2 Monday, August 24 Tuesday, August 25, 2009 CHAMPs Training CHAMPs guides classroom teachers in designing (or fine tuning) a proactive and positive classroom management plan that will overtly teach students how to behave responsibly. It is part of Randy Sprick s popular PBS program called Safe Civil Schools. Easy to implement, the CHAMPs strategies will yield these benefits for classroom teachers: Learn tools to motivate students to do their best Identify clear behavior expectations with logical and fair consequences Reduce classroom disruptions and office referrals Improve classroom climate by spending less time disciplining and more time teaching Increase student on-task academic behavior Establish respectful and civil interactions CHAMPs is not a canned program nor is it a rigid set of procedures. Instead, a teacher using the CHAMPs strategies will reflect both her/his individual needs and style of the teaching and the students need for structure while manipulating the following five behavioral variables that research shows will promote better student behavior: 1. Structure (organize) your classroom to prevent misbehavior. 2. Teach your expectations regarding how to be successful within the structure that you have created. 3. Observe whether students are meeting your expectations. 4. Interact positively with all students. 5. Correct misbehavior fluently, briefly, calmly, consistently, immediately, and (as much as possible) privately. The CHAMPs strategies are teacher-friendly. The training is designed so that the teacher will leave with the individual plans and details necessary for applying what was learned. Participants in the training will receive a copy of the CHAMPs book along with comprehensive handouts and CD with reproducible forms.

3 Wednesday, August 26 Thursday, August 27, 2009 Behavior Interventions for the Classroom A classroom teacher typically establishes a vision for the classroom, generates clear expectations and rules, and spends the first several weeks of school teaching those expectations and rules. As a result, a teacher would like to expect that all the students would be well behaved, respectful, responsible, and motivated. In reality, that is almost never the case. Usually, there are one or two students who are: Chronically disrespectful Physically dangerous or severely disruptive Failing academically Disruptive to the learning climate Unmotivated and unresponsive To help improve the behavior of such students, this workshop will look at the interventions and strategies from Randy Sprick s book, Interventions: Evidence-Based Behavioral Interventions for the Individual Student, which is part of the popular PBS program called Safe Civil Schools. The training will first look at what we know about changing student behavior, especially those students who continue to display inappropriate behavior despite the teacher s effective classroom management plans. Next, the training will focus on how to implement six early-stage interventions that research has shown to be highly effective in promoting positive behavior change, especially with mild to moderate behavior problems. These six early-stage interventions are the least intrusive interventions that a classroom teacher can implement without needing help from an interventionist (e.g., special education specialist, counselor, school psychologist) or school team. Finally, the training will also explore several highly structured interventions, which have been found effective with moderate to severe behavior problems. Participants in the training will receive a copy of the Interventions book along with comprehensive handouts and CD with reproducible forms.

4 MIKE BOOHER Mike worked both as a school psychologist and the Supervisor of Psychological Services in the Guilford County Schools (N.C.) for 33 years until his retirement in February of The Guilford County Schools is a diverse and urban school district with currently over 72,000 students and 120 schools. Among his responsibilities and experiences, Mike worked extensively with the district s special education program to develop, implement and assess the district s efforts to transition disabled students from highly restrictive settings (including special separate schools) to less restrictive settings in neighborhood schools. Mike also led the district s program development and training of school-based intervention teams who responded to teacher referrals of students having serious academic and/or behavioral problems. Finally, from 1998 to 2006, he served as a project coordinator, trainer and coach for Guilford s PBS implementation of Randy Sprick s Foundations and CHAMPs programs from Safe Civil Schools. For , Mike served as a clinical instructor for the School Psychology Program at UNC-Chapel Hill. Mike has worked as a national trainer/consultant for Safe Civil Schools since During the school years, he trained and consulted with schools and districts in California, Idaho, Illinois, Louisiana, New York, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Wisconsin.
