1 Joplin High School Back- to- School Guide Joplin High School, 2104 Indiana Ave. First day of classes: Thursday, August 18 School hours: 8:30 a.m. - 3:40 p.m. Calendar of Events: Enrollment, Registration & Computer Pickup The days and hours for returning student computer pickup and new student enrollment are listed below. Students will be able to log in to Campus Portal and access their schedules beginning August 8. Thursday, August 4 New student enrollment begins SENIOR computer pickup including issuing new student IDs, computer insurance payments, parking passes, fines or fees Friday, August 5 JUNIOR computer pickup including issuing new student IDs, computer insurance payments, parking passes, fines or fees Monday, August 8 SOPHOMORE computer pickup including issuing new student IDs, computer insurance payments, parking passes, fines or fees Infinite Campus/Campus Portal open for students to review schedules Tuesday, August 9 Computer pickup for SENIORS, JUNIORS, and SOPHOMORES who missed their day, including issuing new student IDs, insurance payments, parking passes, fines or fees Thursday, August 11 9 a.m. FRESHMEN PARENT informational meeting (topic: 24/7 Learning). This is a great opportunity to have your questions regarding student technology answered. 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. FRESHMEN Kickoff (includes lunch, students will receive class schedules during event) PLEASE NOTE: Only Freshmen who attend Freshmen Kick- Off will be issued a computer on August 12. Students who do not attend Freshmen Kick- Off will be issued their computer on the first day of school.

2 Friday, August 12 7 a.m. - 4 p.m. FRESHMEN computer pickup including issuing new student IDs, insurance payments (for students who attended Freshmen Kick- off) Tuesday, August 16 6:30-8 p.m. JHS and FTC Open House JHS spirit wear available for purchase from 5:30-8 p.m. Thursday, August 18 8:30 a.m. (please allow extra time for student drop off / parking) First day of school - welcome back Eagles! 7 p.m. Fall Pep Assembly in Kaminsky Gymnasium Please note: During the school year, students must have their student ID badges to have their computers repaired. All fines and fees associated with computers or ipads will need to be paid before you are issued your computer. Students will not be issued a computer on the day of computer checkout if they owe repair fees from the previous year. This includes incoming freshmen from Joplin middle schools. If a student has not paid fees for repairs associated with technology usage, the student s parent will need to come to JHS to pay fees before a laptop will be issued. Additional Information LUNCH ACCOUNTS When you come in for computer pickup, please bring cash or a check to open your lunch account for the coming school year. Having your lunch account active will benefit you the first few days of school. Lunch prices and online lunch payment options are available at PARKING PASSES You must obtain a parking pass to park on school parking lots. Students may only park in the designated student spaces. Parking passes are $20 and are available when you pick up your computer. To obtain a parking pass you will need to fill out an application and show a valid driver s license. In addition to a driver s license, you will need to show proof of insurance and have any outstanding fines and fees paid. It is important that all students read the new parking policy. This policy will be available when you apply for a parking pass. You will also be able to access the parking policy in the student handbook online at SCHEDULE CHANGES Class schedule changes will not be made unless it is a critical course change. Please keep a copy of your schedule accessible, as you will need it on the first day of school. No printed copy of your schedule will be provided. IMMUNIZATIONS ATTENTION PARENTS OF SENIORS: The Missouri state immunization law has added a new meningococcal vaccine (MCV) requirement for all students who will be seniors for the 2016-

3 2017 school year. Two doses of MCV are required unless the first dose was administered to a student who was 16 years of age or older, in which case only one dose is required. All seniors are required to have one MCV after the age of 16 to attend school in August Your child may receive this vaccine from your doctor or your local health department by appointment. (Remember to take your immunization record with you to your appointment). A record of this must be turned in to the school nurse before the first day of school (nurses return to buildings August 10). Missouri school immunization law prohibits children who are not in compliance from attending school. Absences due to non- compliance of immunizations are unexcused. NOTE: Senior students who do not have proof of their vaccine or have not completed the necessary paperwork for an exemption will not be allowed to attend school until this is resolved. POLICIES & PROCEDURES: CELL PHONES, VISITORS, FOOD DELIVERIES, DRESS CODE The school s policies and procedures on cell phones, visitors, food deliveries at school, and the dress code are listed below. These policies help support high expectations, minimal disruptions in the school day, student safety, respect and order, and a focus on academics. Please review and become familiar with these policies. POLICY ON CELL PHONES Teachers have the authority to require that all electronic devices be put away during class unless cell phones or other communication devices are being used as a tool for a lesson. Non- educational games are not permitted. Failure to comply with classroom protocol will subject the student to the loss of the device for the class period and/or remainder of the school day. Students who refuse to put their phones away as requested by a teacher will be subject to the same consequences for noncompliance as in any other instance of insubordination or noncompliance. Use of the devices in the hallways is the responsibility of the student. Any student using a communication device in the hallway who is causing a disturbance, is late for class, etc. will be subject to additional school discipline. Illegal, destructive, harmful or any other inappropriate activities, including but not limited to computer hacking, cyberbullying, accessing offensive/obscene materials, and engaging in illegal activity, are strictly prohibited as set forth in District policies. District policies can be viewed at Cell phones used by students must be set to silent or vibrate as to not distract from classroom instruction. Personally owned devices include but are not limited to cell phones, ipods or mp3 players with headphones, handheld game systems, and Netbooks or laptops. Note: Students will not be allowed to take phone calls or answers text messages during class. If an unavoidable emergency requires a student to take a phone call from a parent or relative during class, the student will need to get approval from the teacher or principal to avoid consequences. VISITOR AND STUDENT CHECK- IN PROCEDURES

4 Visitors: All parents and visitors will check in at the reception areas in either JHS or FTC. All parents and visitors will be required to present a valid driver s license or state ID at the time of check in. No visitor will be permitted in either building without proper ID. Students: Before the school day begins, students will enter the building at either the JHS or FTC front doors and will be permitted to access the building. After the school day begins, students will be permitted to access the school by either the FTC receptionist (south end of the building) or the JHS attendance secretary (second floor, north end of the building) after checking in with proper identification. OUTSIDE FOOD AND DRINK DELIVERIES Students will not be permitted to accept food anywhere at school without administrative permission. This includes the reception area, the attendance office, or principal offices. However, deliveries for food will be accepted for special occasions if the event is a special activity for a club/organization or a class activity that is prearranged by the teacher / coach / sponsor. In these cases the teacher / coach / sponsor will meet the delivery person in the proper location. Students will not be permitted to accept deliveries for lunch/meals at school individually or in small groups. This policy will be enforced. Students with medical dietary needs: Parents may bring lunch to students who have special medical dietary needs. In these situations, the parent will be given a visitor s pass to meet his or her student in the nurse s office. Students with special dietary needs will need to have a letter on file with the school nurse. STUDENT DRESS CODE It is important that all students adhere to the school dress code. Many prohibited clothing items such as yoga pants, short shorts, hats, sagging pants, tank tops, as well as other items are listed in the policy guidelines and do not have a place in our school. Students who do not follow the dress code guidelines listed below will be subject to changing clothes or school discipline. Dress Code Policy The Board of Education recognizes the value of allowing individual student expression as well as the necessity of protecting student health and safety and maintaining an atmosphere conducive to education. Student dress code procedures must be designed with the goal of balancing these competing interests. All dress code procedures will adhere to health and safety codes and comply with applicable law. Dress that materially disrupts the educational environment will be prohibited. No procedure will impose dress and grooming rules based on gender in violation of Title IX. District procedures will specifically define ambiguous terms, and examples will be provided when practicable. The Joplin School District believes that a strong relationship exists between what a student wears and the attitude and behavior he/she displays. We ask all parents and students to understand that different modes of dress are appropriate for different activities, and that not all modes are suitable for school or school activities. Students should always be well groomed and dressed appropriately for the activity in which the students are engaged. Dress and appearance must not present health or safety hazards, be indecent, disruptive, distracting, or inappropriate for the classroom. School officials will determine final decisions as to the appropriateness of dress and personal appearance.

5 Below are guidelines for students and parents to help them avoid attire or grooming which interfere with the learning environment. Examples include but are not limited to the following: Headgear, jacket hoods, hats, caps and bandannas may not be worn in the building. Caps may be worn in the building but must be removed during school hours. Sunglasses and dark glasses, unless required by a doctor, are not appropriate. Contact lenses or eye wear that are distracting are prohibited. Hairstyles that are distracting in color or style are prohibited. Unnatural hair- coloring (fuchsia, green, blue, etc.) and painted faces are a distraction and are not appropriate for school settings. Footwear will be worn at all times. House shoes are not acceptable. Jewelry that is considered excessive or poses a threat to the safety of the student or others (chains, sharp objects, etc.) is not permitted. Tattoos that are considered inappropriate (depicting violence, drugs, gangs, sex, etc.) must be covered while in school. The following examples of clothing are considered unacceptable and are not permitted: Mesh or other see- through clothing that reveals body parts or undergarments not allowed under other provisions of this policy; clothes that expose a bare midriff or backside, expose cleavage or undergarments; halter- tops, tube tops, tank tops, or other sleeveless tops or shirts with excessively large openings; clothes which are cut or torn above the knees. Students may wear sleeveless garments that adequately cover undergarments. The width of shoulder straps for sleeveless shirts must be the length of the student ID card. Shorts or skirts that are excessively short: mid- thigh is the accepted rule on appropriate skirt/short length and is defined as no more than 4 inches above the knee. Excessively tight or loose clothing: clothing should fit appropriately and professionally. Jeans that sag below the wasteline, or excessively tight garments, such as yoga pants, are considered inappropriate for a school setting. Clothing should fit at the waist, and yoga pants or leggings (if worn) should have proper attire over them to meet dress code expectations. Other inappropriate attire includes gloves, and/or clothing with vulgar, profane, ethnically derogatory messages, and messages, pictures, symbols, depictions or advertisements of gangs, violent acts, illegal substances, drugs, or alcoholic beverages. Oversized coats, gym bags and duffel bags should be kept in lockers or other designated areas during the school day for safety reasons. Because of safety issues, individual classes may have dress requirements that are more restrictive than those listed above. Building administrators will determine if attire or related student dress code situations are likely to be disruptive or create a potential health or safety problem. Exceptions may be made in the case of appropriate team uniforms, special school events and other specific principal designated activities. Teachers are expected to enforce this policy to protect student health and safety and maintain an atmosphere conducive to education. Students who violate the dress code are

6 expected to make the appropriate changes immediately. Students may receive school discipline including but not limited to in- school suspension, after- school detention, or OSS depending on repetition and severity of incidents. SCHOOL COMMUNICATION At Joplin High School, we strive to provide clear, consistent, and timely communication to parents. We recognize that students, especially middle and high school students, may not always share information and news with their parents. We always encourage you to have daily conversations with your child regarding their school experiences. We also encourage you to reach out to the school and our teachers with questions or concerns.
