1 Business School Alliance for Health Management (BAHM) Annual Competition April 18, 2015 Hosted by: Organized by: Competition Rules and Regulations The Business School Alliance for Health Management (BAHM) will host its annual competition on March 17-18, 2017 at the Haas School of Business at University of California Berkeley. The following document includes: Paper writing instructions Presentation information Judging and grading Overall competition information Each BAHM member school can enter one team into the competition. Details of the completion this year are included below: 1) Team Selection: Each BAHM School will select up to three (3) students to represent their school. Each team member s resume is to be submitted by 11:59pm PST Friday, January 6, all three resumes in a single PDF to haasbahm2017@gmail.com Teams will be notified by 12:00pm (noon) PST Monday, January 9, ) Topic: President-elect Trump & The Future of Healthcare Reform Each team will research and prepare a case study on a for-profit or not-for-profit health system, IDN or health insurer and how it plans to strategically respond to the potential to "repeal and replace" Obamacare and Medicare, as outlined on President-elect Trump's transition website. Through data analysis, interviews, and the team's own reasoning, the case should focus on the how the organization will adapt to this potential sea change. 3) Paper: Should describe and make the case for a strategic response to the potential to repeal and replace Obamacare and Medicare from the perspective a specific for-profit or 1

2 not-for-profit health system, integrated delivery network (IDN), or health insurer. The paper should include the follow areas: Executive Summary Brief summary of team s organization choice of for-profit or not-for-profit health system, IDN, or health insurer From the organization s perspective, provide a brief discussion on team s understanding of the specific actions the Administration will take to repeal and replace Obamacare and Medicare From the organization s perspective, an assessment of the effects to quality, cost, and/or access arising from each potential repeal and replace action based on analysis of primary and secondary data Competitive analysis of relevant regional and national players (based on secondary data) organization should consider Priority matrix of strategic responses organization should consider Implementation strategy, timeline and potential barriers 4) Written Submission: Due 12:00pm (noon) Monday, March 6, 2017 Each team will submit: Require 15 to 20 pages, not including exhibits Single-spaced 12 point font 1 inch margins Submit papers, by , to haasbahm2017@gmail.com 5) PowerPoint Submission: Due 12:00pm (noon) PST Wednesday, March 15, 2017 Final PowerPoint slide decks must be ed to haasbahm2017@gmail.com. You may not make any changes to the deck once it is submitted. Please also bring a flash drive containing a copy of your presentation with you on the 18 th as an emergency backup. Presentations will be pre-loaded on a laptop and we will provide a remote control/pointer to advance slides. 6) Oral Presentation: Saturday, March 18, 2017 Teams of up to three students will have 25 minutes to present their paper. They may choose to allocate their time any way they see fit between presentation and discussion and Q&A with the judges. Teams may determine their strategy for presenting the paper material (one student or all students presenting). Teams will present in a random order chosen on the morning of the 18 th. Teams will present in an open session. Schools will be permitted to watch other presentations, but not allowed to participate in the discussion and Q&A with the judges. 7) Poster Submission: Poster slide in PDF format must be ed to haasbahm2017@gmail.com by 12:00pm (noon) PST Monday, March 6, Student teams will be required to submit a poster outlining their recommendation. Posters will be prominently displayed at the conference where attendees will be able to vote for their favorite submission. If teams are present at the conference, they will not be allowed to actively market their submission or vote. Additional details: o All teams will be required to use the same poster size and format. Competition hosts will provide the template to the 10 chosen teams at the start of the competition on January 9, o Conference and Case Competition committee will pay for costs of the poster. 2

3 o Late submission of poster will incur an expedited shipping cost (to be paid by the team) 8) Grading Criteria: Based on: Written Presentation: 65% Comprehensiveness of research Clarity of problem, competitive analysis, and solutions Quality of writing Strength of overall analysis Consideration of key risks and uncertainties Oral Presentation and Q&A: 35% In the event of a tiebreaker, the team with the highest score in Oral Presentation and Q&A will move forward. 9) Judging: Judges will be given the papers before the competition for review. 3 judges will be present in each presentation. The judging panel will be comprised of faculty from the BAHM Alliance and other health care leaders. 10) Honor Code: Papers should be based on students original work. Students can work with faculty to develop their assessments and arguments. 11) Academic Credit: BAHM schools are encouraged to give participating students academic credit for their work on this competition. Credit amounts and requirements will be determined by the school and could take the form of independent studies, field projects, or other project-based coursework. It is up to the participating students to understand the credit and other requirements of their school at the outset of this project. 12) Preliminary Schedule BAHM teams will receive free admission to the conference and attendance is optional but highly encouraged. Teams can plan to arrive on either March 16th or 17th in time for the case competition dinner scheduled for 7pm in the Wells Fargo Room at the Haas School of Business. Student teams should consult with their university in regards to any travel authorization requirements or reimbursements. 6 We recommend you take the BART to get to any of the three hotels since it goes directly from SFO and drops you a block away from Hotel Shattuck Plaza and several blocks from the other two hotels at a cost of $9.55 Uber/Lyft from SFO to downtown Berkeley is around $50 (will vary) Uber/Lyft Share from SFO to downtown Berkeley is around $32 (will vary) Hotel is within walking distance of the Haas School of Business. Budget minutes to walk from the hotel to the business school as you will be walking slightly uphill almost the entire way. Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) BART goes directly from SFO to Downtown Berkeley. Rate is $9.55 (calculated by distance traveled).
