1 FAQ: DIBELS Progress Monitoring Why do we Progress Monitor? Progress Monitoring is a critical part of the RTI approach, where teachers can frequently monitor student achievement in response to instruction and evaluate teaching approaches and effectiveness. How often should we progress monitor in DIBELS Next in DCPS? DCPS frequency expectations are tied to the color-coded DIBELS Composite Score. Students at red (Well Below Benchmark) should be monitored every 2 weeks. Students at yellow (Below Benchmark) should be monitored every 4 weeks. Students at green (At Benchmark) should be monitored as needed. This means, each child in these status groups must be assessed with at least one (1) DIBELS PM measure within each range of time. In which DIBELS measures should we Progress Monitor our students? We meet students where they are for Progress Monitoring. Option 1 Option 2 Match instruction to assessment. 2 Will all my students receive the same PM recommendation? No. There may be classes where students are receiving PM at 2 or 3 or 4 different levels or measures. This is okay! Teachers can always PM in measures that were NOT given at the most recent Benchmark. This is okay! We meet all students wherever they are. I ve PM ed once. Am I done? Continue to PM at the given frequency until the next Benchmark. Fidelity rates for PM completion are pulled by DCPS every two weeks. You must check on your students in every round of PM for their Benchmark status/color. Is there anything else to know about the PM Measures? The measures to PM are: FSF, PSF, NWF, DORF, and Daze. Only LNF cannot be monitored. NWF and PSF forms are the same for every grade and are all the same level of difficulty. Daze and DORF forms are grade-specific. Use a form only once per student. Sync all data daily. Should I use off-grade level measures with my students? We should use PM to meet all students where they are. Monitor progress based on the focus of instruction. For example, while the child is learning to blend, monitor with NWF; while the child is working on fluency, monitor with DORF. Every third DORF form, move up one grade level to see if growth is still evident. If yes, stay there. If not, return to previous grade level forms Amplify Education, Inc. All rights reserved. Page 2

3 How do I know which DORF level to choose? DORF can be given at 5 grade levels, 1 st 5 th. When a child is reading below 90% in grade level, choose to monitor offgrade level with the highest level that satisfies these criteria: Forms Grade 1 Grade 2 Grades 3, 4, 5 Accuracy >90% >90% >90% Words Correct Per Minute DORF forms must be administered in order (form 1, form 2, etc.). DORF forms are calibrated in difficulty to the one preceding; pick a starting place and move forward. Every third DORF form, move up one grade level to see if growth is still evident. If yes, stay there. If not, return to previous grade level forms. If progress isn t seen in DORF, consider Progress Monitoring in PSF and NWF (and view student s mclass history) to determine if precursor skills for reading (phonemic awareness, letter-sound correspondence, blending) were mastered. Where can I get more PM worksheets? For additional PM forms or Daze PM booklets, copy the existing forms in the kit or create a free login at dibels.org and download all the forms you need. Can Daze PM be completed online? Yes! Just like for Daze at Benchmark, Daze PM can be completed online with the student logins. 4 How can teachers monitor their own PM results? Teachers can view a student s last three PM scores as well as how many days it s been since PM was given. Click BOY at the top of the screen in then expand a measure s history using the small arrow at the side of the measure name. In this example, Olivia s BOY score in NWF was 32 Correct Letter Sounds. Her last three scores indicate 37, 50, and 48 correct letter sounds. See image: Teachers can also print out their DIBELS PM Class Summary Report that refreshes in real time. To access the Class Summary Progress Monitoring report: 1. Open a Class Summary: Time of Year tab (MOY, for example.) 2. Select the class or group you would like to view from the Class/Group list. 3. Click the Printer icon and select PM Class Report: DIBELS Next. 4. Load the PDF, save and print, if desired. 5. 5 the student s progress towards the next Benchmark goal, as compared to the aim line. How do I input the Daze Progress Monitoring scores? If you ve chosen to administer Daze PM with pencil/paper, you ll need to enter the scores yourself. If you chose Daze PM online, the scores are entered automatically. 1. Click the time of year (BOY, MOY, EOY). 2. Click Record Daze at the upper right of the screen. 3. Select Progress Monitoring in the drop-down menu. 4. Record results for individuals or the class (date, form, total correct, total incorrect). 5. Click Save Results. How do we PM students in Burst : Reading? The Burst lesson set generated for a particular group of students will specify which measures to PM. If two measures are requested (RW and DORF, for example), please do both measures on the same day and sync the same day. In most groups, the Burst PM measures satisfy the PM requirement for DIBELS when completed on each Day 7 of the 10-day lesson plan. If a specific Burst group is working on strands that requires only Burst measures for PM (IW and RW, for example), an additional DIBELS measure would be required for that lesson cycle to fulfill the DIBELS PM expectations for DCPS.
