icludig Mary Barth of Staford Uiversity ad the Iteratioal Accoutig Stadards Board; Kathlee Bauma of PricewaterhouseCoopers; Scott Hartma of Erst & Youg; Robert Lipe of the Fiacial Accoutig Stadards Board; Liza McAdrew-Moberg of the U.S. Securities ad Exchage Commissio; Paul Muter of KPMG; Sherif Sakr of Deloitte & Touche; Shyam Suder of Yale Uiversity; ad Ross Watts of the Massachusetts Istitute of Techology. Most paelists agreed that IFRS offers may challeges, but it also offers may beefits, icludig the provisio of better iformatio to ivestors ad a stadardizatio of practices throughout the world. May of our iteratioal cliets previously used differet stadards, said Bauma, of PricewaterhouseCoopers. It was like Christmas for me whe they all wet to IFRS. Paelists discussed the cocer i the Uited States that IFRS is too priciple based i that it establishes broad rules as well as dictates specific treatmets. This is i cotrast to the U.S. Geerally Acceptable Accoutig Priciples (U.S. GAAP), which as oe paelist said, come i a stack as high as I am tall. Watts, of MIT, was the otable skeptic o the first pael, otig that it s ot clear that oe size fits all whe it comes to accoutig stadards. There are variatios across coutries for good ecoomic reasos, icludig differeces i the orgaizatio of firms ad the differeces i legal arragemets ad govermets, he said. I thik the beefits of IFRS are likely to be sigificatly less tha advertised. Cotiued o page 5

5 BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES IN AFRICA Accoutig Coferece Cotiued from page 4 Participats o both paels agreed that, if ad whe the Uited States sigs o to IFRS (ad most expect it will evetually), educatio will play a large role i its success or failure. Corporatios will have to be educated, accoutats will have to be educated, ad colleges will have to chage some of their curriculum i the future, said Erst & Youg s Hartma. But the fudametal questio remais, is the Uited States ready for IFRS? The geeral cosesus of the paelists: yes ad o. We re ot ready but we better start gettig ready, the FASB s Lipe said. We have oe chace to trasitio from U.S. GAAP to IFRS, ad we eed to prepare a blueprit for that trasitio. The accoutig coferece cotiued o the secod day with six presetatios by the followig researchers: Mary Barth, Staford, Accoutig Quality: Iteratioal Accoutig Stadards ad U.S. GAPP Elizabeth Gordo, Temple, Could IFRS Replace U.S. GAPP? A Compariso of Earigs Attributes ad Iformativeess i the U.S. Market Shyam Suder, Yale, Moopoly or Competitio: Stadard Settig i the Private ad Public Sector Rajiv Baker, Temple, DuPot Aalysis, Sustaiability of Competitive Advatage ad Valuatio Ross Watts, MIT, Evidece o the Effects of Uverifiable Fair-Value Accoutig Jayathi Krisha, Temple, Profitability, Growth, Coservatism ad the Reliability of Accoutig Numbers The Secod Aual Coferece, i collaboratio with Temple CIBER s Iteratioal Accoutig FDIB (Faculty Developmet i Iteratioal Busiess) will be held Jue 3 5, Post-Coflict Africa Summit: Ope for Resposible Busiess O Thursday, February 21, Temple Uiversity welcomed a group of local ad atioal busiess people, govermet represetatives, studets, ad faculty i a itesive discussio ad aalysis of busiess opportuities i post-coflict Africa. The coferece was orgaized by three studet professioal orgaizatios Iteratioal Busiess Associatio, Studets for Resposible Busiess, ad the Fracophoe Studets Professioal Orgaizatio i a collaborative recogitio of the importace of begiig a dialog about doig busiess i Africa resposibly. Amog the otable guests presetig at the coferece were the Hoorable Staley Straughter, Chairma of the Mayor s Commissio o Africa ad Caribbea Immigrat Affairs ad Hoorary Cosul of Guiea, Aliso Germak of the Overseas Private Ivestmet Corporatio (OPIC), ad Rupa Modi, Maager of East Coast Developmet, Kiva. I her welcomig remarks, Nicole DeSilvis, former Seior Iteratioal Trade Cosultat i Temple s Small Busiess Developmet Ceter ad curret Commercial Officer for the U.S. & Foreig Commercial Service, explaied that the umerous coutries of Africa provide ot oly iterestig ad potetially lucrative ivestmets for small- to medium- sized U.S. busiesses, but that iteratioal ivestmet ito these coutries sigificatly helps i the restoratio of peace ad stability i areas with such turbulet histories. Additioally, ecoomic growth withi these poor atios assists i alleviatio of the iteratioal problem of poverty. A select group of three Temple studets from differet Africa coutries (Gabo, Cameroo ad Rwada) preseted persoal views of their home coutries i a sessio titled, Africa from my les. The studets ethusiasm ad faith i the social ad ecoomic potetial of the Africa cotiet was apparet. They spoke adamatly about the potetial of the atural ad huma resource edowmets of the idividual coutries ad urged coferece attedees to become ivolved i helpig the diverse Africa coutries i fulfillig their potetial. The forum cocluded with a iformatio fair o ivestig i post-coflict Africa atteded by represetatives from diverse local ad iteratioal orgaizatios, icludig: the City of Philadelphia Departmet of Commerce, the U.S. Export Assistace Ceter ad The Africa ad Caribbea Busiess Coucil. It all bega i 1983, the same year that the Secod Sudaese Civil War bega ad Ajok was bor i Souther Suda. The war evetually killed two millio people ad displaced four millio others. The war had its ow devastatig effects o Ajok. Five years after it started, whe most America childre Ajok s age begi schoolig, the itese violece ad worseig ecoomy forced Ajok ad thousads of others to flee their home coutry for Payodo, Ethiopia. Durig the ext 11 years, Ajok traveled by foot betwee Ethiopia, Suda ad Keya, costatly duckig attacks ad raids. From school hallways to eighborhood corers, Burley witessed violece while growig up ad said that fights ad other disruptios were part of the orm at Overbrook High School i West Philadelphia. Growig up i Philadelphia, you re liable to witess violece ofte, she said. Youth become immue to it; it s almost a everyday occurrece. Durig her sophomore year i high school, Burley suffered a loss that would chage her life ad ecourage her to work to stop violece amog youth i Philadelphia. My brother was shot ad died from his gushot wouds, Burley, a iteratioal busiess ad Chiese double major, explaied. That really chaged thigs for me; it made me look at violece i the city a lot differetly. After he died I kew that I had to do somethig. From that poit o Burley, who is oe of 17 sibligs ad the first i her family to atted college, was determied to help put a ed to youth violece. She became a studet metor ad co-fouded the Pather Peace Core, a orgaizatio desiged to trai studets i coflict resolutio. She recetly received a $50,000 grat from the state to develop the Peace Core model at 10 schools that are raked amog the most dagerous i Philadelphia. She said her program empowers studets by givig them a opportuity to solve their problems together. I my experiece, studets i the same age group are more ope to helpig each other, Burley said. It really allows studets to ope up a bit more whe their peers, ot adults, are helpig to resolve a coflict. I additio to workig to further develop the Peace Core, Burley was recetly appoited to the Philadelphia Youth Commissio. The commissio will give youth of Philadelphia a opportuity to have some real voice i solvig the city s issues with violece, said Burley, who has bee appoited to the youth violece subcommittee. The Youth Commissio cosists of a pael of 21 youg Philadelphias betwee the ages of 12 ad 23. The Youth Commissio is a way for our city s youg leaders to become actively ivolved i city govermet, ad for city officials to beefit from the ideas ad perspectives of youg Philadelphias, Nutter said. I look forward to workig with the Youth Commissioers ad will create other ways i which to provide opportuities for studets to become ivolved. The commissio, which meets mothly, will be oversee by members of Nutter s admiistratio ad the City Coucil. A lot of people eed a reality check, Burley said. I wat to educate youth about violece before it s too late. I do t ever wat ayoe to experiece the loss that I did.

Thaks to Temple CIBER s leadership role i a ew cosortium called the Global Busiess Project (GBP), MBA studets from the Fox School of Busiess have the opportuity to do the latter with their couterparts aroud the world The GBP is a itercollegiate MBA course developed ad facilitated by 10 Ceters for Iteratioal Busiess Educatio ad Research (CIBERs), icludig Columbia, Duke, George Washigto, Kasas, Marylad, Pittsburgh, Sa Diego State, Purdue, Temple, ad UNC-Chapel Hill. The project provides MBA studets from premier busiess schools with the opportuity to work o real issues facig multiatioal or local compaies i emergig markets. The GBP is differet from other iteratioal MBA cosultig projects because it combies studet teams from a cosortium of CIBER schools ad a parter uiversity i the destiatio coutry, requirig critical laguages, virtual teamig ad cross-cultural awareess, says Kimberly Cahill, Director of the Istitute of Global Maagemet Studies ad Temple CIBER. The fial project will be preseted to the compay i the critical laguage of the host coutry, which is uique. Adam Dotso is oe of two Temple MBA studets that participated i the GBP. I May, he traveled to Brazil to work with the largest privately held compay i North America, Koch Idustries. His four-perso team which he met i Washigto, DC, durig the Kick-Off weeked i March collaborated virtually ad is made up of MBA studets from Duke, North Carolia ad George Washigto. Oe member is from Brazil, aother is from Argetia, ad a third has dual passports from the U.S. ad Brazil. The team researched the value chai of ethaol productio i Brazil. For me, the Global Busiess Project offers a oe-of-a-kid opportuity to bled my backgroud i iteratioal ad itercultural relatios with my course work. Temple s other GBP participat is Lei Zhag, MS Fiace, whose team worked with a North Carolia lumber compay to ope a market i Chia. Her resposibilities icluded servig as the laguage expert, aalyzig the Chiese lumber market, cotactig potetial cosumers ad plaig the etire trip to Chia.
