2 Accessibility ilit ELL is a fully digital program that's accessible on multiple platforms. For example, users can access the program on their tablets, or through a web browser on their personal computers. ilit ELL uses cloud-based sharing to enable back-and-forth functionality between teachers and students. 3 Designed for English Language Learners ilit ELL contains extensive supports and scaffolding for ELLs. It is ideal for pull-out classes, intervention classes with a high population of ELLs, or as a core or supplemental curriculum in classes. ilit ELL includes instruction and practice that focus on language acquisition as well as opportunities for speaking and language-production activities. The program also includes Unit 1 Newcomer modules, which are designed to support newly arrived students with extremely limited English ability. Modules help acclimate these students to the school environment and scaffold the transition to English language proficiency. For example, lessons focus on essential skills such as how to exchange introductions in English or on basic vocabulary such as names for common classroom objects. 5 Why ilit ELL is Effective ilit ELL delivers a research-proven instructional model through a mobile instructional system, which makes it engaging, accessible, and adaptive for teachers and students. ilit ELL produces accelerated growth for ELLs. The program is aligned to state standards and English Language Development standards. Each day, students read, write, speak, and listen; they work to develop the skills necessary to achieve English proficiency as well as college and career readiness. 6 Instructional Framework ilit ELL uses a gradual release approach to instruction, which includes established daily lesson routines that move students toward the independent application of skills. This Gradual Release of Responsibility model is organized into a workshop model for delivery of instruction. Opportunities for self-selected reading, an extensive, high-interest library, instant instructional support, and embedded coaching help ensure that every minute is productive- even when students work independently. ilit ELL also incorporates a Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol-or SIOP - which is a research-based instructional model that has proven effective in addressing the academic needs of ELLs. 7 Assessment ilit ELL uses assessment to build and focus instruction, and it helps teachers ensure that they deliver the right instruction to the right student. To reach this goal, ilit ELL integrates a full suite of diagnostic, formative, and summative assessments with a high-interest curriculum. For example, ilit ELL uses the Group Reading Assessment and Diagnostic Evaluation-or GRADE - as both a diagnostic assessment for placement and an independent measurement of reading growth. 8 Lesson Format The ilit ELL instructional model is broken into two teaching blocks that work together to increase students' achievement. These daily 45-minute teaching blocks provide opportunities for highinterest reading practice as well as systematic skill development. During Block 1, students explore the Time to Read, Vocabulary, Whole Group, and Work Time lesson segments. The following day, during Block 2, students use the Vocabulary, Read Aloud, Think Aloud, Classroom Conversation, and Work Time lesson segments. 9 Time to Read Striving readers often tend to be reluctant readers. ilit ELL addresses this issue by incorporating time for students to do self-selected reading. Students choose from a high-interest leveled library. Lexile levels of texts in the library range from Beginning Reader to As students read, they have access to a picture dictionary, as well as the option to translate the text into different languages. ilit ELL includes hundreds of ageappropriate visual readers. ilit ELL also includes over 100 titles in Spanish, as well as content readers on science and social studies topics. In order to promote oral language proficiency, the Time to Read lesson segment includes literature circle suggestions, as well as collaborative conversation activities where students discuss a common text. The Time to Read lesson segment also provides ELLs with additional opportunities to practice writing and responding to texts through journal writing prompts. The journal prompts are scaffolded and include sentence frames. Frames are leveled and include both a simplified and a more complex version. These scaffolds help build ELLs' academic vocabulary and writing skills. Teachers can access the library to make recommendations to students and gather students with the same interests and needs for a book club. 10 Read Aloud, Think Aloud During the Read Aloud, Think Aloud segment of the lesson, teachers lead their students through an on-grade-level complex text. Teachers model fluent reading and present instruction that focuses on language development and reading comprehension. This modeling prepares students for when they'll practice applying the skills that teachers have modeled in an instructional-level text. Copyright 2017 by Pearson Education, Inc. 11 Vocabulary ilit ELL includes extensive vocabulary instruction. This instruction follows a research-based routine, and the words come from the whole-class anchor text. In addition to vocabulary words essential to comprehension of the text, every lesson includes either oral language production, conversational fluency, academic vocabulary, work with related words or connectors, transition words, or prepositions. There is also a weekly Oops feature that focuses on common errors that less proficient English speakers commit. Students also complete a Knowledge Check, which allows teachers to assess each student's understanding of the new words. 12 Classroom Conversation The daily Classroom Conversation segment provides structure for students to process and discuss the on-grade-level text that they read during the Read Aloud, Think Aloud lesson segment. Conversation starters give students a scaffold and access to academic conversations with their peers. ilit ELL includes two levels of conversation starters-level A, which contains simpler language, and level B, which is more complex. This provides teachers with an opportunity for differentiation, and it allows students to feel successful in discussing a complex text. ilit ELL also includes Routine Cards, which teachers can use to help engage students in academic conversation. In ilit ELL, students speak multiple times every day, and there is at least one structured wholegroup, small-group, or paired conversation. Copyright 2017 by Pearson Education, Inc. 13 Whole Group During the Whole Group lesson segment, students receive explicit instruction in reading, writing, grammar, or vocabulary skills, as well as language development. The skills and concepts that students study during the Whole Group lesson are the same skills modeled during the Read Aloud, Think Aloud lesson segment. 14 Work Time The Work Time lesson segment is based completely on students' needs. Students might meet in small groups for intensive instruction by the teacher, or they might work independently on skills and concepts that require more practice. While working independently, students work in their Interactive Readers. There are nine levels of Interactive Readers available that range from Lexile levels of 100 to The Interactive Reader includes checkpoints where students answer questions about what they're reading. Automatic, adaptive feedback is provided if students are off track. At the end of each Interactive Reader, students write a summary connected to the text that they just read. Student responses are scored by the program, and students move up or down in levels based on their performance. For students reading many grades below level, Work Time includes phonics and phonological awareness lessons. The program determines if specific students need these lessons based on Pearson's GRADE and past performance. ilit ELL also provides students with oral reading fluency opportunities. Activities are automatically scored, so students can see their personal growth. Language production and speaking and listening activities as well as personalized grammar and spelling instruction and practice occur during this time. 15 Embedded Teaching Tools ilit ELL provides embedded tools to support teachers in successful program implementation. Each lesson includes scripting and scaffolded teacher support. The program includes a Universal Access PD button, which provides teachers with suggestions and scaffolds for reaching a variety of learners, including students with learning disabilities, as well as those who are visually or hearing impaired. The ELP button provides teachers with immediate differentiation based on students' English Language Proficiency levels. ilit ELL also provides a PD button that features SIOP in Practice notes that identify components and features of The SIOP Model to assist teachers in integrating proven SIOP practices right into the program. 16 Customize Instruction With ilit ELL, you have opportunities to customize your instruction. Let s look at a few examples. The Connect button provides access to the Poll and Buzz features. Teachers can select Poll to create customized surveys. These surveys can be used in a number of ways, including as activators at the start of a lesson or as a brief closing activity at the end of a lesson. The Buzz feature allows teachers to send personalized comments to specific students. It also keeps track of how many stars each student earns over the course of a week. Under Supplemental Lessons, you have access to additional resources that you can use to enhance or modify ilit ELL lessons. Let s hear a little bit about each one. Routine Cards, which are also accessible through the student app, can help guide class discussions and conferences. Phonological Awareness lessons can be used during Work Time to support students who would benefit from additional single-word, single-sound practice. You can use the Book Club lessons to bring more structure to Time to Read. Under Read Aloud, teachers will find shorter texts and corresponding lessons that can be used during Read Aloud, Think Aloud when time is limited. 17 ClassView Through ClassView, ilit ELL teachers can easily manage class rosters and access student performance data. Data comes in a variety of formats, making it easy for you to pinpoint specific skills, assignments, or assessments for a particular student or group of students. For example, you can use the Student Summary Reports feature to access a snapshot of a specific student s performance and progress. Or, you can use the Skill Based Reporting feature to gauge students performance on a target skill, such as reading comprehension, within a given date range.
