Students are not allowed to return to a subject-area assessment attempted on a previous test day or to work on a subject-area assessment that has not yet been administered (Gr. 5 & 8 have 1 book, 2 subjects THEY WILL ONLY WORK ON THE READING). 14 Breaks Test administrators may allow students to take brief breaks in the testing room during a test session. Breaks are not mandatory. 23 Gr. 4-7 Writing The test administrator may read aloud or sign the writing prompt to any student who requests this assistance. Reading or discussing student compositions is not allowed EVER. At no time before, during, or after the administration of the assessment are test administrators permitted to assist students with their written compositions. The test administrator must not do the following: elaborate on the prompts give students an opening and/or closing sentence give students an outline for organizing their compositions give students ideas about how to develop their compositions translate the prompts into another language (except sign language) UNLESS DIRECTED BY LPAC March 2016 STAAR/STAAR EOC Training 23
24 STAAR-A 4 th Grade Writing 4 th graders are not required to type their essay on the computer CC will need to assign this task to a test administrator to be done before the test can be submitted the essay must be typed EXACTLY as written by the student transcription must be completed before the end of the school day. 27 Proper Testing Procedures Communicate (orally or in writing) the amount of time left to test in one-hour intervals and, if desired, in shorter intervals during the last hour. Once the four-hour time period has ended, test administrators will instruct any students still testing to either put their pencils down and close their test booklets or stop their online tests. 29 Seating Charts Start and end time for the test session must be recorded on the seating chart. Seating charts must include the names of students testing and the students locations in the room. 34 Linguistic Accommodations Talk to students who will be receiving linguistic accommodations prior to the test session to let them know how their test will be conducted and the types of assistance they are eligible to receive. Though students should be familiar with using the accommodations in instruction, you may need to review particulars about using them in a standardized testing situation. 37 Linguistic Accommodations STAAR Gr 4-7 writing, English I and English II: Clarification in English of word meaning in writing prompts: Students must ask for clarification of word meanings on the writing prompt pages. Before providing clarification, ask if the student has looked up the words in the dictionary. Assistance may be provided to students who still require clarification after using a dictionary. To clarify meaning, the test administrator may use simpler English, pictures, and/or gestures. The test administrator is NOT permitted to reinforce or emphasize any part of the information on the prompt pages or assist in any way with the planning, organizing, or writing of the composition. 38 Linguistic Accommodations English I and English II: Clarification in English of word meaning in short answer reading questions: Student must ask the test administrator to clarify the meaning of words/phrases in short answer questions on the reading assessment. Clarification may be provided only for requested words or phrases that are NOT language arts terms, NOT part of the selection title, and NOT quoted verbatim from the selection. Before providing clarification, the test administrator ask if the student has attempted to look up the words in the dictionary. Assistance may be provided to students who still require clarification after using a dictionary. To clarify meaning, the test administrator may use simpler English, pictures, and/or gestures. The test administrator must NOT reinforce or emphasize any part of the information or assist in any way with the planning, organizing, or writing of the response. 39 Extended Time Accommodations The extra time (same day) accommodation is for eligible students with disabilities and ELLs. 50 Oral Administration Test Security All security measures outlined in the STAAR Test Administrator Manuals must be followed. Test administrators must be aware that they are viewing secure content. Test administrators may NOT respond to test questions, make notes about test questions, or discuss the content of the test at any time. 52 Oral Administration For STAAR grades 3 8, there will be only one form for all 2016 administrations; therefore, the test administrator and the students should automatically have the same form. 55 Oral Administration Oral administration can include different levels of reading support for each eligible student. The test questions and answer choices must be read aloud in the order they are presented. The test administrator may: read parts of the test questions and/or answer choices at student request read all test questions and answer choices throughout the test March 2016 STAAR/STAAR EOC Training 55
56 Oral Administration When the test administrator reads parts of test questions and/or answer choices at a student s request it is acceptable to read over the student s shoulder.
