2 Welcome to Jackson Academy! With a positive attitude and a genuine effort academically and behaviorally, you will be successful in this program. The following handbook will be helpful to you in your efforts. Mission Statement Our mission is to provide our students with another Opportunity at Greatness! Academics The Academies uses the APEX program for high school and middle school. Both programs require students to complete work on the computer and reach levels of success before moving on. They will be given grades for their work. Grading Scale A B C D 59-0 F **Progress Reports will be mailed home and available for pickup on October 16 th, January 8 th, March 19 th, and May 26 th. These dates are subject to change.

4 ***Teachers are available for conferences by phone or in person by calling the school during business hours and setting up an appointment. AS OF JULY , WCPS IS A SMOKE/TOBACCO/E-CIG FREE CAMPUS Transportation Students may ride a Warren County school bus from their home to be dropped off directly at Jackson/Lighthouse Academy. (All bus rules must be followed.) Please allow up to three days to set up transportation. In addition, students may be dropped off at or walk to Jackson Academy. Students May NOT drive to Jackson Academy. There will be no loitering outside of the building. Attendance A student is considered truant when they accumulate three unexcused absences and/or tardies during a school year. They are considered habitually truant when they accumulate six or more unexcused absences and/or tardies. When a student is habitually truant, the district may make a court referral. A student regardless of his age is considered habitually truant, after they have been absent or tardy to school six days without a valid excuse. Being absent from school for less than a full day shall be considered a tardy. A student is considered tardy if he misses less than 60 minutes at any time during the school day. Checking the student out during the day will be considered a tardy and will only be excused if the parent or guardian sends a note. The excuse must meet the requirements laid forth by the board. Doctor s excuses will also be accepted for missing part of the school day. A student is considered absent for a full day for failing to show up at all during a school day. All absences are automatically considered unexcused until they are excused by receiving a note by a parent or doctor.

5 Attendance Procedures After three unexcused absences or tardies, written notice from the school will be sent to the parent. After five or more unexcused absences and/or tardies the parent will receive a final notice letter and parent contact from the administration. After six or more unexcused absences or tardies, the student will be reported to the District Truant Office. The District Truant Office may initiate contact with the Court Designated Workers office or Family Court judge. The students name will also be forwarded to the driver s license bureau and that student s driver s license may be revoked. After nine or more unexcused absences and if student is over 18, a conference with student, parent, and the school administration will take place to discuss the future status of enrollment at Lighthouse Academy High School. Unexcused Absences and Tardies- Definition and Notes The Warren County Board of Education has adopted a policy, which covers five reasons for being out of school. Absences or tardies for any reason other than these five will be automatically considered unexcused until the parent or guardian sends a note detailing the reason for the absence or tardy or the school receives a doctors or court excuse. The Board approved excuses for missing school are as follows: a. Death or severe illness in the student s immediate family. A student will be excused one day for the funeral of an immediate family member. The Director of Alternate programs with pre-approval may grant Additional excused days for funerals. b. Personal illness of the student. c. Appearance in court of the student pursuant to a warrant, subpoena, or citation. e. Participation in a school-related activity approved by the principal. f. Other valid reasons approved by the principal.

6 Any student who misses school shall: a. Have a parent or guardian call the school attendance office at by 8:15 am. b. Submit a written excuse to the attendance clerk within three days of the return of the student to school. This includes tardies, checkouts, and any partially missed days. Written excuses should include the following: a. Student name b. Date absent c. Specific reason for absence d. Signature of parent or guardian e. Parent phone number Jackson/Lighthouse Academy will accept only five (5) written parent notes excusing absences during the school year. After accepting five parent notes, only doctor s excuses will be accepted. ***At any point, doctor s offices may be contacted to confirm the validity of doctor s excuses*** Notes can cover more than one consecutive day of missed school. After the student has been absent from school five times due to illness, the family will be required to obtain a health clinic or doctor s note detailing the reason for the absence to be excused. Students who need to miss school for medical reasons more than 10 consecutive school days could be asked to complete an application for homebound instruction, which must also be filled out by the family doctor. Students with excessive excused absences who are not on homebound and do not turn in documentation from a doctor will be referred to the courts.

7 Dress Code A dress code has been put in place at to eliminate confusion, build pride, and help students focus on their education. 1. Khaki pants with a long or short sleeve shirt. (Dress Shirt or Polo Shirt. Shirts must have a collar.) 2. Pants must be worn with a belt and at waist/hip level. Oversized belt buckles are not allowed. 3. Shirts are to be tucked in. No skin is to be showing between shirt and pants. Underclothing may not be visible at any time. Revealing necklines are not permitted. 4. Clothing must not be ripped, torn, or tattered. 5. Hairstyles or colors deemed by the Principal to be distracting or disruptive will not be permitted. Hair should be clean and groomed. 6. Hats, bandanas, and/or head coverings of any type may not be worn inside the building or on school grounds unless preapproved by the administration. 7. Body piercings and jewelry are not allowed in school. (This includes wallet chains.) 8. Shoes must be closed toed, laced, and properly fitted. (House slippers, shower shoes, flip-flops are not allowed.) 9. Sunglasses will not be worn inside the building. 10. The wearing of blankets is not permitted. ***Administrators and teachers will strictly enforce the dress code. Students who are in violation will be sent to the office, subject to disciplinary action, and not permitted to return to the classroom until the standard of dress is followed***

8 Cell Phones/Electronic Devices/Money Cell Phones and other electronic devices are NOT permitted. If students are in possession of these items, they must be turned in at the time of the morning search. Any student found to be in possession of an electronic device after the morning search would be subject to disciplinary action. In addition, no student shall be in possession of more than $5 at any point on his or her person. Large quantities of money are not to be brought to school. Appropriate Language and Respect Students will not use inappropriate language, which includes, but is not limited to: cursing, threatening, name-calling, etc Language must be appropriate both in school and on the bus and must be used when speaking to both faculty and other students. The use of inappropriate language will result in disciplinary action. Computer Usage Computer usage is limited to Apex Learning and other academic functions only. No game playing is allowed or other Internet usage (movies, images, music, YouTube, etc). Failure to properly use the computers will result in disciplinary action. Disciplinary Matters and Procedures Jackson Academy will be using a points system for disciplinary issues. Students will begin each day with points. As the day progresses, points may be subtracted for behavioral or academic infractions. Teachers will document the student s point losses and comments on a weekly form. If a student habitually loses points they may receive counseling, a parent conference, isolation, suspension, etc Students must earn at least 80% to have a successful day. At the end of the week, a copy of the point sheet will be sent home for parents to view and return to school signed on Monday.

9 **Upon reaching certain point levels, rewards may be assigned to the student, such as hat day, snacks, or any other preapproved activity. Conversely, if a student is not making adequate point progress, consequences will be assigned including but not limited to parent conferences, suspension, or referral to the Board of Education for a hearing. Earning Your Way Back Students must achieve 45 SUCCESSFUL days before they are allowed to return to their home school. They will meet with the counselor to discuss their transition and prepare for it. A meeting will be scheduled at the home school to assist in the transition, and follow up within the first month will take place. Discrimination Jackson/Lighthouse Academy and the Warren County Board of Education forbids discrimination in educational opportunities and employment on the basis of race, marital status, color, national origin, age, religion, sex or disability. (WCBE ) ASBESTOS MANAGEMENT PLAN Each school site in the District has an Asbestos Management Plan (AHERA Report) which identifies where asbestos containing building materials (ACBM) are located in the school. The ACBM poses no health concerns as long as it remains in good condition. The ACBM is inspected every six months to ensure it remains in good condition while AHERA report is updated/ made available for review upon request.

I choose to be a positive influence and work hard academically and behaviorally in order to earn my way back to my home school. 11. I choose to abide by the policies and procedures as outlined in the Jackson/Lighthouse Academy Handbook and Warren County School District Student Handbook.
