1 Academic Challenge Program Application Overview Research tells us that students do well in learning environments that meet their educational needs. The Academic Challenge Program uses several research-based approaches to meet the education needs of high-achieving learners. Because research shows that academic students benefit from working with like-minded peers, the Academic Challenge Program groups high-achieving students in class together. This gives students opportunities to talk, think and question in a supportive environment. Since these types of students learn quickly with little practice, they need challenging, well-paced programming. Students in this academic program are self-directed and often exceed curricular expectations at their grade level. Students are given opportunities to demonstrate their learning in a variety of ways. Discussions are inquiry-based, there is more time to reflect on questions, and wherever possible, students work hands-on to expand their understanding of the curriculum. Homework is limited, and assessment is focused on learning through experience, not only marks. The program promotes goal-setting, problem solving, global thinking and leadership qualities throughout. Students will have enrichment opportunities to demonstrate and refine leadership and citizenship skills within the school and the community through such things as volunteer mentoring, peer tutoring, school-wide events such as Culturama, and field trips specific to the Academic Challenge Program. Students are strongly encouraged to select a Fine Arts (Music, Drama, Art) option as part of their programming to establish a well-balanced education that promotes growth in all areas. These classes help to foster creativity, communication and confidence which can benefit students in all areas of their life. Applying to the Program - T. D. Baker will offer Academic Challenge for at least one class of 32 students in grade 7. - Priority in this program is given to students who are coded Gifted and Talented by Edmonton Public Schools. Additional space is available for students who demonstrate excellence in academic standing. Coding and testing for Gifted and Talented is not mandatory for the program, however, it does guarantee acceptance into the Academic Challenge Program. - Testing for Gifted and Talented coding takes place at the elementary level. Parents may contact their current school or seek testing through a private psychologist. If a student qualifies for Gifted and Talented coding, please ask the school to contact T. D. Baker to confirm this information and reserve their place in the Academic Challenge Program.

Baker school office by Friday, April 6th at 4:00 p.m. Program Acceptance Guidelines ACCEPTED 1st Students who: - have been coded Gifted & Talented - live within our attendance area ACCEPTED 2nd Students who: - have been coded Gifted & Talented - live outside our attendance area ACCEPTED 3rd Students who: - have A s (80% or higher) at their current school in all four core subjects (Math, Science, Language Arts, Social Studies). - live inside our attendance area ACCEPTED 4th Students who: - have A s (80% or higher) at their current school in all four core subjects (Math, Science, Language Arts, Social Studies). - live outside our attendance area When will I know if my application is accepted? Parents/ families will be notified if their child is accepted into the AC Program after Tuesday, April 17th. It is important for parents to pre-enrol their child at T. D. Baker School for the school year through Schoolzone. A student s placement in the Academic Challenge program is not confirmed until the student is pre-enrolled at T. D. Baker School.
