1 SLHS 557: Dysphagia University of Arizona Spring, 2015 Class time: Tuesdays & Thursdays 11-12:15 Location: SLHS 409 Instructor: Robin Samlan, Ph.D., CCC-SLP Office: SLHS Phone: (520) Office hours: by appointment Course Description: This course will cover normal and disordered deglutition in adults and children. It is intended to provide the student with an understanding of the anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology of the oral and pharyngeal stages of deglutition; to familiarize the student with various methods for assessment of the oropharyngeal swallow; and to develop the student s ability to select appropriate behavioral treatment options based upon diagnostic information. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be prepared for supervised work with patient populations at risk for, or with known, dysphagia at practicum entry-level skill. Course Objectives At the end of the course, it is anticipated that students will demonstrate knowledge of the following: 1. Describe the anatomy and physiology of deglutition across the lifespan. 2. Identify the causes, signs, and symptoms of oropharyngeal dysphagia. 3. Describe clinical and instrumental assessment of dysphagia evaluation. 4. Demonstrate beginning level skills analyzing Modified Barium Swallow Studies 5. Determine the appropriate management for various cases of dysphagia. Required Course Resources Textbook: Groher, M., & Crary, M. (2010). Dysphagia: Clinical management in adults and children. Web Account: You will be required to complete the Modified Barium Swallow Impairment Profile (MBSImP) online training. It costs $75. You should register at: Additional Readings and resources: Additional readings will be posted on d2l. Grading: Learning will be evaluated through points earned on exams and assignments. Late assignments will be accepted, though the grade on that assignment will be decreased by 10% for every day (24 hour period after deadline) the assignment is late. No assignment will be accepted for credit more than 72 hours after the deadline. Final grades will be determined using the standard grading scale: % = A % = B % = C % = D <60% = E

2 Course Requirements: 1. MBSImP training (15%): This training program is divided into three parts. The first 2 modules (the Learning Zone & the Training Zone) will be graded as pass/fail. You will receive full credit for those parts of the training (3% per zone) through turning in proof of completion by the specified dates. The exception is if you miss the deadline for the first screen shot showing proof of registration. This will decrease your grade for the learning zone score by 50%. The remaining 9% of the MBSImP score will be determined by your score on the Reliability Zone as follows: Score in Reliability Zone % of the allotted points Be aware that the Learning Zone contains over 70 videos of individual swallows, the Training Zone contains 20 videos of individual swallows and 15 videos of full studies, and the Reliability Zone contains 10 videos of full studies. Northern Speech Services suggests allotting 30 hours for completion of the training program. You have 10 weeks to complete the training. Do not leave it to the last minute. 2. Assignments (15%): The assignments will not be listed on the syllabus or announced ahead of time. Some will be in class and some out of class. They will be used to help you solidify and apply key information from the class or readings. The lowest of these scores will be dropped. If you miss class (even if it an excused absence ) and there was an in-class assignment that day, you will receive a 0 on that assignment. 3. Article presentation (10%): You will give a short (5 minute) presentation on an article you select from a list of topics and dates exams (20% each, 60% overall) Course Policies: Attend class. Please be on time and stay until the end of class. If you miss class, get notes from a classmate. Some graded activities will occur in class. These will not typically appear on the syllabus. If you miss the class period during which a graded assignment occurs, you will not receive credit for the assignment (even if you have a great reason for missing class). Do the reading. Though I will not cover everything you read in class, the reading should complement the classroom material. It will help you with assignments and exams. Be courteous in class by placing phones and other electronic devices into a silent (nonvibrating) alert mode. Be professional in your interactions with classmates. Grading: If you wish for me to re-grade a particular question or component of an assignment, I will be happy to do so provided you complete the request, in writing, within one week of the date the graded item was returned to you. The written request must include the reason your answer should be considered correct (with the appropriate textbook pages or course slide referenced). If I am re-grading a question, I will re-grade

3 the entire assignment or exam, which may result in a higher or lower grade. After a test or assignment has been re-graded, the final grade is non-negotiable. All holidays or special events observed by organized religions will be honored for those students who show affiliation with that particular religion. Absences pre-approved by the UA Dean of Students (or Dean s designee) will be honored. Incomplete Grade Policy: Incomplete grades will be given ONLY in special circumstances as outlined in the university s policy.
