3 Brief Guideline About Optional Courses Which courses? Students enrolled in the MSc in Economics must earn a total amount of 18 credits in optional courses (6 credits each). The updated list for the A.Y includes: Development Economics Health Economics Industrial Organization European Public Choice Monetary Economics Procurement and Regulation Environmental Economics International Economics Macroeconometrics Microeconometrics Theory of Banking When? Optional courses can be taken when preferred. However, the recommended policy is to take: The 1st optional course in the First Year, Second Semester The 2nd optional course in the Second Year, First Semester The 3rd optional course in the Second Year, Second Semester Remarks Students who wish to take an exam issued by the MSc in Finance and Banking or the MSc in EEBL can still ask the MSc Coordinator for approving it as their optional course. The consensus will be based on the course's program and the student's motivation. Students can also take more than three optional courses (e.g. in order to improve their GPA), but this choice is completely up to them and will not affect already registered exams (i.e. you cannot substitute one optional course for another).

4 Optional Course Development Economics Spring Semester, II module Focus Why are some countries poor while others are rich? What explains the success stories of economic development, and how can we learn from the failures? How do we make sense of the enormous inequalities that we see, both within and across countries? What is the difference between development and growth? These, among others, are the big questions of economic development. Objectives By the end of the course, students will have acquired an understanding of the main issues in development economics. Subjects as theories of economic growth, economic inequality and poverty, population growth and demographic issues, human capital accumulation, trade policy, the role of finance and international aid will be treated. Students will be exercised through intensive discussion of topics and the critical appraisal of current research. Prof. Alessandra Pelloni

5 Optional Course Environmental Economics Spring Semester, I module Course Description Environmental economics studies the complex interrelations between economics and the environment. In several cases markets do not provide the right amount of environmental protection, and some government intervention is needed to balance different social needs. In a world where human pressure and economic activities stress the environment by exploiting fisheries, forests, minerals, energy sources, and other environmental resources, it is increasingly important to study how economic tools can be used to develop sustainable environmental approaches and policies. Main Goals Prof. Mariangela Zoli zoli@sefemeq.uniroma2.it This course aims at providing students with the analytical tools and methodological skills that are necessary to understand the origins of environmental problems and to identify the appropriate policy responses.

6 Optional Course Health Economics Spring Semester Course Description Health economics is a growing field and is an important aspect of public policy in developed and developing countries. The provision and production of health care have different characteristics and incentives from other consumer goods making health related markets a unique topic for study. We will cover a number of topics including basic economic concepts important for the study in health economics, why health is different from other goods, aspects of the US and EU health care markets, health care reforms, as well as discussing the importance of health for development and growth. Main Goals to increase the student s familiarity with economic concepts and theories, especially as they can be applied in the health care sector; to increase the student s ability to use formal quantitative tools to analyze economic problems; to develop the student s ability to apply economic reasoning to health care issues and decisions. 7 Optional Course European Public Choice Spring Semester, I module Course Description The course examines public policy formation, political processes and political institutions from a rational choice perspective. The emphasis is on introducing some key formal models to simplify and analyze broad classes of situations. At the same time, rigorous empirical testing of formal models will be a central component. 8 Optional Course Industrial Organization Fall Semester, II module Course Description The purchase of goods and services by the government or public institutions - public procurement - typically comprises between 15% and 20% of a country s GDP. Improving the efficiency of public procurement, decreasing its cost and increasing its quality, can therefore contribute significantly to the well-being of a country. This course aims at providing a theoretical and practical understanding on how to procure efficiently public services. Using the economic theory of contracts and incentives, we discuss the incentives of public and private parties, considering both in house provision and outsourcing, with a special focus on Public-Private Partnerships. We discuss how tenders and contracts should be strategically designed so as to provide correct incentives, how user tariffs should be regulated, and which tools should be used to fight bid rigging and corruption in the procurement of public services. 9 Optional Course International Economics Spring Semester, I module Applying Knowledge and Understanding The course provides the theoretical background to understand and address the main issues in the international economic debate. The course objectives are complementary with potential students placement in international institutions (IMF, World Bank), Central Banks, Research Divisions etc. Topics: Exchange Rate Regimes, Currency Crises, Financial Crises, Sovereign and Public Debt Crises, The Subprime Crisis. Estimation : Maximum likelihood; Bayesian estimation. Economic examples: Bayesian VAR; Time Varying Parameters VAR; Large VAR. It is divided in two parts: the first one deals with small-scale dynamic regression models whereas the second one introduces to econometric predictive modelling with big data. 11 Optional Course Microeconometrics Spring Semester, I module Overview and requirements The course provides an overview of microeconometric methods for both cross-sectional and panel data and is structured so as to have a practical flavor, with a special emphasis on intuitions and applications. It combines standard lectures on microeconometric techniques together with tutorial lectures illustrating how the theory can be put to effective use through the Stata statistical software. It is especially suitable for students who want to address an empirical question in their master's thesis. After following the course, students should be able to understand when it is appropriate to apply a given method, the assumptions under which it is valid, and how it can be practically implemented. 12 Optional Course Monetary Economics Fall Semester, II module Course Description The course will analyze the main roles of money: numeraire, store of value and medium of exchange. Three main workhorse economic models will be introduced to the students: the Bewley-Townsend model, the overlapping generations model, the Kiyotaki- Wright model. 14 Dual Degree Get your second degree! Every year our first year students have the possibility to apply to the international program and the selected students will spend their second year at the partner University. Dual Degree scholarship from the MSc in Economics of euro each plus the Erasmus Scholarship. Next Call for Application March 2018 Candidates must be officially enrolled and must have completed at least 60 ECTS. A maximum of 2 students will be selected for each partner university. Candidates will be selected on the basis of their GPA (Winter Exam Session). Students will still have to pay all tuition fees at their home institution.
