1 Job Title: 2-year Registered Nurse Classification: Registered Nurse (RN) Reports To: Executive Director of Special Services & Principal FLSA Status: Non-Exempt JOB SUMMARY This position provides direct nursing services and health related training to district staff and students, and provides educational support directly to students. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Essential duties of this position include the following. Employees in this position perform some or all of the following tasks. Other duties may be assigned. 1. Develops medical/emergency protocols and training of necessary school staff under the direction of 4-year RN, school nurse. 2. Formulates and implements health care plans for students collaborating with families and medical professionals under the direction of 4-year RN, school nurse. 3. Conducts student health assessments. 4. Delegates health-related procedures to staff and supervises fulfillment of delegated responsibilities. 5. Communicates with parents and staff regarding health needs under the direction of supervising teacher and/or 4-year RN, school nurse. 6. Performs direct nursing as needed (e.g., medication, tube feeding, seizure management). 7. Oversees medical charts and medication management. 8. Provides sexual, health and relationship education to students. 9. Assists students with feeding, hygiene, bathrooming, infection control, etc. 10. Assist with independent living skills for special needs students (cooking, shopping, chores, dishes, sweeping, laundry, cleaning, library, etc.). 11. Travels to multiple classroom sites under the direction of supervising teacher and/or 4-year RN, school nurse. 12. Provides consultation in educational settings regarding student health needs. 13. Assist in the management and coordination of fire drills, lockdown drills, locking and unlocking doors. 14. Just as with medical interventions - some students require behavioral interventions to support their individualized needs and development. Some interventions may be physical in nature and require appropriate training, safety equipment or physical ability. 15. Reports safety, sanitary and fire hazards immediately to supervisor. 16. Interacts thoughtfully and courteously with students, staff and parents/guardians and resolves conflict in a professional manner. 17. Professionally represents the school and the District in interactions with parents, community, staff, and students. 18. Supervises a variety of student activities including playground, cafeteria, bus loading and unloading, field trips, hallways and other areas where students gather ensuring safety and security at all times. 19. Maintains appropriate certifications and training hours as required. 20. Works directly with students with a variety of special needs.
2 21. Models appropriate behavior in various settings. 22. Tests, evaluates, and collect data on students' abilities in math, writing, spelling, reading, social skills, life skills, and behavior and monitor progress as directed by teacher. 23. Assists students, individually or in groups, with lesson assignments to present or reinforce learning concepts. 24. Implements and tracks Individual Education Plan (IEP) data as directed by supervising teacher. 25. Assists with physical management of students including lifting, moving, positioning, feeding and toileting or diapering under direction of teacher. 26. Escort and supervise assigned students in various activities (music, PE, counseling, library, recess, etc). 27. Presents subject matter to students, utilizing a variety of methods and techniques such as lecture, discussion and supervised role playing. 28. Monitors and assists students as needed. 29. Plans daily activities and instruction for students under the direction of the teacher. 30. Elicit specific behaviors from students as indicated by the instructional program. 31. Confers with teaching staff on progress of students. 32. Administer medications within the scope of District policy(ies) and state and federal laws. 33. Manage student behavior across settings using consistent and positive intervention strategies under the direction of the licensed teacher. 34. Assists staff with record keeping, copying, filing, grading assignments and taking attendance. 35. May transport students to various community/school sites including field trips, community centers, grocery stores, post office etc. 36. Monitors and assists students as needed. 37. Assists the teacher in developing educational materials 38. Follows prescribed daily schedule as outlined by the teacher. 39. Plans daily activities and instruction for students under the direction of the teacher. 40. Assists the teacher in the setup and maintenance of the classroom, materials and supplies. 41. Assists the teacher in scheduling appropriate meetings and completion of paperwork. 42. Assists the teacher, when directed, in communicating with parents regarding student progress in general. 43. Obtain special training as directed to meet unique needs of assigned students(s). 44. Participates effectively at regular team meetings with teacher and other support staff using appropriate social skills, problem solving and conflict resolution strategies. 45. Maintain appropriate and secure confidential records, information and inquiries. 46. Maintains a safe environment for students at all times. 47. Other duties may be assigned as needed. As students needs evolve the day to day essential functions may vary. 48. Follows and maintains knowledge of all District policies and procedures. 49. Adheres to district personal protective equipment (PPE) protocols and procedures outlined in student behavior plans as well as identify the need for PPE or changes in PPE protocol - which might include the need for replacement or new equipment, the discontinuation of the use for a plan, or seek out additional PPE should it be needed. 50. Attends work regularly and promptly and occasionally performs work beyond a standard 40-hour work week when workload requires.
3 MARGINAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Marginal duties of this position include the following. Employees in this position perform some or all of the following tasks. Other duties may be assigned. 1. Attends in-service trainings. 2. Attends staff meetings. 3. Attends department meetings. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES All school employees have some responsibility for supervising students and assisting in maintaining a safe environment. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Associate's degree (A.A.) in nursing. RN License Current CPR and First Aide certification PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Bilingual Spanish Prior successful experience working in a school setting or with young children strongly preferred. Type 10 driver s license Crisis Prevention Intervention certification KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs. Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations, and permutations. Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis. General knowledge of computers including the ability to use (Outlook), internet, order processing, word processing (MS Word 2007), and esis software.

The noise level in the work environment is usually low, but occasionally high depending upon the student population and activities.
