He has headed the Department of Geography and Economics at the University of Dar es Salaam (DUCE) and previously worked for the United Nations Development Program. He holds a Ph.D. from Monash University (Australia), a distinction in Master of Art (Economics) Degree from the University of Botswana and a first class Economics Degree from the University of Namibia. Dr. Kinyondo has over 10 years of researching experience having published in internationally reputable journals such as in the Oxford s Development Studies and Parliamentary Affairs. He has also led several teams of experts in formulating various socio-economic policies, regulations and codes of ethics in Tanzania and beyond. Dr. Kinyondo currently investigates issues pertaining to enterprise development, employment, industrialization, natural resources management as well as governance. Since July, 2013 WORK EXPERIENCE REPOA Position: Principal Researcher and Director of Strategic Research Responsible for carrying out in-depth research on economic growth and socio-economic transformation; Designing and implementing research projects drawn from the REPOA s research programme on the growth-poverty nexus; Developing research programme and strategy of implementation on matters related to socio-economic transformation for inclusive growth and development; Organising seminars and other dialogue mechanisms to stimulate national policy dialogue; Preparing publishable papers and policy briefs to inform decision-making processes at all levels of government and across diverse actors in development as well as linking with national and international academic, research and development institutions to facilitate learning and collaboration. August June 2012 Achievements: I have more than doubled the number of students wanting to pursue Economics subjects. I also had 85% passing rate among students I taught. Achievements: I had 85% passing rate among 100 students (on average in each semester) I taught. Furthermore, teaching students of diverse nationalities has strengthened my ability to work in multicultural settings. Sept, April, 2007 University of Botswana, Gaborone, Botswana Position: Teaching Assistant Responsible for teaching intermediate Macroeconomics and Microeconomics to more than 100 undergraduate students Achievements: Firstly, I had 80% passing rate among the students that I taught. In addition, working at the University of Botswana introduced me to tertiary industry and gave me the foundation I needed to successfully work in the industry as evidenced by the fact that I have since spent much of my career in academia Sept, August, 2006 United Nations Development Program (UNDP), Kibondo, Tanzania Position: National United Nations Volunteer Specialist Responsible for the management of UNDP s Project Strengthening Local Capacities for Development Coordination and Micro Projects in the refugee affected region of North Western, Tanzania. It involved coordinating economic recovery programs in partnership operations with sister UN organisations. It included activities in basic environmental sustainability, vocational and skills training, agricultural support, saving and loan associations as well as managing the Illicit Weapons Reduction programme. Achievements: Up to 30 local government officials had their capacity built such that they successfully took over the management of the project from UNDP in Also Members from vulnerable groups such as ex-prisoners and former guerrilla fighters were provided with cheap loans which changed their lives for better. Moreover, through the small arms and light weapons arm of the project, security by laws for each village were formulated and approximately 5,000 illicit weapons were voluntarily surrendered. In the end crime rate reduced drastically in the regions. July Oct, 2003 The Namibian Economic Policy Research Unit (NEPRU), Windhoek, Namibia Position: Research Intern. Responsible for researching on socio-economic issues in Namibia. Main tasks: Data gathering, data organization, data analysis as well as report writing Achievements: NEPRU gave me the first ever hands-on research experience which among other feats, helped me score a high distinction in my undergraduate dissertation July, Nov 2012 EDUCATION Monash University, Melbourne, Australia Awarded: Doctor of Philosophy Degree (Management). The PhD Thesis is entitled Strengthening Parliaments in the Pacific Region Thesis Abstract: This innovative study focused on assessing the effectiveness of measures being taken to enhance the competencies of members of parliaments in the Pacific region. An effective research on this
3 3 study demanded that I use of multi-disciplinary approach (essentially having to combine theories and concepts from political sciences, human resource development as well as adult education). NB: As an APAI scholar at MONASH University, I was also a member of the global team involved in an international project entitles, Parliamentary careers: Design, delivery and evaluation of improved professional development. This project on parliamentary careers investigated a total of 60 national parliaments, and applied General Management theories (i.e. Human Resource Development Theories) in assessing professional development of members of parliaments in case parliaments. Aug, 2006 June, Achievements: Being a part of the project enhanced my abilities to collect, record, analyse and disseminate findings. It also allowed me to work with internationally acclaimed human resource development authorities and parliamentary practitioners from world class institutions around the world, thereby significantly enhancing my practical knowledge on management both as a discipline and practice.
