Important Rules Make Up: No make-up is to be worn in Years 7-9. Discreet make-up is permitted in Years 10 and 11 (but nail varnish is only a Year 11 privilege). Valuables: Please do not bring expensive items or large sums of money to school as the school can take no financial responsibility in replacing lost or stolen items. Lost Property: Lost property should be handed in to Reception without delay. If you lose something please enquire at Reception and if the item has not already been handed in you should tell your Tutor who may feel it appropriate to all staff to see if the item can be located. Breaktimes: You must stay on the school premises during breaktimes. Packed lunches may only be eaten in the designated indoor areas and outdoors on the bank during the summer. Hot and cold drinks may be purchased from vending machines. You must not eat or drink in classrooms or corridors. Mobile Phones and similar devices: These are brought to school at your own risk. You may listen to music using headphones through your mobile at break and lunch but no other use is permitted. You CANNOT use your phone for texting, making calls, social networking, taking pictures etc whilst in school. You DO NOT have permission to text or phone family or friends during the school day. Should you urgently need to contact parents you must first seek staff permission. If mobile phones are used inappropriately, they will be confiscated and parents may be asked to collect them from Reception. Items NOT allowed in school: Cigarettes, lighters, e-cigarettes etc. Anything that would be considered a weapon, eg BB gun, penknife, slingshot or similar Chewing Gum High caffeine energy drinks, eg Red Bull Alcohol in any form Bikes: We strongly advise all students riding bikes to wear appropriate helmets. Bikes taken to school are brought to school at the risk of the owner. We strongly recommend that a D lock is used to secure bikes in the bike shed. Travelling to and from school: When you are making your way to and from school your behavior and actions reflect in school. ALNS can and will take action when students act in a way that is considered inappropriate on the way to and from school.

Illness, Accidents and Signing Out Illness and Accidents: If you feel unwell or have an accident you must tell a member of staff straight away. Normally you will be sent to the Medical Room where a trained First Aider will make an assessment and take care of you. If you are considered too ill to remain at school or if hospital treatment is necessary then your parents will be contacted to make suitable arrangements. In order to avoid upset or confusion DO NOT contact your parents by text or phone them without the school s permission. At the same time parents are asked NOT to directly contact their child during the school day using mobile phones as this can compromise the ability of the school to act in loco parentis during the school day (as per the Home School Agreement). Medicines: If you need to take medicine at school you must bring a letter from your parents stating when you need to take it. Your medicine must be left with the Medical Room staff. The only exception is if you have an inhaler for asthma. Please do not ask for aspirin, paracetamol or other tablets at school; we are not allowed to give you any medicines. Ibuprofen can only be given when prescribed by your Doctor. Signing Out: Under no circumstances should you leave the school or go home without permission. Failure to ensure you are signed in or out could jeopardise the safety of others. In the event of a fire, emergency personnel will be sent back into the building if you are not accounted for. Routine medical and dental appointments and college interviews should be made outside school hours. If you must leave school during the day for any reason then please bring a note from your parents to show to staff. You must sign out at Reception and you will receive an official permission slip. You must keep the slip with you as you may be challenged as to why you are not in school. You should make every effort to return to school later on that day; on return to school you must sign in at Reception.

Attendance and Punctuality MISSING SCHOOL OR BEING LATE WILL MEAN YOU MISS VALUABLE WORK. Giving your best means being on time every day. Good attendance is a foundation for a successful education. Students should be in the school building no later than 8.25am where a warning bell will sound when they should report to their form tutor either in their tutor room or in an assembly. Registers are taken at 8.30am, if students arrive after this time they will receive a late mark. If they arrive after 8.45am they must sign in at Reception. They will be marked late and their attendance for the morning session will be considered unauthorised unless they have a good reason. Afternoon registration will take place in Period 4. Expectation for attendance is to be above 96% throughout the year. Anything less than 85% is considered unacceptable. If students have consistently good attendance they will almost certainly outperform those students who have poor attendance. By having good attendance at school they may make a positive impact on the rest of their life by achieving their very best. A telephone call indicating the reason for absence on the first day before 9.30am is required. On the fifth day of absence due to illness in any given term, medical evidence will be expected to be provided (doctors appointment card/copy of prescription will suffice). Fixed Penalty Notices and legal action may be used as a last resort for students with unauthorised absence. Leave of Absence Parents have a legal obligation to send their child to school. Parents must complete a Leave of Absence request form available from the school website or reception, if they need to take their child out of school during term time. Parents are requested not to arrange family holidays during term time as this will be regarded as unauthorised absence and parents may receive a Fixed Penalty Notice. However, there may be exceptional circumstances and, as such, each request will be considered by the Headteacher. In almost all cases it is the students responsibility to catch up with any work missed.

Behaviour and Anti-Bullying We expect all students to work hard, behave well and make a positive contribution to our successful school. If necessary the following sanctions may be used to allow students time to reflect upon any inappropriate behaviour: Negative Referrals. Withdrawal of break and lunchtimes. Study Support (2.45pm 3.05pm, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday). Curriculum Leader Detention (60 minutes). Head of Year Detention (90 minutes). Headteacher Detention (120 minutes Friday 3.00pm-5.00pm). Students might be placed On Report. Each teacher will write a comment after every lesson and the report card will be checked by the Head of Year and sent home for parents to review. It may be necessary for students to be placed in another teachers classroom to work, also referred to as parking. This may be for a short period of time or in some cases, for several lessons. In serious cases you may be asked to work away from their peers in the Inclusion Room or excluded from school for a period of time. You could be permanently excluded for a serious one off incident or for a sequence of events if you are not responding to interventions put in place. Information such as inappropriate behaviour and sanctions is available to your parents through INSIGHT. Bullying: Bullying may be verbal or physical and is unacceptable. This includes comments that might be passed through social networking sites or mobile devices outside of school hours. If you are a victim of bullying, or if you observe incidents involving others, do not hesitate to inform a member of staff. You should not put up with bullies in your group of friends. We can only deal with bullying when we are made aware of it. You may also report bullying anonymously on-line through the school website. Those reporting that they have been bullied will be dealt with sensitively and in a way to prevent it happening again.

Independent Learning Learning beyond lessons is considered essential to your success at ALNS. You will be expected to complete tasks for all the subjects you study which you can complete either at home, in the Information Centre or in subject specific sessions after school. Independent Learning tasks Year 7 and 8: Independent Learning tasks for all your subjects will be published on the school website. Tasks you will relate to the content or skills required for you to make good progress in lessons. Tasks given should challenge you and allow you to make progress and also develop your literacy and numeracy skills. Roughly you should spend this much time on each subject every week: English, Maths, Science Languages, Design History, Geography, Computing 1 hour each 45 minutes each 30 minutes each You will have an Independent Learning timetable to help you and your parents plan your workload. Your teachers will keep assessment records during each half term and then award one of the following grades via INSIGHT: FM - You have fully met the requirements of the half term resulting in a considerable positive impact on your progress. PM - You have partially met the requirements of the half term resulting in positive impact on your progress. NM You have not met the requirement of the half term. Performance and PE You must attend at least one extra-curricular activity at breaktime or after school on a regular basis. If you are already committed to performance and/or sport activities outside of normal school you should provide evidence of your outside school attendance to have this accredited as your extra-curricular performance activity. If you are unable to attend clubs with good reason then you will be given the option of completing a written style task. Independent Learning tasks - Year 9 and 10: Independent Learning tasks are set regularly and you will be expected to complete work for every subject you study. Tasks can be accessed through the school website. The tasks take many different formats; some tasks are broken down into weekly tasks whereas others will last a number of weeks. It is very important that tasks are completed by the deadline set by the class teacher. You will be assessed in lessons and a grade given every half term as in Years 7 and 8. Independent Learning tasks - Year 11: The nature of Year 11 means that individual subjects will give tasks out in relation to examination dates etc. By now you should have developed the skills to be able to manage your learning beyond lessons and to adapt to the different pressures throughout the year. Tasks will not be published but you will still be given a grade as to how much your independent work has contributed to progress in each subject.

Key Stage 3 Independent Learning Timetable The timetable below helps to give you and your parents a guide as to how best to plan your time to complete your Independent Learning tasks. You may prefer to spend time at the weekends to complete tasks should you wish. As this is only a guide you may need to complete certain subjects as a priority not necessarily on the day that the subject has been assigned. Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday 6¼ hours per week the equivalent of 1¼ hours per day (not including weekends).

Reporting your Progress - INSIGHT The way the school reports your progress is through a website called INSIGHT. Your parents will be issued a password that they can use to access information about your Targets Effort Progress Achievements, and Attendance They can access this whenever they wish as long as they have internet access. Lost Password: If at any time they lose or forget their passwords they should contact the school either by telephone or by through the main website. A new password can then be issued. Targets: At the start of each year in each of your subjects your teachers will speak with you and agree a target grade that you will work towards achieving over the year. If you reach this target grade, you will have made excellent progress in the subject. Each term you will also have Written Learning Targets agreed with your teacher and these will help to guide you on what you need to do next in your learning. Progress Towards Target: At the end of each half-term (6 times a year) your teachers will inform you and your parents whether you are making an appropriate level of progress to achieve your targets. Your Subject Teachers and Tutors will share this information with you so you are clear how you are doing. Attendance: The information about your attendance is live. Your parents can check you have arrived on time to school by using INSIGHT. Achievements: Any positive rewards or negative sanctions you may receive are also reported live using INSIGHT. We feel it is really important you are aware of your progress. However, it is your parent(s) decision whether they share their access to this information with you by either showing you the pages or sharing the password with you. All of this information is available to your parents on INSIGHT.

Payment for Food, Trips etc Payments for school trips, events, curriculum items, music lessons and food purchased for the School Canteen can be made at the School Bank located in reception. The School Bank s opening hours are 8.00am 8.45am and at both breaktimes. Payment can be made in cash, cheque or by using the online cashless system ParentPay. (Cheques should be made payable to ALNS). Using ParentPay will allow your parents to pay online using their credit or debit card for items such as food, school trips and equipment. We prefer parents use this method of payment as it is safer and more secure than you bringing cash and cheques to school. To set up an account please see the school website or contact the Student Service team. Please note: payments for different items should be on separate cheques as different bank accounts are used for trips, music lessons, curriculum items and lunches. This happens automatically when using ParentPay. For further information on payments and school trips please see the ALNS website Parents Section/ Letters/ Trip Letters/ Learning Outside The Classroom and the section on ParentPay.

The Information Centre The Information Centre has many resources to support your learning and to help you complete your independent learning tasks. Fiction and non-fiction books are available for loan. The room has 27 computers and space for you to study. The staff are available to support your time in the Information Centre, make sure you speak to them; for example you may need help with choosing a book for Accelerated Reader Programme (Years 7-9), researching some information, IT support, Careers and College information and much more. Opening Times: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday Wednesday am am pm pm (3.30pm on Friday) am am pm pm The Information Centre will sometimes be closed during these times; however we will endeavor to give you as much notice as possible. When you are in the Information Centre please remember: You can borrow two books at a time for two weeks. Please do not remove books from the Information Centre unless they have been issued to you by the Information Centre staff. To return your book by the date stamped on the inside of the book (make a note in your planner for when it is due to be returned or renewed if you have not finished it). To follow instructions given to you by your teacher or Information Centre staff. To respect other students and staff using the Information Centre. To use the resources correctly Not to eat or drink whilst in the Information Centre at any time (during lessons, break, lunch or after school) In the Careers area you will find books and leaflets on many different jobs, you will also find College Prospectus which are available for you to take home. If you would like to receive Careers Advice please speak to a member of Information Staff.
