Language Arts: 1) Carefully and neatly complete both sides of the "L l" worksheet. 2) Bring pictures of things that start with /l/ for our class poster. (i.e. lemon, leaf) Math: Complete the attached math pages to prepare for our Unit 5 math assessment on Wednesday. Extra Practice: 1) Each day, practice reading the "Real Word Chain" list to a parent and choose five words from that list to segment. 2) Complete the Sight Word poem and practice reading it with a parent! (Parent help needed for words.) Detach and keep all poems and "Real Word Chains" pages at home in a practice folder. Friday: Turn in your homework and January Reading Log. Valentines: Follow attached instructions for Valentine box/bag and class Valentines. Monday, 2/9: Bring your special Valentine box or bag and Valentines to share. Valentines will be mailed Tuesday and Wednesday.

8 Most homework packets for the remainder of the school year will include a final page that has a Real Word Chain on one side and a Sight Word Poem on the other side. This page should be detached from the homework packet and kept in a folder or binder at your home. Eventually you will have a wonderful collection of word chains and sight word poetry to continue reading over the summer. This will ensure your child is ready for first grade! Following are guidelines to help your child use these pages to develop reading skills: Real Word Chains We use these lists in our daily learning activities at school. In a word chain, only one sound changes in each word. Our goal is to encourage the children to read the list fluently by noticing the one change in each word and avoid the practice of sounding out each letter. Choose five (5) or fewer words on a list to practice some of the following activities: 1) Practice oral segmenting skills. In this activity, the child does not see the words. A parent reads a word and the child segments the sounds. i.e. parent says fan, then child says sounds /f/ /a/ /n/ 2) For children who have difficulty segmenting, let them move blocks (or small objects) to represent each sound in a word. Then, change a block to show where the sound change occurs in the next word. 3) Write a list of five words while saying the letter sounds as they are written. Then, read the five word list with fluency. Sight Word Poems These poems are first grade level and intended to be read with parent help. Your child reads the decodable words and sight words: like, to, go, the, a, my, etc. You read the harder words: car, someplace, home, any words your child cannot sound out or has not yet learned. This should be a fun, supportive, shared activity that your child enjoys completing with you. With regular practice, your child will learn more of the words and eventually may be able to read some of the poems on their own.

9 Valentine s Day Homework Each child is being asked to decorate a shoebox or medium-sized bag to hold the cards and goodies they exchange in class for Valentine s Day. Please help your child gather materials to make this a fun project. Some decorating suggestions are tissue paper, wrapping paper, paint, stickers, glitter, markers, sequins, etc. Encourage your child to be creative and have fun! Make sure their name is clearly labeled on the box or bag. Please send it to school on or before: Monday, Feb. 9 th. Exchanging Valentines: Each child should bring a valentine for each student in our class. Please do not write classmates names on the Valentines; children only need to write their own name. You may tape a small treat to the Valentine, but this is not required or expected. Valentines may be store bought or handmade. Kindergartners may wish to bring an extra Valentine for their 6 th grade Big Buddy. The children love to participate in giving and receiving the Valentines! Please send the Valentines to school by Monday, Feb. 9 th!
