Situated on the north coast of Wales, Bangor has both mountains and beaches on its doorstep and is an idyllic backdrop to student life. Located in an area of outstanding natural beauty just outside of Snowdonia National Park, the city boasts dramatic views across the sparkling Menai Strait to the stunning Isle of Anglesey. In fact, The Independent s A to Z of Universities says Bangor has the best setting of any UK university. The city is just two hours by train from Liverpool, and two and a half hours from Manchester. Both are major UK cities with international airports and excellent links to the rest of the country. London is just over three hours away. Ireland is also easy to reach, with regular ferries running from Holyhead, on Anglesey, to Dublin. The ancient St Deiniol s Cathedral sits at the heart of Bangor. 10 international incorporated bachelor s The International Incorporated Bachelor s degree offers a four-year degree option at Bangor University in a range of popular subjects. PRE-SESSIONAL ENGLISH Pre-sessional English is offered as an extension to the IYZ programme, to students whose English language does not meet the required level for direct entry to IYZ. This programme is taught over either 6 or 12 weeks depending on your current English level. You will focus purely on raising your English language to an IELTS level of 5.5 (in each skill), before starting the core modules of your chosen route. Information Technology and Communication Skills In this module you ll focus on appropriate means of communication in academic work and developing a foundation in computing and IT skills that will enable you to be successful in your undergraduate studies. You ll become familiar with the conventions of academic discourse and writing, and learn to avoid plagiarism and poor academic practice. International Year Zero (IYZ) is the first stage of a four-year IIB degree. IYZ is designed to help you gain extra skills in your subject area, as well as English Language, before you continue to Year One of your chosen Bangor University undergraduate degree course. Studied across three terms, you will continue straight onto Year One of your degree programme once you have successfully completed your IYZ. The core modules are: English for Academic Purposes/ English Advanced English for Academic Purposes aims to improve your English skills to help you with life and study in the UK. You ll learn the critical importance of English language competence in an academic context and prepare for continuing academic study at Bangor University. The advanced version of this module helps those who want to join programmes requiring a minimum of 6.5 IELTS. The advanced module mirrors many of the components of English for Academic Purposes, but is taught at a higher level of English. UK Government and Society Providing an introduction to government and society in the UK, this module explores how Britain has changed and developed since You ll learn the main features of British democracy, the Crown, Parliament, Cabinet government, devolution, local government and the role of the civil service. The module also introduces you to the key features of British society and changes that have taken place in recent decades around issues of class, ethnicity, gender, rights and obligations, as well as considering how Britain relates to, influences and is influenced by the wider world. You ll also develop skills in word processing and spreadsheets to ensure you submit assignments appropriately, as well as using PowerPoint to deliver more effective presentations. Madihas from Pakistan Business Law Top Degree Choice Psychology with Business BSc (Hons) Psychology with business will provide you with an undergraduate-level education in the fields of psychology and business, along with key skills in scientific and market research, writing and presentation skills. The programme will present multiple perspectives in a way that fosters your critical evaluation skills, including a mix of neurological, cognitive, developmental, language, learning, social and personal perspectives. It will provide you with an understanding of how to apply theory to experience and behaviour, in particular in the business environment (e.g. aspects of organisational behaviour, management and marketing). The School of Psychology has more than 1,200 students and teache British Psychological Society fully accredited degree programmes. You will learn about the legal system in England and Wales, including the small claims track, and the rights and responsibilities of businesses in this legal framework. The module also outlines the formation and nature of a contract in law, and liability for non-fulfilment of a contract or negligence. Business Functions A basic introduction to the study of business and management, this module introduces the function of marketing in different types of businesses and organisations. It considers issues around the liberalisation of trade and the development of the global market, and how they have affected businesses and the emergence of the international manager. You will also look at basic human resource management functions and activities to gain an understanding of important issues surrounding people in the workplace. Macroeconomics Familiarising you with the UK economy and government policy, this module also introduces key macroeconomic indicators, including GDP per capita, price indices and balance of payments. You ll learn about fiscal and monetary policy aims, the desire for growth and the relationship between policy and rates of inflation, deflation and unemployment. National goals are viewed in the context of broader groupings such as the EU, and the impact of the development of a global market. Management Studies In this module, you ll receive a basic introduction to the study of business and management. You ll learn the different types of businesses and organisations, as well as how to finance a start-up. The module also illustrates different approaches to management and explains decision-making processes. It will give you an appreciation of the current business context and the challenges facing managers today. Mathematics for Business and Social Sciences In this module, you will learn the maths skills expected of you at degree level. It covers essential mathematical language, notation, conventions and units, as well as developing your algebraic skills and introducing you to basic statistical concepts, topics and methods. Microeconomics Providing a basic introduction to the study of microeconomics, this module introduces relevant theories, concepts and terminology as well as explaining key topics such as demand and supply, the economic problem and the allocation of scarce resources. You will look at different models and the importance of economic decision-making. Depending on your degree choice you must choose one of these modules Introduction to Psychology This module introduces students to the main theoretical approaches to psychology and considers its historical development as a field of study. Students are made aware of key ideas and concepts. The areas on which this module focuses are social, cognitive and developmental psychology. Introduction to Financial Accounting Covering the basic mechanics and processes of financial accounting in theory and practice, this module prepares you for the later years of your degree studies in Business Management and Accounting and Finance. It will also give you an understanding of financial accounting procedures and their importance in monitoring progress and profitability to run a business effectively.

12 International year zero Engineering and Computer Science 22/23 bangor.ac.uk/bic Top Degree Choice Electronic Engineering BEng (Hons) This course will prepare you for work as a professional engineer at the forefront of high-technology industry in both technical and managerial roles. During the degree you will gain extensive experience to ensure that you develop sound practical skills as well as a thorough theoretical knowledge. This degree has been accredited by The Institute of Engineering and Technology under licence from the UK regulator, the Engineering Council. An accredited degree will provide you with some or all of the underpinning knowledge, understanding and skills for eventual registration as an Incorporated (IEng) or Chartered Engineer (CEng). With a heavy focus on maths, physics and programming, you ll deepen your understanding during this first additional year of your undergraduate degree. For a full list of IIB degree options see bangor.ac.uk/bic You will study these modules: Computing 1 (Introduction to Problem Solving and Programming) Introducing you to problem solving via computer applications, you ll develop a basic understanding of algorithms and their uses, as well as gaining hands-on experience using simple software programs to solve problems. You will receive a basic introduction to the techniques of data handling and processing, and to the syntax of programming languages required for a computing degree. Computing 2 (Database Design and Usage) This module is a practical introduction to the technology and terminology around tabular data, and the construction and use of a database. You will develop a database for a given situation for example, a simulated business using current standards and appropriate software and use that database to identify and solve problems. By the end of the module, you will have a more advanced understanding of data processing and the construction and uses of databases. Mathematics 1 (Pure) This module provides you with the appropriate foundation in maths skills that you need for undergraduate studies in engineering and computer science. The main topics covered are: algebra, including indices and logarithms; binomial theorem and quadratic equations; differential calculus; integration as the inverse of differentiation; set theory; and probability and experimental laws. Mathematics 2 (Mechanics) Continuing to develop your maths skills and knowledge, this module introduces you to the relationships between forces, linear motion and energy, and the conditions for the static equilibrium of a body. The main topics it covers are: vectors; forces and equilibrium; relative motion; Newton s Laws of Motion; friction, including Hooke s Law; and work, energy and power, including work and kinetic energy, and the conservation of mechanical energy. Mathematics 3 (Further) This module covers complex mathematical skills and knowledge, such as: algebra, including partial fractions and inverse functions; the circle; trigonometry; differentiation and integration, including trigonometric, and logarithmic and exponential functions; and solving firstorder differential equations with separable variables, vector and vector methods in two and three dimensions, and forces as fixed vectors. Physics 1 (Properties of Matter and Waves) In this module, you ll gain a basic knowledge of atomic physics, materials, heat and gases, and oscillations and waves. There is a heavy emphasis on safe laboratory practice and procedures. The main topics covered are: properties of waves; sound; reflection and refraction; interference and diffraction; and electromagnetic waves. You will also study materials and consider the structures of solids and liquids, and heat and gases, as well as exploring the structure of the atom, radioactivity, and fission and fusion. Physics 2 (Electricity, Electronics and Fields) This module provides you with a basic knowledge of electricity and electronics, and of fields, that you will be able to apply in real engineering and computing situations. You will learn about current and charge, Ohm s Law, capacitors in DC circuits, measuring AC, transistors and logic circuits. Fields subjects include potential energy, electrical and gravitational fields, satellite launches, measuring magnetic fields and their forces, inductance and transformers, and data analysis.

13 International year zero Law and Social Sciences Top Degree Choice Law with Professional English LLB (Hons) Law with Professional English is specially designed for international students who do not speak English as a first language and who wish to gain further technical linguistic expertise in the legal context while undertaking a qualifying law degree. The course aims to develop your communication in professional and legal English to deal with the challenges of international business and law. On graduation, you will be able to meet the high standards that modern business and legal clients expect. LLB in Law with Professional English will give you a competitive advantage in the job market especially if seeking to work for business or law firms which have clients worldwide who use English as a medium of communication. This route also allows you to continue your studies in a range of psychology or Media degrees depending on which modules you choose. What will happen after you submit your application? One of our Student Advisers will support you through the whole application process. Below is a step-by-step guide to what will happen once you submit your application: Step 1 A Student Adviser will contact you to discuss any questions we or you might have about your application and to ensure you have sent all relevant academic transcripts and certificates of English language qualifications. If there is a gap of nine months or more in your studies we will ask you to tell us what you did during this time (e.g. work, travel etc.) Step 2 We will carefully review your application and check that your academic qualifications and level of English language are suitable for entry onto the BIC Stage 1 of your chosen degree programme. You may be asked for a valid SELT (Secure English Language Test) *. Step 3 Assuming your application is successful we will send you a formal Conditional or Unconditional Offer of a place - usually within 48 hours. Step 5 Once you accept your offer, we will also confirm with you whether you require accommodation and will help you to make the relevant arrangements. Step 6 Upon receipt of your completed Acceptance Form, Bangor University will send you your Certificate of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) letter, including your CAS number and statement. Step 7 You will then need to use the CAS to apply for a visa (if necessary). Step 8 Advance payment of the remainder of your tuition fees will be required prior to your arrival at BIC. If this is not possible, please pay the balance before enrolment. Step 9 Before the start of your programme we will send you all your pre-arrival information including details of your accommodation (if required) and a Bangor University/BIC welcome pack. We will also ask you for details of your flight to the UK. It is important that you try to arrive in the UK for the Welcome and Induction before your course starts.
