7 TAKS Did our students learn what they were suppose to learn in their current course or grade level? STAAR Did our students learn what they were suppose to learn in their current course or grade level? Are they ready for the next course or grade level? Are they college ready or on the path to college readiness?

8 STAAR Is More Rigorous! The questions are more complex and require higher level thinking. The most important concepts for a student to learn in a grade level will have more questions on the test (readiness standards). The test will be longer. There is a 4 hour time limit.

9 STAAR Is Longer Math 3-8: +6 questions Reading 3-8: +4 questions Writing: +1 additional composition Science: +4 questions Soc. Studies: +4 questions EOC: +2 to 13 questions

10 STAAR/EOC tests will be released EOC Performance standards will be established in Feb Reports with performance available in June 2012 STAAR 3-8 Performance standards will be defined in Oct Reports with performance available in late fall 2012.

11 As the District transitions from TAKS to STAAR, we will not calculate EOC scores in GPA. The District will review information from TEA and will periodically evaluate and modify District guidelines to meet state expectations. Credit and GPA are awarded by the semester average.

12 Final Grade is computed by averaging the two semesters then counting it as 85% of the Final Grade and the EOC as 15% of the Final Grade. If either semester average was not a passing grade but the Final Grade is passing, the student will receive credit for the semester(s) failed.

13 The following conversion chart will be used to determine EOC score for calculation purposes: Scoring Category Conversion Grade Academic Performance 100 Satisfactory Performance 90 Unsatisfactory Performance 68

14 Students needing to retest should retest at the next available testing date The District will not include the retake score in the final grade calculation for the course

15 Retest scores will be used to meet the cumulative score requirements in each of the four core content areas Retest scores will be used to meet DAP requirements.

16 The ARD committee will determine the type of assessment to be administered for students with special needs. For students taking modified or alternative EOC assessments, the ARD committee will determine how the score on the EOC assessment will be used for final course grades, credit decisions, and graduation requirements.

17 STAAR Alternate will be very similar in design to the current TAKS- Alt STAAR Modified will cover the same content as the general STAAR assessments, but will be modified in format and test design Each will reflect the same increased rigor and focus of the general assessments

18 ELL Participation in STAAR All 6 th 9 th grade students will participate in STAAR or STAAR EOC Test decision is made by the student s LPAC committee

19 ELL Participation in STAAR Test choices include: STAAR L for Math, Science and Social Studies for students needing moderate to substantial linguistic accommodations STAAR with linguistic accommodations

22 For ELLs who have been enrolled in U.S. schools 3 school years or less (5 or less if qualifying unschooled asylee/refugee) and have not yet attained TELPAS advanced high reading rating

23 When enrolled in English I or II/ESOL I or II course, eligible ELL shall not be required to include assessment score in cumulative score for graduation; retake assessment each time it is administered if student passes course but does not achieve minimum score; or have score count for 15% of student s final grade

24 An ELL whose parent or guardian has declined bilingual/esl services required by state law is not eligible for special ELL assessment, accommodation, or accountability provisions No linguistic accommodations during testing No English I/II EOC special provisions No unschooled asylee/refugee provisions

25 Accommodations are changes to materials or procedures that enable students with disabilities, English language learners or disabling conditions to participate in learning and testing. Some accommodations may be appropriate for instructional use, but they may not be appropriate on a statewide assessment.
