3 Department Overview Key Stage 3 The Netherhall School Design & Technology Department has a consistent record of success in a range of subjects over many years at both Key Stage 4 and 5. In Design & Technology we teach pupils to recognise and explore good design, to identify customer problems and needs, develop suitable solutions and prototypes, testing their ideas. Members of the department teach across a range of subjects within the D&T suite focussing mainly on their own specialist areas. In years 7 & 8 students study four subjects in mixed group, 2 subjects each year. The subjects are Resistant Materials, Electronics, Food and Textile. In year 9 they select two of these. Designing & Making Pupils will develop a range of skills and techniques that will combine a knowledge and understanding of material properties. Added to this the ability to use specialised manufacturing equipment to design and make quality products. Product Analysis Pupils will look at existing products and explore how and why they were designed the way they are. Later they will look at the effects of manufacturing on the product and the markets they are sold in. The Environment Environmental issues are now a vital part of the subject. Pupils are encouraged to consider sustainability in designs and the impact products make on the world around us. Recycling and reuse are also major considerations in the design of products as is energy efficient processing and manufacture. Healthy Living In food technology we look at the health issues associated with what we eat, analysing the effects of nutrients and energy values on the body. Pupils will investigate how nutritional information can be used in the design of food products and how this relates to its packaging. Developing Life Skills All the elements in Design & Technology are based on developing life skills that could be used after leaving school either as an occupation or to benefit their day-to-day living as an adult.

4 Key Stage 4 In years 10 & 11 pupils can choose as part of their options to study 1 or 2 of the subjects listed. Students can currently choose GCSE in Resistant Materials, Electronic Products, Graphic Products, Textiles Technology and Catering, also a Btec in Health & Social Care. Key Stage 5 As a department we have been successfully teaching A Levels in Product Design for more than 20 years. 10 THE NETHERHALL SCHOOL POLICY STATEMENT on: CHILD PROTECTION Rationale: The Netherhall School fully recognises the responsibility it has under Section 175 of the Education Act 2002 to have arrangements in place to safeguard and promote the welfare of children. The school also recognises its responsibility to follow the guidelines of the DfES document Safeguarding Children and Safer Recruitment in Education (January 2007) with respect to the Safer Recruitment of staff. Through their day to day contact with students and direct work with families, staff at the school have a crucial role to place in noticing indicators of possible abuse or neglect and referring them to the appropriate agency. Purpose: To prevent the abuse or neglect of children via the teaching and pastoral support offered to students. To create and maintain a whole school protective ethos. To institute and implement procedures for identifying and reporting cases, or suspected cases, of abuse. To provide all staff with training which enables them to discharge their responsibilities with respect to Child Protection issues, including the provision of support to students who may have been abused. To prevent unsuitable people working with children our policy applies to all staff and volunteers working in the school, including community education staff and governors. Teaching assistants, mid-day supervisors, secretaries as well as teachers can be the first point of disclosure for a child, concerned parents may also contact governors. Guidelines: All issues concerned with child protection need to be handled by the staff with great care. Any concerns must be passed on to the Designated Teachers for Child Protection as soon as possible following the accepted Netherhall School procedures. Staff should read the Netherhall School Guidance for Safe Working Practices for the Protection of Staff and Children. Netherhall School procedures for Child Protection must follow an interagency approach as set down in DfES circular Safeguarding Children in Education. The school reserves the right to contact previous employers to ensure the safeguarding of children.

11 Policy Statement on the Recruitment of Ex-offenders The CRB Code of Practice Requires that the school sends a copy of its Policy on the Recruitment of Ex-offenders to all job applicants. A Model policy statement is given below. In accordance with the Criminal Records Bureau Code of Practice this policy is made available to all Disclosure applicants at the outset of the recruitment process. The full CRB Code of Practice is available at As an organisation which uses the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) Disclosure service, the Governing Body of the school complies fully with the CRB Code of Practice and undertakes not to discriminate unfairly against any subject of a Disclosure on the basis of conviction or other information revealed. We meet the requirements in respect of exempted questions under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974, all job applicants will be subject to a criminal record check from the Criminal Records Bureau before the appointment is confirmed. This will include details of convictions cautions and reprimands, as well as spent and unspent convictions. A criminal record will not necessarily be a bar to obtaining a position. We are committed to the fair treatment of applicants, regardless of race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, responsibilities for dependants, age, physical/mental disability or offending background. We promote equality of opportunity for all with the right mix of talent, skills and potential and welcome applications from a wide range of candidates, including those with criminal records. We select all candidates for interview based on their skills, qualifications and experience. A Disclosure will only be requested from the CRB for those positions where a Disclosure is required. All application forms and recruitment information will contain a statement that a Disclosure will be requested in the event of the individual being offered the position. We encourage all applicants called for interview to provide details of their criminal record at an early stage in the application process. This information should be sent under separate, confidential cover. The information will only be seen by those who need to see it as part of the recruitment process. At interview, or in a separate discussion, we ensure that an open and measured discussion takes place on the subject of any offences or other matter that might be relevant to the position. Failure to reveal information that is directly relevant to the position sought could lead to withdrawal of an offer of employment. We undertake to discuss any matter revealed in a Disclosure with the person seeking the position before withdrawing a conditional offer of employment. We ensure that people at the school who are involved in the recruitment process have access to professional advice to identify and assess the relevance and circumstances of offences. We also ensure that they have received appropriate guidance in the relevant legislation relating to the employment of ex-offenders, e.g. the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act Having a criminal record will not necessarily bar you from working at the school.
