This guide provides you with specific programme information and course summaries for the programmes offered in Business Diplomas. Prior to selecting your courses and occurrences, please ensure that you work with both this enrolment guide (EG1) and the latest version of the timetable (T1). These documents are available online business/enrolment-documents. For all programmes in this guide we recommend you bring your own laptop. The compulsory courses are taken from the New Zealand Diploma in Business and the skillsbased component is from the New Zealand National Qualifications Framework (NZNQF). The Diploma may be completed as a stand-alone qualification. It provides graduates with important managerial skills required within the New Zealand tourism and travel industry including transport operations, hotels, wholesalers and tour and attraction operations. Students choosing to undertake this programme of study should see the Tourism Programme Leader for information on these courses. Students who successfully complete the programme will be required to register with the New Zealand Institute of Management (NZIM) and pay the registration fees in order to receive their qualification. As a guide, the NZIM registration fee for 2012/2013 was $35 per paper. Copies of the NZIM qualifications handbook are available from the Faculty office, NO110. The Tourism Programme Leader will advise students which unit standards are currently offered by the Faculty of Business and Information Technology. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Enrolments for this programme will only be accepted from students who are currently enrolled in the NZIM/ ATTTO Diploma in Tourism Management. 2

3 MIT DIPLOMA IN BUSINESS* (NEW STUDENTS) Level 5 MN4516 Method of study Qualification Duration Start dates Full time or part time MIT Diploma One year (full time) February and July Credits 120 Cost (2014 Fees) $5500 (approx) per year About the programme The MIT Diploma in Business provides a great foundation in Business that will develop your all-round business acumen, which you can use to increase your opportunities for promotion or for further study. The programme has a focus on core business skills and knowledge such as accountancy, management, economics, marketing and commercial law. It also allows you the flexibility to tailor your study to areas of interest and personal need, e.g. accounting, management or marketing. You will develop critical thinking skills as well as improving writing and speaking skills essential for any career. Completion of the MIT Diploma in Business opens doors to further study options such as the New Zealand Diploma in Business (Level 6) or the Bachelor of Applied Management with its wide range of majors. The MIT Diploma in Business can be completed part time, allowing you to carry on working as you study. To graduate with a MIT Diploma in Business (Level 5) Students must successfully complete 6 courses (120 credits) drawn from the New Zealand Diploma in Business, made up as follows: No less than 80 credits drawn from the core New Zealand Diploma in Business Courses/ Prescriptions at level 5 and; No more than 40 credits from the New Zealand Diploma in Business at Level 6 where all prerequisites have been met, unless approved by the Programme Leader (please refer to page 10 & 11). No course is compulsory but a student must draw a minimum of 80 credits (four 20 credit courses from the following 7 core courses/ prescriptions of the New Zealand Diploma of Business) CORE Courses 80 credits (select four courses) Business Communication Accounting Principles Introduction to Commercial Law Fundamentals of Marketing Organisations and Management The Economic Environment Business Computing 550 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS* Applicants must have: A minimum of 14 numeracy credits at level one or higher in Mathematics or Pangarau on the Directory of Assessment Standards; and Fifty credits at level two or above with at least 12 credits in each of three subjects including a minimum of 8 literacy credits at level 2 or higher in English or Te Reo Mãori; of which 4 credits must be in reading and 4 credits must be in writing; and The literacy credits will be selected from a schedule of approved achievement standards and unit standards found on the NZQA website or equivalent to the above International students for whom English is not a first language must also have an IELTS Academic score of 6 with no band score lower than 5.5 or equivalent. Students who have attained the age of 20 years and do not hold the minimum entry requirements for a programme will be eligible to be enrolled as a student where their previous educational, work or life experience indicates they have a reasonable likelihood of success. Students who have not attained the age of 20 years and do not hold the required minimum entry requirements for a programme may also be eligible to enrol in exceptional circumstances. Such decisions will be made by the Faculty Dean. Applicants who meet the entry criteria will be accepted in order of application. * Pending Approval 3

It provides practical business skills and a pathway to degree-level studies. A six course programme, the diploma is popular with adult students and school leavers wishing to expand and further their career options. These students gain a formal business qualification based on nationally accredited and accepted NZQA courses already recognised and valued by employers. The Diploma in Business (Level 5) satisfies the entry requirements of many of New Zealand s tertiary qualifications. A wide range of institutions in New Zealand will award cross credits as the courses in the Diploma are nationally accredited. Every course studied in this qualification cross-credits to the New Zealand Diploma in Business. In addition students will also be eligible for cross credits to the relevant Degrees offered by the Faculty of Business and Information Technology. 5 New Zealand DIPLOMA IN BUSINESS (NEW STUDENTS) accounting focus & general New Zealand diploma in business Level 6 NC5121 Method of study Qualification Duration Full-time or part-time New Zealand Diploma Two years (full-time) NEW ZEALAND Diploma in Business with an accounting Focus Students may choose to complete the Diploma with a focus in Accounting. Start dates February and July Credits 240 Cost (2014 Fees) $5500 (approx) per year about the programme The New Zealand Diploma in Business is a nationally recognised qualification. Students gain a broad range of general business skills or focus on an accounting career. Students will also be eligible for cross credits to the relevant Degrees offered by the Faculty of Business and Information Technology. To graduate with a General New Zealand Diploma in Business (Level 6) students must successfully complete 12 courses (240 credits) of which 4 courses (80 credits) are at level six: At least six of the seven core courses At least four of the level 6 courses offered in this programme To bring the total number of courses to 12, additional courses may be taken at level 5 or 6. NOTE: Each course is worth 20 credits Course levels may be identified by the three digit NZQA code, the first digit in the code describes the level: Fundamentals of Marketing 541 is a level 5 course. The courses from the accounting focus provide students with skills for the finance and accounting sectors of business and are recognised by the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants (NZICA) as fulfilling the academic requirements for membership as an Accounting Technician (AT). 8 NZIM DIPLOMA IN management about the programme The NZIM Diploma in Management is offered under the direction of the New Zealand Institute of Management. It is not a qualification awarded by Manukau Institute of Technology. To receive this qualification students will be required to register their results, in the correct courses, with the New Zealand Institute of Management (NZIM) and pay the registration fees. As a guide, the NZIM registration fee for 2012/13 was $35 per paper. The correct courses are available online The NZIM Diploma in Management consists of a selection of courses from the New Zealand Diploma in Business. By completing the NZIM Diploma in Management and a further six appropriate New Zealand Diploma in Business courses you will gain the NZIM Diploma in Management and the New Zealand Diploma in Business. The efts value for all Diploma courses is Level Business Communication NZQA 560 Apply communication knowledge and skills in the evolving context of New Zealand and global business. Topics include the communication process in work place contexts; interpersonal, group, cultural and organisational communication; effective business writing in , letters, reports, e-communication (web-page analysis), and effective oral communication Accounting Practices NZQA 501 Record and process financial transactions and prepare financial statements and cash budgets for entities in accordance with current accounting practices. Topics include accounting for sole traders full set of books through to final accounts, reconciliations, end of period processes; accounting for other entities including trusts, companies, partnerships and not for profit organisations, and computerised accounts using the MYOB accounting software package and Microsoft Excel. Pre-requisite: Accounting Principles Accounting Principles NZQA 500 Understand financial statements and reports and be able to analyse and interpret business performance for sole traders and small companies. Topics include the nature, purpose and scope of accounting; preparation of a full set of accounts for a sole trader, the traditional historical cost model, analysis and interpretation of accounts, and accounting theory. Pre-requisites: None Introduction to Commercial Law NZQA 510 Understand the general principles of commercial law, to enable application of legal reasoning. Topics include an introduction to the legal system, contract law, the law of agency, and the law relating to contracts for the sale of goods and consumer transactions Organisation and Management NZQA 530 Understand the factors that influence management and the organisation. Topics include introduction to organisations and management, the development of management theory, organisational culture, managerial ethics and social responsibility, decision-making, planning and controlling, organising, motivation, leadership, groups, topical issues, and managing change The Economic Environment NZQA 520 Apply elements of economic theory to decision making by individuals and businesses and contemporary issues. Topics include the economic way of thinking, the price mechanism, theory of the firm, evaluation of the market, international trade, the national economy, government policy and the economy, and current economic issues. Additional course material fee may apply. Pre-requisites: None Tourism Practium (not offered after Semester 2, 2014) Plan and complete a practical work based project within a specific tourism or travel workplace. Pre-requisite or co-requisite Tourism Industry Management Principles of Tourism NZQA 580 (not offered after Semester 2, 2014) Understand concepts of global tourism and apply this knowledge to the tourism industry in New Zealand. Topics include the nature, history and growth of tourism in New Zealand, impact of tourism on the host country, demand and supply, marketing of tourism, finance, transportation, accommodation, selling the tourist product, visitor services, and the future of tourism Business Computing NZQA 550 Understand, discuss, evaluate and apply information technology to meet business requirements. Topics include computer hardware, computer software, data communications and networks, computer security, and ethics. Seventy percent of this course consists of practical computing skills using Microsoft Office Fundamentals of Marketing NZQA 541 Gain a working knowledge of fundamental marketing concepts relevant to contemporary organisations. Topics include the marketing function, market research, buyer behaviour, market segmentation, industrial marketing, service marketing, the marketing mix, marketing planning and strategy, and international marketing. 9

10 Level Financial Accounting NZQA 601 Apply the regulatory and technical aspects of financial accounting and external reporting for companies and evaluate financial and non-financial information. Topics include accounting for company formations, business amalgamations and other reconstructions, group accounts, income determination, external presentation of company accounts, and analysis and interpretation of company accounts. Pre-requisites: Accounting Principles and Accounting Practices Management Accounting NZQA 602 Collect, interpret, present and use relevant management accounting information for an organisation to effectively plan, control and make appropriate decisions regarding business operations. Topics include objectives and role of management accounting, cost behaviour, control recording and accounting for allocation of materials, labour overheads, job costing, process costing, joint and by-products, service industry costing, responsibility accounting, introduction to budgeting, standard costing, cost-volume-profit relationships, marginal costing, and decision-making. Pre-requisites: Accounting Principles and Accounting Practices Business Finance NZQA 603 Gain the necessary knowledge and skills of business finance to function effectively in association with the financial management decision-makers. Emphasis is given to modern accounting practice in New Zealand, particularly as it relates to small to medium businesses. Topics include financial planning and control, working capital management, capital structure and cost of capital, investment decisions, sources of finance, mergers and take-overs, and international finance. Pre-requisite: Accounting Principles Internal Auditing (not offered 2014) NZQA Understand the role of internal auditing in the corporate governance framework. Topics include the role of internal auditing, qualities of the internal auditor, internal control, planning the audit, audit evidence, and the audit report. Pre-requisites: Accounting Principles and Organisation and Management Taxation NZQA 606 Apply knowledge of taxation rules to New Zealand taxable entities in a range of situations. Topics include income, deductions, depreciation, payment of taxes, individuals and partnerships, companies and dividends, fringe benefit tax, goods and services tax, assessments, and objections and penalties. Pre-requisite: Accounting Principles Leadership NZQA 630 Understand concepts and apply principles of leadership. Students will create a personal plan to develop leadership capabilities. Topics include concepts of leadership, the individual as a leader, leadership in the context of the organisation, and leadership in the context of society. (but we strongly recommend Organisation and Management) Operations Management NZQA 632 Study the management function in relation to the production of goods and services as well as the practical realities of operations management. Students will also gain an introductory understanding of operations' contributions to the overall management of the organisation. Topics include operations management overview, quality management principles, quality management tools and techniques, collection, collation and use of operations data, design of goods and services and their processes, performance measurement, resource planning, and specific implementation techniques. Pre-requisites: Organisation and Management Applied Management NZQA 636 Learn to apply management concepts. New Zealand Diploma in Business students are strongly advised to study this paper towards the end of their studies, as paper 10, 11 or 12. Pre-requisites: Organisation and Management Human Resource Management NZQA 633 Gain knowledge of the human resource functions, processes, procedures and related legislation needed to effectively manage people in organisations, as well as practical skills in specific human resource management processes. Topics include introduction and overview of human resource management, job analysis and design, the employment process, training and development, performance management, rewards management, health and safety, human resource systems and information, and current human resource issues. Pre-requisites: Organisation and Management

11 Employment Relations NZQA 635 Apply knowledge of current employment relations legislation, processes and practices, and understand the complex relationship of the parties involved. Topics include definition theories and development in New Zealand, employment law in New Zealand, negotiation and conflict resolution, the parties to employment relations and work organisation. Pre-requisites: Organisation and Management Marketing Research NZQA 642 Gain knowledge and understanding required to conduct marketing research in order to develop and assess marketing strategies. Topics include the role of marketing research, secondary research, primary research (surveys, observations, experiments), qualitative vs. quantitative research, questionnaire design, sampling, data analysis, and data presentation. Pre-requisite: Fundamentals of Marketing Marketing Planning and Control NZQA 648 Produce an operational marketing plan for a market or business of interest. Topics include corporate appraisal, competitive analysis, customer analysis, category attractiveness analysis, marketing objectives and strategies, marketing mix tactics, actions plans, monitoring and control, and financial analysis. Pre-requisite: Fundamentals of Marketing 541 common tests Some courses run common tests, usually held on a Friday afternoon. To find out whether your courses run a common test, check in the course outline you will receive in the first week of your course. It is essential that you are available. Bring your own device The recommended minimum specifications for your laptop are: Windows 7 or 8 or equivalent 32/64 bit operating system i5 dual core or equivalent processor 4GB RAM 320 GB or greater hard drive Wi-Fi capability 13 screen For Word Processing and the production of spreadsheets and presentations you will need MS Office 2007 (or later) or an equivalent software package In order to connect your device to the MIT wireless network, it must have up to date antivirus software The recommended operating systems for student devices is Windows 7 and above or Android version 3 and above. Windows XP is not supported Buyer Behaviour and Communication Strategies NZQA 644 Gain the knowledge and understanding of buyer behaviour. Develop consumer profiles and appropriate marketing communication strategies to reach specific target markets. Topics include levels of involvement and risk-taking in the decision-making processes, consumer profiles, perceptual positioning, the marketing communication process, and communication objectives and strategies. Pre-requisite: Fundamentals of Marketing Tourism Industry Management NZQA 685 (not offered after Semester 2, 2014) Apply business concepts to develop a business plan for a small to medium sized tourist venture. Topics include product/business definition, research requirements, financial issues, marketing, and human resource and risk management. Pre-requisite: Principles of Tourism 11

These are available from the Academic Registry Office, J101, South Campus or academicrecords@manukau.ac.nz. An administration fee of $15.00 (GST inclusive) for the first copy, and $5.00 for each subsequent copy requested at the same time is payable.
